Howdy Delos! I retired today and my search for a boat begins soon! I’ll be visiting Puerto Peñasco and Puerto Vallarta in my initial search. My children will be helping with the search! Can’t wait to see how your build progresses!
    Fair winds and following seas!

Great for you both, fantastic for Sierra to be around two more amazing adults enriching her life experiences. Well done Delos and VA. Cheers and fair winds

I feel like I met you guys during covid by binge watching past episodes. You were living the sailing life while I was building my 4x4 land yacht. I did solar and lithium power so close to your conversion that we both have been living off grid the same amount of time. Congrats on your next adventure to build an aluminum Cat! I look forward to seeing your build progress. Cheers from AZ desert. I get to escape to a wonderful water adventure with every episode. Thanks!

When running deep we run a 3rd wide sheet for the Genoa aft and down to the toe rail. It keeps the sail full and away from the spreader. You can do the same with a barber haul or tweaker. Some cats run another sheet from the Genoa clew forward to the bow to really brace it. Can't wait to see your new boat.

You have spent a lot of years on a monohull and now that Sierra is here, the space will be so wonderful and like you said you don’t have to step down into the cabin anymore as you will be living on top with beautiful surrounding views. I don't know much about sailing but i have followed you guys for a few years now. All i can say is. If you can afford it, get a catamaran. Its alot more spacious and stable. And with the little one growing up, you can definitly use the space. Also..... From the bottom of my heart i wish to thank you for your videos Brian, Kazza and Sierra! I found your channel when covid just started and your weekly video's (especially around the "Two Titty Yaught club) actually helped me get through the lonely times that were covid for alot of people (myself included). I'm glad that you three had such a good time on VA with friends. Sierra's going to make a great sailor one day! I think that you'll love having your own cataraman. You probably already have considered the negative aspects of aluminum (or "aluminium" as the Brits say it!), however, Brian: #1. Because it doesn't flow through those waves like a monohull, it can be noisier as it slams into the waves. #2. Corrosion will be a problem; you'll have to figure out just how to use a more reactive metal (like zinc) as a sacrificial anode -- and that's going to require constant attention. #3. Metal fatique will be a danger: aluminum doesn't flex well at all (a minimum deformation limit) so will eventually break. #4. It won't just be difficult, but more expensive, to put on some kind of antifouling agent on aluminum -- it's easier to do on fiberglass. Good luck! And I look forward to following you into your sailing future! 👍🤟🏻

  • @glennburch1081
    @glennburch1081 2 місяці тому +3

I guess if u r a sailing traditionalist and your priority is in the feeling a monohull gives you as you are heeling over and cutting thru the waves, then your new boat will be a monohull. The cataraman seems to have more pluses than minuses in the comparison of the two. For a family with a Sierra, I would think you would be leaning toward a cataraman which, foot for foot, would be a more expensive boat. Can't wait until you reveal which direction you go and then decide on the boat and introduce her to everybody......... gonna be fun! Thanks for allowing us to tag along. BTW, you seem to keep great friends..... Warren and Erica were delightful!

I smiled when you said sweet downwind non-Rollie sailing. The advancement of technology I am the last generation that knows how to double clutch a Porsche and they gave me a big smile when you mentioned downward sailing rolling because I had forgotten that because I haven’t sailed in so many years. Riding the rollers between Saint Thomas and St. John up towards Yost Van Dyke are as much fun if you’re good at and love the art of canceling rolling as can be had. The fetch is 400 miles. Through a four mile gap. On an average day they’re 12 feet. I’ve also sailed an Amel. I took a shift headed east from the USVs to St Martin. I don’t know it would behave downwind. Pointing and reaching I found it to be sluggish and a big rocking horse compared to my Beneteau. I don’t know whether while surfing that would inure to your benefit. Or not. My takeaway from my 12 hour passage was that if I were going to live on a sailboat it would be an Amel. Even if I needed a crew member.

I find it amazing that all these ships were built in one part of the world or another and then go on these enormous journey's with relatively little technology reltatively routinely. Amazng stories. Considering the age of that wreck it's in really good condition! Be careful talking to people in air pockets - they're usually from exhaled air from divers but as the ships rust/decay they can use up the oxygen in them, if the mixture is hypoxic oxygen will actively diffuse the opposite way through your lungs and youi'll very quickly black out...

Hi Brian. Thank you for all you guys do and share! I'm very excited to see your Delos 2.0 boat build details. I'm an engineer who know nothing about boats, but I had a thought regarding the wave slapping issue on the flat connection between the two hulls. The force of the wave slap that translates into the jolt and noise is going to be a function of the speed of the wave contact and the surface area the wave hits all at once. If this connection was an arch instead of a flat surface, as the wave rises, the contact would happen over a longer time and the final crown of the arch would be a much smaller surface area which should result in a much smaller jolt and noise. Even if the hull is already built with a flat connection, I am thinking a "false" hull arch could still provide a large improvement in the wave slapping issue. Maybe this is obvious and something you already considered. Best wishes.

People who do not use compressed air to dive to depths greater than 66 feet (scuba diving) do not understand the issues of nitrogen saturation and the limited time that a human can dwell at various depths. Planned dives are critical!
Overall, this is one of your better videos. Which is saying a LOT!

Just a little google about one from my backyard ;-)
The iron barque Nordby with skipper H. Christiansen was in the archipelago of the Company Islands in French Polynesia, where on 20 August 1900 it sailed from Tahiti 200 km to the northwest to the coral island of Raiatea, to complete the cargo of 120 tons of copra destined for Liverpool.
The next morning the ship arrived off the inlet to Raiatea, where a pilot's flag was hoisted, but no pilot came out and after some waiting the ship nevertheless sailed in through the passage and went to anchor. Ballast was thrown out under a stiff east-southeasterly storm and current, whereby the ship, however, drifted and ran aground on a coral reef.
From the following day, every effort was made to bring the ship afloat, to which part of the crew from a French warship contributed, but when the ship slipped from the reef on 26 August, it sank in deep water, whereby both ship and cargo were lost.
The wreck was sold for 420 francs.

Really interesting - keep thinking about this as an approach, so I'm glad you're trying it out for me! I do aspire to a Dazcat!

The snorkling looks out of this world, thank you for filming it for us to see. Have y'all done any sailing in the Baltic Sea? I plan to sail there one day and visit some of the cool looking lighthouses.

I've been watching for a few years and love you guys. I've learned a lot and it has helped me many times on our 30' sailboat.. this episode was epic and what a massive step. A new boat and an aluminum cat!!! How exciting. You guys deserve all the blessings 🙏. Can't wait to see the new girl. What are you naming her?? delos 2.0?

I was sailing a 37' Hunter. After 6 years of cruising half the world, I decided to get a bigger boat (new family needed room). I decided this on our first sail with our baby boy from Tonga to Fiji. I talked to the cat owners in the Fiji marina (Vuda Point I believe) and I decided to stick with monohulls. The thought of sailing up wind in a cat just didn't sit well with me. Sure, most cruising is downwind but I did a lot of upwind sailing in my years. I found a Whitby 55 that has just as much room as a 45' cat but a 3rd of the price of a used cat. I have to say I am very happy with my decision.
During my cruising all saw all kinds of boats out there that most would say shouldn't be out there. I think it really is about the sailor and not the boat, but, I do have a question for Delos captain: would you feel as safe on your new cat (pretty big one) in the same conditions you experienced in the south Indian Ocean 8 to 10 years ago as you did on your Amell? I remember watching that video when we were looking for a new boat.

The other thing that I was nervous about was how you have to react to squalls before they hit on a cat. On a monohull, the boat tells you when you need to make a change. On a cat, if you wait for the boat to tell you, it may be too late. I was used to single handling which mean I wasn't always watching the weather. Although I would sleep in the cockpit with my alarms on, the squalls did sneak up on me often.

Very nice, sailing experiences are again back after all those sweet family & kid oriented movies.
That, and more technical, building and nautical realities to come, I hope.
    Looking forward to it. ⚓⛵

My biggest issue with a cat is the righting-moment. And there is much more stress on the catamaran rigging than there is on a mono. BUT!! You can't beat the living conditions on a cat, and the shallower draft is a plus too.
