Anneke Van Giersbergen is very highly regarded as one of the best female vocalists in metal, specially because at the time she joined The Gathering as their lead singer this wasn't very common at all and specially not in her style of singing.
The Gathering is a band that started atmospheric doom and death metal with vocalist Marike Groot and Bart Smit as lead vocals (growls). At first, seeing things in historic perspective. Back in 1991/1992 the gothic metal we know now in 2007 (After forever, Nightwish, Epica etc) wasn’t around yet and The Gathering were truly a groundbreaking and trendsetting group. If they hadn’t played their part together with for instance Orphanage, the Dutch scene would probably have developed very differently. Still firmly based upon the 1991 Paradise Lost album ‘Gothic’ but incorporating keyboards in a more important way and writing some lengthy songs. There were death grunts and additional female vocals which these days have become quite mainstream but were refreshing back then. The Gathering were pioneers, just don't expect the style to be perfected yet on a pioneering debut album. In 1992 ‘Always’ received 100 points in many magazines. Having said that, the album in a way has lost a lot of impact over the years. This has two main reasons. First a scene in this subgenre emerged and later incidentally surpassed this album but secondly the band themselves made some changes later in their career and broke through the mainstream audience with their third album ‘Mandylion’ and vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen. Still, ‘Always’ is a beautiful and very important album if you are into the genre. With some lengthy songs, a lot of diversity and - in contrast to contemporary Gothic bands - the emphasis really on DOOM. Bart Smits has a monotone voice but suits the material well and Marike Groot (formerly Little Mary Big, Wonderlust) did a great job with the female vocals. Credit: Morbert On the second album, The Gathering adds progressive metal ballad, an acoustic ballad followed by progressive doom metal. Martine Van Loon was female vocalist and male vocalist Niels Duffhues in dark wave and aggressive goth rock style, not very characteristic of the genre. In the Mandylion album begins the fusion of elements aimed at a larger audience. Two strong points are the entry of Anneke and the direction to TRIP ROCK with reminiscence of PROGRESSIVE METAL.
This is a fantastic performance. Anneke is a unique vocal talent, in a league of her own. As noted, for her unique tone and ability to punch through the wall of sound, but also for her range, control, power and dynamics. She can and has sung pretty much everything.
I have listened to the album how to measure a planet, about 20 times. I wouldn't place the music on typical 90thies, it is timeless and the best I have ever heard, can't get enough of it. Anneke has one of the best voices ever existing in metal and it is a shame that She is not so known, as Floor, or even as Whitney Houston. She deserves that place.😍😍 🤩
Beyond happy that The Gathering have their premier outing on your channel, Doug They are a very special band, a band that commands a deeply loyal fan base (as the concert attests) How To Measure A Planet is an album that is timeless, limitless, well worth a full listen! 👍🤘❤️
The Gathering started as a doom metal band, but gradually evolved into an atmospheric/heavy rock band, which is the style where they found the most commercial success. Back in the 90s, Anneke was almost every metalhead's dream girlfriend 😁 I've always appreciated her style more than the typical operatic/classical female metal singers that followed the trail she blazed...
Interesting fact: there is this very obscure short piece called "Friendless Confidante" (with her husband Rob Sneijder) where she utilizes that classical voice, and just judged by that bit alone, her classical voice is on par with her own style, trust me :)
She 'is' the snow. She personified the snow, and sings from it's perspective. By the way - Anneke is one of the greats. One of the original front-women in metal, and still going strong!
Anneke is definitely on my Mt. Rushmore of metal/metal-adjacent vocalists, with her practically one-of-a-kind combination of brightness, expression, and power... And she's been in some great bands/projects besides The Gathering - Devin Townsend Project, Ayreon, Gentle Storm/VUUR - not to mention a ton of collaborations and guest appearances. Awesome, awesome voice!!!
Wow! Didn't expect to see The Gathering on here! One of my all-time Top 25 bands. They had a remarkable evolution from their early death metal period, to their doom metal period when Anna Van Giersbergen joined (which this track is from), to their alternative/prog rock period, to their late shoegaze/dream-pop period. The amazing thing is that the albums they produced in every period are superb, and it's rare that a band that changes genres that radically excel that much in each genre. Anneke has the voice of an angel and is definitely one of the absolute best female vocalists in metal. She's also had a great solo career, and her collaborations with Devin Townsend and Danny Cavanagh (of Anathema) are superb too.
Great reaction! I always enjoy how you pick up on the musical technicalities and comment on them. Anneke van Giersbergen is a rabbit hole in itself! The Gathering, Ayreon, Agua de Annique and other solo work, The Gentle Storm, VuuR and collabs with Devin Townsend, Danny Cavanagh and the beautiful duet Sharon den Adel. Some titels for the long list to check out: Travel, Strange machines, Valley of the Queens, The Storm, Shores of India, Awake, Grace, Somewhere... tbc...
This is not the first time you have reacted to a song where Anneke sings: do you remember your reaction to "Kingdom (The Devin Townsend Project)"? anneke sings some beautiful backing vocals there!
Anneke's pioneering work with The Gathering influenced many on the Netherland's metal scene, especially female singers including Floor (to join After Forever) and Simone Simons (Epica).
Awesome to see a The Gathering reaction. My favourite Dutch band ever. To see there progression from Doom metal to more trip rock you just go through the whole concert. Start with King for a Day, which is from one of their albums before Anneke joined.
Anneke is one of my favorite all time singers- you’ll really enjoy the song Travel and its subject matter. Stylistically I consider the Gathering to be a type of Prog- the go from the metal sound of their earliest release and evolve to something atmospheric. It’s hard not to fall in love with Anneke especially if you see some of her solo stuff and how she handles a crowd.
Anneke is one of Arjen Lucassen's friends. She appeared in the last show Arjen did in September 2023. She also shines in the live registration of the 2019 show 'Into the Electric Castle and other stories' where she sings the role of the (doomed) Egyptian contestant. This show had about 20 songs played live and the registration was of outstanding quality. Arjen himself, though he is no longer keen to be on stage all the time, still loves to play and sing the 'Hippie' contestant.
The gathering, one of my ten favourites bands still today with the last singer Silje. Anekke was the voice and the songwriter for many years, many beautiful albums and lives, so fantastic voice,no one can forget this voice!!! I love all her works, solos and her bands also, too many corporations with other artists, her last one with Amorphis, amongst stars was magnificent. My loving songs from the gathering are, nighttime birds, saturnine, travel, Eleanor, maruned, leaves and strange machines. I believe that the gathering is the most underrated band, the previous week release their new album beautiful distortion,an amazing album.
An other awesome song they made in that show it's Travel. It's an ode to Mozart. It's a true sound experience. Listening Travel it's always a special moment
Glad you liked it. Anneke is my all time favorite female singer! She has a unique voice, very sweet, capable of very powerful singing, but I think she's at her best in more mellow tunes. Doug, you got to react to Travel from the Gathering's next album How to Measure a Planet!
I really really enjoy The Gathering, though I only know their 1995-2003 period. It fits in a musical space with bands like Anathema and Katatonia for me (also worth checking out for sure). There are times I just need to hear Anneke sing. So expressive and angelic yet grounded. She has guested on several other favorite projects of mine: Giant Squid's 2009 album The Ichthyologist on the track Sevengill, Amorphis' 2018 album Queen of Time on the track Amongst Stars, and on the Silver Lake by Esa Holopainen (Amorphis' guitarist) album from this year. Glad you reviewed this one and hoping for more.
I don't know who suggested the Gathering for metal mondays, but I'm glad you listened to them. I'm from Mexico and I was at those shows in 2014 in Nijmegen. It was absolutly amazing. Maybe I'd suggest another song, like Travel for the same shos(definatly not for mondays). I'm pretty sure you would like it, and you would be able to listen to the other singers doing chorus at the end.
I’m a big fan of the Gathering (with Anneke van Giersbergen). So many great albums. Try the song Travel, studio version, a song about Mozart. Anneke inspired Floor Jansen and several other Dutch female singers to sing in a metal band. The Gathering was a hardcore metal band until Anneke came. Now it’s progressive metal. Anneke sings on many albums by Ayreon and in the two live concerts: Ayreon Universe live The electric castle live and other tales. She has her own band VUUR. Also see The Gentle Storm.
Although I’m not keen on music labels, The Gathering wasn’t ever a hardcore band. Post-rock is the most common label applied to them, at least the closer to their sound, that for sure is quite distinctive. Anneke is something apart, she is a singing bird !!!
@@palantir135 , no death metal (and hardcore) came later, and is much more about thrash with growling. I describe early Anneke's The Gathering as light doom.
1000 miles music to me. Their new singer is also amazing, (Reminder: need to buy that stuff!) Anneke has been singing also with Arjen Lucassen and Devin Townsend. Has been inspiration to both Floor Jansen and Simone Simons. I came across her, when finding Arjen. Think I have more albums of The Gathering than Black Sabbath. Which means a lot!
So happy to see TG in your channel, but a bit sad that you didn't react to one of their best song imo. Travel, Eléanor, Analog Park, Saturnine, Alone... might have a bit more to analyze. (Specially travel)
That live recording is awesome from beginning to end, highly recommended to listen through it. I'd also suggest Heroes for Ghosts from the same recording.
Awesome ... Thanks Doug! So glad you enjoyed this and your bit of research and the suggestion to use this performance is much appreciated. Those chord progressions are typical for many of their albums. You'll also find them in Always, Mandylion and others. Anneke is Devin Townsend's metal tinkerbell for good reason, and has been a shining example to many female lead singers. I warmly recommend you experience their track 'Travel' performed in that same concert. It honours a composer, and all composer if you interpret it broadly. And it showcases the more trip rocky / Floydy part of their oeuvre, and as a bonus you'll get Anneke in overdrive. An absolute must listen. Yes, this is no heavy metal. Even though they started as such and laid foundations with other bands for goth/symph metal, they would develop in different ways. Much similar to how Anneke was never the standard metal queen, the band wouldn't comply with any genre nor commercial standards. If you wish to experience Devin Townsend and Anneke at their live best: Pixillate by DTP, performed in the By a Thread concert. Enjoy!
Hi Doug! You actually have seen Anneke in action before- she was guesting with Devin Townsend in the version of Kingdom that you reacted to (the blonde woman in white). She and Devin are good friends and work together a lot. I would love to see you react to the studio version of Travel by the Gathering. It's a quieter song, and a beautiful one, that Anneke wrote about Mozart. Please give it a listen!
Think you’d have been a bit more impressed with ‘Travel’, a longer, proggier song. “You must have loved the colours of those violins” is a fantastic line referencing, I believe, that Mozart ‘saw’ sound in the form of different colours.
The gathering is great! Gotta do more of em now hehe. Recommended songs are confusion from the same album and also some great ones from the album before! Especially recommend ”eleanor”, ”in motion” and sand and mercury as their greatest imo! There are also great live performances filmed if you wanna see them in their beginning! :)
Next time do Travel a grunch rock love letter to Mozart, with a lot of Pink Floyd Vibes. For me a real meditation song. You can listen the album version, the version from the same concert as this, but listen also to the orchestral version with the Dutch Residentie Orkest this will bring this song more in your wheelhouse.
I have loved this song since I found the band innet surfing while in the Netherlands 3 years ago. It took me afew listens (typical of their songs) to realise it is about a "Cold" relationship. It was then that it became clear that The Gathering were a very literary band. I now consider them the MOST significant musical group since The Beatles. PS. As the brothers Rutten who founded the band (the guittar and percussion) said, "This is not metel. We don't do metel."0
Anneke, Simone, Floor, Sharon, Charlotte, etc... I swear, the Netherlands has something special for female singers fronting metal bands, maybe it's the water. 😆
Check out the song "Numbered" by Devin Townsend which features Anneke on vocals. This will give you a taste of what music she was doing after leaving The Gathering
Yes Anneke van Giersbergen is amazing. She was also amazing with the Ayreon concerts with Floor Jansen (watch The Valley of the Queen live Song by Ayreon).
Holy cow Dough! Thanks for reacting to The Gathering! The group is amazing and Anneke’s voice is from another planet. Please react to more the gathering songs 🙌🏼 I humbly suggest you to react to Travel or Waking hour. Thanks again 🙌🏼
Check from the same show the song "Travel" it's a great song, more on the prog side. Anneke she's the first real metal Godess she's inspire a lot singer like Floor from nightwish. And she's a regular collaborator whit Devin Townsend since 2009. And you already react to her on the video Kingdom from Devin.n
This probably was recommended to you because it has some monster Anneke vocals. But for the musical side of things I would recommend Sand and Mercury, Travel, Leaves, Broken glass. They are an amazing band, but not very complex.
Hi greetings from Argentina, thanks for this, my daughter is named Anneke because of her, I usually watch your videos , the gathering has changed a lot , I loved each record from the band but I think you will enjoy songs like Travel or maybe Waking hours, you will see why Anneke is the best metal singer and also those song sound really different to this one
HUGE FAN OF YOURS DOUG !!!! Sorry for the shouting text 😆 Very much addicted to watching your content and analysis and always look forward to what’s next 😃 👍
Hi I think you should do Anneke on Beste Zangers. Anneke also does acoustic songs. Like A stone by Chris Cornell ,and off her new album Huuricane, Agape,
Hopefully somebody will suggest some Vuur or The Gentle Storm or Devin Townsend (featuring Anneke). This is peak Anneke Van Giersbergen. She is the trailblazer for Dutch female metal singers and is rumored to have taught Floor and Simone (from Epica) early in their careers.
If you’re looking for earth shattering, I think you should react to Travel (live @ Doornroosje) by this same band, same concert, same venue. It’s probably the best they ever did. I thought the lyrics are about Mozart. In another famous song from this metal band (Strange Machines, live @ Pinkpop 1996) Beethoven and Gershwin are mentioned. I’m a bit confused about the Vocalyst (who has reacted to Travel before) and the Virgin Rock Iwho’ve you had an interview with). They look similar. For what’s it worth… half of this band was attending the same secundary school as I did.
If you like this song, I recommend listening to the song "Strange Machines" from their album "Mandylion", or perhaps "Sand and Mercury" from the same album.
If you want to dip your toes back into the DIsturbed pool, you should look up their song, "A Reason To Fight". SUPER deep, heartfelt, message. Be sure to check out the Live version too, such a potent message.
I would love for you to hear Michael lee firkins " the Sargasso sea" I think you truly would love it! And a bonus what you think may be a slide on guitar is him masterfully using the tremolo bar. Love the channel Doug!
Hi Doug. If you’re on the lookout for Halloween-appropriate music suggestions, Renaissance has a good one for you. Check out “A Trip to the Fair” from the “Scheherazade” album. Spooky stuff!
Nice to see The Gathering here, although not exactly what I would call metal monday material. Their first couple of albums were doom/gothic metal but then switched to a more atmospheric rock. This is a nice tune but if you ever come back to them you should do Travel, that would be more interesting to dissect.
Yah it was ok, Nice to see a few guitar player's... As Alice Cooper always said, A good Rock Band should have at least 2 or 3 Lead Guitarist's Which gives a great layer affect each having their own solo/riff Nice reaction Doug, Cheer's Kevin
We all love Anneke...she is amazing
She will live eternal as the metal goddess singing the May Song and Leaves…

It was then that it became clear that The Gathering were a very literary band. I now consider them the MOST significant musical group since The Beatles. PS. As the brothers Rutten who founded the band (the guittar and percussion) said, "This is not metel. We don't do metel."0
Anneke, Simone, Floor, Sharon, Charlotte, etc... I swear, the Netherlands has something special for female singers fronting metal bands, maybe it's the water. 😆
thank you
For a Metal Monday please do Testament Trail of Tears or Return to Serenity.
The Gathering - Waking Hour(TG25: Live at Doornrooosje)
You shall try "Travel" from the Album "How to measure a planet". Very nice songwriting. An goosebumps at the pay-off in the end ...
I am a simple man; I see my Red Queen Anneke 🥰, I click '👍'.
You might want to look into the song Rescue Me from the album How to measure a planet.
Anneke is awesome!
I remember in the seventies watching Rockpalast on German television, Wishbone Ash with two guitars soloing together - a revelation.
beautiful!
Wish you also do Travel from the same concert. It's my all time favorite 😊
Anneke is wonderful
great reaction
Pleased do her Duett I-Ah with Devin Townsend. The Retinal Circus Version.Just beautiful
Love anneke thanks for the video
Annekeeee!!!!
If you like this song, I recommend listening to the song "Strange Machines" from their album "Mandylion", or perhaps "Sand and Mercury" from the same album.
Strange Machines is a classic.
If you want to dip your toes back into the DIsturbed pool, you should look up their song, "A Reason To Fight". SUPER deep, heartfelt, message. Be sure to check out the Live version too, such a potent message.
Anneke forms part (along with Steve Vai and a Gospel choir) of the greatest 'enter stage left' by any artist, for Devin Townsend's Retinal Circus.
I would love for you to hear
Michael lee firkins " the Sargasso sea" I think you truly would love it!
And a bonus what you think may be a slide on guitar is him masterfully using the tremolo bar.
Love the channel Doug!
Michael is criminally overlooked in general.
@@gwts1171 I agree 100% and that song is just amazing it just builds and builds it’s so dynamic
Therion and then The Gathering now. He's on a streak.
need to listen to some of her work with Ayreon, in particular Valley of the Queens.
Anneke is a fantastic singer, but I think Ayreon (and associates) a way bit cheesy for my taste.
@@nsgobbi each to their own, Arjen still makes for great story telling
@@ScottTo1967 Yes, from this perspective, ok.
Please react to Wintersun and their song Time. Pure perfection. Multiple layers, melodies, counter-melodies, folky, proggy, it has everything!
Man.. where is Eternal Rains Will Come... I am waiting since last 2 months :(
Hi Doug. If you’re on the lookout for Halloween-appropriate music suggestions, Renaissance has a good one for you. Check out “A Trip to the Fair” from the “Scheherazade” album. Spooky stuff!
Ooo, interesting choice! I love that song!
Nice to see The Gathering here, although not exactly what I would call metal monday material. Their first couple of albums were doom/gothic metal but then switched to a more atmospheric rock. This is a nice tune but if you ever come back to them you should do Travel, that would be more interesting to dissect.
Good performance, but the live version from Bizarre Festival in 2000 is even better. 'Marooned' from the same show too.
I would recommend Uneven Structure - Awaken/Frost/Hail for Metal Monday. Cool band from France, enormously underestimated imo.
She's got a great vibrato
The Gathering - Travel , please. thx
I said it b4 and here it is again:
Sharon den Adel + Layne Staley = Anneke
Equilibrium - Mana will be the next one, Doug? ;)
Doug convinced Jim Morrison that he was a crawling king snake that ruled his den.
Nice! Check out Soraia from Philadelphia. Start with the song Still I Rise. Not a prog song, but heavy with great melody.
Yah it was ok, Nice to see a few guitar player's...
As Alice Cooper always said,
A good Rock Band should have at least 2 or 3 Lead Guitarist's
Which gives a great layer affect each having their own solo/riff
Nice reaction Doug, Cheer's
