Very informative video! My approach to seat height has always been making sure your upper legs are slightly beyond parallel going up based off the person's height. Nice seeing a great demonstration of seat height and general ergonomics
Thanks Cameron 😊 This really helps. I was having pain in my groin and left ankle. Thank you for taking the time making this video and helping the community!! 🙏💯😊❤
Great video, incidentally, for me at least, the higher position is way easier for ankle technique, but at the same height, leaning in ever so slightly( not so you wreck your back, literally a small amount)is a really nice balance point for heel toe. So you can drop the leg for slow tempo, use ankle for high speed and heel toe for super quick. My two cents
Dude you uploaded this video at just the right time. I’ve noticed that I sit too low so I have raise my leg more and it’s really hindering my double bass
I recently began to reevaluate my positioning behind the kit both height and distance. You are a mind reader lol. I’m pretty sure I’m sitting too low so I’ll try your recommendations. Appreciate your help and efforts.
Thanks man, this helped me tremendously... I just got my first double pedal .Normally I'm playing single pedal hard rock kinda stuff ,but I wanted to try something different, and boy that doublefoot pedal gave some headache today. I was asking myself the very same things which you so answered right here in this video. As I said thank you so very much because you solved many of my problems which i had with double bass drumming
I'm tall as 1,94 and the natural drum thrones are not too high for me.So my doubles became sloppy easily and i loose consistency. So the higher you seat you're less tired and you have relaxed and fast doubles easier.
I've always called this "playing downhill". It's *so* much easier playing downhill than playing "into a wall" or "uphill". But just like in real life, it's no fun trying to go downhill when the hill is too steep.
@@CameronFleury Agreed! Usually I'm trying to convince people to put their seat a little higher, so "play downhill, but not too steep" is usually how I phrase it. 👍
This has been a big issue with me. I ended up finding a stool at goodwill that was around 24 inch high with metal legs. Drum thrones also have those rubber feet that wear out so you have to buy spares..
I may have already commented this before on a different video, but i have the hardest time balancing on my double bass pedals. My speed cap is pretty damn low and when I try/pretend to play 32nd notes, or even 'fast' 16th notes, i notice myself start to lean back. If anyone can help on this, that'd be amazing. And it could be my pedal settings too. To help, I'm 6'2" and have long arms and legs...duh 😆
my throne is super memory foam like, it squishes super far down and I feel like it leaves me unbalanced. Are higher class thrones supposed to be stiff or squishy??
My threaded height adjuster rod for my throne doesn't allow me to go higher without the seat starting to teeter. Do you know where I can get a longer one for a Pearl Roadster?
I was wondering if anyone can help me with some advice as I'm a new drummer and being extremely tall is creating some difficulty in comfort/ergonomics. I'm 6'6" and i've bought multiple thrones and even when put at their highest, they are about 28" which still makes it so my knees are probably at 85-90 degrees. Also my snare at it's highest possible still basically sits too low and the bottom of my forearms still hit on my thighs. Any extremely tall drummers have any solutions to getting your drums/throne and pedals to work well for you ? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
I’m used to playing barefoot or with socks. Lol. It’s how I taught myself. I’ll have to try Vans. I play in a church so I’m usually wearing slip on penny loafers so I can easily slip them on and off. That or boots. But I don’t play in boots.
Do your foot pedals come into play when adjusting throne height (mine are a little thicker than normal) but not sure if that matters Because at the moment I find it easier to double a single pedal than use double kick (short amateur btw) atm
Tell Tomy Aldridhe that his seat height is too low. He started out using a simple milk crate. He sits damn near on the floor he's so low, he's 73, been playing for over 50 years and shows no signs of wear and tear, at least to the point that it affects his ability to kill it night after night. I believe it's all based on personal preference and what works best for the individual.
You forgot to tell them to buy the 1600$ double pedal and be prepared to play only a limited music library which is basically just a wall of noise. Impressive sure but honestly show me your single pedal skills and not hit every cymbal every made..
This would be an awesome teaching video... except for the heavy-metal music/vocals playing in the background... what a totally unnecessary, extremely unpleasant, distraction... wth? Thumbs down :(
@@CameronFleury That would be just as distracting... your sarcasm tells me you were being intentionally obnoxious... You could be the most awesome drummer ever, but you suck as an effective teacher :/
@@CameronFleury Wow, you're dense... that would be just as distracting... Your sarcasm tells me you were being intentionally obnoxious... it's not about what genre you're playing in the background; it's just that, if you think that added anything to your lesson, you totally suck as an instructor.

Your leg seems nowhere near ‘flat’ when you’re at your sweet spot height 🤷♂️
Very informative video!

Glad to hear you do the same thing! Was anything else I could've added?
I just always sit how it feels comfortable. Turns out i've been doing it the right way!

Great video Cam!
I will also add this. INVEST in a GOOD throne!! Don’t go cheap on this piece of gear!
Good call!
Very true bro! I couldn't believe it when I upgraded my throne.. 2 totally different ball games
@@johnmichaelwindham i just upgraded mine too. Went from a sound percussion to a pearl roadster… HUGE improvement
@@throwdown47 fuck yeah, I went from a worn out Gibraltar to a Bolt! Like day and night
Sitting higher saved my back. I have the rock n sock hydraulic drum throne and I don’t believe it does quite as high as one that’s a spindle

That's true! You find that it becomes easier because sitting higher causes less strain on your legs?
I've always called this "playing downhill". It's *so* much easier playing downhill than playing "into a wall" or "uphill". But just like in real life, it's no fun trying to go downhill when the hill is too steep.
If we can find the balance on our pedals by being in between uphill and downhill, we'll be much more efficient on our pedals. Great analogy btw!

That's actually a really informative video. Good work.
Super good cue…. Eliminates confusion
Definitely helps! 🤘🤘
Your videos are so useful and informative.
Glad you like them!
I kinda wanna try an old commuter bicycle seat (the older cushiony ones with springs at the back) as a drum throne.

Excellent presentation bro, happy new year, yes exactly what I was telling to my students when I was teaching ...
Great! Happy new year to you too!

"Have fun, play drums!" Should be on a t shirt. Great video my dude 👌🤘
You're right, it should! Thanks for watching man! 🤘
For speed I have to tilt my seat back making seat higher. Maybe I just need to raise the seat height. Will give it a try, thx
Your leg isn't flat at all! You're sitting pretty high.
You can maybe try throne height= your height/3; seat length = your height / 2. That would get us in the ballpark?
But great video cameron 👏👏✌️
Great idea Ron! Thank you
Thank you for the tip man 🤘your band is sick.
Gald to be of help! Thanks Ray 🤘🤘
What about the tension in the pedal? I'm not sure if you have it loose or alittle tighter. What's your thoughts on this?
Already did a video on this here: ua-cam.com/video/91CE46j8KiQ/v-deo.html
Huh... I recently started learning ankle technique and wondered why my legs are moving so much. I guess I sit too low...
Appreciate it, brother!
Wow. You sit very high! I thought your normal height was a demonstration of a too high setting.
Interesting video though.
Great video mate 🤘🏻
Glad you enjoyed!
Great video!
Thanks Jacob!
Good advice, but it all personal. Portnoy + Mitch Mitchell had very high throne heights and others sit really low.
Nice video...I don't understand why Dave Elitch promote to sit so high ?
Good question!
my throne is super memory foam like, it squishes super far down and I feel like it leaves me unbalanced. Are higher class thrones supposed to be stiff or squishy??
I always have hip flexor tightness and always find opening my hi hat very tiring on my left leg…could this be that my stool is too low?
what about when you feel fatigue at the base of your back/top of glute? is that just endurance?
Drum Academy Technique sits pretty high
Interesting video, thank you.

10 minute video that could have been a UA-cam short.😂

I don't find that the pedal thickness changes how I play. Could be how your pedals are setup.
I noticed so many people leave their pedals bare, I need grip tape, how are all of you playing with no grip tape? Lol
Took some getting used to that's for sure!
