I feel like this is going to be your classic video.
The auto tune… the captions… the bloopers reel!!!!
Totally worth staying up until midnight.
PS I cared very much about seeing that stain and said PSSSSHHH right along with you.
Lol! Jennifer…I can hear you going “psshhh” with me! So glad you felt it was worth staying up…it was a fun one to make! (Accidentally of course, which are the best kind!)
Hi Cathy, you're becoming an enabler in my little home. I went and purchased the Quilty Stars pattern after first seeing your version. Then I found all of the free quilt patterns on the Robert Kaufman website and let me tell you there is A LOT! So thank you for sharing ❤️ we all love a freebie, right?
I have some pretty blue and white cottons for my own quilty stars but I'm on a promise not to start until I finish sewing a few little things for my granddaughters that I have already cut out. I know if I get out my quilt fabrics the other little things will get pushed to the side because it will be far too exciting to plan a new quilt for my bed, and then the handmade things for my granddaughters won't fit them!
Oh I’m a bad influence, for sure!😂 I’m proud of you for committing to finishing your projects for your granddaughters…you will enjoy working on your quilting so much more when you’re free to consider it fully without any others projects pulling on your thoughts! ❤
@@TheCatBirdQuilts Just to be clear, I don't mind you being such a terrible influence at all ❤️😂 and as much as I don't like to admit it, I know I would become smitten with such a pretty project!
Ditto 😂
Your blocks are so pretty and I do love your gingham quilt top! Funny! I just watched Jenny Doan tonight from Missouri Star redoing one of her videos from years ago…the Irish Chain! The quilts are very different, but so interesting. It was quite a task to pick out your quilting stitches! That was very nice of your husband! He must be very patient! I think you and I both have “keepers”! Thanks, Cathy! Until next time!
Thank you, Sherry and yes I have a keeper! So glad you do too! 😘
How funny about Jenny Doan and her Irish chain quilt…I’ll have to check it out! 🤓👍🏻
Aaaahhhhhh, the engraved Seam Reaper is THE BEST! That and the fact he's willing to use it on your behalf.
This is just like chatting with a friend about all the projects we're "working on" and getting to oooh and ahhh over the fabrics... including the laughter! "Cactus Man, Cactus Man"... I may/may not (totally was) singing along.
He is absolutely the best...for getting the seam reaper and then using it! I'm not sure everyone will get the "Cactus Man, Cactus Man" reference, but those that do REALLY GET IT. ❤️
Your husband is an absolute hero. I couldn't trust my husband with a job like that. He has engineer's hands, very large and usually mucky, I'd have no quilt left at the end
Lynn, he is!!❤ You might not have a quilt left, but having an engineer in the family is a gift too! 😊
You’re going to love your gingham quilt after it’s more densely quilted overall. I can’t wait to see it finished!
I also removed the quilting from one of my first log cabin quilts. I’d used batting that was far too puffy for my taste now. I’d completed over half of the hand quilting and was stuck because I wasn’t happy with the overall appearance. I picked out all of the quilting and machine quilted it instead, and it’s absolutely wonderful now. I can become paralyzed by dissatisfaction or disappointment in something I’ve invested a great deal of time or money into. I’m the end I’m so glad I experienced the satisfaction of biting the bullet and re-quilting the project.
Love how the scrappy star quilt is turning out too. Enjoyed the episode very much.
And bravo to your husband for helping you by taking out all of the quilting for you. What a sweet man! ❤️
So glad to hear someone else paralyzed by dissatisfaction…and a testimony to pulling out the quilting! Thanks for that!❤ So glad you enjoyed this video-it was a fun one to make! And yes, my husband is THE BEST.🥰❤️
It just speaks to me so much that you say you have fabrics on all your flat surfaces, it's so nice to find another kindred spirit 😁 Thank you both for another fun video!
Girl, you know it! These folks with really neat sewing spaces....HOW?!? Wherever I go is where I sit projects down! 😂
Ditto! Though it's my knitting that's scattered about next to spots where I sit or rest. My dining table is where my sewing machine and sewing projects reside. My bookcases house not only books, but also yarn, fabric, threads, notions, patterns and my button collection.
@@kimbetts4282 same!!
Your laughter is contagious! I am trying to watch all of your videos in order. That’s not working and I’ve learned that really doesn’t matter because I learn something new with each video. Thank you and your “editor “ for the laughter 😂
You’re welcome, Deborah! I’m glad you’re liking the videos and I’m glad I make you laugh! ❤️
I really look forward to your videos. They are so enjoyable. I live in a pretty rural area and don’t have anyone to talk fabric, color, piecing, or quilting with. You can’t hear me, but I am answering you back (lol). I think you should do a quilt retreat. I would certainly attend! AND… I need to give your husband kudos. He is amazing to pick that whole quilt for you!!!! What a good husband.
Tracy, he is THE BEST. I was just telling him today how much personal growth (in me) is due to his presence in my life. It's true, I can't actually hear you answering, but I FEEL YOU. And next time I ask one of those questions on camera, I'll think of you answering back! ❤️🥰 I don't even know HOW to do a quilt retreat, having never been on one, but that's sounds like it would be super fun?! Quilting? yes. Retreating? YES. I'll start thinking about it. 😘
Hi Cathy! What a great MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is THE BEST. Seriously. Just the yin to my yang. ❤️
You just make me smile. You're so happy and joyful about quilting it is contagious.
Aww, thank you so much! 🥰❤️
Love that gingham quilt. Thanks for letting us in your seeing room. You will love that quilt when it's done.
I really hope so! And thank you!! 🥰❤️
Me and the mouse in my pocket….love the giggles…Thanks for sharing the joy ❤
Aww, thanks!
Hi Cathy! I loved the blue/red floral shirt with the other fabrics that you picked out including the navy/white floral. That would be a stunning addition to your navy quilt! The bloopers were hilarious!
Aww! Thank you so much! ❤️
I love the plaids and stripes on the diagonal in that star block👌🏻🥰 Also love the next color way for your nine patch!! 💙💚
Aww! Thanks, Charity! ❤ I’m ready to get back to sewing on that 9-patch!!!
Cactus Man shirt is amazing. Almost reminds me of a Liberty Print. It will be beautiful when you piece it!
💕 Love the gingham Could SO see that on my quilt bucket list.
You and that producer!!!! couple of crazy kids!
Right?! We just got tickled and couldn't get it back together! 😂

Don't feel bad about your UFO. I have a project that has been in time out for almost 10 years. I ran into difficulties understanding the pattern. I have a friend who periodically asks about it. It may well be that my skills over those 10 years have grown enough so I could probably make it work. You may have inspired me to dig it out. Thank you, Cathy. BTW, I really like your fabrics the most out of all the quilting UA-camrs I follow.
Aww, thank you, Beth! 🥰❤️ Your story makes me feel better about my UFO! But I'm hopeful for you that you will get yours out and do something with it....can you imagine how great it will feel to have it done?!
Loved this video - always look forward to getting up on a Friday morning, that weekend feeling anyway, then a nice mug of tea, hot buttered toast and a CatBird video - bliss! Don't even mind going to work them - thank you Cathy 💕💕
Aww, Sue! 🥰What a great thing to say!❤
Cathy the blooper queen 🤣🥰 Love the shirts you found!
Right?!? I love those 2 floral shirts…so much! ❤
Thanks and I hope you laughed at our bloopers, Kylie!
@@TheCatBirdQuilts Sure did 😆😆
Hi Cathy, You are so inspirational!!! You just gave me the idea to make 'negative' templates of squares and triangles! I used card-stock paper. For a 6 inch neg-temp I first cut a piece of paper stock 10 square, then cut out of the exact middle, a 6 inch hole, leaving a 2 inch boarder all around the edge. I just made all the sizes of ie 1", 2", 3" etc - all the way up to 6". Now when I want to 'fussy-cut' fabric, I can lay my neg-temps on the fabric and see at a glance exactly where I want to mark it and cut! Just love watching your videos!
Thank you, Angela! ❤️ So glad you were inspired---and what a great idea that is to make a template for fussy cutting!
Kathy, I have a quilting stitch design I call, "A Dr. Seuss design" I do my own free-motion quilting. So it isn't a computerized pattern.
I also have that same pineapple shirt - I hesitated to purchase it but once I brought it home I'm glad I did. Cactus Man 🤣 is also designed by Ricky Singh - love his designs. I am LOVING your blue, yellow, white block.... it really speaks to me. What a great team you and Paul are - and the laughter at the end - priceless. ❤
Mary Beth, I can't believe you have that same shirt! So fun!! (yes I died at "Cactus Man" lol!) I am loving those navy blocks as well...I don't know what it is about it but it speaks to me too! And thank you---we so enjoy doing the videos together!
I’m going to insist that my husband watch! There’s so much valuable info here 😘
Lol! Well let me know how that goes! ❤️
Hi Cathy, I love your videos and am glad you like the shirt. My name is Lucila and go by Lucy 😂 some people don’t know how to pronounce Lucila 😂. Have a great weekend and Happy Valentines Day!
Awww, thank you, Lucy! There is hardly a better gift to me than a LINEN shirt!
@@TheCatBirdQuilts you’re welcome!
You find the most amazing shirts! My finds are so boring... lots of blues, but have found very nice details. I need to venture out of my area. Love the quilty star!
In my experience, only way to get those interesting ones is to go to the places where interesting shirts are WORN!😂 So yes, it might be time to go exploring! ❤️
So beautiful and so much fun !😜
Your husband is a hero,I can say !😍
He is!! And thank you! ❤
Bloopers are the best! Love to hear your husband laughing.
Aww, thanks Caitlin! Me too...he has the best laugh! I try to crack him up every time we record a video--this time I succeeded!
I always look forward to your new videos! How fun you and the Editor are - love the bloopers! :)
Thank you, Julie Anne! We have a good time together...this time especially! 😂
Thank you very much.
You're welcome! ❤️
I am dying to know what you are going to do with all the wonderful labels from the shirts?
I love your enthusiasm for unusual fabrics. Keep it coming!
I have NO idea! I guess we'll just have to wait and see! Thank you!! ❤️
I have an idea for the labels. They could become appliques. Either on a square center. Or, you could sandwich 3 layers and do the quilting by sewing the labels on. Or, if they would fray, can sew say 2 1/2 inch strips to them and cut the block down. Would you want to use interfacing to keep them from shredding? Maybe they go on a smaller project like a dirty bag for your husband! Fun.
@@carolg.6838 great ideas! Thank you for the suggestions! 🤓👍🏻
omg! It is a circus tent!!
Hi first time I've come across you. Enjoyed watching . Will watch you again. I live in England
Hi Ange! So glad you found me! ❤️ Thank you for watching and go commenting-and for the record, my UK viewers are some of my very favorites here. 🥰
Ok the outtakes in the end 🤣🤣🤣👌🏻
RIght?! We got tickled and couldn't get it back together! 😂
I snuck another bag of shirts and skirts into the house yesterday. You may want to check skirts along with the pants section for linen at thrift stores. I found 2 long linen skirts in good background colors marked down to $2.50 each!
The biggest problem I am having with taking the shirts apart is my cat. He finds the combination of freshly laundered shirts and doing sewing things the prefect time to curl up in my lap and play in the cloth on my lap.
@Garden Cats . I love it when my cats help me. They all have a bed in my sewing room. But doesn't stop them from setting on my sewing machine. 🐾❤😀
I do look for skirts, too...sometimes I stumble on a fun one and feel like I've hit the lottery! As for your cat, can you blame them?!?
I have a sister who makes several quilts each year. She uses new flat sheets for the backs. Just buy a size a little larger than you think you will need. For example, for a queen quilt she buys a King flat. She pulls the backing around to the front and uses it for the binding.
Also, I have watched so many of your videos in the last 4 months. I just pieced a Hawaiian quilt made from Men's Hawaiian shirts. And I have 70-80 more shirts, cut up and folded and put in boxes like you did. I hope to make 3 more quilts this year for Christmas.
I buy sheets for backings at the thrift store
That's a lot of shirts lol
Oh I bet your Hawaiian shirt quilt is so interesting and pretty! I do love the thrifted sheets for backing, too. 👍🏻🤓
You should create a t shirt that says “ me and the mouse in my pocket”. :)
I should!! 😂🤓❤️
You and your producer hubby are having way too much fun making this video….I’m surprised you made it to production!!❤
Tami, I know! 😂 It took us forever to stop laughing…and then every new part of the video I would lose it again! 😂 So much fun tho!❤
Actually in your next blue block that blue with the red that reads pink goes very well with the crazy busy cactus man fabric. At least it does on my iPad screen. Great video again!!! Thanks for bringing us along on your quilting journey.
That was my thought too...I guess we'll see next time, won't we?! 😉🤓 And thank you! This was a super fun one to make! ❤️
You have so many WIPs 🤣🤣🤣 They are all going to be gorgeous 🤩 I can’t wait to see them all finished 😊😊 And you’ve found some amazing shirts recently 🤩 Life is good 😊 Happy sewing 👏👏🇬🇧
Life IS good. What a good reminder...and my word, yes! Too many WIPS's for my liking these days, but oh well. It is what it IS! ❤️
Cathy - I really love that scrappy star block - it’s really striking. I may have to go find that pattern! Thanks for sharing again today.
Thank you, Peg! You definitely should get the pattern---it's a great one!
I'm remembering your cute green frogs and wonder if you've thought about adding red to a blue and white fabric or blue to a red and white fabric to round out the red, blue and white.🐸❤
I HAVE thought about it, and I've been VERY tempted!! But I'm really trying to do "all shirts" (with no tampering! lol) and so I've held off for now. But no promises! 😘
I was so excited to see another video. My preference is hand quilting. Keep them coming.
Thanks, Apache! ❤
Came for the fabric, stayed for the Cactus Man theme!
I found a shirt and thought of you - it was navy with a tiny white bubble-ish print, with a yoke of the same print on a bright teal. But it was $16.99 at Goodwill (!) so neither of us got it. 😢
But! The next trip, I needed some bright yellow fabric and a small pot for fabric dyeing. I found the perfect like-new pot and an unopened Joann’s remnant of Kona “Corn”!!!!! Shoulda bought a lottery ticket that day.
I hit the jackpot at Goodwill $2 Tuesday a couple of weeks ago- a pile of 4XLT shirts for $10. Woohoo 😂
Woohoo!! Good for you!!
I’m completely inspired to start thrifting shirts! I’m going to start in my husband’s closet!😍😍😍
Get ready--it's addictive! (because it's inexpensive and so fun!)
@melissamalone6224 that is exactly where I started - the hubs closet!!! Great way to get rid of those shirts that are too small, or stained, or not even usable for casual wear. Mine husband is retired now so we are going to have another purge.
@@christinahall3318 My husband has lost weight so I have soooo many to choose from! I think it will be nice to remember him wearing them! 🥰
Great video! Love your projects! ❤
Thank you, Annette!❤
Really enjoyed this video and your thought process.
Thank you, Debbie! 🥰
😮. I have to look for that. ❤
Thank you
You're so welcome!!
Hi Cathy! Great video. You are always so fun to watch. I love those flowery men's shirts. And Cactus Man. The blooper reel was a blast. Wish my husband was interested in my quilting... but I don't think he'll ever be picking stitches out for me! I'll still love him anyway. LOL! 😁❤
Thank you so much, Robin! My longtime viewers/friends love the bloopers!🥰 My husband is SO about helping me get to the quilting/sewing/videos that I want to make...and that is a gift! ❤️
❤
Love the circles with the name of color. I got that in a scrap box from one of the companies. My granddaughter made a pencil case out of it. Turned out great.
I do too! It makes me surprisingly happy!
I love your gingham quilt and completely understand getting stuck. I am taking a year old Sparrow quilt top to the long armer this AM. Having it folded on the handrail by my sewing room calling to me (nagging at me) finally moved me to move it onto someone else’s plate!!!! XO
Good for you! And when you get it back you will be even more relieved and happy!
The pen and paper sparrow pattern? I made that one!
I am slowly working on my free motion quilting skills (renting a longarm) so that once I have the right space for a longarm, I can do my own custom quilting! My husband does not understand how piecing quilt tops and quilting them are two different hobbies. It's a frequent topic of conversation around here.
LOL! Angela, this is a huge point of lack of understanding for non-quilters, I think! I know I had no appreciation (or knowledge) of the difference until I starting quilting! 🥰
I absolutely love the LARGE shirt! I found a 3X beautiful slate blue LINEN shirt at the thrift store a couple of weeks ago. After washing & drying my husband, who wears a 3X, came into the laundry room and (UNFORTUNATELY) I asked him if he liked it and of course he did and it fit! YEP I lost a very large piece of slate blue linen. O well, pressing on!
You had me at "slate blue linen!" But at least you'll still get to enjoy it...on your husband! lol!
Hubby is very good natured 🤗 love your videos!!!
He is! And thank you!!
So enjoyed this video with your many interruptions. Working on finishing a couple UFO's and then on to a couple new projects for me!
Hooray! And good for you--new projects all around!
The star block is yummy 😋
Happy Valentines Day 💝
Happy Valentine's Day to you, Giselle! And thank you...I think it is yummy too!
We must be in the same goodwill store! I found the pineapple shirt too. Didn't have the same yoke fabric but I loved the pineapples. Think mine was $5. Still a steel think it was even a XX if not a XXX. 😘
That makes 3 of us that have that shirt! So fun!
Im always a sucker for anything paisley print
Me too!!
Sometimes being consistently inconsistent works!
And I loved the blooper reel! 😘
I knew you would! Especially since you know what he looks like and can "see" him laughing! ❤️
B&W shows you the value.
I finally got there…but it took a minute! 😂
@@TheCatBirdQuilts I saw that! High fives
I was calling it out to you! Pity you couldn’t hear me!! 😉
@@andikrob I appreciate it! 😂🥰
I am wondering why you are using such a dark backing on the gingham quilt? I am concerned that it might show thru. How about a tiny floral blue on white?
Wait a minute! CatBird thinks CactusMan is a weird name??:)
😂😂😂
My suggestion:. Buy a long arm machine. You may have to buy a building to house it ....
Oh my. Perish the thought! 😱😂
❤️❤️❤️
🥰❤️😘
Cathy can I ask what do you do with all the mens dress shirts you take apart? I've been saving every button -mainly white - they're too nice to throw away. Xx
I currently have a glass jar collecting all the buttons...I keep hoping I'll get inspired to make something creative or amazing or beautiful with them, but so far, not so much! 😂
I DID reuse some walnut-colored wooden buttons on a white linen men's shirt that I turned into a sleepshirt for my sister for Christmas; I took off the collar and stitched it back together with DMC embroidery thread in a wine/maroon color and used that same thread to attach all the wooden buttons. I did the same semi-decorative stitching at the cuff and moved the buttons so the cuffs fit her wrists. But other than that (sorry, more than you asked for) they just keep collecting in the jar! 😘
8:20 just call it intentional and call it art
Lol! Love that!❤
I have something to mail, too, but can’t find an address. Can someone please post a reply with it?
Yes! And yay!!
