- I got stuck in a winter storm. Luckily I was living in a Four Wheel Camper Hawk AEV Prospector truck camper setup which allowed me to do some winter off roading, some winter camping, some snowboarding, and of course some van life! Watch as I show you just how easy it is to turn this ideal off roading rig into a comfortable pop up camper that keeps you warm and safe after a long day.

Nice Ram 3500! I'm a third owner of a trucking company where we use 50' enclosed trailers to deliver new and used exotic cars, along with other rare vehicles. We only pull these trailers with Ram 3500 dually pickup trucks with the mighty 6.7L Cummins. I just bought a new 2020 Ram 3500 Longhorn 4x4 Dually for myself. I love driving and traveling. Anyway, my newest and third driver other than myself, didn't have a truck, so he is now driving my previous 2018 Ram 3500 Big Horn 4x4 Dually. He loves it! My two other drivers are driving 2019 3500's. The 2018 has the highest miles, and is still running strong with no issues after 125k miles of pulling between 15-25,000 pounds! Just scheduled maintenance. The other two owners and all of their drivers all use Ram 3500's as well, and we all swear by them. Great trucks! I enjoyed your video. Thank you for posting it. Not many people where I come from get into adventurous things so I was an odd duck to them but I also trained to box and I was really good so I was an odd duck behind my back.
I sure do miss those days. I'm not too old to still do a lot of things I love like kayaking. I love to kayak more than anything but not white water. I like the ocean and Flat Water kayaking. You're a pretty good inspiration.
I spent three days on top of Mount Baker in Washington about a month ago in my Alaskan Camper/Dodge '05 RAM.
It snowed getting up there, the road had not been plowed and there was at least a foot and a half.
My rig went through it like a knife slicing butter. I didn't even need chains.
When I finally got to the top I just turned the heater on and slept.
The coziest three nights I've ever had.
I just have to say.... my girls a wimp and voted least adventurous. Go Dr. H! Don’t even know you but super proud of your zeal and enthusiasm. And btw.... No trucks are tougher than Ram trucks, period
Having lived on the western slope of Colorado I can only say this about back country driving in the snow...chains, chains, chains, chains....
They work on hard/icy surfaces they can bite into...on soft/mud/slushy roads they only dig you in place (get you stuck) faster.

@@billredding2000 Having lived 4 miles up a dirt road from the paved county road with a 2000 ft change in elevation, driving it at least twice a day for over 13 years I can say from my experience that wasn't the case. I pulled countless people out of the ditch in winter, spring and fall and having chains was the saving grace in every instance.
@@flyingdutchman7585 Well, then that's some good news. I guess the people who have had chains off-road and it didn't help were in snow that was too deep and their vehicle got high-centered (lifted up by the snow underneath) so the wheels could no longer "get down" and gain traction.
My personal experience is on paved roads in snow/ice where chains were a HUGE help...but in the future I'll be doing some off-roading/mountain passes/trails/forest-fire roads (in Colorado) in Winter (snow of varying depths both on & off road) with a Chevy Colorado ZR2, and although it comes with Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac® tires -- which should suffice MOST of the time -- will get some chains for it (just in case, and for all 4 wheels).

@@billredding2000 you're spot on, with chains you plow much further and eventually high center. You'll love having chains with the front and rear lockers of your ZR2. Our Rubicon just paddles up through deep powder locked and chained up in Montana. We have full chains, with "v-bar" cleats.
I live in North IDAHO, I have ‘03 & ‘04 dodge both TDC’s. I absolutely refuse to go in the woods if there’s more than 3 inches of snow. They’ll pull a house down, but they are HORRIBLE in the snow. Idk maybe it’s me or just the way these trucks are setup. To be honest I just them on the highway for towing.

Nice vid, also a suggestion, turn the Snorkel heaf filter the other way, facing backwards to avoid issues you may face as you are in Snow region . Have fun.

Crazy snow. Not their first rodeo, I have a feeling they know what their doing. However the safest side of the bumper would be in view of the driver on his side./ He needs to be able to see you while hes backing up. Glad you had a safe trip, great video.

4:00, there's at least 3 people there, driver, Hannah, and the camera person. Point being, all this is easier with 3 people. If people are thinking of doing it alone remember she's got 3 people (or more) with her.

I had a Jeep with four-wheel drive I found out the hard way that when the snow is really bad you need chains tire chains
Yep. A winch is pointless in deep snow. Buy Tire Chains first.
Jeep is a super light vehicle. This Cummins Ram is so f-ing heavy that those 37” mud tires just dig to the bottom and pull ya through the deep snow 😁... to a point of course.
I have a Jeep with 4WD and I found out the hard way it is better to stay home in front of the fire and drink a hot toddy
Deflate your tires to 8psi. This alone will usually get you unstuck, and you can safely run in the snow at this PSI without beadlocks. Regular tires at 8psi will perform better in snow than massive aggressive tires at 35 psi.

I was leaving Modesto north toward Sacramento, and a storm warning was issued. I had to go east over Donner to Reno, and POW! I got hit halfway up the pass. I chained up but it did not good. I was covered by 8 feet of snow in 6 hours and there was no moving at all. After the weekend, I was able to dig out and continue. That was the most snow I ever experienced in 6 hours, but I grew up where we would get 6 feet overnight. And we got so much snow several times that we walked right out of the 2nd floor bedroom windows several times, straight out in level snow. Shoveling... Took WEEKS. TRAVEL WAS IMPOSSIBLE until everything was cleared.

I know absolutely nothing about this kind of stuff, but It still looks like a lot of fun. My wife gave me an early valentines gift a couple weeks ago. What I got is a used 4WD 2018 F150 STX super crew. Who knows, after I learn some stuff I can take her on a cool adventure like this. We live in eastern NC so this kind of snow doesn't really happen here so it won't be this cool. Stay safe and keep having fun.

I drove from N.Dakota to Detroit in 33-hours during an insane winter storm in a 1981 Buick Skylark with studded front tires. I should have died. Yet here I am. I love your videos!

Also, maybe I'm weird, but I already hate 4 door short bed trucks. I'd want a 2 door long bed, which would give me a bigger camper... if I got a camper.
That beast of a truck had no problem in that 2 in of snow !
So how efficient is the camper in the winter? Are there insulator panels you can put up? You have at least one water tank (fresh). Any concerns about it freezing? Does the the heater keep your tank(s) warmer too?
4 wheel campers offer an additional layer of insulation as an option. I ordered it for mine, but it is a 3 season camper here on the border of Canada

Yeah, chains. Airing down reduces clearance and doesn’t improve traction in snow. Other than that, high spirits are essential!
I know... I'm like WHAT? Maybe they just did it for the "content", but snow like that you automatically put chains on.
And ya, it's SAND generally that you take air out of your tires, and/or if you have Summer Tires on, but they clearly already have off-roading/snow tires on, so deflating won't help, likely will make it worse.

Split boards originated in 1991. They're sort of a snowboarder's equivalent of randonee skis, but less versatile.

Tire chains will help when in deep powder and steep icy conditions. 4x4 and snow tires are fine but can only do so much. Add chains on front tires help or all 4 is amazing.
Yikes. Clearly very little experience with real snow here. Love your videos. I’m concerned other CA peeps will think it is easy or fun. Nothing here was particularly ‘tough’. Where the truck was stuck showed his inexperience with real snow. Truck tires are also I’ll suited. Just be careful when showing weather like this. It can kill. FYI - if plows came by before you got up there really was no real threat. Unless you live in LA. I mean then it could/would kill you.

I prefer to use a Full size SUV / van for this + side you don't have to get out of your rig in the weather but you don't have the extra weight of the camper on the rig my trucks are 4 wheel drive like yours as well

Dude, that is SWEET! Thanks for posting! On May 30th 2020, Self-isolating around Bend OR, a hail storm with 3 inch balls of ice came out of nowhere. 10 minutes later it was over, but it destroyed 2 power-vents and the AC cover, and the AC too. 2 hours later I was out on a mtn bike ride HAHAAA! Thankfully insurance will cover much of the cost.

Carry tire chains, tow chains/ straps, shovel, flares(melt ice) battery charger, jumper cables, and rock salt/ kitty litter.. Depending on the state, you may have to show that you have chains OR have them on your vehicle to enter the state..

Being an Aussie I’m not used to snow and can’t remember the last time I saw any. But, should I be driving in snow conditions, I’d have snow chains. Why weren’t you using chains on your tyres?
Hey there! Minnesota, USA, native here. You'd be surprised what you can actually get through with 4 wheel drive and a good set of tires. We had a storm up here last year and had snow up to my hip. It was probably around 3-4 feet tall if not more (91-122cm). I had a truck with 4 wheel drive and it didn't even slow me down. Just gotta learn to handle driving with less traction.

I have to laugh at most 4 x 4 enthusiasts, you can have a Boss Truck, but you are still limited in traction. Why don't you have chains on, and even then, four feet of wet snow will stop any vehicle.
Unless you have tracks, you can get stuck.
Snowboarding AWESOME! You should fit that rig with a personal weather station and internal tire inflation and deflation system.
