    Good info Leah! I run several mowers and do a service on my machines twice a year, including pulling the blades and sharpening them. I also found out that built up dried grass on the blade can affect the balance as well. Sometimes a good wire brushing will cure the problem.

    I never knew they had a little grinding stone like that for a drill. I've always used the electric grinder to sharpen the blade. One thing I did want to mention for those who are doing this make sure your blade is very clean with no grass build up on the blade or when you're balancing the blade you will get an improper read! A nice clean blade before you start sharpening is definitely a must! My very best friend who passed away a few months ago used to call me the lawnmower man. LOL okay I do like to Tinker with lawn mowers a little bit but this video made me think of John Minor. As always Leah thanks for the video!

      CrankyPants double thanks, Your so right. He suffered for almost 3 years we had gone to a movie and he drove home and while sitting at a stoplight waiting for the light to turn red a girl in a SUV rammed into him I heard it all because he was talking to me on the cell phone but he did not realize I could hear him screaming asking for help he didn't know the cell phone was still connected it was in the back seat I finally got home got on the land line call the police they told me they could not trace the cellphone without a court order long story short they eventually found him the hospital misdiagnosed him three weeks later he went to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and was diagnosed with a broken back and needed surgery he's been in and out of a nursing home with a catheter and not able to walk he finally succumbed to his injuries. He was my best friend and sincerely I mean that he was my best friend.

    This 100% sold me on the drill sharpener. Pulled the trigger on it and it's fantastic.
    I didn't get the balancing tool, but stuck a nail into a stud, hung the blade and made it level against the wall to mark a line. Then I let it hang free and saw how far off of level it went. I may add a few degrees of marking on either side to tell more easily.

  • @ceretomer5987

    Don't forget that when balancing the blade, the surface that you're testing on needs to be level. If not, the blade will look unlevel.

    I remember my dad using a balancer like that like that as a kid. It was voodoo magic when you're little. Then I got older and started cutting the lawn and part of that job was sharpening the blade and using the balancer myself.
    Fast forward a few decades and Dad now pays somebody to mow his yard and I've got a few acres of mowing on my own property. It's some pretty rough stuff. Probably should use a brush hog but a lawn tractor will do. But that also means lots of sharpening.
    I had forgotten about that little balancer until this video. Dad's coming out to visit for a few days. I'm going to call him up and ask if he knows where he put that little guy. Thanks!

    That is something I need to do now on both of my riding mowers and instead of using the balancing tool, I use a nail put into a pole and once the blade is sharpened place it on that nail and the end which is higher is the one you need to sharpen more until the blade is balanced. It is that simple and the hardest part of the job is getting the blade off, and back on the mower. Since my mowers have three blades that job is tougher when it come to taking them off the mowers.

    May I suggest using a couple of drops of 2 in 1 oil on the stone I use a dewalt hammer drill on the med speed setting don’t go too fast you will heat the blade too much and weaken the steel slow and steady wins the race battery operated drills can hang up easily with electric you get a nice slow constant speed awesome video by the way very informative

    I use a file on the blade and balance it on the tip of needle nose pliers. If the blade is even slightly unbalanced the mower will vibrate and cause the carb to bubble gas back into the tank.

  • @elained2448
    @elained2448 6 років тому

    Ms. Leah, those little sharpeners are less aggressive than a grinder. Blades seem to last longer with them. And the balancing tool is easier than a nail! Mine doesn’t look near as good as yours :) I would suggest though that folks sharpen their blades each time they see the grass cutting rough. It looks like a tear and not a clean cut. For our mowing season, it’s only about four times a year for the couple of acres. It allows me to clean the deck properly, grease everything that’s hard to get to, check belts; more importantly it helps the grass to stay healthy.

    • @seejanedrill
      @seejanedrill  6 років тому

      Wow, Elaine, that is a large property to mow!...I can see why you need to sharpen your mower blades more often than most. And I like the way you described how people will know when they need to sharpen their blades...when the grass looks more "torn" than cut clean through.

    Installed these on a riding mower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxetgfkJxfdT_B2vGYP-uNTLaBbim9OKTD . They were sharp out of the box, although I've never liked blade edges that were coated...not quite as sharp as I personally want. Using my belt sander, I removed the coating from the cutting edges and refined the edge enough to shave with them. So far, after three runs, these blades are holding up as expected. Even after hitting a few fallen 1/2 inch or so branches, the edges are still sharp as heck. No edge dings, no warping, etc. As far as installing them, the cutouts were of the proper size and shape to fit my aging Craftsman mower. Very satisfied.

    The hardest part is taking it off and putting the blade back on the mower. Maybe you should show that as well.

      I put might on step just to hold it up a bit. Don't do it too high. The I find the right socket and wrench. Sometimes you will need a box wrench to give it a good wack. Use a piece of 2x4 to jam the blade still. Now take off the blade bolt. I always replace my bolt so I won't loose it. Wala, one removed blade! Now you can sharpen as she told you too. Fool proof. Replace it in the reverse order. Good luck
