Nikon’s $6,500 professional full-frame DSLR sports camera (sdp.io/d6) competes against the Canon 1DX Mark III and Sony a9 II…. but does it really? It’s WAY behind the competition, at only 14 FPS (compared to 16 and 20), 4k/30 with a 1.5X crop (compared to 4k/60 on the 1DX and 4k/30 on the a9, both without a crop). Overall, it really lacks in any innovation. It does, however, have an autofocus system that’s advertised as being better - but Nikon didn’t give the camera to a single independent reviewer, so we don’t yet know if it really is better.

If you want a camera purely for stills, and capturing fast action, the Nikon D6 is a powerhouse. The new auto focus is fast and reliable, the iso is unrivaled, and the cutting edge connectivity paired with clever software makes this a powerful pro tool. However,it's specs are uniformly outgunned by its two main rivals one of which is the Canon 1dx mii - and it's continued reliance on contrast auto focus for live view(and hence, video) is a big sore point. For working professionals already in the Nikon ecosystem it's a worthy upgrade; for those investing in their first pro body, there are superior options.

It's true though that APS-C sensors (all of them) are pretty bad if you are in a situation where you "have to" shoot at a high ISO and especially if your subject is a person! Take a portrait of your partner tonight when the light is low and you need at least ISO 6400 (although Fuji fudges it's ISO values to look better. When you choose ISO 6400 you're really getting around ISO 4000 on any other camera so try ISO 8000). I shoot APS-C too, so I'm not biased or being a FF snob. It's a physical fact FF is about 2 stops cleaner.

I love the D6 especially from upgrading from my D4's. I have one D5 but the AF doesn't seem as quick or accurate as the D6. For studio work it's hard to tell the difference between the D4 to the D6 except in resolution. For field work/sports the D6's faster focusing system and extra MP's really make a difference in higher quality photos. The auto focus works awesome especially with the 24-70 and 70-200. To much investment in lenses to switch to a new system right now but I'm consider going Sony in the next couple of years as will many pro users. Seems like Sony is taking photography & videography to a newer level than Cannon, Nikon & Panasonic. Like many pro cameras this camera is over priced for the amount of features you get when compared to some of the latest mirrorless cameras. Considering how Covid has effected most of our income and budgets you would think the major companies would reduce their prices to help out those that have supported them over the years. It's why we have so many pretenders out there with pretty cameras, but no idea about photography, calling themselves photographers. Back in the film and DSLR era you couldn't get away with that crap. Without the SKILL you'd get poorly exposed out-of-focus images.

An excellent analysis. I am strictly an amateur photographer. I really appreciated the brief sally you made to the effect that amateur photogs would not appreciate this camera. I wold love to see you develop this theme a lot further - not particularly about the D6 but rather all professional oriented cameras vs quality cameras designed for amateur users. For example, work flow considerations are meaningless in my photography - I am delighted if I get say six really good pictures in a year. Control placement is not very important, for example. And I don't do video at all. I have never had a battery run out of juice on me. If it is raining I stay home.
I do value resolution. I dislike carrying a lot of weight. I *need* IBIS for a lot of my shots. I dislike huge, heavy, fast and very expensive glass.
I am certainly not typical of all amateurs, but I would hazard a guess that a lot of amateurs are pretty much like me. I for one certainly appreciate your recognition of the difference between amateur and professional users.

Bob in Oregon Sports cameras are really the only niche cameras in professional photography. So much is sacrificed on the basis of ruggedness and form-factor to balance for massive telephoto sports lenses. When it comes to non-sports cameras, lower-end cameras are virtually never at an advantage versus higher-end. For example, there is no way a Canon EOS RP (consumer full-frame) could benefit you over an EOS R (professional full-frame). The point he is trying to make is the D6 and 1DX Mark III are called Nikon's and Canon's “flagship” cameras, but it's only nomenclature. In real life they're very niche cameras almost entirely designed with professional sports and wildlife shooters in mind where they make a ton of sacrifices almost no one else would consider acceptable.

Since I didn't upgrade from the D4, the D6 is a big jump for me. The built in GPS adds greatly to the attraction .. hence I wouldn't consider saving $ by buying a D5. The fact that they didn't change much physically makes it nicer for me .. less to get used to or present a problem switching back and forth between cameras. I'm happy it does not have a tilt screen, which I consider a physical weak point .. something that can easily break. I looked at perhaps switching to the Z6 and frankly the weight of the lenses put me off. And I guess I AM a captive Nikon customer with some very fine (and expensive) lenses that I enjoy and want to keep using. If I want more megapixels I can shoot my D810 or D850 .. different camera for different purpose ... and even though I might not use the camera at it's maximum potential ISO, I do find that at the same ISO my D4 photos have less noise than my other cameras at the same ISO (even as low as 2500) so if they have improve ISO response across the board I think that's a plus. 2 things before I mention the differences between the D6 and 1Dx.
#1 The 1Dx Mk iii is a better hybrid than the D6 overall but if you're a sports shooter their identical in the real world.
#2 Topaz Gigapixel Ai can upscale & enhance to 4k or 8k. Keep your files small in the field unless you need raw and understand how to process raw video.
The 1Dx Mk iii just caught up to the D5 (let that sink in), only its video side exceeds the D6.
    What's the real differences?
    1080p 24fps; 1Dx Mk iii not supported.
    20fps? Only in live view.
    16fps? Real world 10.5-11fps.
1000+ buffer? Marketing for *robo shooting* trade off is battery life.
    Time lapse? D6 only
    60s to 900s shutter? D6 only
    Log files? C-Log standard only.
Battery shots? D6 3500 (8600 in CH) vs 1Dx 2800 (most likely higher since 12fps is preferred)
Security? Built-in cable lock D6 (mostly for robo)
    GPS? Global sync; D6.
    Weight: D6 slightly lighter
    Lens: 120-300mm f2.8 VR (new)
AF: no real world test comparison.
Dual pixel AF vs Triple Layer AF (fancy titles for fast and accurate enough for 99% hit rate and can see in the dark)
**AF is more on your lens than body**
Mounts: EF mount only; F mount only
    Metering: Highlight metering*
Snapbridge: backup 2mp files to Nikon cloud server syncs to your phone for sharing, also automated to Lightroom.
    Wifi/Backup: Tony; 'ZAPIER'
automates files dropped from any camera in 'photo mechanic*' (the PRIMARY Pro Photography browser, required for Olympic* Photographers) automatically sends/copies/backups to Lightroom Cloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, Salesforce, Flickr, Getty Images*, etc.
    Eye piece? Circle vs Square
A9 II? Rolling shutter at 20fps and shitty buffer/memory/EVF lag/crap weather sealing/durability/unusable in freezing temps/low battery/not balanced for large lenses/poor ergonomics/unintuitive menu*, great price though, but Nikon and Canon make better lenses than Sony.
Between the D6 and 1Dx, most likely you'll be shooting mirrorless in 7yrs since both Nikon and Canon will have pro body mirrorless cameras and while it seems like Nikon didn't do much to the D6 from the D5, they didn't have to when you compare the D5 to the 1Dx Mark III, go ahead compare the D5 to 1Dx Mark III. Aside from video that's better on a cheaper C200 that also has the other log files (higher dynamic range, unlimited recording and cheaper) what are you actually paying for while stuck with EF glass and an eye piece that gouge's your eye socket?

And if you want a non-biased review try Steve Perry - someone who actually owns the camera and uses it to great effect, and doesn't do a pick / choose type comparison (you know, when someone slates the D6 for not having a, b, c - then states "the Canon is clearly better - everyone would choose it..." ignoring the fact that neither does the Canon have a, b, c (or d, e, f). nb Totally wrong about Pro Shooters wanting video in same body - when Pro shooters are carrying 2 or 3 bodies just to avoid changing lenses etc, then they are certainly NOT going to want to switch between video and stills on a single body (you can't do the 2 jobs at once!).

I think you might be pleasantly surprised when you get a production D6 and try out the autofocus, the new organizational features, and the additional methods of file transfer. It seems to me that this camera would be worthwhile to professional sports shooters whose fleet of D5s are getting long in the tooth and who want fresh bodies for the upcoming Olympic games as well as for other sports applications. The time sync feature could help those photographers who deploy multiple bodies simultaneously (for example at track and field events). I sold my D5 recently because I no longer needed it for what I am photographing now, but I was always impressed with its ability to snap into focus extremely quickly and accurately, and I remember the discussions about the fact that the D850, with supposedly the same autofocus engine, did not actually handle real life situations as well as the D5 (maybe due to the separate processor in the D5). Name conventions (D5S vs D6) aside, it seems to me that Nikon tweaked their sports flagship, brought the connectivity along to more modern standards, and kept the rugged, indestructible nature of the product. They also updated the storage and battery solutions but kept them compatible with the previous (XQD) cards and batteries. I hope they also introduce an updated D850, which I would certainly buy. As you mentioned in an earlier video, Nikon SHOULD cash in on their high margin SLR products, which seems to be the case here, while maintaining the same price structure as the original D5.

It's so hard to be discreet with a hulking great camera. I'm looking to buy a new body but I will go for the standard size. Can't switch to canon because I have 12-24 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8 and some really nice primes. I'm still fascinated by the flagships though. I shot a few weddings with the D3 and it was so reliable. The D6 is NOT a vid camera -- I do not agree "what Nikon Camera shooter's want is one body to do every thing" -- I agree with PP. I also carry a D850 for still and vid use. Never carry just one body - now with the Z7 i use 3 bodies -- Z7 for silent shooting. Built in GPs finally -- so that there are less leads/attachments to get tangled.
As you say lets wait to see hands on tests -- the Expeed 6 is interesting -- I want to see what Steve P and other wildlife photographers have to say. I want to test the WiFI/Bluetooth to dump test/check shots to iPadPro.
Canon was always better at Vid than Nikons -- but the D850 changed this.

You're not lying. Photojournalism as a stand alone profession is dead. My university was swapping to a multimedia curriculum and phasing out pure photojournalism. The news business demands that you be able to be a one man band shooting stills, shooting video, capturing audio, writing, online immediate publishing while still in the field. To be a professional journalist, you absolutely need to have reliable video features. The autofocus has to be solid to take up some of the slack because you'll be busy juggling 3 different jobs at once. That's just the pure truth. Hell, I've been published front page with an iPhone picture, but that was a static subject. You absolutely need to have the right tools for the job you're working, otherwise you don't get paid.

As for 22:00: There is an interview with a Nikon executive about this by DpReview. In short, they interviewed their ambassadors and all the heavy users of their D5, and no one wanted better video, they actively told them they don't give a damn.
This pretty much mirrors what I see in many discussion forums and with people that use this kind of camera: They are actively annoyed by video specs. Now of course we are in the hybrid age and I use a hybrid camera to film myself as well. But about the video specs: the target audience that they have actively interviewed actively said: Heck no.
Of course, this may be different for Canon. As for HEIC: Yeah, of course this would be nice, but only as soon as the major browsers and agencies support the format. Which... may take a few other years since especially the browser manufacturer are not currently all well supporting the HEIC formats. Many in the community want a more open format to win this one. There is massive resistance. So is it an advantage? Uhm, yes no maybe. Maybe not for the people actually currently relying on jpeg so much. Would they actually benefit from this the most? Well heck yes, but since the infrastructure doesn't support it yet... not sure.
So while the argument you quote may be dismissed as being non-factual and dismissive, you know full well that a company should talk to a broad audience of the people actually using their products when developing. Not defending the lackluster camera I will never buy, but the big deal that is being made about it? Well, it really isn't. I'll actually hate on them if their actual A9 competitor doesn't add up, but for this one? Really, no Nikon D5 owner will say "I really with this was a good video camera." I know Canon people are different... but.

Tony, I'm not for certain, but if you tested the D5 with any "G" type lenses, which I'm sure you probably did, you won't get more than 10fps due to the mechanical aperture linkage. Only the newer "E" type with electronic aperture's can achieve more than 10fps. I have the D4s and I've tested it with both types of lenses and I get 10.5 fps with my 400mm f2.8E FL and only 10fps with my 58mm f1.4G lens. The camera is rated for 11fps, but I've never achieved that number in my testing or real world usage, even with E-type lenses, probably for the reason you mentioned. Canon of course does not have this same problem as they have always used electronic aperture's in their lenses.

    • @patricksmith2553

Also, as far as the "sensor" not changing, a camera is not a sensor, it's an image processor and there have been major improvements in the past few years in that regard. AD converters, SNR firmware, newer faster processor, new micro lens array, etc. all contribute to improved image quality and noise performance.

    The reason to purchase a D3, D4, D5, D6 is it's AUTOFOCUS.
The same goes for the 1Dx1, 1Dx2, and 1Dx3. You're buying it for the AF system, not the video, fps, megapixels etc.
Pro sports shooters could still shoot at 4mp if they wanted to especially in today's world of online sharing and the decline of print. Images in newspapers around the world are less than 4mp. Online especially social media are 2mp files max.
The only purpose for high mp these days is for cropping.

I didnt upgrade to the D5 as i prefer the D4 series low ISO performance (most of my work is daytime) and just not worth the $$'s
The D6 doesnt excite me, and as you said they just dont have the R+D money or desire to do better, its a bit sad - but clearly they had to do "something" given the competition and Olympics coming up.
Not at least putting the Z6 sensor/live view AF system in is a joke - the D780 gets it and makes it a true viable stepping stone.
I whole heartedly expect that they are now focusing on the D7(or equivalent Z model) that hopefully had a Dx series body but filled with improved Z6 goodness inside it - better AF, dual slots, stronger build etc - thats what will keep Nikon shooters going.

It was noticeably better in many ways and more fun than the D90, despite my limited skills. The fact that the D6 doesn't seem to be huge upgrade from the D5, it is still going to be a phenomenal camera!!! My D4 still is a mind-blowingly good camera, especially for action based wildlife photography, so I can only imagine how good this will be!! I think people are spoilt.

Wow. Good brain you have there. That's got to be what it is, because there's no other reason for it. I love how he sneaked that in there where they don't give the anti-Christian trolls a bone to chew on but can still reference a truly beautiful, praise-filled Bible passage about “a wife of noble character” to compliment Chelsea publicly, even if very discreetly. Bravo to that…

    I'm still shooting 2 D2hs in 2020. 1 with the 60mm micro, 1 with the 85mm 1.4.
Picture quality still excellent. 4 MP enough for internet. Same body as the newer Nikon D's.
Will "upgrade" to D3 when 1 of these dies.

I think you missed the math a bit on the display resolution. Sounds like it will have a 1900x1200-ish display, not 1024x768.

Canon had function to set the time from GPS on compact cameras already in 2011. However later they dropped the GPS and went to GPS through phone which is a nuisance. Every time you need to connect two devices it is a hassle.

Thanks dear Tony ... Just one comment regarding your new camera angle ... your screen and camera on the table block the viewing of the screen ... Nevertheless the video quality is great ... I like the colors and the depth of field

What I hear is: Nikon is making more cameras and lens.
What I actually hear is: Nikons existing gear is get cheaper.
In conclusion that means prices are dropping. Therefore, I’m getting closer to owning a full frame camera at this point. I’m kinda of following the videos and articles like a financial planner. Reading and watching, enveloping all the information I can to develop myself a plan forward.

It seems like Nikon D series engineers have been developing the D6 in an underground cave for all these years then they emerged and proudly introduced the D6 to the world expecting some jaws to drop without realizing that their competitors have already left them in the dust.

Hey Tony, just a quick FYI, the HEIC format you referenced is actually HEIF. Eventually it will take over the 8 bit jpeg format as HEIF is 10 bit at roughly similar file sizes.
    Cheers!

I hope that GPS works that well. However, my experience with it is you have to select how often it updates from the satellite...and I typically use every 1 minute. And if you're moving, the time might be right, but the location is off the mark...but if standing in one spot they're likely to be pretty accurate.

even though you say you try to look at it from the target audience point of view - you dont.
forget about the whole "this is the best of and for everything" mindset - this is a pure action/sports and a little bit a wildlife cam. there is no cam which is good at everything - maybe for an amateur.. like a sony a4 - which is good at somehow everything - except with delivering quickly and working in a tough environment
    action shooters don't need IBIS
pros who offer lots of services are usually not doing this in a sport setting - so this is not the right cam for them. and from pros i expect anyway to have dedicated cameras for each function. eg a busniss photographer and video grapher for company portraits, product photos and videos, or a wedding tog - all not the target audience
at a sporting event you have anyway multiple poeple and crews to cover photo and video - no one is switching jobs and uses the same camera
this camera is for action shooters under time pressure, for people working for the press - Togs that need the hob to be done quickly and efficiently
funny thing is - you startet the video emphazing exactly this and then completly forget about the longer the video took
this is not a "buy the most expensive camera and your good for everything camera" - this is a very dedicated tool for specific kind of jobs

D6 is not for me. Even as a working photographer, I'm not a sports or auto racing guy. So while this is interesting, I'm not the target demographic.
I AM waiting on a Z5 pro model. As long as it has dual slots & battery grip. Till then my current equipment is more than capable.

The issue is not the specs but rather the initial price which does not match the actual features. As usual, it will adjust to the market maybe at 5.5k or less and many people will be eager to sell their d5 for 3.5k and add 2k to upgrade

Several days ago on my birding route, I saw an enthusiast photographer with a D6 and a Nikkor 500 mm prime (with a teleconverter). Gosh, he looked super pro with the heavy duty monopod with a gimbal head.
I'd think he'd be mad if he knew a big bargain Sony a7 III body (sensor) gives higher quality wildlife images, with over 3 MP more in the a7 III. Details (resolution) and shadow recovery are critical with photos of wildlife in the wetland or forest.
It seems some with deep pockets believe the more expensive, the better. Yet a D6 is crafted for sports and studio professionals, not general purpose or high resolution requirement wildlife and landscape niches.
A D6 is the camera to have when a massive pro baller runs over you on the sidelines. But God save the lens.

As you mention towards the end some people are invested in Nikon and will have a hard time switching systems. As a Nikon shoot, my "sunk cost" in gear and lack of "deep pockets" to change systems keeps me in Nikon. I'm beginning to think of Nikon product iterations as "kickstarter" types of tactics. Nikon promotes an iteration which has some novel features, but does not address the real demands of users while implying that it will in future iterations. Thus, the consumer buys in good faith waiting for the iteration with desired features (yet they never arrive). Almost sounds like some kind of sick codependent relationship between two individuals.

I think you largely nailed it Tony. This camera is intended for the traditional Nikon pro/press shooter, and therefore is not the place we are going to see Nikon’s latest and best tech. While not as exciting, I get it. The future of Nikon is Z. The inherent optical advantages of the lens mount will produce more winning images over time, and we know (we do, right??) that a pro-style Z is coming. This is the camera we need to be watching for in terms of how Nikon sees the future of professional photography. All good stuff.
