I love maplelea dolls I only have one Jenna to exact but I remember seeing them for a split second on a show and being totally obsessed I was like “what are these dolls? “ And “ I gotta know more about them” so I did some research and found out about maplelea dolls my mom wouldn’t get me one because she thought they were kinda scary but when I found out that Jenna was gonna be replaced with different version of her I persuaded my mom to buy me her I still have her Jenna is one of my all time favorite dolls ! Sincerely an American who loves dolls

You don't have to run down one company to make your favorite seem better.
Some of the historical dolls have strife in their stories,Addy was a slave, Molly's dad was in WWII,Kirsten is an immigrant having trouble assimilating to her new home and the family has trouble putting food on the table. Some of the girls lose friends to death, some have lost their parents. The dolls of the yrs sometimes have disabilities. Who is to say Felicity's mom isn't a top seamstress?

I do have to agree with this sentiment. While retaining the entirety of its original script, I would have preferred if the narrative also gave positive points for American Girl company as well as negative points to Maplelea so we’re looking at all aspects of both companies.

It’s interesting you say that because I as someone who grew up knowing and loving American Girl brands, I always thought that their face (particularly how the “smile” is molded) is kind of goofy looking . I’m only now just learning about the Maplelea brand this morning, and I feel that their face molds are by far cuter. Although, I do have to say that I am creeped out by their eyes the longer I stare into them. All fair game, I suppose.

I think the dolls are cute. But I cant help but get an uncanny wally feel from them.
Your first reaktion on AG was the same as mine. Those teeth! Hehe. And I grew up with a doll brand called Skrållan that spoke when you pressed her belly.
The brand still exists, but just like other 80's/90's toys, the doll has been upgraded. She is more of a toddler doll I think. When I was a child, the sound box was a tiny record player and the disk came in different colours and had different sounds on each side. I wish I still had my Skrållan doll, but she was destroyed when the basement flooded due to heavy rain. I can still remember the clicking and the static sound from her sound box when the records played. And she was heavy bc she needed those huge batteries that most 80's toys needed.

I find it interesting that what we find attractive often is based on what we are exposed to and the circumstances around that, especially when we are young. I assume there are psychological studies about this, but I can see it in myself as an older person and my evolution through doll collecting tastes. My main dolls in the 80s were Barbies, and I liked dolls with those proportions. A couple of years ago I started collecting Barbie again, and I didn’t like other lines at first. I now find I have dolls from several lines, including American Girl. 11.5 inch fashion dolls are still my favourites, though.
I have not warmed up to Maplelea dolls yet, although I have purchased some of the clothing. I think if I were to get one it would be Salia because I prefer her facial expression. I think because Maplelea dolls are a bit more realistic-looking than American Girls, they go into uncanny territory for me. It’s entirely possible, though, that if I see them enough I might grow to like them like I have other doll lines.

I found out about maplelea at a similar time to AG. I got a catalogue bundled with another magazine subscription and fell in love! I always browsed the clothes and outfits but never bought anything. Then we got an AG store in Canada so that’s the doll I bought, but my cousins had Maplelea dolls and we would swap clothing. I have had Saila for about a year now and I am very pleased with her. She is beautiful, looks much better in person. I also bought some of her outfits including the Amauti and the (new) kuspuk. I hope they re-issue her knitted hat. Her story is really interesting, Can you imagine perma-frost all year around. Plumbing is above ground! The clothing, footwear is very well made and they have long sleeves and it's not pink!! I really like that you showed the older catalog. I have never received a new one. Very few youtubers discuss or show Maplelea. The only one I can think of is Deenandbeena. Ordering from the website is very easy, never had an issue.

I got Saila 8 or 9 years ago and she is darling. If I could change one thing, I would have the body be similar to American Girl. I am not fond of the position of their arms, it looks like a ballet position. I would love to be able to trade more of the clothing with my AG dolls. I did get the buffalo plaid shirt, moccasins and the knitted 'Canada' hat. I just love that on her.

The Maplelea dolls I learned about just this year as I've gotten back into working with my American Girl dolls as an adult collector and also repairing/redoing AG dolls for fun in my own collection. Maplelea honestly looks really weird to me at first glance LOL. The faces really threw me off. I just didn't like that at all. However, your video here started auto playing in the background and when you said you tend to change people's minds I was like ALRIGHT I'll keep this playing in the background as I do something else. Immediately, when I saw Saila I was thrown to see she looked GORGEOUS to me. I will be definitely looking into her more and may find myself getting her 😅

I did just buy a Create Your Own AG doll to find a doll who looks like my family. I did originally think the Maplelea dolls looked strange, and I think a few of them still do. 😔While watching this video, I decided to look at the website. I just found the KMF31 Maplelea and ME! Doll. Had I seen her first, I probably would have bought her instead of the AG doll and for over $100 USD less. I’ll get KMF31 next month. She’s so cute, and looks a lot more like me than the customized AG doll. AG dolls’s eyes are too round to look real, though I have grown to appreciate their looks through familiarity. I think Maplelea dolls are growing on me too. Some dolls of both lines still look a little weird. But that’s a good thing. My My Life as a Girl Doll is so symmetrically beautiful she feels intimidating. I prefer the imperfections in the other lines.

A friend introduced me to the Maplelea company through their outfits. I love the creativity, the diverse colors, the quality with attention to details which is something bigger companies have started to discard as they turned their aim to "production and fast cash". I bought several outfits since then, thrilled by what Maplelea has to offer; though I don't own a Maplelea at the moment. My American Girl dolls (which makes the most of my doll collection) and "I'm a Girly doll" are the ones wearing these outfits. I love all my dolls and find them gorgeous, so I guess we are all first attracted to what we are exposed the most. This being said, at 1st I was not too sure if I'd like to add a Maplelea doll to my collection. Being used to the AG eyes, that was the feature that made me hesitate to get a Maplelea doll. But as I looked at the catalog and website for my next outfits/accessories order; I kept seeing the dolls as well. I also got exposed to pics taken by people and I got very attached to Briane and Saila. I can relate to Briane a lot and I'm really considering having her as her personality, what she does and love remind me of myself. Just wish she had light golden brown hair 😉 In the Maplelea & Me line, I really like: 68, 51, 47, 46, 43, 41. I don't really have space for more dolls but I will have to work out something as I don't think I'll be able to resist much longer 😄 Now, my dilemma will be to choose between Briane or a Maplelea & Me. I'm gonna wait to see the upcoming Maplelea & Me that will be available in November.

I just found out about these dolls, I'm American and have two AG dolls I bought as an adult. The person on the doll group who told me about them, confirmed that the outfits fit AG dolls, but shoes are hit and miss. My MiL has two dolls as well now (she has wanted for ages, but only had the one kid, my husband and he wasn't interested). She IMMEDIATELY went and bought the Scottish dancing outfit when I told her about it. She does that herself and was in the process of making one of her dolls an outfit. I'm...rather interested in all the snowsports outfits, and the other traditional outfits. I'm excited to find this company, though I don't think I'll get a doll, the faces do look a little weird to me but I think that's because I'm used to AG and I didn't see these as a kid.

This was really interesting. I like how the dolls' characters revolve around their locations, and how their stories are educational as well as entertaining. I think they have some gorgeous outfits and accessories. Just curious, if I look for a doll secondhand, is there anything special I should watch for? Any particular flaws I should be aware of? And would you say their clothes are generally interchangeable with AG?

    • @justdreamstudios
      @justdreamstudios  Рік тому +2

Clothes for the most part fit AG really well. The only things that are iffy are the leggings and shoes. Shoes will fit on american girl dolls but sometimes it looks a little awkward

I agree with you mostly and this was honestly a fascinating video! However, I feel like the reason many people think they are copying with the Friends line (11:26) is because 1. The mainline dolls have unique characters and focus on specific cultures, just like AG! 2. They are both 18 inch dolls. So Since they’re already quite similar due to the base concept (though obviously not identical), I think people see having pretty much the exact same concept (with the Friends and Truly Me line) as the “final straw” and therefore call them a copy, hope this makes sense!

  • @dakotatwilight

I have seen some pictures of them and have to say, the same as American Girl dolls and other brands the photography (stock photos) often does all the dolls a huge disservice they are just not taken at the correct angles to bring out the beauty of the dolls.
To be honest I would never have bought an an AG doll from the catalogue photos until I had these dolls in my hands and worked with them. So based on the stock photos I was not interested in the past but if I had one in my hands it might be a totally different story.
Having seen both Saile and Alexis in videos being played with/interacted with peaked my interest. I am interested in Saile though she is on backorder. For me every doll purchase has to be planned out. So they are on the backburner at the moment.
It doesn't mean that if I come across them in a thrift store I would pass them up. Example: I have a Madame Alexander friends doll who is Asian I grabbed secondhand even though this doll lines hair is atrocious (tangles, breaks and falls out, though very soft. This is the more expensive version of the Wal-Mart MA dolls)

The MapleLea dolls are interesting, but the basic face mold is so creepy with that huge rictus grin it’s almost demonic to me 😵‍💫 I like all the MapleLea dolls that have another face mold, like Charlsea, Leonie and Saila. They’re on my wish list. I did get Leonie a couple of years ago, because I grew up in QC. I need to get more of their outfits, and hopefully I can get the other two dolls I want soon. The quality is excellent. And yes I don’t like the AG classic mold either, I find it has a piggy nose and the face-ups are boring. The teeth are a bit funny, but they never really bothered me. My fave AG molds are Josefina, Joss and Claudie. I only have two AG Classics; JLY24 who is my mini-me, and Saige. I do want to get Tenney at one point. But yeah I limit the Classic molds in my collection, in favor of the molds I like better.

The idea of an American claiming Canada doesn't have a culture is like a Scot complaining that France doesn't have good wine.
However...having discovered both AG and Maplelea around 6 months ago, I gotta say that....these things are ugly as sin. Just strait up unappealing to look at. They look more realistic, yeah...but if I wanted realism I'm collect portraits, not dolls. It just makes then uncanny. They look unhinged. And it's a shame because other than that, I like their aesthetic a lot better that AG. I like the cute little buck teeth, but they just look so bland a lot of the time. These on the other hand look like an actual bunch of kids.
But the faces, man. The faces haunt me.
