Don't loose your tag line of " I've got a lot to say about that" I love that tag line. It's perfect just like you laughing. It's authentically you. Thank you so much for these videos. You explain so well
thank you, Theresa! You know I didn't mean to not say it...but Lord knows I do worry that I'm gonna wear it out!! 😂 Thank you so much for your encouragement and support---it means the world to me! 🥰
Perfectly described! We’ll done! 🌈👍🏼
Thank you, Shannon!🥰
Seeing fabric makes it much easier to understand colors than only using a color wheel. Thanks!!
You're welcome! Thank you!!
I am really enjoying your channel! As a minimalist person, I love the idea of upcycling men's shirts.
Thank you so much!! 🥰❤️
You are far from "dull". You are very colorful! :D Lovely video! Keep them coming! ❤
Thank you, Robin! ❤️
Best video yet! (For me.) This warm/cool color business with transitional colors always seemed to be a step too far for me. You made it comprehensible with plain language and excellent examples. Thanks for that! Now, if I can only put it into practice....
Oh Sarah. This comment has made me just so happy! ❤️ Thank you so watching and commenting and for your kind words---so glad this one hit you just right! 🤓😊
Oh my gosh! I see and “feel” this. You make it so understandable! 😘
Thank you, Sissie! 😘
I love your videos! I have trouble picking colours, not only for my quilts but also.for clothing, but I think you explained it well. The proof will be when I look through my stash to try to choose fabrics!
The VERY BEST COLOR BREAKDOWN
Thank you!
Oh my goodness, Pamela! Thank you! 🥰
A few years ago, I was researching historical fabrics and dyes. One interesting fact I came across was the use of "crimson" for those bluish, cool reds, and "scarlet" for the orangey, warm reds. Having those terms defined has helped me suss out all the red options.
Oh, and "muted" was often referred to as "saddened!"
ok, so I learned something new today because of this comment, and as you may know, learning is my FAVORITE!! 🥰 Love love love the interesting fact about "saddened" and I also love the reminder of "crimson" as a great color to name reds and I had TOTALLY forgotten about "scarlet" as another red-naming option. LOVE IT! Thank you! ❤️
To me muted colors are softer or less intense. You did a great job describing color theory.
So true-they definitely feel and look softer! Thank you so much! 🥰
Your explanation was so interesting, Cathy! I have had a difficult time pairing up fabrics, and now I see why. When putting two types side by side, I can pretty easily see if they “go” together. But once you begin introducing more colors, it starts getting confusing. Your video is a very good overview for those of us who lack the experience with color. I found this very helpful…….thanks! 😉…….❤️Brenda
Thank you, Brenda! I’m so glad it was helpful to you! 🥰❤️
Excellent video. This has definitely added to my understanding of colour and how to better match. I appreciate how important it is to first get some taxonomy and definition of terms straight before communication can be clear. You are epic. 💕💕💕
And you are unfailingly kind and supportive! So glad this video was useful to you and thank you for your high praise! ❤️
Awesome video💕 Definitely most helpful for gaining a better understanding of COLOR! So much I had never thought of! Thank you so very much!
Thank you, Rebecca! ❤️
Nice job! Yes, those English semantics can get us confused...again! And it is so true how no one seems to see the same colors. As a child, my mother always told me that I couldn't wear red or yellow. Now I know that I can wear "warm" reds or yellows (tomato or mustard) but not cool tones (cherry or pale daffodil). Karen Brown also has a video on color that is helpful to quilters. She uses some different terms, but her examples are good, as well. Again, kudos to you for another great video 👏👏👏
Thank you, Suzy! I have seen Karen Browns video(s) (I think she has several now) on color and she is so thorough; I love her!
Ps I’m the opposite…I look better in cool reds and yellows! 🤓😂🥰
@@TheCatBirdQuilts Goodness! That was quick! I thought I was up early, but you are probably on Eastern time 😆 I think your video is better for beginners. Very clear and not as complicated. Blessings!
This was a great video and I enjoyed it very much. And your explanations are great in helping understand what you are referring to. In my first career I was a hair stylist and if you didn’t understand the color wheel and color theory, coloring a person’s hair could have been trouble. Thank you again and keep the videos coming, I love them 😍🤩😎
Thank you, Jenna! And my goodness, YES to stylists needing to understand color theory ...and stylists are unsung heroes, btw! My hat is off to anyone in that career...it is as tough as healthcare! ❤️
What a beautiful and complete explanations ! I like your choices and I also like the association between colours. It's also very interesting to know that certain combinations have pretty names like "mustard", " "royal blue or green", " magenta" and so on. In romanian language we also have "greige" meaning something between grey and beije !!😄 It's so funny to learn the specific names of different combinations of basic colours. Maybe you will have a video with this names . I really enjoy your presentations always thinking at my husband's shirts!!😅
So, untill next time, best wishes from Romania 🌼🍀🌺🌻🌸
Oh I love this so much! ❤️ So much love and appreciation from me (here in the US) to you in Romania! Maybe one day I will make a color video with names---I love the idea! 🤓 Also, I will now be using "greige" as one of my color descriptions! 🥰 Thank you for watching and commenting and being on this journey with me! ❤️
I am always slower quilting than my friends, but it is worth it. It’s not just being busy with work & family which is true, but I spend a lot of time thinking about what I want to do with a quilt - which fabrics & where? It is worth the wait!
100% agree! And same, Julia. SAME.❤️🥰
This video is very well done. Great examples. Well organized. Thank you.
Thank you, Peggy. That means so much! ❤️ (and Roger too!😘)
Thank you for making this color theory chat so clear and practical.
You're welcome! ❤️ Thank you for watching!
I have a hard time describing colors that are not "basic", but my mind can really rebel when some colors are placed together. Not that I know enough to say why, just that jarring feeling when at least I do not like the combination. I think the way colors react to each other is fascinating, and I thank you for the lesson today that helps me realize why some colors together look differently than when they are by themselves.
Kathy, thank you! I think a LOT of people have your experience with color…difficulty describing them and also disliking combinations without being able to say why!
So glad you found the video helpful! 🥰
Great job, once again, but it was so hard to pay attention to your lesson with that GORGEOUS quilt hanging behind you! 😉Love, love, LOVE it!!! Is that one of yours? Thank you for bringing us such practical info week after week!
Thank you! ❤️ Yes, it IS one of mine! I did a video on that very quilt (it was a work in progress for me at the time) called “Great Quilt Patterns: the Elena quilt” which talks about the pattern. And THIS Friday we’re airing a video about the whole quilt process called “Quilt Stories”…so check it out!!
Good early morning to you☕☕☕thank you for your explanation ,have you ever read the secret lives of color? Its a wonderful book with a story behind each color. Pat sloan is finishing up a quilt go see her videos. Again MS Cathy thank you love your videos❤❤🐥
Thank you, Neva! I will check that book out!!
Great info! Thanks.
Thank you, Sheryl!
Very helpful! Thank you.
Thank you, Deborah! ❤️
Thank you so much for explaining colors, I have such a hard time placing them together. Have a great week.
Thank you, Lucila! I think most people do; I get stumped sometimes and have to recruit my youngest daughter (the one with the great eye for color) to sort it out!😂
And you too--I hope it is a colorful and enjoyable week!🥰
The quilt behind you is really pretty! Did you design it yourself? I like your lesson on warm and cool colors. In my brain, I see blue grays, green grays, beige grays. I also see pink beige, green beige, gray beige, yellow beige. I feel like color matching, etc. is a strong point of mine, and is easy for me. I think you have strong color matching ability, too!
Thank you, Sherry! ❤️ I did not design it-this is the Elena Quilt by Erica from Kitchen Table Quilting. I talked about it in a “Great Quilt Patterns” video! 👍🏻And thank you, for the kind compliment-I’ve always loved color pairing even since I was a little girl! 😊
Very good explanation! Showing the examples was very helpful. The word "saturation" has been hard for me to grasp, but "muted" makes a lot of sense to me. Thank you!
Thank you, Janie! I’m glad it was helpful to you!
Thanks for a great tutorial.
Thank you, DiAnn, for your comment and support! ❤️
This was very helpful. Thanks.
Oh yay! 🥰❤️ you’re welcome!!
Great tutorial. I notice that you have coloured pencils in jars, probably separated into warm, cool and neutrals including greens.
More noticeable is that stunning quilt behind you - can you please talk us through the making of it? Thanks
Cheshire, thank you so much! Yes, I do tend to like order...even in my colored pencil jar! Good news, you can hear the "back story" of the quilt blocks and some of the challenges I had with this quilt in a video I've already made: "Great Quilt Patterns: The Elena Quilt!" Even better news, you won't have to wait long to hear more about it....this Friday (CST in the US) we're airing the "Quilt Story" about that very quilt! 🥰
This is why I use everything (or ALL or the greens) or just concentrate on value & ignore the colors/patterns.
LOL! Amy, why am I not surprised?!? 😂😘
@@TheCatBirdQuilts At the end of the day, we have to be who we are. Working on projects that capture our imaginations and ignite our own desires. :)
Great tutorial...well presented!
Several years ago I bought a piece of fabric that l saw as a medium tan with small neutral stars ...kinda lt tan.ln all that time l have never been able to fit that fabric into anything l tried it with!! I finally used it the other day as the inside backing of the quilted top of a pillow sham ...never to be seen..lol
I have a good eye for colour but that confounded me.
Thank you, Giselle! I have one of those in my stash RIGHT NOW. It irritates me that I can't find anything to put it with. 😑😂 But I love your solution to the problem! 🤓❤️
Thank you
So helpful! I was choosing for a baby quilt last night and got stuck because one fabric was wrong…. Once I took that one out everything came together!
Oh yay!! I don't know what it is about that "one wrong fabric"...that was the issue with the Fall quilt blocks, too! That one orange was just wrong and when I was willing to let it go, the rest just fell in place! ❤️
Excellent explanation of colors and undertones! I look at the first few quilts I made vs recent quilts and can see a huge improvement in color selection. It takes practice. (And grays…..I’ve been looking for a gray to paint my kitchen cabinets. Many have blue undertones, which I don’t want…so looking for a gray with a more brown/tan undertone. 3 years later, I’m still searching for the right color!)
Thank you, Jo! My husband and I call that gray “toasty gray”…and it is dang near impossible to find the perfect one!!
Try Elephants Breath by Farrow and Ball (Paint)
First, yes was tempted to log in at 1am to watch if I hadn't been sleeping soundly. Second, my brain hurts its too easy to buy a charm pack and working with shirt stash is more fun! Was pulling out pink red orange last night to find some good combos to see if I have enough to start the star quilt when the pattern arrives. And third, day job is getting in the way of my sewing play time.
Georgia, I lol'd at this comment! 😂 First, wow thank you that is an awesome compliment! Second, yes precuts and charm packs and jelly rolls are easy but shirt stashes are UNIQUE and personal and fun! And pink red orange star quilt sounds awesome! Third, good gracious if that's not the truth I don't know what IS! Down with day jobs and UP with sewing and quilting! 🤓😂😘
Thank you ! 🤗🇸🇪
You’re welcome! ❤️Thanks for watching (from Sweden! 🤩) and commenting!
Great job! I bought khaki pants years ago and had nothing in my closet to wear them with. When I returned them, the clerk asked me why I was returning them. I said I didn’t have anything to wear them with and she looked at me like I had lost my mind and she made some comment about everything going with khaki. I had my “colors” done way back when and I only wear clear, blue-based colors. I don’t like how my colors look with khaki/tan/beige and to this day, I don’t own khaki pants!
Thank you, Linda! And this story and comment made me laugh....I GET THAT!!! 😂🤓❤️
I buy black or grey pants for this reason. You just can't put any old thing with khakis! Not to mention every pair of khaki pants you pick up with actually be A DIFFERENT COLOR.
@@stefflcus agree 100%!
Nice explanation, but still hard to get my eye to adjust to matching up some varieties !! I think sometimes I have some gypsy blood in there, that takes over and goes wild.
It does take some practice to “train” your eyes to see color a certain way! At the end of the day, you just put together the colors you love in the quilt you imagine! 👍🏻
I'm a kindred spirit, in that I use empty Talenti containers for everything, and I quilt with thrifted shirts & linens. So, please accept this constructive correction. If you have two children, one is older, not oldest;and the other is younger, not youngest. I'm picky about grammar. It just grates every time you describe your daughters incorrectly. And for what it's worth, I listen to you on 1.5 speed because the digressions take up too much time. I do love your channel and watch them over & over.
Controversial hot take: Most pinks are cool.
Agree! Although I have quite a few in my stash that are way more orange than they appear at first blush (
I’m so discouraged 😢. I absolutely cannot see all these nuances of color that you describe.
Don’t be discouraged! It takes time and practice to develop an eye for color! You know I’ll keep talking about it on my channel…so you’ll get lots of practice here! 👍🏻🤓😘
