A Great Champion Hero or Anti Hero needs a great adversary. Ali would not have been half the champion he was without Smokin Joe Frazier. Together, they made History. In the end, Joe Frazier died first. They were life long friends. Muhammad Ali was near death himself. But he insisted on attending Joe Frazier's funeral. Even if it killed him, He was going to be there for his friend and legendary adversary. Together they brought true Glory back into Boxing.

To this day, I think that Ali/Frazier I was the greatest fight I ever saw. Ali made a mistake in getting into the ring with Frazier too fast after his layoff and with only a couple of fights under his belt. I think that he underestimated Joe, both as a fighter and also his determination. How Ali got through that 11th round is really amazing.

He was knocked down in his 11th fight against Sonny Banks in 1962 and in his 19th fight against Henry Cooper. Actually, if you watch the last round, Frazier gave him such a one-sided beating that I think they could have stopped it. But you have to love Ali. Great talent.
Amazing Joe was more or less blind in his right eye. The toughest man ever to step into a boxing ring. Ironic that it was Ali's brain that fell apart later on in life while Frazier, who took a lot more punishment, was lucid to the end.

That to this day IMO is still the greatest single athletic performance by an athlete. Joe was hit by countless combinations, especially early. He'd rather die than step back one inch. Looking back now, you look at those three fights, 2:1 to Ali. But when you look at the fight in Manilla, you know who would've wont that. After Frazier took the loss, moments later, Ali collapsed. Ali was a great boxer and promoter, but Smokin Joe Frazier was my favorite 🥊I asked my grandmother the next day who won the fight when she told me that Joe did. I was so happy to hear it ! Frazier with that vicious left hook ! RIP to two of the greats in the boxing world 🥊 !!

That to this day IMO is still the greatest single athletic performance by an athlete. Joe was hit by countless combinations, especially early. He'd rather die than step back one inch. Both guys showed tremendous heart. Joe was just not going to lose period. What a mess his face was to get that win, and no doubt he won. Unlike Ali, Joe was never the same after this fight. He left a piece of his soul in there to get the win. I think I've watched the full fight 25 times, because I just can't believe the will these two men showed.

Joe was alot like Marciano in that, the harder you hit those guys, the more focused and dangerous they became. Thats not a skill that can be learned. Thats in you, before you are born.

Looking back now, you look at those three fights, 2:1 to Ali. But when you look at the fight in Manilla, you know who would've wont that. After Frazier took the loss, moments later, Ali collapsed. Just a matter of timing gave Ali that win. A few more minutes, it would've been the other way round. Joe Frazier, in my mind was the greatest. Ducking, working, never stopping. Like a tsunami. Blind in one eye, nobody knowing that. Imagine with A1 eyesight what it would've been like. Great man, great boxer. Sad end. RIP Smoking Joe, the greatest.
