Forgot to mention in the video, but I'll also be checking out the extra songs as well.
Of all the fantastic songs on this album, this is the one that grabbed me by the throat and tried to drown me in the bath tub, and holy shit I wanted it to. Though there's always so much that gets lost in translation, this feels like the absolute epitome of what makes Kyo such a phenomenal performer and songwriter both -- it feels like this weird gremlin man has kicked his way into my house, grabbed a kitchen chair, and is having a meaningful heart to heart with my depression. I'm generally so apathetic about it, but this!! This fucking song makes me cry like a baby! It's one of those things where like -- sometimes when you're depressed, you want someone there to pick you up (there's another Japanese band called Psycho le Cemu that functions as emergency serotonin for me, check out literally any of their videos if you get sad because I guarantee you will walk away feeling a million times better) and sometimes when you're just drowning in all that miserable bleak nothing, you just want someone to sit next to you while you push through it -- no platitudes, no promises that everything's going to get better, just ... that. THAT is what this song is to me, just a guy who's put his scars on display for the last couple decades sitting there saying 'yeah, me too bud' in this crushingly beautiful way. Trying to decode the lyrics line by line isn't really a thing with me and diru; it's more about evoking a feeling, a moment, an interaction -- and this one hit me harder than anything has since maybe Tousei. What an absolute monster of a finisher.
Thank you for your reaction!! Sorry for kinda getting personal in the response, but it is an honest answer, lol. Other standouts were Schadenfreude, Oboro, Otogi as my second favorite to Kamuy. I think at this point Phalaris sits at a comfortable top 4 position in the diru album rankings along with vulgar/arche/wtd - the top spot tends to change daily depending on mood/which one I listened to last, lol.
Your standouts are the same as mine. Great songs. And no worries about the personal stuff, I enjoy reading about how people relate to their songs in different ways. There's a few of their songs that if I listen to, it instantly takes me back to 15 years ago and such. They've got such a strong ability to convey emotions through their music.
This is such a good comment. Took me until recently to really vibe with this album, but after seeing the live clip of Oboro, I was like “hold up… maybe they kinda ate with this one”

Great video. I took it as how he views his daily life, reflecting on it with a merciless, empty chair across from him at his table. Reciting the same old poems (pronounced the same as song) and melting into the wound on stage for blank eyes and heartless cheers.
Toriko is an old name for Dir en grey fans.
DEG have always had a really unique acoustic sound, I saw it explained by the person who mixed Dum Spiro Spero, its something to do with MIC placement but i cant remember

A small detail: the "light" is light as in weight, not as in illumination.
