We were at Yellowstone Park about a month ago and we were walking past beehive geyser and a group of people were waiting there. I asked some woman standing there why are all the people gathered here? She said that some guy among the group standing and waiting said the beehive geyser will erupt in about 15 minutes. OMG it was almost 15 minutes to the T and beehive geyser erupted! I don't know how the guy knew but he did know. And you are right it is very impressive shoots much higher than Old Faithful and very smooth.
By the way two more things. Your coverage of Yellowstone in the aftermath of the flood damage guided our itinerary and we are very very very thankful for that. Second, this video is absolutely spectacular!
So yeah, there is a nearby geyser, a smaller one that I'm told is the Beehive Indicator. It often erupts an average of 15-20 minutes prior to the Beehive, whose eruptions range between 10 and 24 hours apart. Glad you were able to see it up close! I haven't seen it up close yet, just from afar...

Thank you! I grew up spending my summers as a kid at Old Faithful. My mother worked at the Old Faithful Inn and my father was a mechanic on the park busses. It was a great trip down memory!

nice tour i remember the morning glory pool when we were kids you could drive right up near it seems like it was bluer in color, back then we would count over one hundred bear sightings and even had one in our car, ahh the good ole days
Yeah, so there is an old road that runs up there... Seems like it must have ran from the Artemisia pullout on the Grand Loop Road up to Old Faithful, as that old bridge over the Firehole was certainly built for autos. Today, it's the bike path that runs from the Old Faithful Inn to the Morning Glory Pool.

Thanks for the virtual tour of the basin. What a great way to spend half a day or so, wandering along the trail from one geyser to the next. When it comes to Old Faithful I head up to Observation Point. I really like the (less crowded) view from up there with the Lodge in the background. Love the reflection of the clouds in some of the pools, and the green color in Morning Glory Pool -- just beautiful! Until next time, happy trails!
Your Observation Point suggestion is spot on. I love it up there, cause the view is spectac, and there are very few people willing to cruise up there. & yeah, the clouds always make photography better! So much fun to play with clouds...
A bit late, but whenever I happen to be at the upper geyser basin. I personally enjoy watching old faithful at the more abnormal areas, such as the benches near beehive and all of that.

This was really nice seeing all this again. Been there several times. When I was out there I would look at peoples feet to see what foot attire they had on. Blisters for sure OUCH. Wear comfy shoes for sure. Stay Safe 👍👍😊

I worked at Old Faithful Lodge back in 91, and I was lucky enough to see Beehive go off twice that summer. It is a sight to behold. My other favorite geyser is Riverside geyser. Great video.
Only twice? Bee erupts almost every day. But Yellowstone Truly is on of the most wonderful places on earth. :)

Thank you for your videos and tips. I've done a lot of backpacking in Wyoming in my younger days, but have never been to Yellowstone. Wife and I are coming out next week for two weeks and showing her the sights around Wyoming and down to Estes Park. Spending 4 days staying in West Yellowstone and checking out the park - been taking tips/notes from your videos - thanks again man and safe travels!

Loved the tour. We only saw Old Faithful when we were out in May. Started to rain so we had to leave. Thanks for showing me what I missed.
Oh yeah, you were here in the colder months huh? I didn't get here till June 2, & I still found myself in a blizzard! May had to be great!
It was actually really nice. But we did have snow a little rain the day we toured Yellowstone. The day before they closed down the park for a while because of heavy snow.
We got to see the parade of Bison but no bear. May is a great time to go as it was really empty.

So happy I came across your channel. I am continually amazed at the clarity of video you get from your phone. Great narration as well. living in Bozeman, I get to the park quite often, but you always give me more than I have known to exist, and points to hit on my next visit. One of my vey favorite spots, especially this time of year when water flows are down, is the bottom of the Virginia Cascades. Worth the effort to get there for sure!

Enjoyed your video. Yellowstone is one of my favorite places. We were there in the fall of 2021. Loved every minute of it. We are planning to return in October 2022.

Great video. We are staying at the Snow Lodge in a few weeks. I have now added a few more geysers to my already long list. I am glad we have a few days there to explore. It looks so awesome.
Awesome! This is the major geyser basin in Yellowstone. The Black Sand and the Biscuit Basins are really close by. If you're into hiking, the Biscuit Basin Overlook is a fairly short trail, like 5 miles in total with the Mystic Falls Loop. It provides an opportunity to look out on 3 active geyser basins. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the tour. Years ago I saw Fan and Mortor guysers going off at sunset, that was great. Worth looking at if you can, any guyser going off with the susnset in the back ground is worth it.

Yeah, something like over 150 geysers in the Upper Basin.
Technically, hot springs, mud pots, fumeroles and geysers are all hot springs. It just depends on the amount of water available to the underground chambers, and how those chambers are configured. (As a matter of fact, it's really interesting on how geysers actually work. It's a juggle of the weight of the water column above versus the pressure of the superheated water beneath...)
A lot of steam. In September when I usually go on a road trip the steam is almost unbearable, since the fog gets worse when the air is cold...
For some reason, the Lion Group is always erupting when I'm there. All three times I've been to Old Faithful/Upper Geyser Basin. Maybe I'm the one who sets it off, lol. And I also have video of Beehive going off (I think it's Beehive) behind Old Faithful, while waiting for Old Faithful... 😁

Indeed, and even on top of that a lot of the geysers are interconnected, and one going off can make it so that other cannot erupt. So every time you come back there will likely be different things erupting. For example Daisy geyser is currently active, but because of that being so active splendid geyser next to it cannot go off.

Thanks, it's not too crowded these days. Most of the parking lots are probably 75% full, but the boardwalks are enjoyable this year.

3:11 This two facts are incorrect, Castle is old but it is around the same age of Old Faithful. Both of these Geysers are around 10,000 years old. Just wanted to share that.
Thanks Park Junkie. I never gave any thought about the Geysers so this was another education about the park for me. I don't know if this is in your wheelhouse, but I was wondering if any of that geothermal energy was being harvested at this point into the national grid? Happy trails Park Junkie
Happy to have you on the journey Simon! So yeah... not my wheelhouse exactly, but since its been a national park since the 1870s, there has been no real attempt to harness any of the geothermal energy in Yellowstone. I would venture to say, that any attempt to do such a thing would certainly damage the unique natural features that we observe today. Probably a good thing that we humans just let this one be. We still don't really know what's going on down there... & these things can just shut off suddenly, then pop up somewhere else... so in many cases, such efforts may well have been a complete waste of time and resources.
Rudyard Kipling, in his writings about his tour in a young Yellowstone Park, wrote of guests who would comment on the shame of allowing such a powerful source of power go to waste...

How far is the upper geysers from Old Faithful? Visiting late September. I have bad knees so I am hoping to view the upper geyser basin too. Enjoy your videos. Your delivery of information is amazing. Great job!!!
Old Faithful is part of this basin. Most of the basin is across the Firehole River from Old Faithful, but a smooth boardwalk provides easy access to most of the cool features. Enjoy!
You do know they allow motorized wheelchairs/scooters in the park, right? Those boardwalks are handicap accessible, I believe.
Just learn how to drive one before you actually have to use one...

It may come as a surprise, but I use a couple of iPhones... I have a 12 pro max that is my workhorse, and a 12 pro that I use for backup or when my battery is charging on my pro max.
I used to have ooddles of Canon bodies and lenses and gear... but hated packing it all around and banging it all against rocks and stuff.
So, once they developed these phones to have solid resolution and zoom ability, I sold all of that pro gear, and just cruise light with the phone and a tripod now... Thanks for watching J What!
You go to the Visitors center, and they will have times posted. So write them down and take a walk.
I think the small geyser that was going off just down from Artemisia is called Atomizer geyser.
Okay, cool! Thanks for the info... it wasn't on my geyser map, and I was surprised when it went off. Although, it did entice me to stay a bit too long, as I was thinking it may be an indicator of the Artemisia Geyser...
@@theparkjunkie lol...the only reason I knew it was because I was looking on Google Earth to see where Artemisia was because I didn't remember seeing it when we were there, and Atomizer was labeled.
When we went in 11 and 17 we turned around at Morning Glory to go back to the Old Faithful area, that's why we had not seen Artemisia either time.
@@harlandeke Ah, Artemisia is a five minute walk past Morning Glory on the unpaved trail. It requires a brief uphill walk. But it can also be easily accessed from the Artemisia pullout, just across from the Biscuit Basin on the Grand Loop Road. Thanks for the info!

One of the highlights during my 2016 Yellowstone visit was a ranger tour of the upper geyser basin. One question, does massive rain like in June impact the geysers? I read it impacts the paint pots, by changing the mud consistency but what about the geysers? PS: Upper and middle basins took me a whole day 10+ hours and was the most steps and miles of the visit! Second question like asked below, have they ever tried harnessing the thermal energy in the park or even the hydraulic energy of eruptions?
Yeah, rain and snow certainly add water to the geyser reservoirs, as well as underground springs in some cases. There is a lot of water in Yellowstone, at least this year. As far as harnessing the park's energy, I'm not sure of how that would be achieved without negatively affecting the park's fragile features. With Yellowstone being declared a park 150 years ago, there were no efforts made to attempt such an endeavor. I would imagine that such attempts would not produce any real level of worth, and would not be possible without serious damage to the park's unique structure.
If you search "USGS Yellowstone" on UA-cam, the YVO (Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, lol) publishes a monthly video about the state of the volcano and other features in the park.
There weren't any significant changes after the flood...
What temperature is the firehole river? Seems like it would be pretty warm
Well, there are places, like that boiling pool by the river, where the temperature is pretty hot, but overall, the river is still cool. The water does seem a bit warmer than other rivers in the area, but I wouldn't call it "warm"... perhaps just "warmer than cool"... if that makes any sense... 🤷♂️
My kids were wondering if the mist from the geysers is hot? I assume so, but it didn't seem to bother you.
The mist from the geysers certainly warms up the area, but by the time the droplets hit you, they aren't scalding or anything.
If you have ever experienced a steam vaporizer, it's very much like that. Except for the sulfur smell.
No, the steam is warm, but the droplets are perhaps lukewarm...

Unfortunate that you missed Grand Geyser. Yeah, it's predictable in something like 40 min blocks (like, if it doesn't go off at 6, you have to wait until 6:40 hopefully, but it could end up being 7:20), but way worth it. Probably my favoriate geyser in the park.
Cool parts of Grand Geyser - look at the trees in the background, coated in sinter. It's from an eruption in something like the 1950s I think that coated the trees and killed them. I assumed it was just from continuous eruptions, but then again, that wouldn't make sense because the trees wouldn't grow in the first place. The Park Ranger confirmed that it was a particularly nasty eruption that took out the trees.
Really cool stuff. You could actually do a full video on the properties of the Grand Geyser. It's 3 pools combined, you can watch the water levels go up and down, etc.
It is unfortunate, but that's how it goes some days. I believe the estimated interval between eruptions is more like four hours. If it were 40 minutes, I would have just had a seat & waited patiently. I understand it's the tallest predictable geyser in the world, so I'll probably try to hit it again in the next few days. Thanks for pointing out its glory.
@@theparkjunkie The usual time between eruptions is something like 6 hrs, I think, but that's not always the case. It can be longer than 6 hours, but my point is that if it doesn't erupt in 6 hours, it won't be 6:10 or 6:25, it will be 6:40. And if it doesn't do 6:40, it won't be 6:50, it will be 7:30. Then when it does erupt, you wait another 6 hrs.
So for the one you missed, yeah, you'd have to wait 6 hours. But at the beginning, you said it was supposed to erupt but didn't - that's when you wait it out. Sure enough, it erupted after you left and before you got back.
If it is supposed to erupt and doesn't, it doesn't reset the clock to 6 hours.

Riverside geyser is a favorite of mine, with such a unique location. Norris geyser basin is probably my favorite area, with so much continuous activity, and generally small crowds. Great video as always.
Norris is great! I just did the Back Basin a few days back, absolutely fantastic. I would have loved to have seen Steamboat, but it last erupted June 20, so I didn't wait around too long... 🤷♂️
