grate experiment that works. Hobotech can you imagine how many people threw their batteries thinking it was completely dead.
There didn't seem to have any protection circuit on the Jackery explorer I purchased from Harbor Freight. It started smoking when I hooked the Jackery to put some extra juice in the vehicle battery when the alternator failed and the engine needed to do some traveling to get to the next AutoZone store. The battery in my 94 GMC C3500 was down to 11.4 volts when I used a Harbor Freight battery clamps from one of the solar panels with the connection for a battery directly from the small solar panel. I had another connection that went to the 12 volt outlet. I put the ground on the negative side of the battery and when I connected the positive connection to the battery is when the Jackery started smoking and the 12 volt outlet died. I had the Jackery a short time and Harbor Freight replaced the unit. Didn't have any problems with the return. I also let Jackery know what happened. They were also very nice and timely in giving me support. I wish Jackery could have a hard wire option on the solar generators like the AC200 and the air plane 12 volt connection. I use that one for the 12 volt refrigerator/freezer.
Hi, how do I jump start a 48v lithium battery
My son just got back from a 2 day river trip and killed his lifepo4 battery after two days of using a trolling motor. I put it on the charger and nothing. I watched this video and then connected a 12v jump pack for a few seconds then connected the charger back up and BAM! Up and charging like a Boss. Thanks brother.
I left my disconnect on in the RV and both my lithium’s died. I hooked up the generator and thought they were charging. Batteries only lasted for 2minutes.
The dealership had a great tech that said they needed to be hump started. Thanks for confirming!
I’m back online ;)
Thanks for making my day! I know I can always count on you to help with stuff like this!
Very valuable info - thank you for sharing!!
Excellent pro tips. Very useful. Thanks for sharing
I NEVER comment on UA-cam videos, but I just wanted to send a giant THANK YOU for all that you do! I've learned so much over the years (and helped reduce my bank account balance) and it is absolutely appreciated. Keep up the fantastic work!! 😀
That was an amazing important video! I have not seen that covered anywhere else! But I bet it will be soon! Thanx!
Great video! Not only did you give a lot of options to bring the battery back, but you also showed how to do each one!
Thank you HT! You rock. I learned something today! Thanks again!
Very useful tutorial! Great idea for a video
Thanks man! Literaly just used jumper cables off my vehicle starter battery and it worked! You're a life saver!
Great , easy to understand video .
Great demo!
Thank you for the information😊
Professor, welcome back from your desert vacation, enjoyed those videos. Thanks for the restart with a test light. Had not thought of that technique.
excellent, Hobo!
Hello Professor
Good video. Thank you for the tip.
Thanks. Looks easy.
100% helped! Thx a ton!
Thank you so much, you gave me the confidence to jump start my van’s lithium battery and helped me restore my power! 👍🏼
Thank you Professor once again for another great tip, it worked for me with no problems
Victron battery chargers charge a dead LiFePo battery. Problem solved.
Some battery chargers with a lithium setting only provide the LiFePo charge profile, and not the “jump start.”
The BMS is a computer, and thus requires electricity.
Great informational video.
Great video Tom!
Thanks for showing all these options. I was away from home and had to scrounge a way to do this to my ‘house’ battery in our van camper, using items scrounged from my son in law’s garage. He had one of those ‘dumb’ circuit testers with the light and alligator clip, and I had a separate small 12v 5aH battery. Made it work by tickling a wired-on 12v outlet while the solar panels were hooked up and ready to charge via a different connection. Bravo! Saved my bacon.
Good to know, thanks professor!
Wow. This trick really work, it help me to fix my studio flash light's battery. Thanks!!
It's works ! Thanks a lot!!!
Thank You for the info...
Super useful video, I'm sure this will save a lot of headaches for people
Very good explanations tks
Great video. Was thinking of getting a lifepo4 for my eb3a to up the capacity. Wasn’t aware of needing to jump start if it goes dead. Good to know so I’ll be prepared. Thx.
Wow you just saved me couple of hundreds . Thank you.
Great video, thank you.
in one case I had to break open the sealed case, disconnect the BMS and connect the battery charger directly to the battery bus bars. Once it reached 12V, I reconnected it all up again and the battery continued to charge to 14.4 V.
I then re-sealed the case.
i might try this. as mine wont charge
Thank you very much! You have saved me money today! Thank you sir!
You sir saved me. Thank you for this.
Hi Prof Hobo, thanks for your input, great video - well appreciated 👍 Through all the videos and information on internet, we get a lot of education 😉. Cheers
Thx. Very useful info.
Excellent video
Welcome back, Professor!
Now I know what too do . Thanks Mon
Thanks!
You absolute legend! I thought I was up for a new battery after dusting off 3x life po4 batteries, which had spent 4 years doing sweet fa. 2/3 came to life charging but the last was spitting an error on the battery charger. Used the jump trick here... 3/3 straight back to life and charging up. Much appreciated good sir.
First time viewer here. Great info and very well explained, but that outro had me in stiches and earned you a sub! looking forward to more great content.
Awesome dude I'll be using this I bet ! Earned a sub and I liked the simple explanations thank you
Dude, how cool are you .. thank you, great tutorial. Thanks again.
Thanks, good to know !
Thanks for posting this video! It was very useful!! Subscribing to you.
👍 Cool, a life saver. Thank you!
Just tried this with a dead lithium motorcycle battery and it worked! Thanks, you're a lifesaver. I used the stripped ends of a 12v wifi power cable I no longer needed!
This worked swimmingly lol thanks 👍
Great educational video. 🙂👍
Great video. Good to know !
Thanks for the info you have probably saved me $$$
Love your videos!
Yes, I learned something. Options. I like options. And I liked this video. Thanks.
Great vid!!!
For anyone with a 24V system...
I connected (2) 12V AGM batteries in series to jump MY 24V system that was showing me 2.5V. Ran jumper cables with one positive clamped onto a resistor as shown in the video. No sparks and it took about 20 seconds for the inverter/charger to light up and begin charging.
Thank you for this video, it was s great help.
Thank you!
Thanks for this video, I had a strong suspicion that my bluetti wasn't really dead dead but just needed a little jump start. Saved me a lot of money!
I was wondering where you have been. Great information video for sure. I see you brought out the infamous clamps again remembering the last time hehehe. Have a great week. God bless.
I have all of this stuff except for the Jackery. But since I didn't know about these, I used a 100-watt 18-19v solar panel and connected it directly to the LPO4 battery and it immediately took it over 10v even though it was cloudy day. But HAD I KNOWN I would've used the handy little jump starter. So much easier than moving the battery around. So thank you so much.
Thanks Tom ! TAKE CARE..
Thanks! Your rock
Thanks Professor as a woman that loves tinkering you just saved me . I am trying to teach women basic if your in a situation what would you do. Some will be stranded . Others of like minded learning will love this. I've missed you sorry haven't been on much. Have to go over to computer to channel. But you a coffee. Have a great day. Thank you. Wish you were closer.
Thanks, HT.
It worked for me. ,,I used the NOCO GENIUS10, 10A Smart Car Battery Charger, 6V and 12V Automotive Charger. Ty.
I used the 2nd technique to jump my BMS. Big thanks, legend 🙏
Excellent video, as usual. It's worth pointing out that the battery voltage never was zero. The cells inside, usually in a 4S configuration, were simply down to whatever voltage (often 2.5v each) that the BMS is configured to shut off at. The battery cells were at 10v but the BMS turns everything off to avoid discharging the cells too low, which will damage them. All it takes is a small amount of forced current to bring the voltage above that threshold, waking up the BMS and enabling the charging mosfets to feed current into the cells. I learned this lesson with a portable power station that "died"...2 mins plugged into the automotive accessory charger in my car woke up the BMS and charged the cells enough that the AC wall charger could do its thing.
Ah... so the BMS disconnects it. Thanks for the extra info.
And thanks for the video HT!
Hi, I have a 48 Volt 10 AMP battery that will charge for around 5 minutes then when I use the electric bike it will die very very quickly within 15 seconds how do I revive that battery. It does have a built in headlight and that's the only way that I can think of to discharge it. Or should I get another 48 Volt good battery and just go positive to positive negative to negative any help would be appreciated thank you Andrew
There's a wide selection of solar chargers that will 'wake up' a lithium battery where the BMS has gone into low voltage protection. It's not something a lot of people consider when buying, but at the top shelf end of things Victron will do it and at the mid range tier Renogy branded chargers will if configured appropriately.
I'm glad to see you're still there I killed a Jackie when the new ones and it's smoked and it'said it back to company haven't got it back yet Gosh me about 1500 but oh
I was just thinking about you earlier today. It’s been a minute.
I have a cheapo 60v 5a charger that I use to jump my LiFePO batteries when needed. I use wall power but have also used my EcoFlow River Pro to power the charger. Most chargers need the source of input voltage to be ~5v about that of the deleted battery. I needed the 60v charger to get my LiFePO going. Works like a charm.
I also make multitude of connectors for many scenarios. M4 connector to Anderson PP (APP), APP to cigarette lighter, etc. I use my chargers with ring connectors and M4 connectors to charge through my DIY solar generator setup using its solar input connection.
Thank you so much for this Vid. I was thinking that my camp battery was stuffed. And now its back to full health. Thank you Thank you Thank you :)
Thank you. 👍🐝🌞
To be 100% correct it's not the battery it's the BMS that cuts off the battery. The battery is just as it's lowest voltage/current per cell...
Yes , I wish he would correctly teach what is really going on in a lifepo4 BMS (battery Manage System) . The cells will be damaged if the voltage gets to below 10 or so volts in a 12 volt battery..The BMS shuts the battery off. So the batterie reads Zero… but in reality,, it is at its BMS protection shut off voltage. About 10 volts n a 12 volt system. You are actually Resetting the BMS circuit. Now you must charge the battery. If you discharge it below 10 volts. You have damage your battery.. Thous ,the reason for the BMS..to OPEN the battery circuit. You read 0 volts
Very good to know! But my question is...connected to a controller that's supposed to shut it down when the voltage gets to 10.7, why doesn't the controller shut it down first? Or do we even know whether it was the controller or the BMS that shut it down? All I know is the battery read less than 1 volt when tested with a multimeter. I've been scratching my head over why the controller didn't shut it down at 10.7v....
@@Goody2shzToothe controllers were designed before lithium came out?
"Kick Start the Heart". Thanks for the video!
thank you so much. I didn't realize I could you a booster pack to wake it up! life saver
Hey, try cleaning the bottom of the board.Where the solar joints melt melt togethereally appreciate your video
Thank you, I had 3 dead lipo4. Charger would not detect. Used a lead acid full battery and wualla! Charging. Thank you so much.
I have been jump starting batteries like this for sometime. When I am out in the field and have a singular 18650 battery that dies I put the dead battery into a flashlight first followed by a good 18650 battery and turn on the flashlight a minute, it works every time. Of course I recommend having a flashlight that takes 2 18650 batteries they last a long time.
Hello, this was a great video. I am curious if I can safely try this in my situation. I just bought a campervan conversion (that had been sitting for 2 years not used) and charging the 300ah lithium battery via shore power or dc chargers (through the alternator) quickly drains. The van came with a bms in the form of a monitor screen that will not get power. My thought is that the bms is in a safety mode and the battery might need to be jump started. I don't want to ruin any electronics or start a fire. Any tips on steps to take or things to check before trying to jump start?
Thank you! Superhelpful. Could I use a noco boost gb70 to do this jumpstart? This a one battery simple solar setup. Does the jumpstart charging impact the solar controller and inverter or are they ok during this process? Thanks!
I have a 12-volt lifepo4 I used in my Fiat 500e, super underpowered, car died on freeway after about a month. It's small enough and safe to carry around as a backup battery, that would allow me to get my keys out of the car and lock it & easily get me to a battery shop.
P.S. We love you channel HOBOTECH !!!!!
P.P.S. We bought many power stations because of your reviews :)
THANK YOU AGAIN !!!!!
You jump starter old power station with new power station, haha
@@cooflypower Power stations are designed to power up when they have all of their power depleted.
He jump started a battery's BMS with a power station, which then allowed it to be charged like a power station. If the power drops to zero there's no power to turn on the BMS so ithe battery can be charged.
@@jimdoozy Professional explanation.
Tried this on my Dakota lithium battery... It's reading 0.7 volts. Jumped it and it's still not charging. What gives?
You are the man! I thought I messed up my brand new lithium, batteries, and charger for my golf cart. Just fix them in less than five minutes if they are run in series, just jump each individual battery off my charger instantly kick back on.
The wall adapter method works great. It doesn't even have to be a battery charger or battery or whatever. Two clip leads and a little pokery-jiggery and you are done.
Nearly all wall adapters for the misc devices you might have lying around the home are either 5VDC or 12VDC. And all such adapters are current limited (usually from between 300mA to 2A or so), short circuit protected, and typically 'hicup' on a short (retry every few seconds continuously).
So just find an appropriate wall adapter lying around in the house, read the label to make sure the output voltage is reasonable, and you can connect it directly to the battery without any resistors or anything else to jump start it. If you happen to have a little 300mA current limited wall adapter, It is literally impossible to damage anything.
(The voltage varies a bit on these wall adapters, so use a multi-meter to check that its reasonable even if the label says 12V. But hey if the battery is dead and below 10V, then any "12VDC" wall adapter will do the job).
Thanks for this informative video!
If I were using a 30V / 10A bench power supply to jump start my 15.2V/4480mAh LiPo battery. Is there a specific current setting that I should use?
I've been told sending it 24V will jump it but not sure if a specific constant current is recommended
Wtf !!!! I cannot believe it!!! Dead12 v lifepo battery that I use for fishing reels back to life !!! I used a Schumacher instant power jump starter. Remember to leave the charger together with the jump starter to work. Thank you !!!!!
Awesome video. I can just hear the head slaps from folks who threw away their very expensive batteries because they didn't know they could save them. 🤦♀ Doh! I didn't know. Now I do. Thank you very much!
Great stuff. Question........I have lithium batteries in my boat and I also bought a noco boost plus GB40 lithium jump starter. In the directions it specifically says not to use it on lithium batteries. Can you clarify this for me? If I understood your video correctly it will work. Thanks a lot for your hard work.
For the Jackery method, would it be better to attach the cables with the Jackery off, and then once connected, simply turn on the Jackery dc output?
Worked great for Braille Green Lite LiFePo4 battery showing ~3v. LFP chargers wouldn't wake it, but touching the terminals briefly with a lead acid traditional jump box woke it up. DMM jumped to 11v and battery proceeded to charge.
Yo hobo, my Holiday Rambler has a built-in relay system that combines the house and chassis batteries to act as a emergency jump starter. Can a smart battery support a starting motor?
Thanks, now I've got that song stuck in my head 😎
Any tips on doing this with Ni-MH batteries - specifically dead AA rechargeables?? The charger that I normally use refuses to charge them. They sat depleted for a while.
Quick question I have a battery that’s less than a month old that this happened to me with. I was able to use your trick to jump it should I return the battery? Do you think its potential has been damaged?
Many thanks for this helpful video.. i have braille g20 lithium ion battery 2 month old only, i left the car for 45days, trying to start it but the battery looks dead, checked it 0.16V, i have lithium jump starter, before i jump start it I contacted Braille technical services, they said "You will immediately kill a lithium battery if you jump start it from another battery", so I was very confused, i watched that video and i take the risk 🥲, the car is running now for 4 hours then switched off and on .. looks great, i really don't know if i damage it or not😂😢, but i think this professor he knows what he is doing ❤
What should I use for a 72v 50amp battery?
