My small country must be proud of Anneke. I've spoken to her after a concert. Soo modest and lovely lady! Try also her songs together with Devin Townsend. And another Dutch bands to discover are Blackbriar and Delain.
I love her :) not only she knows how to sing, she is also a very nice person, always smiling on the stage. She shines. Camera is good. It's better this way.
When you are done reacting you should listen to the entire Mandylion album studio version. Its a classic for a reason and pretty mich started an entire genre. Also check out Anneke playing her acoustic sets. She is just amazing. Her Like a Stone cover is otherworldly.
@@nicolaswutzmusic ahh cool. Btw a good thing to react to next would be Ayreon, if you have never heard of that. He does these crazy prog rock/metal operas with huge casts of famous singers like Anneke and dozens more.
Ty for this one Nicolas. You completed the TG25 "trilogy" or triptych rather. The channel this video is from also has the full concert registration (with great audio) from Chile 2004 for you to enjoy in your spare time. Cheers from Amsterdam! 🤘
5:40 “Guitar solo?” The Gathering: “A WHAT!?”😳 They started as a death-doom band (at the same time as Paradise Lost, Anathema and My Dying Bride). Guitar solos seem to be neglected in this genre.😂 For doom metal with epic vocals and shredding guitar solos, check out Candlemass or (better) Solitude Aeturnus. Back to our Lady Anna Maria. I highly recommend you to check out “Anneke van Giersbergen's VuuR - On Most Surfaces”. Not as a reaction, just for your personal amusement. She looks indescribably badass there. It’s the same song “covered” by Annie with her other band in 2017. They only released one album, very much Devin Townsend inspired “wall of sound” kinda thing. Which comes as no surprise because Annie was also featured on some of Devin’s albums. The Gathering have many good songs, but this one is my favourite. I also think it’s the best band she’s been in. Their music is not very complex - as you must have noticed, the riffs and melodies are often quite simple. It’s the way they combine them that makes it sound great. You could call it progressive I guess, but it’s nothing like the Dream Theater kinda prog (thank god for that!). It’s rare to see someone on UA-cam get hooked on this band, and therefore - much appreciated.🤘
I concur, VUUR is fire! Too bad it was so short-lived. Hope it's smouldering still & waiting to reignite at some point. And since we're talking personal amusement, how about the last one in that phenomenal TG25 set: "The Gathering - I Can See Four Miles (TG25: Live at Doornroosje - unofficial video)". Starts out dreamy and pretty unassuming, but for the very nice bass work by Marjolein Kooijman to then turn into a vibe around 4:15. Then things turn up a notch a minute later with Annie joining in (she could've done the toms on Ayreon's "Comatose") to then go "full trippy tribal" around the six minute mark. Proper tribal, cuz no sighting of these horrible Mike Portnoy plastic hamster tubes (octobans) or the rocket tom cr@p that Kaitsu needlessly added with NW's tribal tunes. As far as I'm concerned, that could've gone on for a good deal longer. Maybe I'll try my luck at an extended version. Cheers!
@@BrendonChase_2015 She took some lessons from Rob I guess. :) Tool, The Gathering and Ayreon are much better at tribalism than Nightfish. Portnoy is haled way beyond his actual skill by all the nerds. Overall, Dream Theater could be of great interest for someone studying extreme cases of incurable onanism addiction... Give it a try! You have to record and upload it of course.😊 👉🤓
They're just teasing everyone with the licks here and there and when you're at a point of thinking there's a solo coming, they're just like: ,,Nah"😂 Thanks for even the off camera recommendation! I will definitely check it out!
@@nicolaswutzmusicSuper cool. I'm from Poland btw. Somehow I never saw them live and they had concerts in my country. 😢 But I will be looking for some gig.
Hi, *Nicolas* - I'm so happy *The Gathering* "caught your ears" (and I'm a bit proud that I probably kicked it off with my suggestion for "Travel"😊). Perhaps you'd like to get to know the current lead singer of The Gathering *Silje Wergeland* - she replaced Anneke in 2009 after her leaving the band. Their duet *Leaves* from the amazing show *TG25: Live at Doornroosje* is just perfect! Have another great time with music by The Gathering and don't forget to share with us 😄. And if you want to hear Silje solo, I recommend *Heroes for Ghosts* - it's an epic track again (TG25: Live at Doornroosje, of course).
@@nicolaswutzmusic Thank you, I'm honored 😄 And I have to say that as a big fan of The Gathering - I'm very happy with this "fatal twist". But if you want to listen to something else (occasionally), try *Jinjer* (female fronted band, great musicians from Ukraine) - preferably their song *Pisces* (if you don't already know it). It fascinates a lot of people, I'm sure it'll bring you new followers😉
Lukas, to your first response, I know Ginger and especially this song. The reactions are always hilarious (people getting caught off guard is always funny:DD) To the second one, thanks for the recommendation. I'm really intrigued to record a reaction to this song right now :DD Might as well do it :Dd
There's no reason not to do it - go for it! :D And instead of Jinjer, I recommend you another song - Sancta Terra by Epica is just awesome, especially in the live version with guest Floor Jansen (Nightwish).
Great first reaction again, and thanks a ton for giving this band and singer this much attention. :) You may like to watch an earlier version of this track just to witness the development of all members: ua-cam.com/video/W6uF5tR_0Ts/v-deo.html Note that this track is from their fourth album, which was their second album with Anneke, and their second 'gothic' metal album. The first two albums were more doomy and featured other singers, a.o. a heavily grunting male and a clear singing female vocalist, both also showed up during those fabulous TG25 concerts in 2014. I bet you'll be interested to listen to their first, their heaviest, album 'Always'. As a next on the first reaction list for TG with Anneke, I would like to recommend you this track: ua-cam.com/video/vuCowE6gozA/v-deo.html This is a slow pace, crunching rock track from the third album with Anneke. Again, the band and Anneke, as both lyricist and singer, just doing great things you may not expect. After this one, I really won't recommend any more TG tracks and can merely advise you to listen to their studio and live albums. I could ... Sand and Mercury, Great Ocean Road, These Good People, Jelena, A Noise Severe, Black Light District, ... oops ... hehe. But now we're on it, I'd warmly recommend you to explore more of the artists Anneke has worked with, especially metal musical and vocal genious Devin Townsend and prog metal / rock genius Arjen Anthony Lucassen. For some first impressions with/without Anneke: Devin Townsend Project: * 'Pixillate' live from By a Thread in London 2011 * 'Deadhead live at the Royal Albert Hall 2015 Ayreon (Arjen's prog project with numerous collaborating metal/rock artists): * 'Isis & Osiris' live in Tilburg 2019 * 'The Day that the World broke down' official video form The Source 2017 Enjoy your next musical rabbit hole adventures!
@@nicolaswutzmusic I'll definitely stick around. I'm excited to see your first reactions to 'Hevy Devy' and Ayreon ... if you really haven't witnessed the heavy musical awesomess of those legends before.
You talking about Anneke’s voice and the operatic part of it makes me take you to recommend her singing on a Dutch TV-show called De Tiende van Tijl where she performs When I am laid in earth. Each time listening to it and looking it gets me.
nice to see you enjoying Anneke so much! There is only one of this woman, she always laughs, can play the guitar nicely and she just sounds so good, I have seen many reactors and they are often immediately in love with her, we are lucky to have such a great singer here in the Netherlands, if you like it If you like to hear her play a solo with the guitar, this is a nice one, she is singing her first song here in Paris so she talks to the audience a bit, but see if you like doing this one, Beautiful One - Anneke Van Giersbergen - La Scène Bastille 13/12/2012 ua-cam.com/video/WhrXyzqzwFc/v-deo.html this is a more metal song from her new band called fire ->(vuur), which is more like the gating VUUR - Days Go By: London - Tuska Open Air Metal Festival 2017 ua-cam.com/video/Fq0uL7pr_DY/v-deo.html
I love this song but I'd never think that you'd point out at unpredictability here as a think you appreciated about i6. I mean it's already "predictable" if one also listens also to for instance The Callous Daoboys of all bands. Bjt then again I have listened to On Most Surfaces hundreds of times.
It's tricky. I feel like there are parts of the song, that a common listener would not expect to go where they went, but it's also so well written, that after a few listens it's stuck in your brain to the extent, that you feel like it couldn't have gone any other way :DD Does this make sense? :Ddd

Yeah, this was probably as close to a guitar solo as you'll get from them. Her later band VUUR goes into guitar shredding solos a lot.
