Homeowners Speak Out After Battery Burns Down Home

Jim and Maria lost their family home of almost 12 years after an unplugged lithium ion pool battery combusted, destroying their house.
Now, they are calling for tighter regulations on the standard of products for sale.

I was on an investigative team when they were frantically trying to figure out why these things were spontaneously combusting.
We were working with GE and the FAA.
As it turns out, one of the Chinese manufacturers (go figure) was leaving out a crucial component.
A simple bit of plastic screen.
It may not seem like much, but what happens is this plastic screen allows the electrolyte to flow back and forth between the cells.
When a failure condition begins to develop, heat is also created.
That heat melts the screen which then closes those holes and therefore prevents further exchange of the electrolyte.
It typically stops the failure.
In this instance, I suspect that the Aquatic nature of the use of the battery caused the battery case to fail and subsequently water intruded causing a short
