Insurgentes | Steven Wilson Documentary | 2008

- The Insurgentes documentary / road-movie Lasse Hoile made in 2008-9 about the recording of my first solo album has now been remastered and can be viewed here. It’s a snapshot of where I was at that time in my life - having recently turned 40, this period was about taking some new creative paths, and both my solo career and work remixing classic albums began around this time. We had a lot of fun doing the film but it was not the happiest time for me in my personal life (which definitely comes across), plus not everyone got what we thought was surreal and funny. So I think it created an impression of me as a rather dour and over-serious individual that for some people is - understandably perhaps - still their overriding impression of me! Still I'm proud of what we did, and I believe it remains quite unique in the pantheon of music documentaries.
Directed by Lasse Hoile
Produced by Lasse Hoile and Steven Wilson

About Insurgentes:
Insurgentes is a documentary film about Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) directed by Lasse Hoile. Insurgentes is a musical road movie that follows the making of his solo record of the same name, and is a portrait of an increasingly rare artist who works with music and media out of love and not for fame and fortune, persisting in making art on his own terms in a world where 'throw away' mentality is increasingly becoming the norm.
The film features footage of Wilson with other artists and friends including Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth, Jonas Renkse from Katatonia, the Israeli superstar Aviv Geffen and the legendary producer Trevor Horn.

25:36 "I used to spend the whole show staring at my shoes"
What shoes, Steven? :D
Lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My dad bought it when it was released and I couldn't understand it because I was like 9 years old. I'm 22 now and I think this is such a beautiful documentary! Very nostalgic too!! 🖤
The greatest documentary in disguise as an existentialist horror masterpiece. Love it.
The other way around
This album blew me away on first hearing. It was like the kind of music I would be making myself if I was in the same position.
I later found out he lived literally a mile away from me and I'd be running past his house on occasion. My favourite artist and I never knew how close he actually was.
I watched this documentary at a strange time in my life and Steven Wilson's music has always been there for me in my darkest times. ❤️
there's a story there ! do share please?
I loved your interview with Rick Beato Thank you and I just bought your book. Excellent so far
Holy crap... Growing up in a family that actually helps you do what you love...
Can't believe this is now available for free! A true gem!
Completely forgot i appear briefly on one scene, i'm so happy i got to be a small part of this awesome documentary!
which scene?
@@NewTSLA signing session at Avenida de los Insurgentes, almost near the end 1:11:59
I envy you, never saw porcupine tree or steven live
@@blindhouse4744 i hope you get to see him live someday, he's great!
@@henryeatscereal supogo que hablas español, espero que wilson no muera antes, ya está señor 😪
I absolutely love the album Insurgentes. I own the dvd too and haven’t watched it in a long time. I’m glad Steven changed his mind about having kids. ❤
Watching this right after seeing SW interview on Rick Beato. Nice comparison of SW now and then back in 2008, he seems more relaxed and content now actually on that Rick Beato interview! Here he swears a bit more, a bit more uptight and that answer to the lady on the Tel Aviv beach: I PLAY WEIRD SHIT hahaha. Nice to see him grow not only as a musician and as a person. Isnt he married now too?
Im gonna go listen to the new album when its out and not gonna complain or ask for PT to come back. I love every direction this guy takes as a musician, not just the heavy prog rock stuff.
Oh and also, I write my own songs, first ever video I did for my song “Comet” was inspired by Stevens video for “Nowhere now”.
You can find it on my channel. Thanks for the inspiration mr Steve Wilson and hope you keep making beautiful music that only YOU want to make.
This is very significant, insightful and funny. Your music is substantial, precious, and full of integrity in my opinion.
36:40...Steven W, Jonas R and Mikael A... how much talent in that room...
I waited three years to learn english that I could understand this amazing documentary, thank you a lot
Really loved the visuals and dark ambient sound of this record.
Significant other is probably my fav track on the album.
its bass communion music
2008 or basically the whole decade was great! The era before the social media, so many good memories.
Social media has a lot to answer for, but it's not going away anytime soon.
I watched it about 6 months ago, and loved music, visuals and all about it, cause I love Steven’s music a lot, even his psychedelic period
What a great dad.
Love it. ¡Por favor habilitar los subtitulos en ESPAÑOL!
Amped for this. My most listened to Steven solo record. Probably my favourite. _Salvaging_ is a masterpiece.
I do not have enough words to describe my admiration of the Steven biography.
Thank you dear Steven Wilson 🙏🏻
Just absolutely massively enjoyed. The perspective of Steve's dislike of music being found solely on the internet but NOW in 2024, if it hadn't been for me listening, almost constantly to UA-cam, I would not have really found his music, in all of it's forms, along with so many others. I still buy albums and CDs because I like the collection of the artwork, like he says, it kind of goes hand in hand when you love music. Thank you for this documentary, Steven Wilson. I've been paying attention to your genius.
What a great feeling your documentary contains Steven, and a great pleasure that Mexico will always love you.
I have watched this documentary at very important times in my life, Steven's music is such an important part in my life, he has been in my darkest times 🖤
Masterpiece. One of my favorite albums ever recorded.
29:54 The Iconic Duo haha Steven, maybe it's time for a new collaboration with Mikael. A Storm Corrison Part 2? haha
Thank you for this, Mr Wilson!
UNBELIEVABLE! Made my day. ❤
Love this documentary. Really cool and a great companion with the album.
Best record ever.. it was really significant for my life. Grazie Steven.
I really need a full room tour of Mikaels record collection!! Thanks for uploading the documentary!
Just srart 43 min... I got so emotional. ❤️🙏
Dear, Wilson I love you! Love you music, art, voice. Thank you so much for inspiration. 😍🎶💐
Amazing piece of art, congrats Lasse and respects to you Steven.
i'm blessed to 'know' you, steven wilson!! 40 is a golden age 😉🗝️🕯️ thank you... Thank You
Love this documentary and soon after bought the limited deluxe Insurgentes vinyl edition….and that sent me down the rabbit hole of collecting every subsequent SW deluxe set ever since! 🙂
What a lovely surprise. I love this album and have never watched this doc.
Super! i needeed to see! Thanks Steven! 🎉
Thanks for putting it up Steven... I was taken on a journey..
This work of art!! ❤ I love you so much forever!! 😊❤
Thank you Steven. Just been watching your interview with Rick Beato too. Can’t wait to see you live again. I’ll be coming down the shiny and contoured railway lines. Don’t smash any more iPods ;-) Respect. ❤
Me emociona tanto poder ver de nuevo este documental :D gracias :D
Love it all! Great work!
He obviously managed to get a very decent early start as a producer/engineer thanks to his Dad 👌🏼
I wish my dad was like his,not the sadistic Monster whi did unsperakable things to tittle children and young andults. That is wehat makes me feel so glad for him,SJW.

I am speechless. What a masterpiece ❤❤
Hell yeah. This was a formative doco for me, but I no longer have a DVD player for my copy. Thank you.

Yess! it's time to watch it again in high quality ❣
Love your current interview released this week by Rick Beato... fantastic stuff!
Thanks for sharing this, it’s still so 2008 it hurts
Hauntingly beautiful! ☮️
Wow so happy this got uploaded
I've been watching my DVD of this off and on for years!
Bought this on DVD on its release; the best documentary of an album release, which is really a horror film homage, ever committed to film. A Blu-Ray bells and whistles release please :)
Looking forward to watching
I still have my DVD, love it!
I have this since years, but thanks for uploading anyway.
gracias sr. wilson! 😃👍
Thank you so much for sharing
i love you
Love it😍
Soooooo many memories!!!
It’s funny how Stevens “iPod protest” has aged considering that it has so rapidly become antiquated by streaming services. I’m sure it would pain that era Steven to know that I first listened to Insurgentes as an illegal download on my iPod using shitty headphones.
FINALLY
now I can watch this in full HD
Watching Steven Wilson, Mikael Akerfeldt and Jonas Renske on the documentary. As Steven Wilson's Porcupine Tree's Opeth's and Katatonia's fan, that was marvelous!
This album is indeed hauntingly, ghostly beautiful💀🖤
I was in Gloria in Copenhagen on the "premiere" back when this came out. Really special memory.
A classic returns
56:12 dude, that's the funniest shit I've seen in a while. This horror kinda vibe is making me laugh so much hahaha. Man... I love Steven
Phenomenal ❤
bloody brilliant
I love this documentary
I kind of dislike the snobism against iPods and modern means of listening to music. I'm 47 years old now and also grew up before iPods and downloads. I listened to taped copies from vinyls on a children's cassette player! Talk about the sh*tty quality of mp3s and listening to music on your phone's speaker? It was very similar in the 70s/80s for me. Not everyone could afford the highest quality sound systems. I still enjoyed the music. And I still enjoy it today from my favourite streaming service even listening on my notebook speakers.
And although I have the whole world's music at my fingertips now, I still carefully choose and select what albums I give my time to. Lastly I've been obsessed with the album "Say So" from Bent Knee and have been playing it again and again. On my iPod Touch.
The difference is, if you bought an album back then, you were stuck with it without listening to it first. The consequence was that a lot of bands produced their hit singles and filled the rest of the albums with forgettable crap. You bought the albums for the hits and were left with an otherwise bad album. Today I listen to the good albums in full repeatedly and put the one-off hits I like in my playlist that I listen to when I just need familiar and pleasant music.
Not all "things were best in the 80s".
Unexpected treat.
Watching ❤️
Damn, did not expect Steven to drop this, just like I didn't expect to drop my ipod onto the concrete.
Glad of the chance to watch this for free on YT but seeing an irony in that - at least as a UK user - it was interrupted by one or more ads every THREE MINUTES. One of the last ads would itself have run for four minutes had I not tapped Skip for the 22nd time. Still, been a fan for nearly 20 years.
Sei Unico Stewe ... ❤️ Dall' Italia! 1970 no iPod
Amazing
Thank you.
Steven's answer to the woman at 27:10 cracked the sh** out of me lol! I love him!😂😂
29:24 Steve went "oh yesss!" as he found Caravan's "In the Land of Grey and Pink" epic record
Thank You
the beginning has such horror movie vibes, love it lol
Gracias 🙏
Love from India sir❤️
Steven Wilson te amo con toda mi alma 💖
GOD DAMN LEGEND 🫡
I love the things he says about Tel Aviv... I've always been the kind of person who doesn't communicate with others, who avoids eye contact with others. I wonder if I should go to a place like that....
Beautiful work.
As an aside, I can think of one musician who was good at both sport and music. Daniel Johns from Silverchair. He planned on being a musician or a cricketer 🤪! I’m so glad he chose music. I’m also glad Steven was bad at sport so that we now have the delight of his music to listen to.
I am bad at sport, a nerd for sure when I was young, I even wrote some music in my late teens and early twenties, but life got in the way (my excuse) and it went nowhere, I wish I had kept going now (I'm 49) but I don't think I have the dedication Steven has or his talent.
🔥
🖤
Haha Steven comes across as such as a Luddite in this interview. The fact is that the digitalization of music has opened vast new areas of opportunities for both musicians and listeners. Would not have discovered hundreds of bands if it weren't for streaming.
This documentary is actually necessary despite the iPod "hate.," It is about an up and coming musician/icon who has to wrestle with the rampant vine and thorns of music production in general, going into the next age or generation of music and how it is processed 17:51 digested
That island of dolls is so creepy and haunting!
❤
A reissue on Blu-ray with the original features should be great. What about some outtakes saving in any HDD to share... I wonder.
I wish he would go back to this sound
Omg 😱😱😱
Maestro steven
Eres una inspiración
I wonder what is the perspective nowadays, with streaming and higher quality bands. I didn't get to experience the vinyl era, cause I was born in the 90's, but I do as a musician see the point of view of the artist and how to present the art. It's cool that at least as collectible there are still albums being sold.
No iPods were harm during this documentary
