Wow this brought back so many happy memories. Spent the best and happiest time in my RAF career there 83-86. Changed quite a bit mind you, didn't recognise some of the buildings. Mind you that coud be my memory trying to recall from 38 years ago :-) :-) :-)
Flown to RAF Gutersloh from Luton to join my unit in Celle in November 1973 , lots of snow when arrived there .Visit again in 74 to see the F4 Phantom. And in 1975 left Germany by Gutersloh and that was the last time I've been through the area. That's my little history about Gutersloh. Thanks.
464 Squadron 1945/6. Mosquito Mk VI. My Father commented that when they took over from Luftwaffe before the Germans went to camp they had a dinner at which the CO said “In five years we will be flying together against the Russians…………”
My dad worked here like 5 or 5 years ago (He's still in the army) but I haven't been living in Gütersloh since and today (I'm visiting my mother) And today I drove past it and seeing it overgrown and unpopulated is so unsettling. Gütersloh just looks haunted all together! (Not all of it) especially Franckstraße. In fact I used to live in a haunted house there but now it's vacant.
I've just stumbled across this video. All very sad as I spent much of my very happy three-year tour with RAF Germany (1979-82) working at Gutersloh fixing badly bent aircraft. I'll have to see what has happened to the old RAF Bruggen where I was based, but that'll probably depress me even more!
62 sqn mt 6 regt from April 97 to April 01 brilliant first posting they spent alot of money on improving this place after I left and now its left for ruin 😢
What does the German government plan to do with this abandoned former British RAF base I'm not European however I could think of some uses for these buildings either convert these buildings into social housing turn them into school buildings or turn them into a base for the current Luftwaffe or the German army if the German government doesn't want to use them then demolish them because just sitting empty will lead the usual problems of vandals drug aditics or arsonists and other antisocial trouble makers.Another idea the German government could sell the site to a developer under the condition that the site be redeveloped within a reasonable period of time.
there are plans to make it into a site for a city university campus for the university of bielefeld which is a city not far away. There are some listed buildings so not all can be knocked down

Another chapter in our history out the window !!!!!! I had a great time there at RAF Gutersloh , my first overseas tour ...mis it lots 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
