Arcade Fire's win is a rare case where 'good' beat out 'popular'.
Fame monster was universally acclaimed by critics and general public so it’s more like”good” beat out “good”
Arcade Fire deserved to win against that disgusting, dumpster fire known as Lady Gaga..
ComicBookSyndicate Exactly bro.
@@ReedsRedactions fuck you
Exactly
I have to disagree with the Arcade fire one. Almost every song on that album was fantastic, and every lyric was important and well written. To say that lady gaga deserved it more because she was more famous, is ridiculous. That's like saying Justin bieber deserves a Grammy for being popular
they're not saying anything about an artist deserving it or not, it's about who was EXPECTED to win not doing so.
I was so excited to see Arcade Fire win Album of the Year. It was awesome to see an amazing alternative band get some recognition, instead of a more commercially successful pop artist.
TFM is very deep and isnt typical pop. she talks about love, surgeries, assault, drug overdose, and alcohol abuse
@@severussnape835 have you heard arcade fire?
@@severussnape835 The Suburbs is a journey of adolescent and the struggle of it.
Arcade Fire is a case where the Grammys got it right by choosing an acclaimed act over popular.
Jesus Cervantes and yet when you ask the average music fan who they remember from that year, I guarantee almost none of them would remember Arcade Fire.
Jesus Cervantes The Fame Monster was universally acclaimed.
@Brad Childress te critic and the overall public
@@Dawnbreakerr And yet again, Arcade Fire won.
@@kennygerberich4985
Solid argument
You know what they should add to the list, Macklemore stealing EVERY fucking award from Kendrick Lamar, especially best rap album at this year's grammys. What the fuck...
and for j.coles album not even being nominated
Your completely rigth. Even Macklemore accepted that Kendrick was clearly the winner of that Grammy
+snoop lion j Cole got nominated in 2016
They also forgot the biggest fucking stiff in the history of the Grammys. When 50 Cent lost best new artist to Maroon 5 the Grammys when Get Rich or Die Tryin' was released.
The Suburbs is one of the greatest albums of all time, and I was so excited for Arcade Fire when they won! However, I do enjoy Lady GaGa. The Suburbs is a triumph though
Funeral was better tho, best album ever made imo
@@sambt123 false
@@sambt123 nah bro. The Suburbs is the greatest album ever. But it’s nice to see another arcade fire fan😂
I enjoyed The Suburbs too. It's such a surreal experience. But, I still pissed that MBDTF didn't even nominate.
@@zackzallie8735 mbdtf was nominated for the grammys 2012
I hate the Grammys, but the one year I watched it was when Arcade Fire won. So well deserved. If people were confused then they didn't know music very well. It's not a popularity contest.
1Happypiper
What are you talking about? The Grammys are always a popularity contest that was the only time where they got it right.
Arcade Fire sucks.
Greg Sloan please go listen to funeral or the suburbs from start to finish and then come talk to me you uncultured swine
The Fame Monster was very critically acclaimed too. TFM is also very deep and isnt typical pop, she talks about love, surgeries, assault, drug overdose, and alcohol abuse
@@severussnape835 "Isn't typical pop"

It's hard to argue Arcade Fire beating Lady Gaga is an upset unless you just don't care about the quality of the music.
or unless you realize born this way made a positive impact in young individuals lives.
+Kelli Guerrero Arcade Fire has also made a positive impact in many people's lives, including mine.
Pepe AtScratch that's awesome.😊 and Sorry if I sound annoying to everyone. But I hate how harsh people are on Gaga, they make her seem shallow or dumb.
Kelli Guerrero nah, you're not annoying at all hah
gaga simply isn't for me, but I can definitely respect the opinions of people who like her - it's a waste of time to repeatedly insult someone you don't like, so I understand why people like that bother you
***** um excuse me? who's comparing?
Who let the dogs out won a Grammy? Oh my god...
Jessica Walton and over to Im Blue for example..
I’d take who let the dogs out over I’m Blue ANY DAY!!! But neither of those songs are grammy worthy
A song about see ugly women in the club😂
I know, I lived thru that and I still can't believe it 😩
Blue was the only pure dance song in the caregory
My favorite Grammy moment ever as when Arcade Fire won the album of the year and seeing the shocked looks on the faces of Eminem and Lady Gaga, it was sending a message to the people that don't respect any band that is not pop or rap and showing people that Arcade Fire is truly one of the most critically acclaimed group of the decade
eminem is one of the greatest artists of our generation
I'm not criticizing Eminem, and I also believe he is one of the best of the 2000's... I just think it was great for music and it showed people that pop and rap aren't the only genres out there
Arcade Fire shouldn't have won that shit. Don't be ridiculous
SaltBringer32 Yeah they should. The Suburbs was better than all the other nominees.
Arcade Fire is ridiculously bad, dont embarass yourself please, even eminem that also sucks, should have won that...
The ba ha men have more Grammys than Queen. This is a strange world indeed.
Arcade Fire the suburbs is one of the greatest albums ive ever heard. I like lady gaga, I have even seen her in concert but Arcade Fire really made something magical.
I'd say funeral is their best work
marco bazan all their work is amazing.
xxtoronto xo agreed
The Suburbs was an excellent album with some incredible tracks - definitely the best album of 2011!
I don't know what people were thinking in 2011. "The Suburbs" is a FAR better album than anything Lady Gaga ever put out. Famous does not equal good.
You said it, buddy!
"If I could have it back...
All the time that we wasted, I'd only waste it again.
...if I could have it back."
Who doesn't get a little choked up at that beauty?!
Exactly. I'm not even a big Arcade Fire guy, but it truly is a beautiful album. I actually did choke up at that line the first time I heard it haha.
The first time I heard Gaga, I thought, "Oh, Madonna has a new song out." Subsequent songs - "Bad Romance", "Paparazzi", and the unlistenable "Telephone" - have done nothing for me. She is neither original, nor "all that". The fact that her second album needed a special "$0.99" online special to hit the charts is proof. I don't listen to Arcade Fire, so I can't give an opinion on them, but they CAN'T be worse than Gaga.
Bad Romance is easily the best pop song of the last 20 years.
dear karen,it is funny that you know 3 gagas song but didnt included any from AF.you can say its because marketing or mainstream(ness) ,but awards are jokes, nothing real, made by producers and bigest bosses in music,so i dont see any buzz that you need to make.both gaga and arcade fire are great artists. im so weird, commenting another 3-y-old comment
excuse me but arcade fire's the suburbs totally deserved.
+OmarSunAndLights It was deserved by a long shot but it still upset people which is what the list was about. Lady Gaga has more fans so it upset more people.
+OmarSunAndLights Yeah. I mean the grammy's fucking suck, but the choosing arcade fire over lady gaga is not a bad pick. I don't if my beautiful dark twisted fantasy was eligible that year though,
+Shea Jenkins Beck deserved that album 100%
***** both the dark knight and twilight suck
***** No he doesn't. He is one of the most innovative musicians in the game right now.

Aaron Grech it really isn't buddy
Christian Castellanos thank you for your thumbnail
And here I thought the Grammy's have been a joke for the past 30 years but I was wrong on that. The Grammy's have always been a joke.
Arcade fire deserved it
I never knew they won anything that big until i saw it on the music video for Ready to Start
yes they did
Totally
That's not about who's the best, that's the Grammy. It's about who's the most popular. It's an upset because it defies the expectation.
OFishAS no they didn't
I love jethro tull, but hes the complete opposite of hard rock or metal. Metallica was robbed for their hard work on and justice for all
+SeabassGaming Jethro Tull is a band, not a single person. And they are great band at that, Aqualung ranks among my top 50 favorite albums. Now if Aqualung was going against And Justice for All, that is one thing, but Aqualung was released almost two decades prior. Musically, Crest of a Knave wasn't even that good, and it should have hardly been considered hard rock (certainly not metal)... Metallica got snubbed big time. But the people who vote for the Grammy's are inept anyways, otherwise hard rock and metal would have gotten the recognition it deserved back in the 70s.
@@mikeyd8183 thick as a brick is personally better
Yep. And justice for all is a masterpiece, the whole album is perfection. And yet they didn’t get it
Night shade Iggy pop isn’t metal
Night shade Iggy pop is deathgrind
Actually preferred Who Let The Dog's Out over the other mentioned songs xD
I absolutely agree (with the possible exception of Moby).
moby? oh man. moby deserved that.
Macklemore over kendrick: best new artist; Macklemore over kendrick and kanye: best rap song; macklemore over kendrick and kanye; best rap album
"The Fame Monster" is a great album. I'm not familiar with Arcade Fire so I won't argue the win. For those who call Stefani Germanotta AKA Lady Gaga talent less, you really have to do your research on this woman. Maybe her music is not your thing, that's understandable, but she's far from talent less. Watch her old videos when she was in college, pure talent.
I'm from the future as she just got an Oscar. You were right....
I've listened to the fame monster and I didn't personally enjoy it but I believe it should have won because overall it had a bigger cultural impact than the Suburbs, which is a better album musically and lyrically, but it really only shook critics and didn't really have any successful singles from it.
PERIOD
@@musicman6555 Sometimes it's not about the singles, but about overall quality, maybe it didnt go mainstream, but a lot of other acts aren't and are widely influential on their respective scenes, just as Arcade Fire for the indie rock world is.
Ummm...Arcade Fire may have upset the public but they have the coolest sounds out there. Still listening to Everything Now. Well deserved recognition!!!
And yes, they are popular!!!
Michael Jackson not winning ANYTHING for his Bad album is probably the WORST crime in Grammy history EVER, that album is nothing but PURE MAGIC!!
Arcade Fire completely deserved it. That is in the top ten albums in rock history.Sound and mood hasn't been captured like that in decades. Super Awesome!
Why is Arcade Fire winning over Lady Gaga an upset?! Arcade fire are one of the best freshest bands in ages. Lady Gagy is just an act, a show, wouldn't exist 20 years ago pre internet
Does anyone even still take the Grammys Seriously? It's just a circus with people trying to outdo each other!
I took them seriously until they gave album of the year to Taylor Swift. Now I'll just watch it when I'm bored.
Stiffkittens exactly my point, Arcade Fire is way better than Gaga !
Peter Hoffmann
A tin of sardines is better than Gaga
Stiffkittens Are you serious? Lady Gaga is one of the most talented people in the 21 century?
It is because the Grammys are a popularity contest and pop albums always wins album of the year, but Arcade Fire won
the fuck! kid a was like the best album of the 2000s how did it not win lol
Those aren't upsets to me. The Grammy chose quality over popularity. The way it should always be. People tend to go towards pop sounds not necessarily the better sound.
trust me the Grammys are just as commercial as the VMAs and Billboard Music Awards. if they weren't then more critically acclaimed music would have been nominated instead of just commercially successful albums
Metallica losing to a snoozy song by Jethro Tull is an absolute joke.
Just because a song is a hit does not necessarily make it the best song released that year. I don't feel that Arcade Fire over Gaga is an upset.
Macklemore winning anything at all against anybody was the biggest upset ever
Douche Bag Dingle Berry Breath exactly. everybody knows Kendrick Lamar deserved to win best Hip-Hop album of 2014
Not to mention he won over kendrick lamar i was so mad
😁😁😁
*shows video of a dude playing a flute*
narrator: "The Grammys recognized the year's first hard rock and metal performance..."
me: wtf
Not mostly metal but Jethro Tull is a great band. And Ian Anderson is very talented.
Im a huge nirvana fan but Clapton is a legend that shouldn't be an upset.
No doubt but the upset spawned from the fact that the acoustic version of Layla didn't seem to fit the category along with Jeremy and Smells Like Teen Spirit
Tommy Clayton Just shows how awesome Clapton is
Arcade fire deserved to win
Yes they did. The Suburs is a masterpiece of Indie Rock music.
no they didn’t
Yesss!!!!!! Quality over quantity anytime!!
Arcade Fire with their win blew the doors wide open to all the other Indie bands to surface and get recognition.
I haven't pressed play yet, but that Kendrick Lamar/Macklemore moment should be on here. And if not, at least an honorable mention.
I was so fucking pissed when Kendrick did not win
TheYeezy98 he is the vastly superior artist and his album is one of the greatest of hip hop, he should have won but he didn't
viralmelon facts. The grammy just treat hip hop like shit
viralmelon I agree I love Kendrick album but honestly it's been three years since it was released and hasn't really impacted the other debut rap albums did. Give it 15 to 20 more years and see if good kid maad city or the heist really influence popular music. That's when you could say if it was a snub or a good choice
I disagree with that. I love Kendrick Lamar but TBH, Macklemore's album was more innovate because, lyrically, it stepped over the box of the traditional hip hip lyrical themes. The heist speaks on racism, disapproval over the luxurious lifestyle, homophobia, etc. good kid MADD city's lyrics are the same found in snoop dogg's Doggystyle, biggie's ready to die, dr. Dre's the classic, etc.
Although it may be considered an upset since they were the underdogs in the category, Arcade Fire absolutely deserved that win. The Suburbs is a truly great album from start to finish, not a promotional piece for a few hit singles on the album like many albums of today.
Arcade fire wrecks Lady Gaga any day.
Although I hate the Grammys and see them as irrelevant, I have to agree with you. I did not see that as a snub. Arcade Fire's album was superior.
STFU
Okay 💀
Mackelmores win over Kendrick Lamar should be on the list. What Kendrick did for Rap and Hip-Hop in 2013 was huge.
He did nothing. He sold out, then he made a song dissing a whole bunch of rappers that buzzed for like a week. Then we went on to do nothing else note worthy.
Kendrick Lamar, the most overrated underground gone mainstream rapper of today. That's what he's known for
You clearly have not done your research if your arguing that the only thing Kendrick Lamar has done in 2013 for rap was that one song. Listen to Good Kid M.A.A.D. city, and then listen to the heist. Even the winners of the grammy, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, accepted that kendric got robbed. Your argument is founded on ignorance of the rap and hip hop genre altogether.
mrnieto1894 i agree, some people are even referring to him as the next tupac, and i can partly agree. he's bringing back old school west coast type rap, and is refreshing when compared to some of the other shit that gets released today
you should update this to include to Pimp a butterfly
Ikr fuck that generic meaningless taylor swift garbage

Mia Stevans shake shake shake shake it off! I can't tell you how much that touched me!
@@eminemstan4221 perhaps listen to her actual discography and the entire 1989 album instead of one single? maybe that will help
sarina maloy Red was a good album, 1989 is overrated and while it has some decent tracks it’s just bubblegum pop which is nothing compared to Kendrick’s masterpiece and I’ve listened to thousands of albums of all genres
Top ten uses of the wilhem scream
Great Idea!!
Top ten grossing movies with small budgets.
I didn't know about the Beatles one and when I heard it I gripped the armrests on my office chair and went "WHAT?!"
All this list does is prove why the Grammy's haven't been worth watching since the 90's. Whoever is in control can't decide what really matters in music; bullet hits, popularity or simple musicality. The categories need to be re-worked.
Since 1988
what about rage against the machine losing to limp bizkit?
Did that happen?
Fuck it - Music awards tell nothing of the quality of the music, only the sales
I'm pretty sure that was at the VMA's wasn't it?
the primary reason I, and many people I know, NEVER pay ANY attention to these award shows... all that really matters is that you and others like the music
I appreciate this list for not being full of hipster...
and now we have taylor swift winning over kendrick lamar
+The L God Beck and Taylor write their ownmusic
***** You cant tell me Kendrick wrote every beat in his dialogue, i like him but cmon man, 50 years time, yeah maybe... but people still respect musicians who can sing, write and play thier own stuff more
supercross junkie are you calling me racist ?
supercross junkie I am anything but racist, kendrick's album was iconic, full of realness ,it was rare, kendrick saved rap again but taylor's album was just corny, her previous album red was way better
+supercross junkie So how is she racist?
This video sounds like a popularity contest where the popular person lost
I disagree about "Sailing" not having a lasting impact. I'm sure it's playing in an elevator somewhere right now.
New York, New York should've won Song of the year.
“Don’t worry be happy” winning over “Man in the mirror”

I agree they did have the best album that year. Don't know how you can hate Arcade Fire they are great musicians.
+- Dankd82 - PS4 I do not know either
Jeremy by Pearl Jam should have won over Nirvana and Clapton. awesome track
Most definitely...... I love all three of them, but when it comes down to just those three songs, "Jeremy" is by far the most superior in many ways.
As much as I LOVE Clapton, for that year and category, you are absolutely right. "Jeremy" is an incredible song, supported by an incredible video. (and anyone who knows me would be shocked to hear me say that.)

Dude, that's almost half of the top 10 you listed...
Shadow Quote True that.. Nigga you are a fucking genius.
To be honest, the grammy is just a popularity show, its a weird thing when Real artists that make an effort to produce music wins the statue. If you think that the amount of grammies make a good artist you must be mistaken. in the end is a win.win situation for the public. Because Grammies are big BS.
Arturo Rincon
More likely they are paid to win those awards. I can't believe some of those awards happened naturally, money had to be involved. How else do pop songs get qualiied as rap, rock, and metal?
You forgot to include #5. Steely Dan winning over Radiohead is complete BS.

Do not forget about Imagine Dragons over Led Zeppelin.
+RESERVoirWarrior Oh Fuck No!!!!
Josh it doesn’t take much to be better than Drake but yeah Macklemore is not better than Eminem, Kendrick, Jay Z or even Kanye.
Beck over Beyoncé was definitely an upset. I don't care how many instrument Beck plays or how many songwriters Beyoncé had. If anybody Else would have released them album like Beyoncé did, they would have won Album Of The Year. Regardless if you like Beyoncé or not, her album was a game changer
Beyoncé's album was given mixed reviews and it didn't deserve to win because of sells.
+theking24 Beyoncé deserved to win because It was a pioneering album that redefined the way music is released and not to mention the diversity of themes and issues that the songs tackled from Feminism to Sexuality to Death to Love to Happiness to Inner beauty being superior to societies definition of beauty.
+theking24 it was given crtical aclaim. Still I I'm glad she didn't win
Beck is more talented
+joey Lagicere Look at Radiohead's In Rainbows not to mention a lot of other albums since. Those themes aren't particularly new. At minimum you have to admit Beck's album was at least just as worthy.
I didnt know the Grammys meant to only reward top selling artists. Lady Gaga wasnt supposed to win that year cause Arcade Fire's album was better !
In terms of talent and music Arcade Fire own Gaga anywhere anytime
Roman DickwadZilla Please, Lady Gaga is much more talented then them, but "better music" is subjective
2014 Best Rap Album - Macklemore over Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Jay-Z, Kanye West
2014 Best Rap Performance - Macklemore over Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Drake, Jay-Z
2014 Best Rap Song - Macklemore over Drake, Jay-Z, Kanye West, A$AP Rocky
2014 Best New Artist - Macklemore over Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheehan, James Blake, Kacey Musgraves
And this is exactly the reason why I don't watch the Grammy awards shows.
I'm sorry but I'd pick Rick Springfield's Jessie's girl over Bruce Springsteen
Amy Winehouse singing: "I won't go to rehaab no, no". Perhaps if she had she'd still be alive. Sad.
Sailing left a lasting impression on me though, I hear it at least twice a week during the nights on radio when i was a kid up to now.
I was so happy that arcade fire won that grammy, they defeated lady antebellum and lady gaga, so awesome, the suburbs is an amazing album
Not being biased, but Jethro Tull over Metallica should have gotten the top spot. I mean, Tull won an award for a Genre he wasn't even apart of, and he did it by beating the best band of all time in said Genre.
By the way, the Baha Men's song Who let the Dogs out were better, and more fun to dance to than the other mention songs, maybe not Blue though.
Metallica can go FUCK THEMSELVES
Philip Jepson ok
I love that when Metallica finally did win, in the acceptance speech the drummer Lars said "Thank God Jehtro Tull didn't put out an album this year"
He should have said thanks the grammys because Jethro Tull' s fault.
Puff Daddy > Wu-Tang was an upset
steely Dan DOES kick ass!!!!
Aja kick ass but Two Against Nature is horrible!!! Kid A deserves the award!!!
@@zackzallie8735 I wouldn't say its horrible. Not their best album for sure, but Cousin Dupree is fantastic, and the album as a whole sounds way better than most of the music that came out around that time. But album of the year over Kid A? It's a stretch.
@@Sam-xn1db True. But, lol you replied to me exactly when I listening to Aja. Big coincidence.
How can Arcade Fire be an upset wth??
Melissa M Because most people who followed mainstream music never really knew who Arcade Fire were, as they are a indie band who don't creep into mainstream media that much. That's why most music fans felt their win came out of nowhere and robbed Lady Gaga, who was the more popular artist nominated there. I've listened to a fair chunk of Arcade Fire's music and they are a great band, and I think it was nice seeing them get such a major award like this.
1988 Grammys Michael Jackson’s BAD should have sweeped the awards like thriller did 5 year previous
Great list. Thank you, now I will cry into my pillow.
You can’t beat Steely Dan

"Blue" and "Who let the dogs out" are great songs!
I wanna punch the grammy awarders or whatever they're called. The Beatles didn't win!?! And Bruce Springsteen and Pink Floyd lost those years?! What were they on!?!??!
Arcade Fire kicked the ass of that commercial beast !!! Rock forever.
Layla acoustic as amazing. Clapton over Nirvana for me :)
so agree. i grew up in the 90s during the grunge thing and never liked nirvana. i always felt they where way overrated.
Well that's jus where we disagree, I just don't think an accustom version should've won. The original, that would be a different story though.
Well, in my opinion the acoustic version was far better than the original with Derek and the Dominos..
Really? Eh. I just liked the original better. I'm not big on acoustic versions of songs. I only like certain acoustic sofa and this just isn't one of them.
lol, this was one of biggest surprise on this list.
What about Imagine Dragons (total horse shit) over Queens of the Stone Age and Nine Inch Nails?
Grammys are family-friendly shit
The Heist winning instead of Good Kid, M.A.A.D City was so bullshit.
Macklemore over KENDRICK. I mean he should've won something!!!
For my generation the nirvana and pearl jam snubs are probably the worst. But to see the Beatles and pink Floyd get passed over is just a crime. The Grammys are a joke!!!
I don't understand how one of the most critically acclaimed albums of all time (the suburbs) winning over a pop star's hollow debut is one of the greatest grammy upsets of all time.
"I am a woman in love" is performed by Barbara Streisand, but the song is Barry Gibb's.
Arcade Fire álbum The Suburbs is one of my favourites and of the best albums, they very well deserved the Grammy
