Choosing a first American Girl doll is connected to the age and preferences of the recipient. The curlier hair takes more patience and experience to manage. Shorter straight hair is better for younger children. Some children like to play with hair and would do well with longer straight hair or hair with looser, minimal curls.
I purchased Josefina as an adult when I was learning about the history of the southwest. I have a 58 because I became interested in black history and she works well with both Addy and Claudie’s clothes and accessories.

The neck stamps are copyright information for the design of the head molds. Kaya was created under Pleasant Company. She took 5 years to create. Although she was not released until 2002, she was copyrighted as she was developed.
Kit was released in 2000 and also designed under Pleasant Company.
The neck stamps did not change until the copyright was renewed. The copyright applied to both the face mold and the vinyl color, so the neck stamp does not determine the age of the doll as being before 2000.
Another way to tell a pre-2000 doll is if they have a body tag or not. The pre-2000 dolls do not have body tags.

Pleasant Company was founded in 1986 (not 1989-the adult collectors just cringed!) with the release of Molly, Samantha and Kirsten. They all started with white bodies. The bodies were changed to the vinyl tone with the release of Felicity in 1991. She was a bit racy in her clothing!
The remaining Pleasant Company historical dolls were Addy released in 1993 and Josefina in 1997. Josefina was the first doll without the classic face mold and with multiple line eyebrows.
The American Girl of Today line was introduced in 1995. There were 20 dolls. Dolls after the number 20 were released after 2000.
Mattel purchased Pleasant Company in 1998 with Pleasant Rowland remaining president until 2000 as the brand transitioned to the name to “American Girl” and completed the designs started by Pleasant Company.

@@tocasmiley360 Yes! I have Josefina. And yes, Addy was the second face mold.

@@tocasmiley360 The Addy mold is my 2nd favorite! (After Josifina, ofc!) But the Addy prototype revealed she was originally designed with the classic mold!! And so was Kaya. I'm so glad Kaya got her own mold because the classic mold was NOT for her, and same with Addy!

You literally said (which is true) that addy was released in 1993 and Josefina was released in 1997 yes addys *prototype* was the classic mold but she was the first doll without it check the wiki.@@TrobertABQ

How could Josefina be the first doll without the classic mold if she was released 4 years after addy?

I have caroline and felicity both found while thrifting. I honestly prefer walmarts brand of 18"dolls "my life as" i love the ag hystorical dolls so i want some or all of those but when it comes to contemporary 18" dolls i like "my life as" dolls

I remember when I got my first AG doll in the late 2000s 3:46 NO ONE in Canada knew about them: we didn’t even have 18 inch dolls in general really. Maplelea existed, but again weren’t well known yet. I had to order directly off the website and pay a ton of import taxes. It was a huuuuge deal/decision to get one

Also: I agree with both points about the jly line. Originally they were girl of today and the message was to encourage girls to think about how modern day will be a part of history too, but somewhere along the line they noticed girls wanted dolls that looked like them and leaned into that with their marketing

I'm so sad that I cannot order any of Molly's accessories... I live in Canada.

I do not know why Logan has the PC face mold! The face mold stamps have mostly changed when the copyright was updated.

      @TrobertABQ 7 місяців тому

The CYO program became available online and in the flagship stores on August 8, 2017. (Wiki). The CYO program became a new way to create a doll by choosing the face mold and vinyl tone, hair style and color, eye color, and other options like freckles, glasses, and hearing aids. So basically, if the Truly Me line doesn’t have what you are looking for, you can create your own!
