I operated a 631D in 1988 in Western Australia that could pull 45mph unloaded on a long flat haul and a 633D that could pull 42mph fully loaded - while sheeting the Mt Newman to Port Headland road. Both had direct injection engines. I once walked a D9L 25km to un-bog the 633 when it got stuck good and hard in the mud, then walked it 25km back… turning it around every half a mile so not to wear down the drive train. Ahhh… fun memories. Now I work in an office… sigh…
Yes, it's ONE OF the fastest scrapers in existence...However, the CAT 660 three-axle scrapers (in their heyday) have attained speeds up to 48 MPH with a full load in top gear on level ground or downhill, according to contractors who have used the CAT 660 and 666 scrapers in their projects....
I have loved tractors and heavy equipment since being a toddler. I would really want to see the tractor part of this scraper pulling at a tractor pull, in the highest weight class. This one sure sounded good, even after over 50 years of hard labor.
I used to operate those in the early sixties. That is a DW 20 5 speed main and a 2 speed spliter. The only problem is they left the factory without good brakes. They way we slowed down was we always had the bowl very low and if we need to stop fast just hit the bowl down and let it drag on the ground. Yes they were very rough if they didn't keep the haul road bladed.
You guys never cease ti bring a smile to my face. Did flat top have a permit to run that thing down a sate highway? I sure do miss south central Texas. Hard scrabble though. Damn hard, and damn hot.
Yes, some of the earlier equipment had some tall gearing. But stopping power was the issue. The DoT required better brakes as time went on so now most equipment falls in the "Slow Moving Vehicle" category. I remember old graders that could hit highway speeds!.
That was crazy sounding pony motor at the start. Thats what that noise was right? What year is that DW20? Awesome vid!! 5/5. If I saw that going down the road it would make my day!
I used to play in these as a kid, and my dad at one time drove from Fresno to Bakersfield in his DW20 along with the rest of the fleet, down hwy 99 in California. Some had seats, but none had brakes, so a tire was mounted below the can in case of emergency. And Yeah, they had a reputation of hauling ass.
Michigan 115 ,driving site to site anything over 15 mph and you'd be thrown out of the seat. The bounce got so pronounced daylight could be seen under the tires
Man, I almost got a woody watching that. I learned on a Cat D6 years ago. It was an older machine from the 50's with the pony engine to get it going. You should have heard that thing start on a cold day with starting ether. I loved it, but it only paid $4.00 an hour and had to move on with my real love, music.
DW20 are the toughest scrapers every made. I have 20,000 hours in the seat and pushed them for 30+years . If you kick them out of gear on a safe down hill you can get them over 50 mph easy. 20s will get a hopping on you if the tires are un matched. So watch it and stay safe. I still run them in my sleep.
I have a steering gear box turn loose on me plowing one time. My eyes opened as I had just driven my tractor on the highway to get water/antifreeze out in drive tires. Had that steering box broke the in 8th gear it could have been bad for me......
That baby was cooking! But can it pull a wheelie? I admire individuals with DIY fix-'em-up mechanical skills. Keep that 'gas sucking bitch pig' running! Thank you.
It's fast but not quite the fastest. According to many publications, the fastest scrapers ever were the Caterpillar 660 3-axle scrapers of the 1960's-'70's...The 660's had a maximum speed of 42 MPH fully loaded on level ground and as fast as 60 (YES, 60!) MPH empty going downhill!
What you're hearing at the start isn't the diesel engine, it's the little pony motor that starts the diesel. They're designed to do exactly what he did. The diesel never revved until he starts to pull away.
hypnolobster Yes your right I can't believe I didn't notice that that was the pony I must have skipped thru the video to when the diesel kicked in and didn't notice
40 is that all your DW20 will do thats a slow one,l drove in a fleet of them in the 70s and 80s a lot of them had another 20 mph on 40 stevensons and sons Otahuhu New Zealand,no gloves to change those 2 crash boxes either.

You earn more in the office ?
Moo01100 it’s more wear turning a dozer around then going straight pal

The pony motor was having trouble starting so I was spraying ether in the air intake making it sound like that. The year model is between 1955-59.
Caterpillar should make cars! They'd be the longest lasting cars on the road!
I have loved tractors and heavy equipment since being a toddler. I would really want to see the tractor part of this scraper pulling at a tractor pull, in the highest weight class. This one sure sounded good, even after over 50 years of hard labor.
what a great video, thanks, not seen one of these since the 70's & my the sound comes right back to me when i was in my teens,

Caterpillar really knows how to make construction equipment
You guys never cease ti bring a smile to my face. Did flat top have a permit to run that thing down a sate highway? I sure do miss south central Texas. Hard scrabble though. Damn hard, and damn hot.
I bet 40mph on a half century old scraper is a pretty terrifying experience lol
Man I'd love to see you drop the bowl on that road...
man i had to sub to you....i love this old machines !!!!
Hey, without that thingyon the back it would make a really nice tractor!
Thats scary, there is no reason for road gear to make tht thing go so fast. You have some balls of steel
My dad had a 67 D8 Cat crawler with a pony starter. Nice memories.
should have scraped up that road-kill while you were at it.
Talking about the trailer...is the left tire worn out while the right one is new?
What an awesome machine!
MAN SLOW DOWN.. You are about to hit 88 MPH and go back in time to the future..
Marty...if my calculations are correct-when this scraper hits 88 miles per hour...you're gonna see some serious shit
Its going to create a BLACK HOLE, Going back and forward in time at the same time : |
@DieselPowerTV Was this filmed in the Texas Hill Country? You had to be a man to be an operator
in those days.
Yes, some of the earlier equipment had some tall gearing.
But stopping power was the issue.
The DoT required better brakes as time went on so now most equipment falls in the "Slow Moving Vehicle" category.
I remember old graders that could hit highway speeds!.
cool old machine, I hate to see these old machines scrapped
Does the driver of this monster use the main engine for to start the starter motor?
Looked to be an old DW-20, there were thousands of them working all the time back in the day. Then it was the DW-21
I do 40 all night on the haul road, even more when going down hills.
That was crazy sounding pony motor at the start. Thats what that noise was right? What year is that DW20?
Awesome vid!! 5/5. If I saw that going down the road it would make my day!
Yeah, are you planning on restoring that little jewel?
And the commercial vehicle safety authority as well !

Great story I'm sure. I can see a line of these giants spool'n down the freeway with police escort, must of been a sight!
Michigan 115 ,driving site to site anything over 15 mph and you'd be thrown out of the seat. The bounce got so pronounced daylight could be seen under the tires
Боже мой! Какой диаметр выхлопа!!! Я влюбился с первого взгляда! Вы Доставляете в Россию?
that idle sounds amazing!
Are the wheels standing still? 3:11
What Series Cat Diesel ?
how does that pony starter thing work ?
Man, I almost got a woody watching that. I learned on a Cat D6 years ago. It was an older machine from the 50's with the pony engine to get it going. All it needs is a coat of black and you've got the new batmobile
must be a freakin beast in the snow

thats someplace around waco texas i recognize the back of that phone book lmao
What kind of turbo setup is that?
was that turbo or supercharged? It looked like turbo at at he end but I cant tell for sure
Jeffrey Fritsche Turbos!
Jeffrey Fritsche Turbos!
Turbos!
Turbos!
Would you get fined for driving it on a highway?
looking at the rear part of that scrapper looks like the batmobile
Isso é caterpillar, o melhor equipamento de terraplenagem que existe.
@KapteinOpel The thing your refering to is a scraper
hope that thing has good brakes ?
Looks like the bat mobile from behind!
i can see what this thing is doing, but what is it scraping?
it just looks so strange to see it going.... well, fast
this was built when people had pride
is it two stroke?
No all cat engines are 4 stroke
piece of true american heritage
it sounded like it was running away for warm up...
DW15 or DW20?
Is that a 2 stroke?
I have a steering gear box turn loose on me plowing one time. My eyes opened as I had just driven my tractor on the highway to get water/antifreeze out in drive tires. Had that steering box broke the in 8th gear it could have been bad for me......
Hell yeah, I'd definitely buy a Cat pickup truck
I didn't know they invented a reverse ghost tow strap. Look at the cummins push that thing. Thats what happens when tow mirrors are down
+Don C Are you dumb or a powerjoke fan boy??
+Don C Miss read sorry mam.
I see it back in the days it was fast.
Drop the blade for instant stoping power
That baby was cooking! But can it pull a wheelie? I admire individuals with DIY fix-'em-up mechanical skills. Keep that 'gas sucking bitch pig' running! Thank you.
Its a diesel
I thought I was going to see 40mph scraping
Imagine that same engine, in a lighter machine with more gears... That would work right?
Yeah, it would
Coolerthanspock1998 it would be awesome!
smallenginedude71 this might fit into chevrolet kodiak
Diesel motors blow soot, which is basically carbon, that didn't pollute as bad as the car they rode in.
seems weird to see a caterpillar nowadays that isn't diesel
nice speed on that thing!!!
thats scary fast... couldnt the 660's 666's go a little faster ive heard some as fast as 55 with the EB boxes
the old green euc tt40 would out perform a cat
so that's where the nelson racing engines are going.
these machines were built to last.
What does this puppy do? scrape? scrape what?
40 mph??????????????? awesome
That is 40Mph or 40 Kmph?
+adjie REXA mph, you can see on his speedometer
iStouts Ok thank you.
the way we were
Wow that turbo, sounds like a jet! 5/5
New they where rated at about 43-45MPH
with out the back half might have hit 50. :)
It looks like the new bat mobile.
I would hate to pull out infront of that beast!! I guess you could drop the scraper though
Thats the starting motor, the main motor is diesel
To think...that anyone would conceive a different way to build one.
Brakes....what brakes?
First ever Bat-Mobile? ... Anyone ...
Love dat SOund of dat enginzzzz !
Wish my CAT boots lasted as long as their heavy plant. Unfortunately, they (the boots) lasted as long as the tank of diesel in that scraper .....
clearly, you've never deadsticked a loaded 657.....40 miles an hour is when i put on the seatbelt....still got another 22 mph to go...
@DieselPowerTV Ahh, okay. Thanks for the info!
We had a 619C that would do 40!
suprised the dodge can keep up, lol
The back of it so reminds me of the batman car!:L
What a cheerful sound for it's age
I wouldn't give it that much gas right after startup

HoustonRailFan ™ mmmm mmmm
Miguel Cordero Dont give me that lol

1:17 awww yeah
That trip: 100 gallons of fuel.
Where's your helmet? Why's it so friggin' loud to start?
cuz its a piece of shite
Steven Luebbert how did you know that:0
Harvester's channel no thats the donkey engine to get the main engine to start. like an electric starter motor in a car when you turn the key.
If i had one of these, i'd take the scraper part off and dick around with the tractor. It's so damn cool looking.
THING FUCKIN FLYS!
...this is the least of there worries
