You care soo well for them! My neighbours got a kangal but they never really cared for her. She was alone outside all day. 3 years ago I started walking with her because I felt bad for the dog. Now I go on long walks with her 3 times a day and its almost like my own dog. I absolutely love her, she is a perfect dog. She is friendly to everyone, always does that happy squeaky noise when she sees a stranger. She is very social and likes to meet people. I am a huge kangal fan now!

I do the same with my neighbour's alabai. She is alone on a chain in the back all day and night. For some reason she took a liking to me and my husband and we walk her daily and spend time with her. She loves to sit on my deck and be petted. She doesn't like strangers so much but she has become calmer and more confident.

@@linz80 That is genuinely great to hear! Way too many dogs have sad and lonely lives as "guard dogs". Some people dont understand that dogs are very social creatures. They need both human and dog friends.

@@WolfmanDude I felt sorry for her too so I would give her sausage and eventually she warmed up to me enough to pet her, etc. Now she goes crazy when we go to get her for her walk. We even took her to starbucks Drive thru for a pup cup LOL

You ever notice that anyone with the idea that Kangals should never be kept as a companion dog in the house are also at the same time people who've never had a Kangal in their house as a companion?
How could they actually know how that will work out for the homeowner and the Kangal if they've never seen it or experienced it?
I have a Kangal as a companion dog and she is a house dog. Never had any sort of trouble with her. Super happy well socialized dog that doesn't rip my house apart when I'm gone.
In fact as far as house manners, she's been better than German Shepherds I've had. She knows what is hers and what is not and knows not to touch anything that isn't hers.
The only time she ever showed destructive behavior in the house was when I got really sick for a week and wasn't able to give her the 7 mile a day walk she is accustomed to. She chewed my shoes during that stretch out of frustration I guess and lack of exercise.
She is a good girl, very polite and I take her everywhere I go, not to mention she is an off leash dog in a suburban environment. I walk around home depot and lowes off leash with her and never had a problem.
Sure she is a Kangal and stubborn as hell but she also knows where the red lines are and what behavior is completely unacceptable. Like leaving my side in public and scaring people, or being rough with other dogs.
I'm a huge fan of your channel Mike and I hope you just ignore all those armchair quarterbacks telling you what they think your dogs need.

My Kangals are part of our family. Calm, super loving and affectionate. I think people wld be surprised at how calm/self assured kangals are. We live on 5 acre ranch but they prefer being with us inside by far! Total cuddlers!

Most LGDs have great temperaments. I volunteer at the local pound and love the LGDs the most. Usually such gentle giants. We mostly get Pyrenees and Anatolians

Great video Mike! After watching many videos about the Kangal, I refer back to your site. It is obvious to see that you do understand the breed. They look like happy family companions. Kudos to you!
I hope to have at least one in the next few years.

You are exactly right KWM. They will respond well to any environment as long as they are "being loved and feeling safe". It is not the breed, it is the owner is also true statement. I am the alpha in the family and I raised our Kangal as a friend. He knows what you want him to do but only obeys to "sit, down, stay, and go" commands and it is fine as long as we are all happy.

I have two Kangals and people always think I'm crazy when I say this but they are honestly more like having a child than a dog. Whenever people express interest in them after meeting mine, I just try to really get across how different they are than a regular dog. I've have had lots of dogs of all different breeds and they are not like any other canine I've ever been around. But anyone who thinks they can't be good house dogs have clearly never experienced the joy of being in a kangal cuddle puddle.

try giving them "yal", a Turkish recipe Kangal food. its healthy for them. believe me they will love it. you will see the difference with their furs.

    • @williamdavis9562

Yal was given to Kangal's in Turkiye because for a long term they lived in harsh environments with limited resources. A dog's digestive system is simply not made to process that amount of heavy starches and carbs. No dog in the wild ever harvested grains and processed it for flour.
Sure you should give your dog "yal" if you live up in the mountains and don't have access to much else. Healthy? Absolutely not.

I saw a video of an Anatolian shepherd family with kangals: the sheep are herded into gates at the house in the evening.
Before the man came into the house to get his food on the table, the woman went out to meet the dogs and gave them food and water!
I have a livestock guard mix and I understand this behaviour very well. They are precious and have a close relationship with the woman who provides the food
Such a dog is ALWAYS a member of the family and when a dog has done its job, it comes home and gets what it deserves.
All the people who say that a dog like this is not a family member and must always stays with the herd have not understood this dog. Collaboration with humans would not be possible without family and mutual love and care.
Maybe they sleep by the herd, but they also wants to be close to their people.

I respect their opinion, but I feel no need to share it. I got one pretty much by accident. She is different, but my other 2 guardian dogs were also different in different ways. You do have to treat them as a companion. I love her independence and I know she has my back. She doesn't kill my chickens.
