    You hit the nail on the head with the throttle response. I had had my heart set on a WRX for a long time, and spent months learning about them to the point I knew more than the salespeople at the dealer. I test drove a couple and had a blast in them, but the turbo lag is really noticeable.
    A buddy of mine bugged me to test drive a GTI for months while I was looking at the WRX, and when I finally did, my mind was made. I walked out with a 2017 GTI later that week.
    The GTI isn't the fastest car on the stable, but its power band just makes it a blast to drive. Still considering a WRX as my next car, but it may have to compete with the Golf R.

    The sound modifer that the GTI's have isn't really a speaker, it's a vibrator under the windshield cowl, when you punch it the thing starts spinning to make the windshield vibrate letting more engine noise in the cabin, does not use the Fender system for the fake sound.

    I have a 2017 wrx and I love it. I have a 12 mile 120 minute commute in bumper to bumper traffic every day. I got into an accident earlier this year which was a powerful head on collision. I ended up with a torn rotator cuff and 3 herniated discs but I lived (I was in a 2003 wrx) which saved my life. I'm thinking of getting a GTI for the comfort and quietness for my daily commute. • @tomdoe1234

    It's not so much that it's fake. Outside the car you'd be hearing that noise. It's just letting the noise from the engine get into the car through something called a soundaktor that is up near the wipers. In fact if you don't have it in sport mode then it's pretty much the real deal. I disconnected mine and it made no difference in normal mode, but when I put it in sport mode the sound doesn't get louder anymore.

    I have a GTI and want to get rid of it because lots of power in FWD sucks. Especially up north you can't use the power. If I am pulling out of a side street or if it's raining the wheels just spin and the car won't move. Even in a straight line on dry pavement in the winter going 20 to 30 mph I can light up the tires. I've even felt them breaking free straight line at almost 50.

    Power delivery is huge. My GTI is a much more fun car to drive than my WRX was. GTI has that near instant down low punch, the WRX needs to be wound out, and that sort of sucks in traffic and on crowded city streets.

    • @MeltingRubberZ28
      @MeltingRubberZ28 5 років тому

      Interesting. Considering a WRX but heard people chatting about the GTI. I have heard with a turboback/tune on the WRX it's basically instant torque though.

    • @mehsomething
      @mehsomething 4 роки тому +1

      @@MeltingRubberZ28 That's incredibly misleading. WRX's, SPECIFICALLY the 2015+ models have a twin scroll setup. My 2018 starts building boost as early as 2000, and bring immediate torque, nearly to the max rating by the time I get to 3000 RPM. I've heard people say the newer 2015+ WRX feel slower than the older ones, that's entirely placebo, people only say that because of the sudden torque surge you feel with older models, the 2015+ WRX's are just as fast, if not, faster, the power delivery is just a lot more smooth than sudden, which gives the implication of it being slow. The 2015+ WRX is a car people pick over the STi when it comes to usable city torque, and that alone is enough for people. I'm sure the GTI is a fantastic car, I just don't agree the car is any quicker than the WRX when it comes to usable city torque.

    If you are buying used, the GTI is a way better bargain. For a 2016 you can get one for less than 20k, while a WRX will be 25K+ for the same miles. Also the GTI is better on gas. If you want extra power, you can get a tune for $500 and get an extra 60hp, which puts it past the wrx. Also nicer interior, more cargo space, and apple car play. It’s a no brainer for me. Unless you live somewhere that snows A LOT. PS don’t buy a 2019 GTI. They are having problems with stalling randomly while coming up to a stop.

    I drive a MKV GTI, 6 speed manual. I really enjoy the car, though I do hate the fake sound. I know the car is an I4, the sound doesn’t fool anyone who is into cars. But, I love hatchbacks and it is among the best year in and year out. I hope to drive mine for many years to come.

    The WRX has the greater hp but the GTI weighs significantly less and has a much faster gear shift. I’ve yet to beat a WRX when my GTI was stock but I never really lost either. With a stage 1 APR tune it can toast a WRX.

    I can't stop watching these comparison videos and I still cannot decide between going with a 2019 GTI or a 2019 WRX. I'm leaning towards the WRX for AWD (I live in Seattle and I feel the AWD would be more beneficial out here in the long run) but I have heard that for daily commuters the GTI is overall a better pick with its overall nicer interior and tech...along with better insulation from road noise. I'm torn.... I'm going with automatic transmission for the record (hate all you want but, I just never learned to drive manual)

      Torque Junkies I'm in Albuquerque. Nm. So we do get snow in the winter, but usually not a lot. I drive about 18 miles to work. I do have kids, a 4 year old
      And 2 teenage stepdaughters. I may be being promoted at my work. If that happens I would be using my car for work anywhere from 60 to 100 miles a day. I testdrove the focus st and loved it. Also been a fan of gti amd wrx for a long time but have never driven. I do love spirited driving, accelerating fast and love cornering fast (without kiddos) mainly I mostly only pick up my 4 year old most days.

    • @TorqueJunkies
      @TorqueJunkies  6 років тому +1

      Gabriel Fuoco I would say you are better off with the WRX. The GTI is also a great option when thinking of your kids but I would rule out the si, it's not in the same league like it used to with these guys and the Ford Focus ST while fun it has terrible torque steer

      nyhunter256 I think about 6 more months and ill be able to pull the trigger. I'm actually leaning towards a 2019 vw gti. They come with a 6 year bumper to bumper warranty(72,000 miles). Been researching for the last year. Also I know a few people who own mk7 and they have been trouble free. I'm definitely gonna have to test drive all the competition this summer and see which car wets my whistle lol

    I'm looking to downsize to something better on fuel than the 19 mpg I'm currently getting with my 08 awd Infiniti, driving 80+ miles a day. My wife's car is an LMS tuned 17 Fusion Sport and I love driving it and really want another sporty car for me. I test drove the WRX and the GTI, and think both are great cars. My wife likes the looks of the WRX, but I'd prefer to have the DSG auto for the commute. Other concern I have is around here I see WRX and STI's pulled over more than anything, total cop magnet here. Also drove the Focus ST which I really like the looks, but the Recaro seats suck and it felt unstable getting on it coming out of an S-turn during a test drive. I'm leaning towards the GTI Sport if I can get my wife to buy off on it. Looking to stay under $25000 and I'm seeing some great end of year deals going on right now.

Ok cool the seconds may not be accurate, but all the other videos I seen on youtube about the WRX stated the current year model is slower than the previous gen is because the adding of the extra 6th gear. Trust I watch a lot of videos!!

      I've driven Golf Gti and Wrx and Golf R and Sti. My preference is the Golf R, however out of the two subis I'd take the stock Wrx, as the power delivery is more linear. The Sti has to be driven hard to get the most out of it and most of us will never drive that hard on a day to day basis.

    The 3rd-gen VW EA888 turbo 2.0L engine according to APR's dyno is running 235 hp and 270 ft-lbs (both crankshaft ratings) with the stock car. VW under-rates the power. With a simple flash-only tune, APR (stage 1) brings that up to 305 hp and 371 ft-lb (crank).

    I picked GTI due to better equipment for the money compared to WRX, bigger brakes, Xenon lights. But mainly due to double clutch vs CVT for auto. I need a daily so manual is out of question. Yes, WRX have better grip on wet, snow surfaces, but for straight line power GTI and good tires are good enough. plus GTI gets 38MPG around city when I'm not hooning around and takes 87 gas.

  • @Stevethepirate8973

    Good quality interior from the WRX? Sorry I love the wrx way more than the GTI, but all subarus have fairly cheap interiors. Its one of the MAJOR difference between it and the german GTI. The plastic pieces may hold up ok, but it rattles and shakes and is not all that pleasing. Part of the reason its such a great value!

    I concur. I don’t own any of these car, but agree with your logic. Everyday use is the magic word. Unless you are rich enough to have a car just to sit around like a pair of shoes for the special occasion. I had a BMW Z4 coupe with sports package. It means larger wheels, also unequal. Bigger tires in the rear. Equals no tire rotation, so tires don’t last as long. Higher top speed, where am I going to do the 155mph in SoCal? Soft alloy wheel. Potholes may damage the alloy wheel. LA has some really bad pot holes. Stiff suspension, my wife refused to ride in my Z4, or my mistress as my wife calls it. I guess she was pregnant at the time, that didn’t help with big belly having to bend down to getting into a low sports car.
    Finally my wife convinced me to get rid of it to get a MBZ SUV so it can chauffeur our baby with safety and absorb all the potholes.

    A bit of a mis-match here, really. The GTI is not a high performance car, nor is it supposed to be. If you want the high performance version, then get the Golf R with over 300 PS. The GTI is the performer for everyday driving. It's running costs and insurance are low. It is great to drive but it is not set up to be a hyper-hatch.
