What I really love about watching you is that you don’t rush, no talking fifteen to the dozen ! It’s so much more like having a chat with a friend. I will look you up on instagram👍🇬🇧
Oh thank you, Amanda! 🥰❤️ And yes, please find me on IG! 👍🏻 Also I’ve never heard the phrase “fifteen to the dozen!” Not sure I know what it means (other than fast!) but I like it! 😂
Yes, please show us what you’re up to. I adore seeing what other quilters create. And by the way, since quilting is a marathon and not a sprint, you’re early start on next Christmas’s quilt is totally achievable. I’ve always enjoyed creating over time, and changing my mind mid-process is much more my style than following a prescribed plan. That approach isn’t for everyone, but that’s why it’s fun to see what other quilters are up to. We all do this differently. And thank you for showing us non-instagram”ers” what you’ve created. It’s so energizing and motivating. ❤
Shannon, I lol’d about “early start on next Christmas’s quilt!” 😂Thank you for your comment and for letting me know that this kind of video is a feature that you’d enjoy (or maybe be helpful!) 👍🏻And thanks always for the support! 🥰
Hey there, I did enjoy this video. I always like seeing how other people process the process. I wait until I have time to sit, listen and watch your videos. So I’m usually a little late to the party but I I do enjoy you videos. I don’t have any quilter friends, so in my mind you are my one quilter friend who gets it. Thanks so much.
Aww! Erin that is the sweetest-thank you so much! 🥰❤️ I think this type of video may become a regular feature on my channel, so we’ll be able to hang out and it’ll be like you’re with me in my house while I talk about my latest project(s)--and my frustrations and learning experiences with them! I hope you feel all the quilty love from me coming your way!! ❤️
I always enjoy your videos. I can relax and enjoy the chat. I like many UA-cam Channels, but some have turned into infomercials. I get it, it’s about money making, but it takes the fun out of it. Your videos are enjoyable! Thank you!
As you know, I am late to the party but I love seeing what you are working on. As you can tell, I am binge watching your older videos & thoroughly enjoying them.
There is no "late" to this party, Marsha. I'm happy to have you here at any time, and tend to believe that when you arrived is when you were supposed to arrive. So glad you are enjoying all the videos---binge watch all you want!!
Me too! 👍😉 But SO glad to hear a UA-camr actually acknowledge that many of us out here do not do Instagram, Twitter, or other platforms. 🥰💖 Thank you so much for this video showing what you're working on! 👏 I love it! 😁 I can barely keep up to date on my favorite UA-cam channels and still have time to work on my own projects. I just don't have the time to follow them all on all the other platforms as well. 😥 And I'm retired! I just don't know how people who are still working can keep up with it all! 😬 I also very recently learned about your channel and subscribed because I LOVE your content! 👌🤩 Quilting fabric and supplies have become extraordinarily expensive, and I love your approach to frugal ways to still indulge in our passion! 😁 And you explain your thought process in detail, allowing us to understand fully why you did certain things a certain way. Now we can benefit from your experiences (I don't like to refer to them as "mistakes" because as long as someone learns from them, they are still quite beneficial. ) I hope 🤞🤞🤞that you continue to address those of us out here who choose not to spend our PRECIOUS sewing/quilting time scrolling through numerous social media platforms. We still SO enjoy watching what you're doing and want to continue to do so. 🤘😎
I don't do Instagram or Facebook. Thank you for showing us your WIPs on UA-cam, I really enjoy your videos. I am from Louisiana and listening to your chats reminds me of home.
Thank you for sharing the projects on your ‘work’ table! I’m one of those folks that doesn’t do Facebook or Instagram, so your willingness to reach out, was very much appreciated and, since you asked, I’m one who is voting for more! ☺️
Oh I'm so glad that you liked the video and have cast your vote! Also, I usually address "my" folks (the faithful viewers like you) by name--but I don't think you're "Michael" or are you?
definitely love seeing your works in progress! plugging at it one block at a time is what I can manage. it's so hard to get a realistic take on how long it actually takes to make quilts when you look at full time quilters so your videos are much more relatable! your techniques for dealing with plaid is so clever and still so precise. really enjoying your channel, Cathy!
Thank you, Lalii! 🥰 And it’s so true, it IS hard to get a realistic take on how long it takes to make quilts!! (Especially watching full time quilters!) Thank you for the kind words about my pieces with plaid-of course I saw every flaw when I watched the video for editing purposes! 😂 I guess we are out own worst critics! Thanks for watching and for commenting! ❤️
Yes, yes and yes I want to see you do all those quilts, love all that your doing. I am always gobsmacked at your choices, love them all (well, quilting ones anyway) and yes, that’s a word I think🤣😊.
Please show us more! I love how you explain things and admit your mistakes so that we can learn what not to do. I love that you use thrifted shirts. A great idea and I learned from you what to look for and what to avoid. Thanks for being you!
Aww! Thank you, Joy! 🥰❤️ What wonderful things to say--I'm humbled! And based on the responses, I think we'll be doing more of these kinds of videos! 👍🏻🤓
Oh my goodness! This is such a fun video! I love that you enjoyed and used the coloring sheet. And I absolutely love how your quilt is coming together. I learned some things about gingham too. Not starching beforehand is so smart and definitely taking notes on your tips for cutting it straight.
Thank you, Christina! I do love this pattern so much---and the coloring sheet is such a great tool for visualizing (especially if I veer off as much as I did! lol!) I'm loving all the attention this quilt is getting, and I appreciate you so much for just being real and personable and supportive! ❤️
Love seeing what quilt projects you're working on. Also, I share your attention to detail, but also go with what the fabric wants to do. I've been hooked on using men's shirts for years. Saw a Fons and Porter oak leaf quilt pattern and thought it was made with plaids, so I started buying men's shirts in goodwill and other 2nd hand stores. Got addicted. Saw the quilt in person in Lancaster PA at a quilt museum and realized it was actually flannels. But, the shirt bug had struck, and I find that it's a better quality of cotton than a lot of quilting cottons. I also have used different types of fabric blends together. Cotton/poly, corduroy, flannel. I like scrappy and mixing. A lot of Amish quilters have switched to using cotton/polyester fabric. I visited a quilt shop in an Amish area, and the shop owner said they prefer it because it doesn't wrinkle as much as 100% cotton. Less ironing.
Thank you, Laura! 🥰❤️ It is so fun quilting with men's shirts...the shopping, the taking it apart, then finding projects to use the fabric in---I love it all! 🤩
I love seeing what you are working on. It's so inspiring. I love your "real" style. I feel like you are a friend just sharing what you are doing but you also gently add some advice and tips in as you are explaining what you are doing. It's refreshing and so relaxing. Keep up the great videos because I look forward to watching all of them so much!
Can't say enough, "how much I enjoy your channel." I bought both of the patterns that you suggested and have started the star quilt.... Really can't wait to start the eyelet lace. Also making easy baby quilts with 5" squares. YES, love seeing your "works in progress".... YOU HAVE ALOT TO SAY and I'm really loving it. When I found your channel, I had decided to make quilts from my husband's dress shirts..... Couldn't find anyone making quilts with men's dress shirts. My best friend (husband) left earth for Heavenly places last October and I wanted to make quilts with just his shirts. Needless to say but I will, and no words can express.... how much I miss him. No pressure, Cathy, 😁 but I'm grateful for your channel and I continue to learn so much. 💞
Oh Meyrick, thank you so much for this heartfelt comment! ❤️🥰 Grief and loss is so hard. But making beautiful and useful quilts (with shirts!) is a wonderful therapy. 😊🤓I’m looking forward to hearing if you enjoy making the star quilt blocks as I have-they just come together so beautifully! Thanks again for the words of encouragement and for you support! 🥰
Yes please, I would like more of these video's. I'm not on Instagram. I really love your style of video's. And your blocks are beautifull! Thank you for sharing! Love from Holland 🇳🇱
From Holland! 😍 How wonderful! 🥰 Thank you, Anja for letting me know and for being so complimentary of my videos and the blocks! ❤️ And so much love right back to you from America! ❤️🤓
Love the joy you offer 🥰 & your beautiful quilt. I’m so excited you have found such a perfect combination for the Denim and Flower swatches you 💕 love. Looking forward to more life lessons!!! Quilting has taught me to conquer mindlessness. I didn’t even realize how much impact it was going to have on my daily life.
Thank you, Ginger! ❤️ And me TOO! Those denim and flower shirts give me LIFE (as you know! 😘) "Conquer mindlessness"---that's a big part of it, isn't it? Quilting is that weird mix of focusing and paying very close attention, and also letting go (of life worries, at least for me!) I think that's why I have so much to say about it, because the whole time I'm quilting, I'm thinking! 🤓
I loved this video, I love to see what you are working on, it doesn't make me feel so bad then that I have a few projects on the go, and at different stages. I am working on a string pieced quilt with all my scraps, so every time I finish a quilt I add more to my strings, i want it to be for me, so I have a reminder of all the quilts I have completed, and it is growing organically with each one - that will probably take me forever to finish, but I'm loving the process. Such great tips on using plaids! Thank you
I never realized you were on Instagram and sharing your WIPs (works in progress), so I wholeheartedly appreciate that you’re sharing them here..😉 . I tried Instagram and it’s just not for this old gal…🤣. You are definitely very motivational when it comes to sparking creativity in the minds of us, your viewers-so I thank you. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family…🦃🥧
Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, B! Thank you for letting me know you support tot WIPs videos! ❤️ You're so welcome and thank you for watching and commenting and always being so supportive! 🥰
Great tips for precision cutting and piecing! I like a tiny bit of wonkiness with the micro plaids. I think it makes the quilt more endearing in the end.
Thank you, Sheri! ❤️ My quilting mentor/soulmate-y friend would probably agree with you 100%! I'm just thankful that I've gotten to a place where I can just leave and not try to "fix" it! 😂
I’m glad you and I got to sit down and chat about your projects! Lol. That’s exactly what it feels like. ☺️ I love both projects, but man I’m a super fan of the Quilty Love pattern and intend to do that one also. Heck, I like the other one too. 🤪 I will probably be adding it to the list as well.
LOL! Veronica, that is just the sweetest thing to say! ❤️ If only I could chat with you all for real! 🥰 I'm pretty hooked on that Quilty Love pattern too--so easy and so fun and it looks so neat when the block is done! 😍
Thank you for this teaching moment. I’ve avoided plaids and ginghams in all my quilting endeavours because they’re simply crazy-making! I’ll be giving them a try now with this video as a reference!
Hooray! 🥰❤️ I fuss and cuss about them from time-to-time (and get a little crazy too) but it is SO WORTH IT for what they add to the beauty of a quilt! 🤩 Thanks for watching and commenting! ❤️
We’ve been away so I didn’t get to watch all the way to the end of the video but home now and have just seen the navy star blocks that you have started making and I absolutely LOVE them 🥰 They are going to make an amazing quilt so I hope that you find lots more of those shirts 🤞🤞🇬🇧
Thank you, Glynis!! 🥰❤️ there is something very compelling about those navy blocks! I wish I had limitless time and budget and I would scour every thrift store in a 50 mile radius to find interesting low volume shirt pieces to make more blocks!! 🤓😂🤩
@@TheCatBirdQuilts Good luck with finding more 🤞🤞 If only we all had limitless time 🤔 but then there are people who would find this difficult to cope with 🤷♀️
Yes, I enjoyed this immensely. Very pretty, both of them. Long distance projects like that are called a 'work in progress' or WIPs. Or so I've heard, that's all I have, cause I have squirrels in my head. And yes, I'm so glad that someone recognizes that not everyone is on Instagram. That is part of the reason I don't get much done. I'm always scrolling with my phone, if I added another app to scroll through it would be even worse. 🙃 🤣🤣🤣 Anyway very pretty.
I’m currently procrastinating finishing my Christmas quilt to watch your Christmas quilt video, totally worth it! Thanks for the tips. I love the pattern and your fabric choices.
Thank you, Mandy! 🥰❤️ So glad you watched and commented! and thank you for the kind words! Now stop procrastinating and finish your quilt! (one of us needs to finish! 😂😘)
I just love love love your approach to chatting about your projects. We should all save our interesting yoke fabrics and send them to you! I just finished watching today’s video and while watching, I was deconstructing my latest 100% cotton clothing haul from the Salv Army thrift store ❤😂 (I say clothing because I always go through the dress and skirt rack looking for 100% cotton to add to the stash)
Hello again Cathy; I really love your Interpretation of this Quilt Pattern. It's so vibrant & the white background makes all of the Feature Colours & Designs really "Pop" Thank you once again for more great ideas on how Men's Dress Shirt Fabrics can be utilised in such a meaningful & fun way. Warmest Regards from Tasmania Australia 🙂
You are adorable. I wish you were my next-door neighbor. I've started quilting with men's shirts but I have a thrift store in the closet. My husband has a lot of shirts he doesn't wear. Keep the videos coming. Thank you, Jean Green
Sissie, I'm in love with those quilty stars blocks too! It truly is a great quilt pattern! ❤️ Happy Thanksgiving to you and Jon---I'm so thankful you found my videos too! 🥰😚
Cathy, this is a great video!!! Thank you so very much for answering my request (I’m sure I was not the only one 🤣) to address plaids! I learned so much, I look forward to applying those tips! It’s interesting how as quilters we can become so invested in perfecting our craft. Of course this attention to detail can sometimes drive me nuts. But for me it’s extremely enjoyable, it multiplies my creativity, and it’s good for my brain to problem solve for something I love to do🥰! Last thing I want to share is I get a kick out of how polite yet direct you are. Especially your response about if someone is critical of a wonky plaid then “that’s not very generous of you”, all with a smile on your face and given in love. We can all learn from your lead to be honest with a little humor and kindness 🧡. Keep the works in progress videos coming!!! P.S. For the second time, my need for perfection made me edit my comment. I keep spelling your name wrong; it with a K and not a C 🤦♀️!!! Hopefully third time will be the charm 🤷♀️.
Adrienne, thank you for this sweet comment! ❤️(and for spelling my name with a “C” 🥰) You’re welcome -and probably more to come about plaids in a video soon-ish! 👍🏻 I agree that sometimes the need for precision can drive us crazy, but you are SO RIGHT that solving problems about something I love is actually great! When I watched the edited video, I myself laughed about the very part you mentioned-but it is true! Some people aren’t very generous with their comments! (Although here on my channel, my viewers are SUPER kind and generous and I LOVE that. Thanks again for all your kind words 🥰 and for letting me know you liked the video! ❤️
Don't worry about the plaid being a little bit off because in the finished quilt, no one will even notice. they will see the beautiful pattern of the quilt first, then start noticing some of the fabric designs that catch their eye, but if the dig much deeper than that, they are too nosey. Your quilts are beautiful. (I have been making quilts since the 1970's)
LOL! Dorris, the "nosey" thing made me laugh!! 😂😂 I love it! ❤️ Thank you for your sweet words---and you have been quilting as long as I've been alive! HOW AWESOME IS THAT?!?!🤩
Enjoyed seeing what you're working on, and the processes you employ. I think you're Christmas quilt will be lovely when completed, and I agree it looks crisp and neat. The quilted star when you finish it I believe will be visually stunning, can't wait to see it.
Thank you, Linda! 🥰❤️ I think that quilted star might take me a year (or more) to get done but it is so much fun to look for yokes and cuffs that would work in that block-and it is a fun and easy block to make which is the best part! 🤓
Good morning from UK, just a short note to let you know how much I enjoy watching your videos. I have learnt so much from you. I have started collecting men’s shirts, I haven’t done any cutting yet, but I’m aiming to start making quilts in the new year. Best wishes from Jadranka
Thank you, Jadranka! ❤️ I’m so glad you enjoy watching my videos and are here with me in this space! Get ready for quilting with shirts-it is fun and addictive! 😊🤓👍🏻 And thank you for commenting-first time commenting here, yes?
Loved seeing what you are working on! I wanna see more! 😁As far as the warpy gingham and also the pieces that were going in different directions, I didn't notice AT ALL, until you pointed them out! Which surprised me! I would have thought that it would be more noticeable. Both of the quilts you are working on, are going to be beautiful! ❤
Thank you, Robin! ❤️ And isn't that just the most defining thing about quilts---when it's all said and done, NO ONE sees the imperfections and variations; they only see a veautiful quilt with character! 🥰
I would absolutely love to see everything you’re working on! I follow you on Instagram but I don’t look at it too often for fear of getting drawn in for hours at a time. 😬 I really enjoy hearing you talk about your projects and your process. Yay (🎉) for making a Christmas quilt! I’m sure it will be stunning. I’ve been meaning to make one for years but can never seem to decide on a pattern or fabrics 🙄, however, now you’ve inspired me to move that project up my to-do list! 🧵🎄
Aww, Rhonda! 🥰❤️ Thank you for all the kind words! And I'm so glad you've found inspiration here---can't wait to see when your Christmas quilt appears on your IG! 🤩
I love the sneak peeks! I'm following you on insta, but I hardly ever go there. I admit I was a bit worried about the blue in the Christmas quilt on the coloring page, but in execution it looks much more icy and seasonal. Festive! A lesson to not only trust the process, but trust the process of others, especially when you already know they have a good eye and create beautiful things!
Steff, it's funny you should mention that blue--I'm still not totally sold, but I think it's gonna turn out pretty in the end! I almost went with a lighter color blue but I was afraid it wouldn't stand out enough against the dark red and dark green! I guess we'll all just have to wait and see! 😳🤓 And you're right, there's something to trusting that someone else's vision (and quilt) will be lovely even if you don't necessarily agree with their choices! ❤️
I do agree! I just didn't have the vision at first. 😅I think I'm just so used to being able to see where you're going (lawd, I sound like we've both been on this channel for decades), and this one surprised me. It's so educational to be able to see even more of your process. The test block looks to be the perfect blue, but even if I didn't like it, at the end of the day... I don't have to! It's your quilt, and it's really enjoyable to see how you get there!
I love seeing the different projects you are working on and not necessarily waiting until they are all done before you share with us. That's no fun :) I love both of your projects... the Christmas quilt blocks are beautiful and enjoy seeing the process. The Quilty Star blocks really speaks to me and I'm so excited to see where it goes. The yokes.. who knew! Cracking up at your impersonation of 'a little off...' LIfe is sometimes a little wonky and that's a-ok with me. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family❤
I don't do instagram or facebook but do enjoy watching your process. I'm new to quilting - did a basic baby quilt for my now 31 yr old son and then made a crib sized one for my first grandchild last year. I'm more of a garment seamstress but thought it was really cool to watch you clean up on the men's shirts at the thrift shop.
Thank you, Leann!! 🥰❤️ I’m in awe of you garment seamstresses-that is a true skill! Quilting seems like a walk in the park compared to making clothes!! 🤩Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I’m hoping to hit up my thrift stores again soon and see if I can find some holiday fabrics! 🤞🏻🤓😊
Ooooo. I really like the pattern, and fabric too, of the Christmas quilt. I am drawn to patterns that appear to have curved pieces, but, are straight lines. Enjoy all your videos!! Happy Thanksgiving 😊
Janie, me TOO! I love the look of curves without having to do the actual curve sewing! 😍 And this pattern is so great...if you're interested, you should get it! 🥰 Thanks for all your support and Happy Thanksgiving to you, too! 🥰
Yes! I definitely do like to see what you are working on! I am glad you pointed out the stronger stripes in the gingham! That makes perfect sense! I don’t know that I would have noticed it if you had not pointed it out! I should say, I would probably have noticed it, but I wouldn’t know why it stood out! Now I do! Love the stars with the navy background!
Thank you, Sherry! ❤️🥰 We will probably include a regular installment of WIP’s if it appears that my wonderful viewers enjoy it-so thank you for letting me know! As much as I love and work with gingham, every time I make a project, I learn more about how to use it! 🤓So glad it was helpful! ❤️
That is so interesting about a dominant direction for gingham fabric. I just cut a baby quilt's worth of fabric and I had to stop the video and go check..thank goodness, they are all going in the same direction. Crisis averted! :)
Watching the video and paying attention only to the mug - just yesterday bought one just like yours to a friend as a Christmas gift 😂 Also, cannot wait to see the blue quilt come together. It will be stunning!
Thank you, Magdalena! ❤️🥰 I have to say I can see those navy blocks coming together in my head and I’m excited for it! Yes, I LOVE my Pantone mug(s) (I also have a green one!) the coating on the ceramic has worn off on the red one but I still use it because it’s my favorite! 🤩😍🤓
TY for sharing your WIP. I am not on IG, so it is great to see projects here. Your blue stars are heavenly. Your design aesthetic is so fresh. I would love advice on working with plaids. I shall be making a quilt for my brother, and thought of using the autumn leaf pattern. Crooked bothers me, so I might have to find some other pattern. I would adore using flannels, but that might be a step too far, in difficulty! Could you also discuss how to pick the quilting pattern? (for the actual quilt sandwich holding it together.) I know you probably have a lot to say, LOL.
Diane, you know I have a lot to say about darn near everything! And I often say, if I don't have an opinion already, just gimme a minute! 😂 Glad you liked the WIP video! ❤️ I suspect we'll be doing more of these! 🥰 Once I get my head together about plaids and HOW I want to talk about it, you can bet I'll be making that video! As for the actual quilting part---i have to confess I don't think it's my strong suit! But i'll be happy to share what I think about when I try to make that decision! ❤️
OoooWweeee. I love this pattern, and your adaptation. Each video I feel I learn more strategies for fabric combinations (an area in which I struggle). Thanks for all you do to inspire us.
I had noticed "that something" about gingham before but couldn't quite see what it was so thanks for solving the mystery. Also, thanks for showing us more of your work as l am not on Instagram either! Those blocks are delicious!! Happy Thanksgiving
Thank you so much, Giselle! 🥰❤️ Ok, so I'm gonna include you in "Team Works-in-progress Video!" 😂 Also, "delicious"---new favorite descriptor for quilts! 😋
Angela-me too! I am really hoping and believing that I will find some fabrics with that navy that has a little bit of red, or green or orange--I would love to have a star with just subtle hints of every color! 🤩😍🤞🏻🤓
Love to see your tips for using these very strong patterned fabrics. After my first thrift store haul, I attempted to put them together into some sort of colorway, and got frustrated with it all. Since then I've been focusing on not buying the pretty plaids and ginghams, because I can't envision how to use them other than as a binding. (also, I was SUPER excited to find a couple Denim & Flower shirts last week! They are SO soft, and I almost hesitated to cut them up, because the details and accents are so perfect together.)
Angela, see what I mean about the Denim & Flower shirts?! They're just perfect. 🤩 Yes, working with shirt plaids (especially together!) can be very challenging! Although I will put gingham with just about everything--including more gingham! 😂 Thanks for watching and for your comment! ❤️
Thank you, Anita! I was just thinking of you yesterday...not really sure why, just had you on my mind! 🥰❤️ Much love right back to you and I hope you are well!
Right? I won't take it apart, but now that I know, those next blocks will have the ginghams turned the "right" way! 🤓 And yay! Thanks for letting me know! ❤️
Oh yay! ❤️ Glynis, I was telling my husband it's hard for me to imagine what it would be like to watch my channel without having all the gaps filled in by photos on IG! So I guess I got my answer from you! As always, so supportive! 🥰
Super cute pattern! It can look like snowflakes ( the background) The star quilt will be gorgeous, no matter how long it takes.I might have to make an Instagram account lol I don't do social media but it seems a really good spot for getting inspiration :)
Freddie--thank you!! and thanks about the star quilt too---I can see it in my head and I think It might be really lovely when it's done (as long I can be patient and keep working on it!) ❤️ IG is SUCH a good place for inspiration but it's easy to go down the rabbit hole with it! 😂😱
I'm now following Kindred Quilt Company. Thanks for the info! Love your quilty brain. I seem to like to think about all the same things, too. Would love a video on background fabrics sometime. Love the white you chose on the eyelet pattern and then the navy on the patchwork stars.💙🤍🐦⬜🔷
Thank you, Susan! ❤️Love that you think of the same things I do-it makes me feel less weird! 😂😘👍🏻 I will put “background fabric” in my notes for future videos! Thanks for the suggestion! 🤓❤️
Just loved seeing what your doing. That shirt that crawls, ever thought of putting a light weight fusible interfacing on it? Works with t shirt material. I have bought it a my local quilt store. Again, love your work.
Thank you, Marsha! ❤️ Yes, I have considered using interfacing---but I just don't like interfacing (in general) at all. For no good reason that I can explain! 😂
I’ve been wanting to make a Nordic looking Christmas quilt. I purchased a large red gingham shirt and a crimson solid shirt that look like yours! I also have green pinstripes and red pinstripes. I may also have a green gingham. I just haven’t found the pattern that speaks to me. I also haven’t decided if I will use all of the shirts. Some of the reds are darker than others.
What a coincidence that you found the same shirts I did! 😊 green pinstripes and green gingham sounds amazing! Have you seen Lo and Behold Stitchery’s pattern “Knitted Star?” I think it is gorgeous and it feels Nordic to me. Just exactly like a knitted sweater!
I would know ,I love gingham and it drives me crazy love your tutorials❤ happy thanksgiving, by the way I don't starch. Until the quilt is complete. Love this block maybe after Christmas we can have block of the week would love to work Along with you like so many others who love your channel 🙏😇⭐
Happy Thanksgiving, Neva! 🥰I am back and forth with starching (before, during and/after)-I’ve tried all the ways and each has its benefits! Thanks so much for your encouragement as always-I doubt I’m down for a block of the week, but you know I never say never!! 😂 Hang on for tomorrow’s video though-you may decide you want to make what I’m making with me on this one! ❤️🤩🤓
When cutting gingham, through trial and error I've learned to cut one side with scissors along a line, then wet and adjust to cut the final piece. This helps block warping.
It seems that the warpy bits are in the area that was stretched under arms and depending on the shirt size and how it fit the person other places like around the waist and such. I doubt if ironing could stretch it so it wouldn’t wash out. It was probably user influence not quilter influenced. I love it and I might make one for my daughter who is very girly and always loved the eyelet lace dresses I made for her.
I think you're right about some of the warpy bits (in the underarms for sure) but I also am notorious for pushing my fabric across my ironing board and getting it all out of whack. That eyelet lace quilt is just so lovely and I can see your daughter just loving it! 🥰
@@TheCatBirdQuilts when she was a little girl (we have 4 daughters and she was our 3rd) my grandmother and Aunt were coming for a visit. We were in the middle of building our new house on a corner of the farm I grew up on (as has my dad and his Dad). We had no doors on the bedrooms yet, they were in the basement waiting to be stained and hung. We had the bedrooms without baseboards or casings on the doors and window panes. I had found some interesting wall paper to do one wall and we where painting the rest. None of the beds had “bedspreads” that were decorative. We had lots of tattered blankets but they weren’t pretty I had two weeks by this time and I set out to make curtains and bedspreads for the kids rooms. Her wallpaper was all kinds of daisy type blossoms but they were made with petals in different sizes of ginghams and eyelet in blue and green. Our palates handled bright loud prints in the 70’s & 80’s I think. She called eyelet lace “holy fabric” and anything I made had to have some holy fabric in it. So I had blue gingham and green gingham already and I dug out a pattern in a simplicity magazine. All of the ginghams were cotton poly, the re-elect
Oops. Send before I was done. All of the ginghams were cotton poly and many of the eyelets were as well. The only other fabric was a rayon print that was on a white background with tiny little flowers in the same blue and green as the ginghams. Later I made crisscross Pricilla curtains of large green gingham for the curtain panels and the ruffles and tie-backs were the small blue gingham. I backed it with two widths of soft soft flannel. I won’t say it was a perfect quilt but it was loved. It was a double bed size and she carried it everywhere. It went with her when she got married. It was her comfort when he only daughter died. I mended that quilt so many times and put new batting and backing on it at least 3 times before it was deemed “officially retired”. FTR it was that rayon fabric that disintegrated first. There’s a lesson in that. But it lasted 40 years before that retirement. So you can see how long gingham and eyelet have been in her life. I think there might be some unusual genetic connections in our familiy’s
Would a walking foot help with the crawling cotton poly you love? I didn't know if it helps or if you tried it. Love your projects...I don't have an Instagram account. Thank you so much! Happy Thanksgiving!
Suzy, it might help, but I don't enjoy regular sewing with a walking foot (and now have more cotton shirts than I know what to do with) but I think it's a great suggestion! 👍🏻 Thank you for you kind words and for watching! 🥰❤️
I know I would personally want to be straight-ish, but the contrary quilter in the back of my head, "What if they were just a bit off kilter?" & then you pointed out the one that is & I agree, it isn't noticeable. If anything its just part of the personality of the fabric. (& had that make do look that I love.)
Right!?! I want them straight and then when they aren't, I go to point it out to my husband and sometimes can't find it (especially once the quilt top is finished or the quilting is done)---which always makes me laugh! 😂
@@TheCatBirdQuilts I quit pointing out. "No one" else ever sees... even with a detailed diagram of the error. (Or maybe they just know that I make boundary pushing choices - how medium can I get and have it still be light?)
The advice from the designer is pretty much the old question how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time and really is applicable to life and living it incrementally. I never thought about plaids and gingham that way but when you point it out it's very obvious. I've seen a couple of other quilters sort of fussy cut their plaids or gingham. Lessons Learnt is one example. She was using a large printed gingham - which is totally different than a woven - and wanted them straight so she fussy cut them and those blocks just sing! But the reality is that when a quilt is complete and quilted, those kind of things won't really be noticeable. And if someone points it out, then they aren't your friend - haha!!
LOL! Romp is definitely NOT a quilting term! 😂😂 It is one of MANY sound effects that I interject into all of my talking (both in person and on video)...but if we want to make it official, I'd totally support that! 😘
What I really love about watching you is that you don’t rush, no talking fifteen to the dozen ! It’s so much more like having a chat with a friend. I will look you up on instagram👍🇬🇧
Oh thank you, Amanda! 🥰❤️ And yes, please find me on IG! 👍🏻
Also I’ve never heard the phrase “fifteen to the dozen!” Not sure I know what it means (other than fast!) but I like it! 😂
Fifteen to the dozen is my new favorite “rushing it” phrase. Thank you!
@Gail Kintner aww, Gail! 🥰 Thank you so much! ❤️
Another great video, Cathy! Yes, please consider continuing to share your WIPs! I find you so inspirational.
Thank you, Dana! ❤️ Based on the feedback in the comments, it looks like I might be doing this as a regular feature! 😊👍🏻
@@TheCatBirdQuilts ❤️
I always enjoy your videos. I can relax and enjoy the chat. I like many UA-cam Channels, but some have turned into infomercials. I get it, it’s about money making, but it takes the fun out of it. Your videos are enjoyable! Thank you!
Thank you, Jennifer! ❤️ If you ever feel like I'm starting to sound like I'm selling something, let me know---I don't like that either!
Me too! 👍😉
But SO glad to hear a UA-camr actually acknowledge that many of us out here do not do Instagram, Twitter, or other platforms. 🥰💖
Thank you so much for this video showing what you're working on! 👏
I love it! 😁
I can barely keep up to date on my favorite UA-cam channels and still have time to work on my own projects. I just don't have the time to follow them all on all the other platforms as well. 😥 And I'm retired! I just don't know how people who are still working can keep up with it all! 😬
I also very recently learned about your channel and subscribed because I LOVE your content! 👌🤩
Quilting fabric and supplies have become extraordinarily expensive, and I love your approach to frugal ways to still indulge in our passion! 😁
And you explain your thought process in detail, allowing us to understand fully why you did certain things a certain way. Now we can benefit from your experiences (I don't like to refer to them as "mistakes" because as long as someone learns from them, they are still quite beneficial. )
I hope 🤞🤞🤞that you continue to address those of us out here who choose not to spend our PRECIOUS sewing/quilting time scrolling through numerous social media platforms. We still SO enjoy watching what you're doing and want to continue to do so. 🤘😎
I don't do Instagram or Facebook. Thank you for showing us your WIPs on UA-cam, I really enjoy your videos. I am from Louisiana and listening to your chats reminds me of home.
Oh my goodness, Mary! 🥰 You got me in the feels with the "reminds me of home"!❤️ Thank you for you comment and I'm so glad you enjoy the videos! 🥰
@@TheCatBirdQuilts The UA-cam account is in my husband’s name, who enjoys watching your channel as well! He’s married to a quilter named Denise. 🥰
@@michaelcaselli2716 Denise! ❤️ Yay! Now I can address you properly. 🥰 And thank Michael for watching too! 🤩
definitely love seeing your works in progress! plugging at it one block at a time is what I can manage. it's so hard to get a realistic take on how long it actually takes to make quilts when you look at full time quilters so your videos are much more relatable! your techniques for dealing with plaid is so clever and still so precise. really enjoying your channel, Cathy!

Aww! Thank you, Lorena!🥰❤️ And yes, gobsmacked is a word!! 😂 (I actually like it a lot!) 🤓
Just love listening to you. It is like having a conversation with a good friend.
That is such a wonderful compliment! Thank you, Deborah! ❤️
AMAZING explanation
I think its so interesting that you pointed out horizontal and vertical positioning. Thank you
Thank you, Brenda! ❤️You know I can get deep in the weeds on a topic 😂, so I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I like seeing your works in progress. I get inspired when I see beautiful things others are making.
Thank you, Pamela! 🥰❤️ I like seeing other people's WIP's too (for the same reason!)
It's an optical illusion when I look at the gingham. It all looks so pretty.
Oh my goodness, thank you! And yes...that gingham will mess with the way your eyes see it if you look too long! ❤️
Oh my goodness, Gena! Thank you! 🥰❤️ That is such a great compliment! ❤️
Yes yes! Please more, I am one that don't do Facebook or Instagram!! I live what your doing and watch everyone of your shows. Thank you
Oh thank you so much!! 🥰
Thank you for the update video. I don't do social media, but love to see what others are doing in sewing and quilting.
Thank you, Andrea, for letting me know! 👍🏻 Glad you like to see what I'm doing! ❤️
What a beautiful and cozy way to honour him!
"Conquer mindlessness"---that's a big part of it, isn't it?
Thank you
Thank you, Sue!! Any time I encourage you that you're not alone is time well spent! Your string pieced quilt sounds like it will be amazing!! 🤩😍
Bingo! I'm not on Instagram. Thanks for showing your current project. I love the white surrounding the color pieces.
Thank you, Beth! ❤️ And good to know---so I guess that makes you "Team Works-in-Progress Video" then! 😘
That Christmas quilt is going to be gorgeous!
Thank you, Jenna! 🥰❤️
There is always Christmas in July! Love the block, love the colors and the gingham. Now I think I need to get that pattern. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you, Linda! ❤️ I think you should get it...every variation that I've seen is just as lovely as the one before it! 🥰
Great information, especially on the gingham! I No wonder your blocks look so perfect. I love your quilts, and your approach.
Thank you so much!❤️ (I promise they look less perfect in person! 😘)
I love works in progress videos. It is so helpful to hear your thought process and how things evolve.
Oh yay! ❤️Thanks, Debbie! 🥰
Thanks, Patricia! ❤️
I just finished watching today’s video and while watching, I was deconstructing my latest 100% cotton clothing haul from the Salv Army thrift store ❤😂
(I say clothing because I always go through the dress and skirt rack looking for 100% cotton to add to the stash)
Oh Beth, I love that so much! 🥰❤️ (that you were breaking down clothes while watching!) How perfect! ❤️
You are adorable. I wish you were my next-door neighbor. I've started quilting with men's shirts but I have a thrift store in the closet. My husband has a lot of shirts he doesn't wear. Keep the videos coming.
Thank you,

I think in progress is very educational! And I find all your videos interesting!
thank you, Lucile! ❤️
Cathy,
this is a great video!!!
❤️(and for spelling my name with a “C” 🥰)
You’re welcome -and probably more to come about plaids in a video soon-ish!
HOW AWESOME IS THAT?!?!🤩
Love seeing what you are working on.
Awesome! Thanks, Chris! ❤️
Your instructions are so precise….love them. And of course, keep us posted on your WIPs😊
Thank you, Tami! ❤️ Will do!
And thank you for commenting-first time commenting here, yes?
Loved seeing what you are working on! I wanna see more! 😁As far as the warpy gingham and also the pieces that were going in different directions, I didn't notice AT ALL, until you pointed them out! Which surprised me! I would have thought that it would be more noticeable. Both of the quilts you are working on, are going to be beautiful! ❤
Thank you, Robin! ❤️ And isn't that just the most defining thing about quilts---when it's all said and done, NO ONE sees the imperfections and variations; they only see a veautiful quilt with character! 🥰
As always, very rewarding viewing.
Thank you, Sarah! 🥰
I learned some useful tips from you today for working with gingham. Thank you!
You’re so welcome! ❤️ And that’s wonderful!🤓
Seeing works of others in progress always helps fuel my own creativity. Thanks!
You’re welcome, Sheryl! ❤️ and thanks for commenting and letting me know that this type of video would be helpful! (Or enjoyable!) 😊👍🏻
Yes, I enjoy seeing your works in progress. I hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving!
Thank you, Lilybee!❤️🥰 and same to you!

Thank you, Sue! ❤️
I'm not on Instagram either so enjoyed this video of what you are working on. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Cynthia! I think based on the response today, we'll be doing more of these!
I love this pattern, too. I find it so captivating! 🤩 Thank you for being here with me--it means more than you know! ❤️
Lovely blocks. Yes to more like this video. Love how you figure things out.
Thank you, Kylie!!! 🥰❤️🤓
Love both of your WIP quilt projects. I am already thinking of different color waves for the star pattern.
Big love coming to you from beautiful NC. Your precision is inspirational and I love the way you share with us as you learn. ♥️
Thank you, Anita! I was just thinking of you yesterday...not really sure why, just had you on my mind! 🥰❤️ Much love right back to you and I hope you are well!
I enjoy all of your tutorials.
Aww! Thank you! 🥰
Thank you very much, Cathy. 😊
You are very welcome, Elke! ❤️ Thank you for watching and commenting! 🥰
Looking at the red block I can visually see if the odd 2 are switched the pattern will work. Yes like to see your projects
Right? I won't take it apart, but now that I know, those next blocks will have the ginghams turned the "right" way! 🤓 And yay! Thanks for letting me know! ❤️
I’m not on Instagram - by choice and I’m sure I’m missing lots, but not enough to make me sign up 🤷♀️ So videos like this are great for me 🎉👏👏🇬🇧
Oh yay! ❤️ Glynis, I was telling my husband it's hard for me to imagine what it would be like to watch my channel without having all the gaps filled in by photos on IG! So I guess I got my answer from you! As always, so supportive! 🥰
@@TheCatBirdQuilts thank you 😊🇬🇧
Will start looking at gingham now. Thanks for the info. So fun to see what you are working on.
Thank you, DiAnn! 😘❤️ Also, gingham never disappoints! 🤩🤓
I love seeing all of your videos 💖 Happy Thanksgiving 🍁
Happy Thanksgiving, Kat! And thank you so much--I’m glad you’re loving the videos! 🥰❤️
Thank you for sharing!
Yw! And thank you for watching and commenting! ❤️
Love this block maybe after Christmas we can have block of the week would love to work
Along with you like so many others who love your channel 🙏😇⭐
Happy Thanksgiving, Neva! 🥰I am back and forth with starching (before, during and/after)-I’ve tried all the ways and each has its benefits! Thanks so much for your encouragement as always-I doubt I’m down for a block of the week, but you know I never say never!! 😂
Hang on for tomorrow’s video though-you may decide you want to make what I’m making with me on this one! ❤️🤩🤓
When cutting gingham, through trial and error I've learned to cut one side with scissors along a line, then wet and adjust to cut the final piece. This helps block warping.
What a great idea! Thanks for sharing! ❤️🤓
This is great for me...I don't even know how to Instagram
LOL! Thank you, Susan! ❤️
Very Nordic looking, beautiful
I hadn't noticed that, Bonnie, but you're right! 😍 And thanks! ❤️
So VERY pretty. Are you going to share the pattern?
Thank you, Stella!❤️ Yes, I’ll probably make a “Great Quilt Patterns” video about the Eyelet Lace Quilt from Kindred Quilt Co!
@@TheCatBirdQuilts I understand. I have a walking foot but I haven't tried it yet. So many things, so little time!
Love this kind of video and not on Instagram…
Oh yay! And so I'll take this as a vote for doing more like this! ❤️
Is there a starch you prefer to prep your cutting ?
Julie, I'll confess I just make my own from Argo cornstarch, water, and a few drops of lavender essential oil. 🤷🏻♀️
All true facts! It has taken me awhile to embrace the fact that those little variations are not noticeable at all in the end! 🤓❤️
Romp is an actual quilt term?
I know i started as a dressmaker so i have spent time trying to learn quilting terms. Lol
LOL! Romp is definitely NOT a quilting term! 😂😂 It is one of MANY sound effects that I interject into all of my talking (both in person and on video)...but if we want to make it official, I'd totally support that! 😘
