If you need a definition for “woke” it is the colloquial name for “critical consciousness”. If you need a definition for “critical consciousness” it is belief in the worldview of “critical theory”. If you need a definition for “critical theory” it is the academic name for “cultural Marxism”. If you need a definition for “cultural Marxism” is it is Marxism as applied to culture. If you need a definition of Marxism it is a philosophical worldview which views history as a succession of conflicts between oppressed and oppressor classes in a zero-sum competition for wealth and power.
I'd argue that those 6 figure earners around the 100k mark, have much more in common with the janitors of the world than they do the wallstreet millionaires

@@ReasonTVoh yes Im aware. More specifically, this conversation in particular is demystifying at a time when we’re all trying to understand how we got here. This interview also flowed very well. Nick is honestly a great host and interviewer. Underrated. More Nick pls.
This guy doesn't get that the ONLY people who CAN protest are wealthy, with a job that doesn't REALLY need to get done at least on a daily basis. Occupy Wallstreet WAS popular among the less than "wealthy". BUT WE HAD TO GO TO WORK
Occupy Wall Street was intriguing to me, until it went on too long without any discernible goals or asks. And it became obvious that it was protest for the sake of protest. A lot of very annoying things came out of that movement, not the least of which was the human microphone where the entire crowd repeats, word for word, what the speaker is saying. According to a book I read about the Occupy movement, the powers that be said they could no longer use bullhorns and other amplified sound equipment, so the human microphone was invented in order to disseminate information among the crowd. It started out practical, but quickly became a way for anybody in the crowd to wield power by standing up and getting hundreds of people to repeat whatever they said, no matter how ridiculous. It’s very similar to a priest speaking at mass and the parishioners repeating as if it’s gospel.
So, the first part of the interview foreshadowed the last part and proved that ideology, in this case religious ideology, blurs one's sense of reality. His failure to appreciate Hamas and Hezbollah terrorist activities over multiple generations has caused or is causing the destruction of Gaza and now Lebanon is a serious blind spot as well as not admitting that Black Americans economic trajectory is consistently upward moving since WW2. This puts him right in line with other "symbolic analyst" laboring in the universities. In short, I wish him the best in his career, but he is part of the problem, not part of the solution.
*Wokeness is an American political ideology which claims the greatest factor at play in human affairs is identitarian power politics, which has different ethics, rules, and standards for different people based on their identity, and their identity groups perceived proximity to historical power vs oppression, whether this proximity and history is true or merely imagined.* African kings can come to America, where they have more political, economic and general power than 99.9999% of white Americans, but the African King will be assumed to have less power than a white, because the Wokē falsely perceive all Africans/blacks as inherently less powerful than all whites, regardless of the actual fact of the matter. Marx saw history as a conflict between the workers Vs the capital owners, the Wokē see history as a conflict between whites/men/Christian’s/heterosexuals Vs “people of color”/women/non-Christian’s/LGBT. Merely being perceived as being more oppressed grants you different rules to live by. So what is racist when done by a white person, will NOT be racist when done by a black, because wokeness claims that true power is based on one’s identity, and if blacks lack more power than whites, therefore BY DEFINITION, whites cannot be victimized by blacks in the same way, and so we should treat these as two extremely different acts. Ironically, in a way, the worse you are as a human/group, the more morally high up on the ranking you are, IF you are perceived as being in the oppressed category. MLK said we should judge people on their actions, and by their actions certain groups are worse than others in raw facts, but in the Ibrahim Kendi view, that pyramid gets turned perfectly upside down, and in-fact the worse actions you do, the more that displays your desperation and distance from power, as immorality is nothing more than lashing out against the system which is oppressing you.
My hope is, as shallow as my comment probably is, I hope Musa sees it and takes it as intended, constructively as a communication critique, because I'd really like to see more of him in media. Interesting guy, good speaker, but that laugh-snort reflex is such a distraction. It seems to be a nervous habit, which I can sympathize with and, I wish I was a good enough person to ignore it and truly focus on the ideas, but each time he does it I viscerally cringe and it breaks my focus on what his points are.
Apples are..the fruit of the apple tree. Woke is best defined by example - adding rules to games already in progress for reasons that dont improve the game. PS - I was on track to be an Anthro Prof. I noped out. It was bulllllshhhht. Illinois State 2007. Go Redbirds!
Agreed! I want to like the premise of this book, but I feel like this entire topic is an exercise in self loathing. Musa al-Gharbi seems to both love and hate the position he's in, so he wrote a $35 book about it lol.
I agree with a lot of what he says and I like Turchin, but I'm getting more weary of point the finger at elites vs us pathological rabble as time goes on. I know he's not really doing though and talking a lot about micro elites.
Is it just me or did this guy make you jumpy? When he started picking his nose ... that was a bit too much for me. Interesting topic, wish there was a better speaker on the subject. Have to disagree that Occupy wall street was the start of this woke movement. DIdn't see any ties to identity politics with OWS ... bit of a stretch. To me when Obama started talking about Trevon was when my ears perked up (but I can easily be off ... maybe there was another origin story)
Love this convo! Also love his personality!

How could someone read the Quran and come away thinking it’s prophetic. That blows my mind.

Musa's thesis comes at this issue from a new perspective and uses data to back it up effectively.
So basically we can blame the whole frickin thing on colleges accepting too many people and offering BS degrees

You could say the exact same about the tea party...

When they decided to ignore the science and to value their ideology over the facts. The life begins at the conception.

People need to believe in something. If not religion, then it's gonna be something else. Lol
There's a key word in what you said: perceived. Perception and reality are often two different things, now more than ever with postmodernism.
A apple is a fruit you can make apple juice with. LOL

How are the top 1% and the other 99% not actually different classes?
Have you seen the churn in the top 1%? It isn't a static group. The 1% are vastly the 99% who got lucky one year and who never get lucky again.
interesting conversation, but could do without the giggling.
yeah, the constant snorts and giggles drove me crazy. Had to stop listening.

unsurprisingly, just more lies from a cultist. Curious how he has no evidence for his claims.
What?
@@BonRain8734 nice of you to admit that you can't show I'm wrong, "dude".
