Today we check out how my foot technique, the ankle technique works and how you can first start out practicing double bass.
You'll learn how to first start practicing the ankle technique on the floor and then how to transfer this motion to your bass drum pedal (it doesn't matter if you are using a chain driven pedal, a belt drive or a direct drive pedal like axis, trick or czarcie kopyto).
I use this technique mainly at tempos between 140 beats per minute up to 210 bpm.

I'm wondering if my foot is in the right place lol I put a shoe on that's a little big for my foot and I'm doing a little better but something is wrong I still feel like I'm using my hips 😂
I guess Im asking randomly but does anybody know a method to get back into an instagram account?
I was stupid lost the login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Chaim Terrance instablaster =)
The ending part is a great example of why 6 hours of pointless practice won't get you anywhere. 10-30 minutes of daily focused and proper practice can do wonders. Great tutorial!
Very true - at the same time, I wonder if all of these years, his shin muscles have gotten so quick, allowing the heal to contract faster, so that when the time came to use the right technique, his shins' strength was so developed, he could move even faster, because he could move faster? I don't know. Just a thought. His foot may seem lighter and he doesn't have to rely completely on the spring strength to get the mallet back into the starting position. His shin strength is so developed (from doing it wrong), that his foot can get back into the starting position faster? Maybe? I don't know.
I feel sorry for anyone who believes your comment.
@@joshuapearson2217 I’m sure they’re grateful for you pity almighty smart one
@@HAJensen19987 you really believe this guy can show people how to get more progress from 30 minutes of practice than 6 hours of practice?
@@joshuapearson2217 dude- I’m sorry. Really. I thought you were responding to me. No, I agree with you. Haha, mine bad
SO IT WAS THE CALF THIS WHOLE TIME!?
wow what a revelation
Same. Ive been raising my toes with my tibialis muscles.
Glad I'm not the only one. I've been stuck at a slower tempo for years, don't get me wrong it's consistent as hell but I want to be faster. This video explains everything we've been doing wrong haha
I've been doing this shit wrong for years on end, never improving and had a lot of burn in my shins
?? i thought it was hip flexors
Indeed.
This is actually so messed up, I was stuck in a double kick rut for more than 2-3 years, this one video got me out, man you really do work miracles and made my day 10000 times better, thank you so much sir!!
I literally after watching this video learned how to play double bass without burning my shins to pieces. I got up after watching and went to my drums and played double bass for like an hour. My legs didn’t hurt at all. Thank you so much
Holy shit! This literally just changed everything!! Double bass is way more comfortable now! Thank you for sharing this!
I would really want to hear the swivel technique topic.Really want to know the anatomy of swivel and understanding why swivel can be painful
yeah- I can cover that topic in one of my next tutorials
Marthyn Jovanovic sure thanks.I’m Kenny by the way.Currently graduating high school and becoming a metal drummer pretty soon.I love you videos.I understand and teach better from you.I do teach Metal drum lessons for high schools in Boston.
I do use ankle technique but with a little bit of twitching(swivel) at slower double bass tempo to 240 Bpm.Kind of like how David Diepold and Alex Rudinger use.Over 250 I start using swivel technique.I swivel like Jesse Beahler. My left have the same swivel motion. My right foot have some sort of a shuffle feeling.
I'd like to hear about this as well
It's not very common knowledge, but there are two versions of swivel technique: one has one note per-side, which is the well known version, the other has two notes per side (using an up and a down stroke). I use the second version and it is much easier on your joints, plus it really helps avoid fatigue and also helps keep track of where you are in a stream of a billion notes! ;-)
OMG thanks so much man gonna try to improve this everyday!
you're welcome!!

The best and useful video I have seen on my life!!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!!!
Good shit, man.
Putting your lessons into practice is a great quarantine activity
A great technical explanation which is much more useful than just watching slo-mo video of people's feet, without understanding the muscle mechanics 👍
This is the best and most detailed explanation of the ankle technique.Especially appreciate the part where you talk about practicing this on the floor
Looks like ball of foot on the middle of the pedal….push down, release using calf muscle, lifting heel-wonderful lessons sir, thank you!
For those of you that workout, think of it as a calf raise. He was spot on about your brain registering the noise with the beater. I had that issue until I figured out what had happened.
Hey man. Thanks for the tip. I have a question though. When you were figuring this out, was your heel stomping the pedal board or ground while on the pedal. I feel like when I lift my heel, I have to apply pressure with my toes or roll my foot forward in order to hit the drum otherwise it barely touches the drum. Did you have this same issue?
@@HellsKingSJR Had the same issue but found out on my own that it was wrong. You should be relaxed and not have so much tension on your hips. Think of bouncing a basketball with your feet. You need to play with the spring tension, position of your foot on the pedal board, and throne position of where you sit (the height and how far forward or backward) and also how far it is away from the drumset. This channel has other videos that talk about that.
Well, after 45 minutes of the on-the-floor exercise & on the kit, this has ALREADY started to help my double bass. Huge thank you for this video. Tonight, it's time to discuss finances & see if I can afford this course. 🤘
How does this technique feel when applied to the pedal? Is it some sort of twitching motion that you need to control?
Awesome!
This is the best expansion I have ever heard, seen and understood. I said goodbye to leg cramps after this video. Amazing, thanks!!!
Awesome lesson!
Awesome job Marthyn!
Amazing

It makes so much sense now!! Thank you marthyn. I will improve and practice as much as i can.
Amazing video... you actually give people something to start with, and how to do it.. well done!
Thanks Man
Thanks a lot teacher Marthyn. Cheers. Good quarentine. 🤘😎🇲🇽
Awesome explanation. I’m going to try this out. Thanks.
Man, wish someone told me this earlier, my biggest issue with double kick was that my shin would have the burning feeling and I thought it was a thing that i had to train and get used to.
Cant wait to try this! should be a game changer!!
You've just perfectly described what's been holding me back for years! Thank you!
nice class dude !!! greetings from mexico
Very good info, Marthyn, now it's time to practice. You got my like. Keep on the good work
THANK YOU
You tha man! Thanks for the advice. Looking forward to getting the program once I have the extra cash

Thanks, this video on it's alone is a bit of game changer for me.
amazing video thankyou so much. about to get my first db pedal and this is an awesome tutorial
Thank you my guy this is very helpful you deserve more likes, views and subscribers! WELL DONE!
Thank you for such great lessons 🙂✌ greetings from California. Be well in these times.
I feel like this is one of the best and easiest to follow tutorials on fast bass drum. I will definitely be following this method as I continue practicing my double bass drum technique. 🤘 Thanks!!
I had an achilles tendon problem (not because of drumming) for months and when I came back to the drums I realized that I didn't know about the pedal technique for 15 years of drumming, I had played drums naturally without concerning about the technique until I had a problem with my achilles.
Today I figure out that I used wrong muscles group and I would like to thank for your humble explanation here!
Going to be studying this video for the remainder of quarantine. this is brilliant.
Thank you Martyn, I've had trouble for years getting an effective technique with double bass this really helped me !
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Wooooow... Gracias x la info Marthyn . Un Abrazo Metalero desde Bs. As. Argentina 🇦🇷 y a practicar 🤘🏾
Incredible and really motivating material! Love it!
thank you!
Mind... Blown...
Very good explanation of how to relax and use the right muscles for speed.
Thank you very much Marthyn!!! Great job 👍 One of the most detailed videos instructions
thank you
Amazing! Is there any video like this covering swivel technique?
Dankeschön Dankeschön hat mir sehr geholfen
Super tutorial as always. Proud student/owner of your Bass Drum Mastery package and the Single Stroke Mastery as well. Just wish I had a bit more time to practice/learn drums, but it's tough as a fresh father.
Viele Grüsse aus Konstanz und bleib gesund!
This really helped. As a beginner, I typically want to sprint before I can walk which isn't good. After watching this I figured I'd try it out. What a difference it makes. Just practiced for almost two hours and the only area that I feel that got a workout is my calf muscles. No "discomfort" in any other part of my legs or anything. This technique is great. Thanks for sharing this.
Ok Cool 😎 even i understood that! Thanks
Thanks for this awesome tutorial and insight. Over the last year, I've been working on my double bass speed/control and have been improving those incrementally. BUT...after watching this last night and focusing on this technique (and the calf muscle), it took me to the next level almost instantly. I was so amped last night behind my kit. I was like a kid with a new and awesome toy! Can't wait to jump behind there again today. Thanks!
Hi, I think that all of your videos are actual treasures, basically I'm learning PROPERLY how to play drums, as a self though drummer, thanks to your videos. I can't thank you enough for everything you do on this channel. Cheers from Italy, you truly rock on the drum!
Excellent technique and brilliant way to teach it. I kind of learned this technique instinctively back when I started playing drums many years ago, but only because I'm also a distance trail runner, so I understand the importance of utilizing the correct muscles for certain activities. However, watching your tutorial confirms and further aids me to advance my technique. You have a gift for teaching! ;)
this is amazing!!!! i never thaught it is that simple ive been trying to speed up my feet for years now, and all i could achieve was getting faster with the whole leg, and this after fifteen minutes is already better
I think this video changed my life! Only because of this video I will be able to start Bass Drum Mastery again, which I stopped for a bit due to frustration but I think this video saved me! Thanks a lot Martin!! Greeting from Germany!! :)
Thank you for your great videos, have you done a video on proper sitting height and position? Thank you from Toronto Canada.
God i needed this video
Damn, my man's busting out the whiteboard. Thank you very much for the detailed explanation!
Short and to the point. Appreciated! It would however be top level if this could be instructed without the use of shoes in order to see the actual motion of the full kinetic chain. Many of us (myself included) never use shoes while playing. Much for the same reason Petrucci and Wooten does not use gloves.
Dude thank you for the video! Im glad you talked about the starting point being different for everyone, my comfortable/natural bpm is 180, and i just assumed I was doing something wrong because the jump from 120 to 140-150 was a lot to take on at first but 180 felt easy haha. You're a warrior!
Just practiced a bit on the floor and my calf(don't have a clue how it is spelt) are burning!
Your content is amazing keep it up!
My legs are running me to the kit right now !!!!🏃🤸🦸
Odlican tutorial 🍺🍺👍
Marthyn, thank you so much for this lesson, its a game changer completely for me, I had the exact same issue as described in the video, I really thought i knew what i was doing haha..... my shin muscle also always hurt like described in the video.. Thank you for helping out SOMUCH
I have a ton of family from where you live 💗I love your videos ! I have been looking for a teacher like you ☺️ I am considering doing some online classes if available I just started playing a couple months ago ,self taught so far lol well ,I mean you tube self taught 😂! This video is amazing free info thank you for being so generous in sharing your knowledge !
I've been playing the bass drum wrong this whole time??? Dude, that tip about using the calf and not the shin changed everything. Super motivating material. Thank you!
This is so cool and very well explained. From my understanding this technique is counter intuitive as what we have learned that when playing heal up, dropping the leg corresponds to a hit on the bass drum head (not including double and triple strokes). But with this technique contraction of the calf muscles and thus lowering of the ball and toes of the foot correspond to a hit on the bass drum head. Time to get in the shed and practice.
This is exactly what I needed! I was able to play up to about 190bpm with heel up before. But when playing endurance excercises, it always got kinda sloppy after some minutes and it just didn't feel like my technique was actually good. This changes a lot! Thank you
Before covid I was determined to go take a lesson in person with you Martin but unfortunately things went to hell for me and for the world in general. But honestly your educational material is so good I can't even begin thanking you enough for all the work you do.
This is the best video explanation that I saw - I was doing wrong all the time- experimenting different solution (which make you progress btw)
But now I understand exactly what do and how to get it - Thank you so much !!!!!!!!!
regarding practice on the floor:
if you practice under a table your knee will hit the table in the same time as the beater would hit the bassdrum
put something soft under the heel to get rid of the sound and you may add something on the knees to get a sharper sound from hitting the table
great way to practice while working ;-)
thanx Marthyn for creating bassdrum heroes all over the world!
Thank you for this explanation Marthyn. I've been playing drums for 30+ years mainly self taught. For at least a decade I've been dealing with shin muscle/quad problems from playing drums. It doesn't help that I've lost about 50% of the feeling in my lower legs and feet due to some medical issues years ago. I'm still having trouble playing hertas like I used to with the feet. I also used to be able to play 32nd notes very fast consistently, but with the loss of feeling, it's been a challenge and I just can't do it anymore. Maybe with your technique I'll get there. Thanks again!
Very important - do you have video discussion of pedal springs tension, Marthyn!
Thank you so much for this video. I was thinking another double pedals video and and it won't work.. but your explaination was very clear ! I tried it today and my god what a difference !! I was thinking I will never go to upper speed. It took me 5 minutes to apply this technique and suddenly it was very easy, and I played so fast with no tension !!! I need to improve the technique but in one times it works !!! Thank you !
Before ever having a go at drums, I started listening to metal with double bass drumming (specifically metallica - one was what got me started off) and started banging my ankles on the floor air drumming like described in the video, I have done this for years and wondered if the technique would actually work for real which made me want to learn for real, But holy shit I used to piss so many people off even to this day banging my ankles on the floor all the time, people seemed to think I had some kinda nervous twitch in my legs. I'll keep doing it though as its good practice!
Hi Marthyn!!
