Brian and Kazza, congratulations your recent decision to hand build Delo 2.0 yourselves. I'm a boilermaker located not far from Dan's workshop. I've being watching you guys for over 10 years now, every Friday or Saturday, waiting eagerly for the next svdelos upload. You guys inspire me so much, to keep pushing on, trying to keep dreams alive. Even when Brian replies to a question or comment I've made, lifts me for days afterwards. I would like to offer my labour and skillset voluntarily should the boat be built nearby between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Hit me up. So excited for you guys

My favorite thing about sailing youtube is the videos oscillate from 90% sailing 10% DIY to 10% sailing and 90% diy every few years then back again, and we're finally at the stage in that cycle and I'm excited to see it documented from the delos family view.

Unfortunately he is now in poor health and can no longer operate a boat of either variety alone. He LOVES your videos, and now he is SO EXCITED TO BE PART OF THE BUILDING EXPERIENCE!! I would like to say go for a 65-75 foot boat. Just to incorporate a workshop and additional bunk space. Although it is small now, your family will grow (look for min 4 cabins and a kitchen). The longer length can make the pontoons wider and more space for bunking and wash-places and storage; while still getting some speed from the hulls. The hull looks very narrow in the video, get something 3-4 feet wider. Have to remember that 4 -6 inches will be insulation. (check out nauti-styles boat build in turkey, who have a great video on the inside construction and isolated bulkhead to prevent noise from cabins). The greater the underwater volume of your 2 hulls the better your (Center of gravity, and MG) which can make the boat more stable.
For water tanks think at least 1.5m3 or 2 m3 tanks. For fuel tanks think double of Delos is now.
Black water system (toilets) with a holding and treatment tank.
Grey water tank (dishwasher, showers, sinks), with holding tanks. Black water and grey water tanks help in marine restricted places.
Double your freezer space and fridge space.
Compartmentalize your AC spaces. Best AC goes into the bedrooms (lowest temp), next your inside rooms (not as low as your bedrooms). You don't always have to run ac down to 20C, you can sleep at 22 to 24 AC, if the weather outside is over 30C.
Whatever your design plan for 2-3 days at anchor for a battery bank, meaning you might need to put alot of batteries onboard for your electrical load. Put all the luxury items in too (freezers, fridges, ice makers and AC units, shop equipment or anything else).
Look at the hulls being 1/3 height for tanks (water, waste tanks black, grey, fuel). The other 2/3 heights is for bedrooms etc. Look at 8Ft for bedroom height and 8.5-9 feet for the big cabin. If you can get higher head room in the interior.
The biggest mistake most people make is cutting cost by limiting the expansion factor. If you want to add things in the future ;you must leave space and put in the electrical, when the boat is constructed. If you are finding the space cramped, make it bigger.
That keel length looks very small, maybe go 15-20 feet keel. Also ask about a winged keel, which could give you more lift the faster you go in the water.
    Watertight compartments-
As a rule you might look at no holes in the watertight bulkheads below the water line (or waterline +1 foot). For piping the piping can be welded. Cabling is harder to make watertight, you need to check into that.
At least 4 -5 WT compartment per hull depending on the length of boat. For instance at the front of hull one bulkhead at 7-10 feet (storage locker), the second one at 14-20 feet (workshop or dive locker with dive compressor/backup diesel generator). Thicker aluminum at the front for reinforced bow for ice/logs etc.
Biggest concern is that you need to sail a fwd helm and see how you like it (with minimum help), especially in inclement weather. Is there a area to dry off when you go out side and how do you tie on for safety in large waves/seas.

You make it sound like they’re new to sailing. They know more about sailing and what is required in a boat than you could even dream of. I think it’s embarrassing for you to be offering advice to such seasoned sailors. It’s like you telling the Formula 1 champion how to build a race car.

    • @wallyschmidt4063
      @wallyschmidt4063 5 місяців тому +2

@@teeanahera8949 Just because you can sail, does not mean you can design. Same goes for Formula 1 drivers, they don't design their own cars, engineers do. Building from Aluminum adds weight to the boat. To hold that weight up the hull needs to displace more than the weight of the aluminum + everything else. To get speed you need a L to Width ratio over 8:1. To get sound proofing on the hulls (from water) you need to insulate 3-4", so a total of 6 to 8" inches off the internal volume of a hull. You want a decent size bedroom in the hull, therefore it must be wider. Therefore to maintain speed the hull must be longer. You want to go into artic waters The temp is 0.6 C. that is cold. And you are going to need more insulation. Look up heat conduction formula. The thicker the walls the less heat is transfered from the boat to the water. There is always give and take when designing things....

@@emanuelehgartner6800 it’s amazing that every pro welder was just born that way, no 16 year old apprentices ever became a great welder.
First year apprentices work on aluminium boats all the time, not every weld needs a master welder, but they need to be checked by a master welder. Give em a few months welding bits and pieces under the supervision of a pro welder and they will quickly come up to speed.

We've never met, and while I know it's weird, I've come to think of you as friends over the years. I'm very excited for you, and really looking forward to watching you build what looks like it will be a spectacular exploration/cruising vessel! Im sure it feels a bit overwhelming right now, (I've been sailing all my life and working in the boat business for some of it, and I'd certainly be feeling overwhelmed!), but having watched you for years take an even, analytical approach to investigating and solving all sorts of problems on Delos, I can think of nobody whose ability to learn and implement new information and new skills I would have more confidence in than you guys.
I'm also excited for Sierra. She's clearly a bright, loving, and cheerful child, and it's been great fun watching you two introduce her to the adventure in your own lives and the natural wonderland you all have the privilege of being immersed in, but I have to admit that in addition to admiring your ability to make her feel cared for, engage her in your travels, and show her how to be adaptable and appreciative, as the parent of a grown daughter, I've sometimes wondered a little bit about how much she might miss the socialization of going to school and living with a steady group of other children. It seems like your decision to take on this project couldn't come at a better time for her, and hopefully she'll gain a group of new friends, get introduced to life ashore and either learn to appreciate at much greater depth the life she's had up 'til now, or gain the tools to take a different path if she chooses to. Bravo Mama & Papa, and best of luck with your new adventure - can't wait to see how it goes!!!

What a fantastically designed vessel. As catamaran owners (Antares 44), we can appreciate the “upgrade” this vessel provides, from the forward cockpit and solid hulls to the running gear. AND you get to build exactly what you want. You’ll know the boat and systems inside and out. I really hope the size and scope of this project won’t overwhelm you. We simply wouldn’t have the patience or bandwidth to undertake something like this, despite the overwhelming sense of accomplishment once crossing the finish line. Good for you! Wishing you luck, and we look forward to following your progress over the years to come.

I hate making long comments, so I'll keep it simple. My thoughts on the whole plan would be to JUST DO IT! I mean, I watched you all for years and went back and watched all the other videos from the past leaning along the way (my next step BTW would be to get on a boat and do it with IRL training) . I think it would be a great show, kind of like the old show "This old house" where we can watch you build and learn things along the way. We already saw so much sailing knowledge, maybe it would be a great change. You could also always go out and sail for a week or two if things get dry. Patrons could have a bigger list of things to watch and interact with as well. And really important, the family can get land life back in, including Sierra growing up and going to school etc... Good luck! I as a viewer am happy to be along this new journey. I know for one it's going to be a little different not watching the relaxing sails, but we all need to do new things and not be stuck in the past.

Be aware from a voice of experience on such a project. You cannot see or imagine how slow things will go when you start getting into systems, wiring, interior details. You must be prepared for it to take much longer than you anticipate. I advise looking into hiring as much help as you can possibly afford to help with the stuff that goes so slow. It can get very frustrating when you spend weeks and weeks of hard labor but cannot really see much in the way of progress. It takes a high degree of patience and determination. Good luck with it as it sure looks like an exciting project! Try to get up off the floor when ever you can!

Hello guys, so happy for you. You can do it! We had similar experience in the late 1970s but with choosing and building an airplane. The design was a totally new design and the construction was also new. We learned as we built and six years later we flew a totally new type of aircraft. If we could do it you can too. My build problem was burn out. We would build for a month or so and then do our water sports and camping. The stats on completing a large project from start to finish is not promising but you have to focus on the reward at the end. Before the plane I helped build a 60’ shrimp boat so I had learned to visualize the end. Stay focused and when your head starts getting fuzzy then take a break for a while. Have fun at it and don’t make it into a job. Keep Looking Up!

I noticed that the first hull showed some serious consideration of the potential issues. One thing I noticed was that all of the deck cleats had been welded onto the hull. It would be great if you covered the strategies employed in the design to prevent, identify and repair corrosion.

I'd love to see build content on the design process (ship design and interior) and how you go about finding, ordering, etc. everything from scratch since many of the sailing channels that have recently done a boat build have gone with a company that takes care of a lot of those details and they didn't go into much of the actual decision making process since there's sooooo much to plan and choose!

I'm hoping they stick to the ketch rig ..it makes the design more stable and safer under a wider range of conditions. It also reduces the size of the sails that need handling.

My typing ..what I should have said was Elcie was the first in terms of the DeVilliers designs and that Was what Brian had seen . They actually say on their site they were not the first to build either the forward cockpit or in alloy .. what Elsie did do on top that was unusual was use the Ketch rig.. again not unknown on cats but rare .. I follow Wilding sailing and he's working on restoring and finishing a Wharram Pahi 42... but previously he and his former
Partner restored and sailed an early GRP Comanche cat with the ketch rig..and it works well for a solo sailing couple.
DeVilliers put all the elements together in the one package.
As soon as I saw the two u tube videos of Elsie it resonated with my own ideals I also liked the strengths of design overall.
I'm an interdisciplinary Environmental scientists with a life time interest in designing, making and messing about with stuff... Sustainable transport and homes being two, my research into the light wt Maine cats the Pioneering Deepblue Rapier 550 almost a decade ago took the internal helm single handed fast cruising boat
to a level that still sets the template. As does it's emergency or sporting tiller helm positions. It's internal space is huge and light with opening roof windows and windows all round.. the semi computer controlled central mast station is akin to a mid engine design behind the recaro seats of the captains steering wheel .. the reactionary response of the time from what I sometimes describe as the skin cancer, heat stroke and hypothermia and exhaustion squadrons or floating Gin palaces . Do not appeal to me. GRP and Carbon fiber are not very good materials to build with .. from a ecological survivability standpoint... but that and my Geology training drew me to Basalt flax, hemp, jute, bamboo and chemically engineered modified fast soft woods that can last 80 plus years untreated...and be superior to Al or steel in some cases. Basalt for the hull led me to the Windelo electric hybrids but their novel interpretation of the internal forward helm but immediately aft of the main mast .. I would still prefer to see a sliding or folding rigid forward access door rather than a roll up Flexi glazing panel for rough conditions...but overall it is an extremely good design on multiple levels. Especially given the problems of traditional designs and materials.
In short good designs are largely evolved from multiple sources. .. and happyness based on experience and individual priorities.
I can aesthetically appreciate a J class Classic Yatchs but I wouldn't want to live on one. 🧙🏼‍♂️😉 and no explorer live aboard cat shouldn't be able to go ashore, dry out on a sandy beach or mud flat.

It's understandable; they're really different things: building a boat vs sailing one. Sailing for me is a great way to commune with nature and get away from electronic/computer technology for the most part. I can see how if one were a mechanical engineer, for example, one might want to get away from building hardware via the escape that is sailing.
That said, I can see their interest in wanting to build to learn more about it. Brian is an engineer who's presumably never built a boat before. So the building side is unexplored territory and therefore interesting for him.
Not sure if you can get them in the U.K., but Salonpas patches helped arthritis here. They basically have the exact same active ingredients as Chinese Gung Fu oil called: White Flower External Analgesic Balm Oil: Camphor, Menthol (mint), Methyl Salicylate

I agree. Building and sailing are totally different types of channels. Their hope is that people are invested enough in them personally to watch regardless of what they do. I’m sure they’ll keep most of their subs and gain even more, but I’m with you, I watch sailing videos to see people sail to exotic places and to fantasize about going there myself one day. I’m guessing they are putting Sierra into a traditional school for a few years, which is why they chose to take on this extremely time consuming project.

Though I enjoy sailing, my true interest lies in boat design and construction. Before starting to follow cruisers on UA-cam my passion was reading about the lives of 19th-century sailors and boat builders. And the opportunity to watch real boats come to life on UA-cam has been incredible. I've followed Leo at Sampson Boat Company and Steve at Acorn to Arabella since their channel's inception. What a ride! And when MJ Sailing started its fiberglass boat-building adventure it opened my eyes to the challenges of building a modern fiberglass boat. Hopefully you’ll have professional help with ships systems: electrics, inc. navigation integration, inc. steering-autopilots, battery & solar, interior woodworking, all the fabric & finishing work, galley & head design & execution. And then the engine issue. Hybrid like HH is my recommendation. Huge amount of work. 2 full years realistically. Of endless & often soul breaking work. I won’t lie. I had done three circumnavigations when I was hospitalized with a major back surgery and, having been a computer scientist & geodetic engineer, I ran across you in Episode 3? From Mexico to the Marquesas and thought, what are these two yahoos doing. I was familiar with Amel and sailed Swans for my fist two round the worlds and then an Oyster 595. I’ve been a delivery skipper for Gunboat before they moved to France so I’m familiar with fast cats. Like the idea of an aluminum or carbon fast cruising cat. I’ve stayed true to my monohull love and have a Garcia Exploration 60 on order. Never quite took to the sailing by the numbers on cats. I’m 76 and have sailed 280,000 miles - most with my late wife & kids. Now being crewed by grandkids and upon delivery I’m heading through the Northwest Passage and along the Aleutians to Japan, and eventually heading to a few years in Chile, Argentina and the Antarctic. Best of luck. I get the feeling you want another child and raising kids and self schooling is sure a lot easier today. SSB days and the internet didn’t exist. Can I suggest that you take a look at the precision involved in building a quality alloy boat on the “sailing into freedom” channel. Peter is an Australian Engineer who is building a similar vessel in Vietnam. The labour costs are much lower there than in Australia but a lot of them have been trained in the big Australian shipyards which build Aluminium Ferries that run between Tasmania and Victoria. Anyhow if look past Peter’s over the top larrikins style you will see just how high quality the work is coming out of this yard. All the shell panels are English wheel rolled to get perfect hull profiles. All the buttons welds are continuous (they use scrap material to continue welds 3 inches past the end of the panels to prevent future cracking)
If you were to use a yard like this with your design it would be done in 3 months and you probably won’t spend any more.

Their boat building adventure isn’t the hedonistic expression of two trust fund kitties, it’s a mom, dad and their baby who have opened up their lives and is the extension of that decade plus of experience that we have all enjoyed watching. I’m grateful for that and can’t wait to see this next adventure. We’ll get to see how an engine room will be laid out that doesn’t destroy your knuckles, where the best manta rays are breeding, how the trade winds are changing, and along for the ride we see a little girl growing up, a dad and mom navigate parenthood, a story of the world unfold through their eyes. They are a window outside of our own little worlds. I personally have zero interest in building a boat/ sailing around the world especially with a little one, but we get to see the world through the eyes of two reasonable and kind people, which is immensely valuable and unique.

@@Longpathwisdom lol I’ve been watching Delos since their Australia days. I fully understand that the production of this channel is hard work. No doubt about it.
The person i replied to suggested they felt bad they can’t afford to contribute, which is ridiculous.
They are making what most people in the western world would refer to as a “shitload” of money. To even consider building this boat is out of reach for 99.99% of the world. They have made millions of dollars from this channel. I reckon they’re making close to 50k USD per month when you account for ad revenue, patreon, merch, and sponsorships. Let alone the fact that a lot of their boat systems were given to them for a shoutout.
I’m a huge fan of this channel, especially the earlier days. But to feel bad about not being able to afford to help pay for rich people’s brand new 50ft aluminum sailing catamaran as a pensioner is WILD.
You mentioned you don’t have an interest in cruising. Talk to some cruisers who don’t vlog. I promise they’ll almost unanimously agree with my perspective.

Holy heck guys!! Sailor Barry here! I have followed along almost the whole time! And got most excited when you first started talking about 2.0. And here we are!!! So stoked. Feels so right.
I’ve followed in your footsteps and am now a full time Liveaboard, have a YT show of my own and the first year has been so successful I am almost full time! And hope to be a 10th as successful as yall in the years to come.
This year I’m embarking on a new build 10 foot aluminum tender with a sponsor and it’s thrilling. I can only imagine on such a large scale how you must feel.
I am a shipwright and if you guys ever need a hand, I’d love to come help for a few weeks! Cheers!!!!
    Sailor Barry.

BandK, this is an amazing decision. You guys have always been a beacon for knowledge and entertainment. I can't wait to see both of you building Delos II, learning boat fabrication, and watching the whole process. I had to give up sailing for a good reason - two amazing kids - but I am still able to live that dream through your very well-executed storytelling, adventure, and educational videos. I have been watching from Episode 1, and I've laughed with you all, cried with you all, and learned an immense amount of things just by watching you all sail. This is amazing news and the best next chapter for you all and us as well. I can't wait for the next season.

The excitement of a new project can wear off, especially when the project is 2-4 years long. What started as joy can become unbearable as years drag on and on. I don't know if it is affordable but if you could hire another local welder or two it would speed things up and keep the process exciting. Also, progress is always good for UA-cam success. Ok and BTW, so excited for all of you!

The exciting thing about this aluminum design is in the future this boat will likely be 3d printed, like a rocket. 🚀

I’ve been looking at cats for a while before I got one; there’s at least 2 major flaws with this design that you should consider.
    1. The open, exposed forward cockpit means you’re going to get absolutely SOAKED with salt showers when at sea. Not fun.
    2. The single helm inside the boat is cool, but limits visibility when docking and maneuvering.
I’d consider ways to minimize these things.

  • @davidlewin1736

The short answer I’m afraid is NO!
Not because you don’t have the skills at present but because trying to do it alone will blight you and your family’s lives. The project is just too big if you want anything else in your life. Remember building the hull is only a third of the boat. Get someone else to do that and then think about fitting it out yourself. I’ve seen too many burnt out dreams sitting in the back of boat yards. Think how long it has taken Salt and Tar to build a small boat. Please accept some help to build your next dream!
