I am from western KY but have been coming over to the Redbird Ranger Station as often as I can for probably 20 years to ride dirt bikes on the red bird crest trail. I think it is around 100 miles and about as remote and solitary as it gets. I was there just a month or so ago I think we end up covering 3 counties in the region. Honestly once you past Manchester it is like being in another country. Sure, the area is poor and you have many of the same problems poverty and drugs bring into my town as well... but East KY is just a special place with so many kind hearted people. When you really get back in the hollers, people do not understand how many homes are on an opposite side of a creek with a private bridge into their homes. I can't imagine how many of them are cut off. This will not be a simple or quick fix. Lives lost or forever changed. Comments on these stories from people are littered with judgement about how people "should not live next to a creek"... Those people have no idea what this terrain is really like. This area is not a "flood plain".... These were raging torrents of rapids like no one has ever seen before. So much pain and suffering going on over there. At this time.... Help them.... Do not hurt them with judgmental comments.

Thank you so much for the kind words sir, I live in Letcher county and thankfully all I got flooded was my car. My wife’s mamaw lost everything she had. I’m glad you enjoy eastern Kentucky, Bowling Green is as far west as I’ve been in Kentucky but I would like to one day go all the way to the Mississippi.

Keep the faith! Lots of folks are here to help in the weeks and months ahead. My brother has a house in Bullskin. He moved back.to FL a few years ago to help with our parents, but as soon as his neighbor called he loaded up his truck with tons of bottled water and cleaning supplies and headed home to help neighbors. Florida and our Governor is there to help now and later. Praying for all of you! You guys are some of the toughest folks in America and I want you to know you are not alone in this!

It’s scary how deceiving flooded roads look. We don’t realize how dangerous it is. My thoughts and prayers are going out to those who have been directly impacted. Thank you for sharing, Todd.

I go till it gets up over my tires then I back out if it goes any deeper. And even if you know the area sometimes the roads and bridges will get washed away and you want know it till you have sunk!

My heart goes out to everyone there. My mother was born and raised in Kentucky. I am in northern middle TN. Thankfully our Gov reacts quickly when things do happen. I live on a major creek not far from the KY border. Looking to move out of the impact crater. I've seen that water come up to close for comfort and like you, I wouldn't be able to get out or in. I've been stuck both ways many times over the last 10 years. I used to have freezers and a couple of fridges full of food until we had a power outage from a tornado a few years ago. I heard it go over my area and hit near us. We lost 19 beautiful souls that night. Our power was out for a time so I started canning everything I could to get it out of the fridges and freezers so the foods would be shelf stable. Luckily, our power wasn't out very long but it did teach me not to rely on the power. I only have the freezers for short term now. I buy in bulk, sales etc put it in the freezer and work to get it all in jars, mylar bags after dehydrating and other food preservation methods. We also have stored water, fuels etc. You just never know when a situation hits and I'd rather have and not need than to not have and need. I am also prepared to help my neighbors.

I am quite aware of people who live in "hollers" because I am a native WVirginian. We have many "hollers" in WV, KY and VA! Some people live so far into or "up" the holler so that when a flood comes they cannot get out. Many years ago this happened when an unexpected flash flood occurred in Cabin Creek which is close to Charleston. So, my heart breaks for those people who have lost everything and or loved ones in WV, VA, and eastern Kentucky.

I'm glad you didn't try to drive through that running water. So dangerous! So much damage there - your friend's truck and bridge - how awful. Here we have a few private bridges lost in the 2020 fire and they've never been replace yet. Apparently, it is very expensive! Your friend got hit hard. We've got another fire disaster nearby now and while looking for information about it, often I read news headlines about our fires and Kentucky floods - the news agencies are lumping them together into one story or article. So now, thanks to you, I've seen the damage of the Kentucky flood. I hope everyone involved will recover what was lost. You're on South Fork? We've got a road called South Fork here too - just up the road from where I live. Your road damage is considerable - I hope the county or state will fix that for you.

I can't stress enough: you need to be stocked up on nonperishable food like canned & dried, & keep your generator in good running condition at all times! I have a well-stocked pantry of store bought & food bank canned fruits & vegetables & a smoker barbeque and two bags of charcoal. It's just me & my cats so don't need much, but if there's more people, then you need to allow enough for at least a week for everyone. Also candles, lanterns, flashlights, first aid supplies, fresh water. I have a water pitcher & dispenser that uses filters to purify water. You could probably turn some of that flood water into drinkable water with them.
    God bless you all+!+!+

I was wondering why so many people were caught off guard. Seems internet and cell service was the first to go. Cell service on a good day, isn't much in these mountains and hollers. 🙏

Did you drain the carburetor on the generator? The ethanol in the fuel is not good for long term storage. If the generator has a steel fuel tank, drain that too to store it.

Thanks for the advice. I start that generator at least every two weeks and it always fires up on the 3rd pull. But not, this time. Sometimes things fail when you need them the most.

@@ToddWittenmyerBackwoodsLiving One more tip. Seafoam is a mechanic in a can. Look for it at Walmart or an Auto parts store. Put a measured amount in the tank and it may help clean any clogged jets.

Do you have a Kickstarter campaign page set up for your community Buckhorn? That is one to get funds to start the rebuilding process. Be as transparent as you can about where and who exactly the money will go toward. Keep updating about the progress being made.

Joan, if ever a video is too fast for you: touch the video picture area. The upper right corner will reveal a ⚙️ image. Touch it. Then, touch 'Playback speed.' Here you can slow the video down all the way to a quarter of it's original speed. Plus, you can choose to speed it up, if you want. ❤️‍🩹💫

Get the neighbors together for a BBQ. I live in Florida, every hurricane season we lose power. 😑 So we just have a big BBQ.
