One of the best songwriters/singers of my generation. So many have had hits with his songs and it's easy to see why. His songs are jewels and poetry in motion. But I love his versions and voice. Love this video, and still get a kick at seeing Tony Brown at the piano, making those evil faces of his!
How has Rodney not been invited to become a grand ole port member....its beyond me. Genius songwriter, amazing singer. Proof that country music is no longer really country
This is one of Rodney's best catchy singing patterns I ever heard during his career! The other hit with the similar pattern would "I couldn't leave you if I tried".
Rodney Crowell is amazing and eh has written some of the most classic country-rock-folk songs ever. After All This Time, Ashes By Now and If Looks Could Kill only start the party. What a talent!
Can't believe this song was written in 1990. Musicians back then actually had such a desire to create amazing music and melody as this song than compared to the musicians we have today. Now it's all just about sex, money, and drugs. Such a shame.
@@ALLOUTWildlife And the others are about whiskey! To be fair, country music has always had drinking songs, but songwriters today seem to plug "whiskey" and "beer" into just about every song -- along with "back roads" and "truck." Must be part of a formula they know will get songs on the radio.
He was one of the most underrated singer and performer as someone said on here. I always enjoyed him. He's so very talented. I just don't' think that he cared that much about being popular or "stardom".
if country radio would play hits as this, it would make my day so much better. Rodney is the man for country hits. With Emmylou they are a killer team. Just watch ACL back some years. They were amazing. mos60
mosrite60 yes they do make a killer team. Also Rodney Cromwell has written a lot of number 1 songs. from the Oak Ridge boys, Tim McGraw, George Strait etc now you know why he called the "Jewel of the South". I think this song was written when him and Roseanne Cash were divorcing.
This guy wrote so many great songs and is a great performer, so I can't understand why he never became as big a star as some of the other guys who have nowhere near his talent. Garth Brooks for instance. People have taste in their A-holes.
Anything written by, performed by rodney crowell has more integrity than just about anyone who survived the music business and still produces the volume of combined music and poetry (aka music) and holds your attention so tlghtly, not a dud or a "soso " in the lot!
I believe its Steuart Smith strat, Tommy Spurlock pedal steel, Michael Rhodes bass. Piano ? drums ?. great country stuff. I'll take it every time. mos60
In the video, the piano player is Tony Brown, famed producer. You can see him in the Rodney and Vince Gill video, "its hard to kiss the lips at night that chew your ass out all day long".
"If Looks Could Kill !" We men know all about that look when we really screw up. I messed up my marriage and the look in her eyes when she left cannot be explained. Missing her still.
+09jitters I hear ya man.....Been married to #3 for 30 years. It just aint easy . It just aint easy no matter what you do or say, nuttin is gud nuff. Was that way with #1 and #2 also and with mom in her last year of life.. Keep your head up though. In the end, they will suffer more than you. Guaranteed.
I'm surprised that the best song on the same album as this one - "Don't Let Your Feet Slow You Down" - isn't uploaded here on youtube! If anyone can do me favor ...??
I don't like country music- never did- make no apologies about it- I grew up listening to the classic oldies & early rock'n roll. Buddy Holly, Everly Brothers, Beatles, & Roy Orbison. My BFF was about 3 years younger than me & we spent all our free time at her house. She had every tape this guy made & she played them till I asked who it was; & told her his voice sounded like a happy Roy Orbison. She made me a mixtape, which I still have even though it doesn't play. I miss the 1980's & being young. I miss good tunes & true artists. I miss my best friend. I really miss her. But I still don't like country music. Xoxo CDC
It's a shame that Nashville has turned into the joke that it is. Rodney Crowell, Dale Watson, and others with real talent can't get a true "break" while clowns like the one's you listed are get all the glory.
A truly gifted singer. Thank you Rodney Crowell for sharing your beautiful voice and lyrics.
One of the most Underrated Performersand Songwriters out there. This is the era of some of the absolute best country music From the late 80s-late 90s
Very true
WHY CAN'T THIS "REAL COUNTRY" BE PLAYED ON "COUNTRY" RADIO????? WHAT SOUL!!!! WHAT FEEL!!!!! TODAY'S COUNTRY CAN'T EVEN TOUCH THIS STUFF!!!!!
Today's so called country music is pure crap. This is real country.
106.9 abolee tx
It was played on the radio 30 years ago
He is a big star in my eyes. His voice. His lyrics. He's got it all!!!

❤ much Love and respect for Rodney Crowell been enjoying his music since well early eighties❤ and still too tapping his beats!🇨🇦
I didn't know alt country existed until I heard this song when it first came out. I've been a fan ever since. Great traditional sound.

Only just come across the music of Rodney Crowell and i am smitten with him
Was not too long ago that this is the way it was for me. The song is a testimony for me.
How has Rodney not been invited to become a grand ole port member....its beyond me. Genius songwriter, amazing singer. Proof that country music is no longer really country
I could listen to him for ever, brilliant voice.
This is one of Rodney's best catchy singing patterns I ever heard during his career! The other hit with the similar pattern would "I couldn't leave you if I tried".
Check out "I Know You're Married" on his Diamonds & Dirt album.
Rodney Crowell is amazing and eh has written some of the most classic country-rock-folk songs ever. After All This Time, Ashes By Now and If Looks Could Kill only start the party. What a talent!
One word: "authentic"
Can't believe this song was written in 1990. Musicians back then actually had such a desire to create amazing music and melody as this song than compared to the musicians we have today. Now it's all just about sex, money, and drugs. Such a shame.
And drinking! Can't forget that, because every other song is "I'm great at drinking beer...let's go drink beer...want a beer?...My life is beer."
@@ALLOUTWildlife And the others are about whiskey! To be fair, country music has always had drinking songs, but songwriters today seem to plug "whiskey" and "beer" into just about every song -- along with "back roads" and "truck." Must be part of a formula they know will get songs on the radio.

Steve's The Weekend came out when I had.....a Weekend.
John Stewart (Daydream Believer, Gold, Runaway Train) makes a cameo at 2:00 lol. He's the guy doing all the painting....
Man what great backup musicians here. excellent cannot describe this. superb folks Rodney is king of country. mosrite60
mosrite60 totally agree! That steel guitar and all of the musicians are spot on! ❤️
Rodney has done such great, consistently well done material. Is that a young Steuart Smith on the Stratocaster?
I have loved this song for over 25 years probably....
Not only does he put up to back up but his killer vids are outstanding and he is youth personified.
Beautiful song and Rodney always has great videos to go along with his great music

Great song all around. Guitar, pedal steel, bass, piano, wow, amazing gig. mos60
This guy wrote so many great songs and is a great performer, so I can't understand why he never became as big a star as some of the other guys who have nowhere near his talent. Garth Brooks for instance. People have taste in their A-holes.
this whole album is excellent

Rodney hit #6 in Billboard, 5-19-90. God bless!
I always remembered this song for that red paint spilling at the end. 😂 Still a great oldie though. 😁

+09jitters I hear ya man.....Been married to #3 for 30 years. It just aint easy . It just aint easy no matter what you do or say, nuttin is gud nuff. ***** Even the Book of Proverbs says that it's better for a man to live in a corner of a room than to live in a mansion with a nagging wife.
Fantastic singer and awesome band
Love this song
man, are the words speak the truth when we come home after Friday night bar scene!
Rodney has a great turn of phrase it is true.....He don't need to tour with Emmy Lou.

Real Country sound!

Had that feeling time or two.
Rodney has more talent in his little finger then McGraw, Chesney, Urban, and Raqscal Flats combined.
Was that from the movie, The Get-Along Gang (1998)
Love ❤️ love ❤️ ❤️ love
The best

@robhan2011 You said it brother... it's a shame what passes for "talent" these days.

Ahhh, back when capes were cool…….
He is definitely family just ask grandmother when you see her on heaven's banks
Go yes
Michael's long hair, is that really his?
I heard this song at my first Rodney show in Alabama.
It's a shame that Nashville has turned into the joke that it is. Rodney Crowell, Dale Watson, and others with real talent can't get a true "break" while clowns like the one's you listed are get all the glory.
Do you mean Gene Watson? (Farewell Party)
hell I'd already been gone
Bro is opium
I dont think the piano player trusts Rodney, he keeps looking over his shoulder at him. lol..
Bro trnya be like destroy lonely
Stinging eloquence, old school drive.
Jpjeff
bro is not lone💀😭
Rodney is the most handsome of all the other loser singers next to Ricky van shelton
In my opinion RVS IS THE BEST
followed Rodney forever - dreadful looks from the band and himself - was she that bad !!!
Me encanta ésta canción country
hell I'd already been gone
@Rodney Crowell I'm tired 😫
