Damn wtf happened to the metal community, all I see is syn is better or andy is better. Who cares! Since when is about the skill they are both bad ass dudes! Enjoy the damn music.
Unfortunately in a genre of music like Metal where technical proficiency is pretty much a must. Everything becomes a dick size comparing contest. Who can shred the fastest, who plays the cleanest, who has the best solos etc
Well it may be true that Andy possesses more technically advanced techniques and skills, but Syn seems to have that indescribable natural knack for writing. Which is not something you can just acquire. To write something so unique that is instantly recognizable as your own fingerprint, that is something special. And he does that very well. So to say either one is better than the other is just ignorant.
I think the difference probably is that Andy James music is mostly intrumental, which means he has to do more in a song to keep your attention, while Syn is playing rhythm most of the time with a lead stuck in the middle ( for a relatively shorter time). If he did an intrumental album, he might be able to show off more like Andy can in his songs.I for one am SICK of vocalists getting all the credit..that's why I like the intrumental metal. I'D rather hear NO vocals and more shred instead.(of course I'm a guitarist) UA-cam is the best thing that ever happened for someone like me. Now I can listen to what I want instead of what the record companies WANT me to hear! Andy is one of my favorite guitarists but I think Syn is very good too, I just prefer intrumental. My favorite vocalist in metal is Russell Allen from symphony x.Im not a huge fan of "brutal vocals". I think it scares a lot of people away from metal, and I want MORE people to embrace it, but that seems to be the red line with alot of people accepting metal music...LONG LIVE THE SHREDDERS!!!
Syn uses larger sweeps, he has more legato, uses his pinky and really plays fluidly. I don't think this catches his style that much. I'd think he can't play this if i haven't saw his Master Class. But he can play much faster than he does in Avenged Sevenfold.
吳文誠 Lol. I'll respond in your language: i am not so idiot... u are so idiot!! u not understanding my comment. i are not attacking syn, i is defending syn from people so idiot they thinking syn couldnt play this!! (That was actually hard)
Andy james in my opinion is one of the best shredder in the world. Please licklibrary could you make a dvd with Chuck Schuldiner style? It would be great
I wouldn't put it past Syn to dabble in the Solo track business, although i doubt it will ever happen. Other than his live solo's he enjoys being with the band too much to break off. Most bands get together for business purposes, but all these guys have been friends through high school.
I LOVE this!!! To answer your question: the seize solo is the reason I started listening to A7X. I’ve been trying since 2007 to see it live but never got to because they didn’t play it on Indy. It will go down as my favorite simply bc it means a lot to me. My favorite to listen to is nobody live. I love everything about it, the build up to it, the mini version of it earlier in the song, I love the speed, the sound, and absolutely love watching his expressions as he plays it live then, the best part, is the look of satisfaction on his face every time he finishes it.
Carl10Yamit Placing a headband at the first fret sure helps in reducing unneccessary fret-noise, which gives a little cleaner feel to it. But it doesn't matter if you can't play. Fortunately, Andy is a really technically advanced guitar player and probably only used it to reduce fret-noise on the recording. There wouldn't even be a noticable difference. + Gates uses a headband for most if not all his solo's in the studio, as he's admitted multiple times.
Pontus Lindberg Yes, i know that synyster uses a headband in studio, he calls it " Walter " or something. I had never said that Andy is bad, or over-rated . He is good. But i personally think that synyster is better he can do this as clear as mr andy does. I admire synyster, since i discovered a7x i started investigating, and hearing their first album to their last that actually is hail to the king, and i could see the progress and the evolution of his solos, the deepness of them, the soulness of it. Thats my opinion, and my intention with the first comment wasnt to offend Andy, he is an amazing player and many people would like to play ¼ of what he does.
Of course he can do it as clearly. They're both fenomenal, which is why I find it difficult comparing them. I agree with all the things you mentioned, Gates and Andy James are both among my 5 fav guitar players of the modern age :)
The solo is in D minor, so I think its resoanble to assume the rythm track would be aswell, also I belive A7X plays in Drop D majority of the time but Im not sure if this is the case with this solo. Hope that helps P.S And if anyone knows Im wrong please tell me in a poliet non abussive manner.
I see a lot of Syn haters here... All I'm going to say is that before you smack the guy down because you don't like his band, watch his master class and some stuff he does on his own. He's a whole different animal outside of A7X. Personally, I love his style and I think he's one of the better modern rock guitarists today. I think people just shoot him down because he's in a popular band. (Ya know, because as soon as a band makes it, they're garbage.) Smh.
@@mathieuniel3309 you mean when one of the biggest influences on their writing died (the rev) and then brooks came along with his amazingly good style and drumming too so theyre really good again in the stage
That must be so awesome. To play any type of solo in any style so effortlessly. This solo would take me weeks just to even play, and it wouldn't be anywhere near as clean as this.
I like the way Andy doesn't use his pinky and can still be fast as hell. One less finger than me...However 100 times the speed and the musicality I have. This guy is a complete beast :) Thks for the uploading.
syn can definitely play this... so dont say he cant. Im pretty sure when syn is bored he plays ridiculous things. Plus when Syn writes his solos a lot of them are to enhance a song. Playing a solo at a tempo 200 times faster than the song its supposed to be in wouldn't sound very good. Syn is also building his own custom style through a hybrid of Metal, Jazz, and classical sounds. He's by no means the best or fastest guitarist in the world. But you gotta admit, he is one of the biggest names out there to date.
The real reason Andy is so good is not just his raw talent and ability to play well is his outstanding capacity to memorize songs his brain is fresh and young he's able to live in a way where he can dedicate countless hours of memorizing Not only songs licks riffs etc etc but The techniques required to play at lightning speed you have to remember every picking step weather is up or down angling your pick in the right direction rolling your pick slightly If your married it's hard to find quality practice time if you start having kids Good luck getting that practice And being able to devote that time All the regular things in life such as marriage work and children will overwhelm your mind your brains gigabytes start to get crowed you have to remember to feed babies or change diapers and a million other things Basically Andy has to sacrifice a lot to be that good
This comment is so underrated. I couldn’t imagine how much better I would be at playing if I could devote more time to practicing in order to inhibit more instinctive playing techniques. I have been practicing a lot of Jazz phrasing lately. If I don’t stick to it, I have to relearn things I have already learned. It hurts the inspiration to continue learning new things. Luckily I have my own bluesy style that I can always fall back on if I’m wanting to get some playing in for fun. Really glad you pointed out the requirements it takes to be this great at guitar. It allows me to be ok with not being as great as other players based on my circumstances. It’s tough when you know you are capable and are determined enough to accomplish something like this.
Hi Manslavery, no worries, this is the performance for the dvd Synyster Gates Quick Licks - we've only ever uploaded the trailer to this dvd. All the best - Licklibrary
I think it's more inspiring than anything, like damn, I want to play like that so I'm gonna work my ass off and practice everyday so one day I can be even half as good and fluent as that.

Really well done! I love how you can actually tell the particular songs and associated themes that were drawn from syn's playing to create this solo, while at the same time being fairly original. Excellent stylistic imitation.
he isnt copying anything. he actually figured out how to play and make it sound like something synyster gates would play, but completely original. THAT takes some serious fucking talent and study.

you will notice that a lot of influence came from beast and the harlot.... You can play a lot of the solo over shads vocals..... It sounds fucking sick.
This kind of solo almost found in many a7x songs from city of evil, self titled even in nightmare. But syn is more than this, his progressive metal solos in their latest album are so great.
Branden Anderson he only did one in bat country. he did a few times in beast for atmosphere in the intro, but yeah he doesnt do dives much so they dont really define his whole playing style
His like my guitar mentor without even knowing it lol. I've been playing for 16+ years now and my pinky always held me back because it tends to cause discomfort and pain in technical licks, my original jazz blues teacher always hounded for correct form so i only reached a certain level, or more so play what doesn't hurt. This guy inspired me to take that next step to adapt in reaching a whole new level 14 something years later just based on his style per say. thus i conclude Andy is legend.
Andy, you missed one of the most vital techniques to Synyster Gates style, he uses the Floyd Rose. We can see that your Ltd deluxe has a floyd but it looks like it's blocked off? It would've been great if you incorporated divebombs in the dvd. Other than that, you smoke Synyster Gates.
okay haha you obviously dont get why they are doing those videos. Andy James has his own unique style and technically speaking he is superior to Synyster in every major aspect of guitar playing
Nick Jonathan lol yeah i was thinking that, it was super prevalent in his playing during the city of evil album not as much anymore, not sure when this was made but it really sounds like a solo syn would've written on city of evil.
NOBODY BUT SYNYSTER GATES KNOWS HOW GOOD SYNYSTER GATES IS!!!! we dont see him playing other than live and on records. he cant just go speed shredding on songs that doesnt help the band at all so we are not going to ever see his full guitar potential unless he starts doing solo instrumental stuff.
@@TomHolloway123 well bending is one of most "soulful" and unique characteristics of a guitar just considering when you bend you typically have to be playing slower in order to play it (you dont see 16th note bends mid shred too often) so it can definitely be attributed to "playing with soul"
This is such a smartly written piece of instructional material. If you learn this you could easily play any syn solo. Im not hating on syn i think he is great but this is his tool kit 100% and put masterfully into a cool song for learning.
This as the tone really like Syn, but it really lacks his smooth chromatic and fluid style. By the way out of Avenged Sevenfold he's bizarre, but his work with the band is rather minimalistic. Syn's clearly not the best guitarist around but claiming him awful or bad is simply idiotic. He's really fast, just watch his master class and you'd see that he's actually much much more than he's with his band.
Guitar playing isn't a sport, therefore no one is better than the next. Music is an expression of emotion and what you like. Andy is technically amazing on guitar, it's his job. Same goes with Syn, they make a living doing what they love.
Actually Andy's technique isn't all you think it is. For one, any competent guitar teacher would tell him he should be using his pinky finger a hell of a lot more than he is. A habit formed from laziness. Not saying he's a bad player because obviously he's great. But to say his technique is better than synyster gates (a guy who was taught how to play guitar by his father who is an incredibly talented jazz guitarist) is just factually incorrect.
I love Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold but disagree with you. Since when does Kirk Hammett do any sweeping? Since when do Avenged Sevenfold play any iconic, legendary riffs like Enter Sandman or Master of Puppets, for example? (Not saying that A7X don't have any good riffs because they do but they're not as famous as some Metallica ones). There are similarities like This Means War is clearly copied from Sad But True but if you actually do some research rather than just saying what you think, you may discover that for they're latest album, A7X said that they want to go back to write riff-oriented songs like the bands that inspired and influenced them as musicians like Metallica, Pantera etc. And besides, who doesn't look up to bands as successful at Metallica?
This really doesnt sound like Gates at all. Its literally just a bunch of fast playing, no real style. Sure he hits some melodic points but there is no real flow or real "sound". Gates mainly mixes jazz legatto and metal together.
I like how he makes a video imitating a guitarist's style, and ends up playing even better than the guitarist he's trying to imitate. Don't get me wrong, I love Syn. He's one of my favorite guitarists. But let's be honest, he's got nothing on Andy James.
BaLisTic GuNZ Syn did a few interesting things at that masterclass. But his tone was awful and his picking hand has always been super sloppy. AJ is by far the more technically advanced. The 8 finger tapping Syn did is actually quite simple, as far as 8 finger tapping goes. Plus, the majority of that masterclass was mindless noodling to me. No real melody
Matt Bennett uh i know, but listen to him on his acoustic guitar... playing clean and on acoustic requires much more skill... (master class part 5 i believe)
***** i still say syn is superior as a guitarist... he knows his technique and can play multiple styles as viewed in his master class... jazz and classical. much more difficult then metal

Syns style is so weird, but quite unique. Just something about it is awesome.
He's certainly one of a kind

The "weirdness" in the style actually comes mostly from Dimebag riffage.

I don't know about "Smoking" Synyster but you make a valid point
PhoenixM1H3 Andy shits on synyster. I feel bad that he even did this video, because anything A7X related is pretty gay.
reigningbullets Sure man, whatever you say.
reigningbullets If he has to copy someone else's style, *obviously* the person he's copying is better. :)
okay haha you obviously dont get why they are doing those videos. Andy James has his own unique style and technically speaking he is superior to Synyster in every major aspect of guitar playing
Sooo completely bad ass!!!! That lick that starts at 1:45 is incredible!
so much chromatics
Nick Jonathan lol yeah i was thinking that, it was super prevalent in his playing during the city of evil album not as much anymore, not sure when this was made but it really sounds like a solo syn would've written on city of evil.
minor scale, less chromatic
Awesome! Can't wait till I can Shred like this!
Cole Dehmer exactly but from avengeds stuff hes god
Completely nailed the style, way too many BADASS licks to choose from, I'd say I'm surprised but It is Andy James after all
should've included more bends. Syn plays with much more soul
bends don't equal soul
Tom Holloway Uhh..
This is right on the money, Syn bends a hell of a lot, even a fair few in the quicker solos he does.
Im not hating on syn i think he is great but this is his tool kit 100% and put masterfully into a cool song for learning.
i thing it was great for the time it was released, but i feel like it's outdated at this point. Syn's style has definently evolved.
After the recent guitar center video all the stupid people who had been hurling shit at syn in this video might have their tongue in cheek now.....
I feel like Andy James just beat me up. That was relentless.
+M Bayrak Not smooth, chromatic, or fluid...? What the hell do you call the run at 0:50-1:00?
David Hoch thats a diminished arpeggio with chromatics
Synyster gates and Andy should have a guitar contest😎
who needs pinky?
Sounds like Not Ready To Die! Awesome performance
Andy James does a better Syn solo then Syn himself haha
So you never listened to Avenged Sevenfold.
Andy is just too awesome!
Why not just learn this by ear?
impossible!
:p
Counting Sins you don't need to....we also have the video lol
To late
Counting Sins Hey, it's you! Lol
Awesome andy james
I swear every one of these quick licks Andy does, he sounds better than the artist hes trying to mimic. This dude is unreal.
Guitar playing isn't a sport, therefore no one is better than the next. Music is an expression of emotion and what you like. Andy is technically amazing on guitar, it's his job. Same goes with Syn, they make a living doing what they love.
to everyone who says Syn wouldn't be able to play this:, you have never been to a live A7X performance...
That guitar quality is so good.
Probably better than Synyster himself haha
maybe more clean
hahahahhaha No.
***** you must not know alot about andy james lol typical
I know, believe me.
***** then your probably unclear on what clean means or you havent played guitar yourself for atleast 5 or more years
This is a monster piece!!
As far as technique goes AJ is better by a mile. But Syn writes great songs..
Sandarpan Mukherjee
You dont know shit about guitar if you think hes better than Syn go and watch his video at the guitar centre 2014 on UA-cam.
@@lifegoeson2422 lol dude, Andy shits all over Syn.
I love this solo .
barely ever uses his pinky
Wow.. So clean
Gates doesn't make any vids such as this because he and the rest of his band are busy ripping off Metallica.
Yeah, because Metallica never ripped anybody off. I fucking love Metallica, but they did the same shit.
thats an ignorant thing to say its called taking others style and adding on to it thats how you get better music
No, Syn doesn't make videos like this because he's out touring or writing music at all times. That's his source of income. This is Andy James's.
andrew musgrove They are not adding other people's style - they are literally copying it.
:O Man, this is GENIUS!!!
This really doesnt sound like Gates at all. Its literally just a bunch of fast playing, no real style. Sure he hits some melodic points but there is no real flow or real "sound". Gates mainly mixes jazz legatto and metal together.
Andy,....you are a BEAST!!!
I like how he makes a video imitating a guitarist's style, and ends up playing even better than the guitarist he's trying to imitate. Don't get me wrong, I love Syn. He's one of my favorite guitarists. But let's be honest, he's got nothing on Andy James.
Not true tho, syn could play this just has clean has Andy plays it, we never saw all of syn's talent, and we never will..´
look up syn master class... syn is a much superior guitarist...
