    One thing that I really like about the reviews from the Camera Store. They are honest and give the "good and the bad" of the cameras they are reviewing.
    Great job once again!

      +Nia Koehn TCS sell the products they review. And they give an honest review and compare it to other products that are competitive and some that are above the class of the reviewed product. Then, there is are the reviews of it's video capabilities, if it has any. The videos are well paced and cover a wide range of use of the product. I bought a Panasonic G7 based on their review and am completely happy with it. DigitalRev has changed ......

    You're right Chris, I think times might be changing a little bit. It's a lovely camera, looks super quick, but also there are plenty of other smaller options out there these days. FairPlay to Nikon though for bringing out such a beast.

    1.The photo desk does not want huge files
    2. The clips are used primary for mobile news media
    3. We need to be very quick in our post to meet the deadlines
    4. D5 not designed for people like you who do film making
    5. Its perfect for us in order to get quick high quality vid files out

    Nice video guys. Poor me is still using a Sony NEX-6. A few days ago I went to shoot some racing cars and to be honest, I was quite surprised on how good the results were. Lots of sharp images when set to continuous autofocus. Only problem is, in that mode, it shoots quite slow. But overal, pretty okay results when comparing the price with this camera.

      +F Ridge Pro or Flagship? The Canon 5D Mark III, 810, and 750 and A7Rii could all be considered pro cameras at this point. I do concert photojournalism, and I would not be carrying this thing into a venu at all. I'd much rather take an A7Rii and chuck an 85mm G Master on it or a Canon 5D Mark III with some nice L glass, heck even an 810 or 750. This Camera is very Niche. I think many people will pass up on it and I love Nikon.

    As a wildlife shooter, this camera is definitely marketed to me. It is exactly what I would have wanted Nikon to make, namely even more usable files at ISO 6400, better autofocus, and reduced mirror blackout time. Your AF test was absolutely worthless, I doubt it would have even pushed my old D7000. There was definitely room for improvement in the most challenging AF circumstances, such as birds in flight and sports under the lights--neither of which you tested. Otherwise, this camera is a clear signal that we are about at the end of improved high ISO with current sensor technology, which has been fairly obvious for years now. You seem surprised that these cameras are made for specialized markets, but that has been the case since at least the D3 generation. Those who shoot landscapes probably don't care about 12 FPS or a 200-shot buffer either.

    Who's going to buy this? You answered your own question: pro sports photographers (this and the Canon flagship are released in Olympics years for a reason), and some other pro users who value the ruggedness and professional reliability. That's it. It doesn't need, nor is it designed for, mass consumption. There are far better value offerings further down the food chain if you don't need the speed. These are commercial purchases at this price point - if you are an amateur buying this for anything other than a specific purpose, you have too much money!A more balanced comparison for these "old dinosaurs" might include:> battery life / shots per battery> AF performance at smaller apertures/higher ISOs (telephoto sports usage)> shutter lifespan (relevant for return on investment over time with professional, daily hammer)> proper ruggedness comparison> lens ecosystem with which the camera fits, especially on the long and the wide end. A "small" FF mirrorless looks pretty stupid on a 500mm prime - and the lens dimensions are the same for a given image circle and aperture regardless of manufacturerI'm not saying the D5 is perfect - it is very conservative, and Nikon are still chasing Canon's tail rather than innovating - but if your living depends on it, you need a camera which will just deliver. Canon and Nikon have to cater for that market. The bottom line is that you're all a bit bored with the DSLR format, and these new cameras are just not particularly exciting, they are competent instead. The problem is that your smaller formats just cannot do what DSLRs do when you get into focal lengths much beyond normal (UWA and supertele). A better test for the D5 (or the upcoming Canon) would probably be on a tripod with a 500mm prime tracking moving objects in changeable light conditions (possibly at higher ISOs) at f/5.6 or f/8. These cameras are made to deliver the best possible IQ with today's tech, at the best possible frame rates. End of. I just feel this review, as entertaining and well produced as they always are from you guys, is trying to judge quite a niche product by mainstream criteria. I can totally understand why professional sports photographers would buy a D5, but you're trying to make out like the whole thing is a bit boring and old-fashioned. What then is the real alternative?

    I'm so looking forward to seeing your test on the Nikon D500. I'm currently using gh4, generally for video, but now I'm interested in photography, especially wildlife, again. And the Gh4 doesn't keep up at all. I had a x-t1, but that really couldn't give me the AF-performance I wanted. Especially when I tried out indoor sports. In bright, snowy terrain, it did well though.
    I haven't had my hands on a xpro2 yet. And As I don't own any glass of fujifilm right now, I'm basically set to 0 and can decide, which direction I'm going to head. Maybe Fuji x-t2 or Nikon d500.
    Thank you for your great work. I really appreciate what you are doing.

    Thanks for posting this vid. The D5 is boringly excellent, I think this is the point TCS is trying to get across. Most mid to high end cameras pack in a lot of features and I think the industry is peaking in terms of real world image quality. What makes this camera appeal to the specialist pros is the speed, and ruggedness. That's it. There are a lot of people complaining about the low iso DR, the people who will buy this camera wont need that, they will probably know to expose properly in the first place. Also, most people who bitch about this cameras will probably never own one. Thanks TCS for putting in an incredible amount of work to bring us this vid

    The problem with NIKON is they introduced their speed demons to the high end bodies. You want to shoot fast action you were limited in what you could get. The D500 is the game changer. The only people complaint know is it isn't a full body (D500) I would pair a D500 with a D810 and I would be able to handle all spectrum of photography from Landscape, portrait and sports.

    Chris and Jordan are the best, they work for a camera store, or Should I say "The Camera Store"? but don't act as sales associates working on commission. They don't even try to sell you anything. They are not fan boys or sellouts. Always giving their most honest opinion without trying to please their boss or the big pocket camera manufactures. Maybe is a Canadian thing.

    • @niccollsvideo
      @niccollsvideo 8 років тому +6

      I always appreciate when people notice that we try to be unbiased by the manufacturers and simply go with what we feel as photographers. It's not really a Canadian thing though, (we love our money grubbing as much as the next guys), but rather a decision we made at TCSTV to be honest and we're gonna keep it that way. Thanks for watching!

    a couple of each, D1, D2h, D3, D3x, D4.... might be the first one I pass on, I do both photo and video so I had hoped the video AF was great (nice for some stuff) and maybe some slow motion or other gimmicky little tricks to help keep the clips interesting... just a little steep who I can snag a demo D4 or D4s for so much less. Wonder if Nikon is behind in video because Nikon gets its sensors from Sony and thats part of the deal.

    Extremely thorough review. Guys. Quick question when cameras shoot 4 K video why do they crop? Why don't they use the full sensor? Seems like you would have more pixels if you did. Break it down for me, please someone. Thanks.

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  8 років тому

      +Raychristofer It does get complicated. However as part of a simplistic answer keep in mind that 4K video is roughly 8MP and modern sensors are almost always higher than this. If the camera uses the whole sensor it has to address this with either line skipping/binning which causes moire and aliasing, or crop it down to the 8MP portion, or if the processor is capable you can do full sensor readout which shoots full sensor res and then down converts to 4K. Nikon just decided to crop like many others because its high quality and easy on the processor.

    Hi Chris, Now the D5 is out and when I can buy it I will. It will be not an upgrade, see that i com from the F5 and waited that long to get me a fullframe digital speces. Good, if not perfect in the hand, just the right weight, sturdy and fast, and not for the 12fps, but the reaction and buffer from it. No it will not be perfect like disapointed dynamic range at low ISO. And would prefer the video recording would approve to 20 minutes at least. Things the 1Dmark II from Cannon video capasities are better. Having my glass I stay for sure with Nikon. Now I got a D60 from somebody, so nice I can use my glass again. Miss the AF button on the rear, have missed shots, has no buffer. Depth of feeld button also missing, and my 24 mm is an 36 now! I long to have a full frame again, and like very much the usable high ISO on the D5 wish is top. No I'm not a pro, but like having good gear that is robust and can depend on it. It's also the feeling to feel good when your equipment do what you wants it does. I'm seemly a type apart, but let you know this camera is also something for peoples like me. Now i'm happy to be able to take pictures again, just not 100% happy feel I have some limits on the D60. But I live in hope.

  • @cinergiflims

    There is always something that lets the video down on nikon cameras. the 3 mins is really going to hurt it against the 1dx ii. I really hope the d500 knocks the video out of the park. Its at the right price point to really make some headway in the low budget 4k market. I dream of the day that Nikon realise they dont have a cinema camera line to protect like canon and do something interesting. The hardware is already there (apart from autofocus) all they need is some high frame rates and decent codecs. The xqd cards make that pretty achievable. Maybe 10 bit and a nice log profile with RAW.

    I can agree that this camera is a niche product but in my opinion all the other cameras before were aswell. I mean the D3/D3s and the D4/D4s all have been aimed at photographers that shoot sports, journalism and wildlife. They all had a relatively low megapixel count to offer good high ISO perfomance, had the best autofocus Nikon could offer and fast framerates. I do not see that this camera became a niche product but this line always was. Some time ago you had the D300s which was pretty similar to what the D500 is now and you also had people buying the D700. So I think this camera is aimed at anyone who uses a D4s because the flagships always have been very specialised cameras. But overall this was a great review!

    Great review as always. I would be interested in a comparison between the D500 and the A6300 in various situations, do you think it's a good idea?

    What do you think about a "mabe" Sony a9 competitor?

    That mud test... I screamed, "noooooo"! I've been covering my D4 in a towel when there's light drizzle, now I feel foolish. But I'll still keep doing it. On a serious note, are the other camera bodies "as rugged" as you describe? I thought that was a selling point of the bigger bodies, that they were just a lot tougher than say the D500 type bodies.

    I just love it when I finally see "hey guys, it's Jordan" because I really anticipate his take on video performance. I just paused the video to write this. This is what the "Camera Store" is all about: Great honest true reviews, especially about video since this is all I care about in a camera. I know I will get the proper info on this channel. Well, I just un-paused and finished the video with Jordan's take. Based on what he said I ain't gonna even consider this as a video camera. 3 minute crippled time limit per clip, did I say crippled? What is this Nikon? You guys are insane! And very poor video focusing performance. Thanks so much for the video review Jordan. Now I am educated once again to pass on this one. I just don't understand the corporate decisions when deciding how to cripple a camera but still somehow make sales at the same time. Well they succeeded in making this a stills only camera which need not be since it really has the capability for great 4k. Bravo Nikon!

    Since this high burst rate almost looks like video it got me thinking. How high of a megapixel count can you get from just grabbing a still from 4k video? How about the quality? Wonder if that could possibly play a part in the future?

      +Yippie If you're grabbing from a 4K video, you can get a 8 Megapixel still. I've done this a few times before while using a GH4 :)

    I don't believe Nikon will release another camera at this level, a D5 successor, that isn't mirrorless, if they do, certainly not more than one. The same with Canon for their top-of-the-line cameras.

    Great video as usual!!! I guess flagships are less about practicality and more about the technological limits at the given point of time! It is there to show the world as to what the brand is capable of and as such should be regarded, more than anything else, as the "Brand Statement". Whether we actually need all those fancy tricks and finer aspects is a different issue altogether!!!!

    This camera is not for everyone, but it work for very well for event guy like me. I start from D4 , D4s, I tried to use D800, D810 and D750, but field experience is very different when you hand on Nikon flagship or Canon 1 series, shutter is click right at the point you always want it to be, focus system give confident at all time, and many others pro features that Nikon n Canon only give you on flagship model. I like you UA-cam video, but not this one at all.
