When you need to redrill a larger hole over a small one you can cut a disk out of plywood to the size of the smaller hole (use at least 2 layers of 18mm of hardwood plywood for thickness, don't use OSB!!), drill a center hole in the plywood disk, insert the disk in the hole in the wall and use it to center your larger sized diamond core bit. You only need it for the first 2 inches of drilling, after which you need to remove both the disk and the centering bit.

Best site on the web. Keep it going as I've learnt tons! I'd be interested in your take on the best drills on the market now for large hole core drilling as there are so many. Are dedicated core drills really better or faster? and do you have any tips on cutting holes high up (i.e. for extractor fans) as I always seem to do my back in doing it from my ladder :/ ?
If doing a soil pipe I do a 150mm cut about an inch deep first and then fit a 110mm and cut through the wall. If a need to join or fit a 90 degree turn I can chip out to the 150 mm cut to create the clearance needed and keep the pipe tight to the wall. Cementing up the gap makes for a neat finish.

Great - I have to drill a couple of 6 inch holes in my garage wall for ventilation. Will be looking to rent a proper core drill. Not sure the clutches on standard SDS+ drills are up to the job...

Probably an impossible question to answer but what's the chance of breaking out the face of the brickwork if I'm drilling from the inside-out (1500w SDS+ drill, 162mm diamond core, rotary drilling only. Can't drill outside-in because I really don't want to do it up a ladder). I note that Roger drilled a nice neat hole but what's the chance of a relative newbie doing so with much less professional gear???

I usually core 2inch and 6 inch into 4 inch concrete blocks..

TCT used to be cheaper than diamond cores but Spectrum and Mexco are now so cheap they are worth a go. The difference is that you get a smooth hole on the outside so if you are drilling from the inside out it matters.

I see the Hatton Garden robbers used a Hilti diamond core drill to get through the reinforced concrete wall. They left it behind so hopefully the tradesman they stole it from will get it back.

Great video, thank you. But what if you have a 240mm thick solid brick wall (Flemish bond) and only a 170mm deep core? Surely when you get to the end of the core you are stuck with a wad of brick that needs to be chiselled out, no?

I have 70 4 inch holes to drill thru 9inch brick wall. So any more tips for faster drilling is much appreciated as I'm only getting 4 or 5 done a day.
What happens if it's a cavity wall? I found when I went through the first layer and started on the second it would jam so frequently! to the point where it got stuck completely. Should I re-insert the pilot hole? Is it because the 2 holes are slightly misaligned?
You shouldn't have to reinsert the pilot hole. Slight misalignment could be the problem but it could also be a number of other issues. How powerful is your drill? - Ideally it should be around 1300/1400+ Watts. If the substrate you are drilling through is very damp then that can cause the core bit to continuously jam. Do you have a vacuum connected to the drill to remove the dust? Are you dry or wet core drilling? Have you hit a wall-tie?

Can i use SDS plus drill bit on a standard chuck ?
I purchased a 30mm Tungsten Carbide Hole Saw bit for making few holes in a cement plastered brick wall as part of a DIY project at home and it is a SDS plus drill bit and what i have is a pretty basic Hitachi hammer drill, so i wanted to know if this drill bit would be compatible with my drill. Also if I can use it, should a hole saw be used on hammer setting ?
Those tungsten carbide tipped hole saws are made to hammer on SDS and your percussion drill won't get the best out of it but it will do no harm. Stick it on hammer and have a go but keep pulliing it out and letting it cool down slightly because they are not made for high speeds and overheating they don't like. Some people spray them with a bit of water which helps but it makes a mess.
Also I forgot to add that I bought a complete set of ten diamond core bits up to 35mm for less than £10.00 on ebay. Straight out of China but they are brilliant. I will do a video on them soon If you run them wet they are great
Great tips there Roger. What I also tend to do is core drill almost all the way through then go through the other side so you don't have too much of a blowout on facing brick.

Do you turn the drill onto hammer when you are using a diamond.. or are you always using just the drill. I think I was told that you only need to just use the hammer for making the pilot hole then when you have done that you just use the drill option. Thanks

I need to drill a vertical blind hole in concrete to locate a pole. I have a 90mm x 480mm core drill. I would really like to go down at least 400mm. How do you extricate the concrete core? Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks, Barry.

Hi , I would keep taking the core out every ten seconds to make sure it doesn't bind up with dust because, once it does, it could be jammed in there for good.
Once you have reached the depth take the core drill out and put a rod or bar down through the pilot hole and break the core out. It needs to snap at the depth you drilled, assuming it is 400mmm deep, which is a lot for concrete.
When you are drilling walls you normally get a 100mm core out but in your case that won't happen.
I got caught out like that drilling through an engineering brick. I thought my diamond core bit was wrecked. I never knew until this day that it could be saved.
Tap the diamond segments up with a file job done

very useful. a few times a year a need to drill a 5 inch hole through engineering/concrete (new build fireplaces). its always a pain and ive often reverted to stitch drilling, which makes me feel like a muppet. im sure my drill is un powered for the job and worry that a 5inch core drill is too big/dangerous. @skill builder how big can you go, before its dangerous. i once got a quote from a firm to wet drill a 9inch core. they wanted £400....
You can drill up to 5 inch but rent a dedicated machine with enough power and a decent clutch, any larger and you really need a rig that can bolt to the wall/floor for saftey.

I have a bit of metal to cut through inside the concrete that I'm drilling. Its just a vent pipe, the metal is only very thin about a millimeter or so. My question is will the diamond core bit get through that? anyone know?
If the metal is embedded in concrete then the diamond teeth won't snag on it. The diamond will cut through the metal with no trouble. It is only when it hits a bar suddenly that it knocks a tooth off. Take it easy let the diamond do the work and you will be fine.

I drill an inch or so inside then I finish drilling outside the house, less dust inside the this way.
What about if i want to cut a new hole (because the current 110mm hole is 2 inches to the left of where it should be) just about 50mm to the side of a current hole. Is it possible to to this with a core drill ? becuase only one side of the core will be cutting into brick.
Yes but you will need a piece of plywood with a hole in it to position the core on the wall. Once it starts in the wall it will be fine
Any idea where the dust extraction kit comes from? Googling Dewalt gets me nothing.
I will try and track it down. It seems the DeWalt system is no longer there but I can't believe it has gone.

This is the same bit of kit. I don't think DeWalt made it. You can actually buy it as part of a diamond core set from Screwfix for a lot less than buying it on its own.

My diamond core is jammed in and I can't get it out. It's in at full depth of core. Any ideas?

It can only be dust that is jamming it so you should be able to suck out the dust and tap it gently to free the dust.
If the wall is wet you need to run a fan heater or something on it for a few hours to dry that dust paste out. Jamming can be a problem hence my tip about pulling it out as you go. Let us know how you get on.
I was drilling the floor bringing in a new water main, had to go under the wall of house, I took out the adaptor and drilled through threaded hole in core with long drill to reach trench under wall, then used vacuum under core to suck out dust. What a job! Thanks for as vice mate
I feel for you Peter. I have done so many of those water mains under the foundation and they are never easy. A bit from outside a bit from in and there is always the last bit you can't get at.

I made this mistake on my first every core drill. You need one that will take the collar of the bend or branch and to give yourself some wiggle room you need a 127mm bit. This allows a bit of deflection if you need to angle the pipe and elbow.

@@techguy666 I cut through the Leca in minutes with an 800w Metabo Drill with clutch. The core bit was from UK drills, really cheap. I made 4 x 160mm holes. It was overkill but luckily I sold the drill after the job for almost what I bought it for.

Try coring thru Accrington brick. East Lancashire. The casts for the bricks had the letters "IRON" imprinted on them, but they didn't reverse the lettering. So, when they came outa the kilns, they had "NORI" imprinted. All the same, I have never encountered bricks so impenetrable and hard as these.
Top tip re exposing newer diamonds. Those cores aint cheap!

I know the Acrrington Nori very well and use it sometimes for the diamond blade tests in Professional Builder Magazine It is class A engineering brick like Staffordshire blues and looks great in a dpc.
I knew it spelt Iron but I hadn't heard the story about the casts. It would be mirror writing.so maybe the bloke who laid them in was having a bad day.
