"Pinnochio explains all the fish ate off his donkey skin".
So I guess Pinnochio wasn't really "turned into" a donkey in the original version, but was instead wearing some kind of donkey meat suit? That's . . . rather horrific.

    • @nousukas

Maybe all the kids were just covered with a donkey "suit", so they can be smuggled more easily... Thats a dark twist to the story.

Technically the art did depict him with donkey ears. No suit. The Italian live action did this by giving him wooden donkey ears as possible reference to this.

I mean, the entire story is an allegory, it goes pretty hard on kids who lie, cheat, steal or just consume things they really shouldn't... even as a kid I viewed "turned into a donkey" thing as an metaphor for children who ended up on the bottom of society, either by the way they were brought up (i.e. having no parents, or families with criminal history, or just poverty), or by choice (working class or even middle class kids getting into substance abuse and hanging out with a "wrong crowd"), no?

It's fairy tale logic. It doesn't really register as much because it's more recent, but Pinocchio is very much cut from the same cloth as something like Sleeping Beauty.

MatPat already did a theory covering whether selling the boys as donkeys was financially feasible in order to keep Pleasure Island operating and as it turns out, selling donkeys back then was shockingly lucrative, so yes, actually, this is possible, or at least it was back then.

The Three Black Rabbits of Death are Italian folk characters that are meant to represent the mysterious nature of death.
As in death is something which occurs naturally all around us/something everyone alive is familiar with but that we’ll never be able to fully understand it because while still alive.
That’s why they’re usually shown as human sized and bipedal. The idea is that the true nature of death itself is both familiar and obscure to us.
This is also why “large rabbit’s killing people” is something that shows up a lot in medieval drawings

That's how voice acting works; a person can only alter their voice so much and they only have so much range, especially if you're familiar with their work. Listen to any character voiced by Tom Kenny for example. Unless he does something radically different, like Eduardo from Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, you will inevitably hear hints of SpongeBob in whatever other character he's voicing. And to be honest, I think Cam really did show off his range in these Goodtimes films; I didn't really realize that it was him voicing the Wolf and the Cat and had to listen very carefully to notice it.

Actually, the Steve Barron adaptation, The Adventures of Pinocchio, did follow up on the Candlewick story (or Lampwick as he was renamed in that version). At the end of the movie, he and the other boys are shown to have turned back into boys offscreen. With Jimini Cricket (named Pepe in this version) narrating off handedly that all the other boys also turned back into boys. It was a very "Oh and by the way, this happened" type of moment.
