All the members of the band who contributed to the song "Anarchy in the UK" in 1976 are still alive. The bass player for that song when they recorded the single was Glen Matlock. Glen co-wrote most of the songs. He parted with the band at the beginning of 1977 because of arguments he had with the singer, Johnny Rotten aka Lydon. Glen was replaced by Sid Vicious, but Sid couldn't play the bass; he was only there for show. On the Sex Pistols' album, recorded in 1977, all the bass parts were played by the guitarist, Steve Jones. Punk rock began in New York City in the mid '70s, but the Sex Pistols took it to a different level, creating punk for the UK. The Sex Pistols had a few reunion tours in the '90s and 2000s which included Glen Matlock on bass, but it doesn't look as though they're going to do that again. John Lydon's wife has dementia and he's taking care of her. He doesn't have dementia. Thanks for your review of this great groundbreaking band.
As the Sex Pistols were gaining attention, Sid Vicious (Simon John Ritchie) met Nancy Spungen, and the couple began a relationship that culminated in Spungen's death from an apparent stab wound while staying in New York City's Hotel Chelsea with Vicious. Under suspicion of murder, Vicious was released on bail; he was arrested again for assaulting Todd Smith, brother of Patti Smith, at a nightclub, and underwent drug rehabilitation on Rikers Island. He died in 1979 after overdosing on heroin. Less than four weeks after Vicious's death, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle soundtrack album was released. On 15 December 1979, a compilation of live material recorded during his brief solo career was released as Sid Sings. Gary Oldman portrayed Vicious in the biopic Sid and Nancy (1986). In 2006, Vicious, along with the four original members of the Sex Pistols, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, although the band refused to attend.

Johnny Rotten the singer, Steve Jones the guitarist, Paul Cook drums and original bass guitar Glen Matlock are still jumpin! Sid Vicious, the wrongly maligned 2nd bass player killed his girlfriend (accidentally or....?) then flew off with the HERON. (Sid and Nancy aint too true but is a great flim!)
i was a punk rocker. i have seen them live in `1978. they broke up after the show in san francisco that i attended. the bass player died of a drug overdose, but the rest of them are still alive.
Great song from a great band - all of the original band are still alive and they have been known to do the odd re-union - there are some youtube videos of those gigs. Johnny and Steve live in LA now. The second bassist, Sid, died not long after the band split up. Glen, the original bassist is still going strong.
This was the Sex Pistols' first single, released in November 1976 and by February 1978 they had broken up. You may notice that there are two different bass players in this video, the punk looking one is Sid Vicious and he died in 1979, the other one is Glen Matlock and he is still alive, as are the other three. The original four, with Glen, reunited for some shows in 1996, then again in 2002/3 and 2007/8, but they've been inactive since and it doesn't look they're going to do it again. The singer, Johnny Rotten, completely changed his singing style after the Pistols with his new band PIL, and when the Pistols reunited he pretty much used his PIL voice on the Pistols' songs. To get an idea what they sounded in 2008, here's a complete concert: ua-cam.com/video/VhxBtaIx-MM/v-deo.html
The Sex Pistols held a reunion concert in 2007. You can watch it here on UA-cam. Here is the link to the concert film: ua-cam.com/video/o_SQI9kgqIc/v-deo.html
All the members are alive except the bass player who sadly died of an overdose after the death of his girlfriend. The band is no longer together although they periodically do reunion shows with their original bass player. The singer John Lydon has other projects including his band PIL. The guitarist has a radio show in L.A. They were an important part of the British punk scene of the 70s.
I liked that you mentioned the melody in this. One thing massively overlooked in punk of this era is that while it might have been unashamedly raw, it still had some really good tunes. It's basically rock with an edge, and all the pretentiousness thrown away. It's music to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up - something sadly missing in the music of today, generally.
Yes. I always feel slightly baffled when people say punk was tuneless. A mention of "Teenage Kicks" usually puts pay to that notion, or they say "Oh, that was a punk song, was it?"
The guitarist Steve Jones is now a radio personality/dj in LA. He has one of the most popular shows in LA. It's called Jonseys Jukebox. Its a podcast too.
My earliest childhood memory is when the Sex Pistols appeared on a TV show shortly after this song was recorded and there was outrage after they used bad language though they were provoked by the TV presenter. The mid 70s was a grim time for the UK with a depressed economy, high taxes, strikes and the government finances were so bad the UK had to get a loan from the IMF. Young people were pissed off and established rock bands were considered pompous and aloof resulting in the Sex Pistols and the Punk movement.
"Anarchy in Bedrock" by Green Jelly ... Also "Three Little Pigs" and "Bear Song" and there are a few more that might not be ready for prime time. The Sex Pistols were amazing and fresh and were so totally undone. If anyone had known what to do with them and handle them they might have made more than that one album. All the biggest and best have that someone that knows everything about everything and makes it happen. The Sex Pistols never had anyone they could trust and wound up screwed ... It is forty years late and they are still a thing where much larger groups are waste ...
Johnny Rotten (John Joseph Lydon) is one of the best punk singers for me. I love the Sex Pistols and his later stuff with P.I.L. here in particular "religion". Listen to "God save the Queen". On May 27, 1977, "God Save the Queen" was released for the Queen's silver jubilee. The single gained a lot of attention when the band rented a boat for the Queen's birthday in 1977 (which was called "Queen Elizabeth"), on which they gave a concert at full volume in the middle of the Thames in front of journalists and invited guests. The boat was seized by the water police and most of the passengers were arrested, but the band itself escaped. And from the USA the Dead Kennedys with Jello Biafra and the title "California über alles". Biafra against his archenemy Edmund Gerald "Jerry" Brown Jr., who was governor of California from 1975 to 1983 and again from 2011 to 2019.
This song was from the 70s. I saw them in the 90s and they were fantastic. It was a great night out. Just as raucous as you'd expect. If you want a couple of other blistering punk recommendations, I'd suggest either the Damned - Neat Neat Neat on Supersonic. Or Lesibu Grand - WFS.
This was my teenage years. New Year eve of 1976/77 I heard the Sex Pistols. I was hooked to punk. I was 17, my parents hated it, the more they hated it, the more I liked it.

The singer Johnny Rotten (aka John Lyndon) is still alive. His band after Sex Pistols was PiL (Public Image Ltd.) Check out his 1984 collaboration with Afrika Bambaataa in "World Destruction". Bassist Sid Vicious died with his girlfriend 1979 (their story was made into a movie).
If you listened to John Lydon speaking (lead singer) you wouldn't believe it's the same guy, very eloquent and very perceptive in language. From the pistols he was lead in PIL public image limited. Great review 👍
The spark that ignited the over-ground break-out of punk - mainly in the media; which reacted with horror. Now it seems merely cute, but this was quite at odds with other things going on in the UK chart.
One album from this band, but it was such an impactful album that they are in the rock and roll hall of fame. They refused to attend or perform at their induction.
John, the singer, was really into reggae so after the Sex Pistols dissolved, Virgin records sent him ot Jamaica. He brought his friend DJ Don Lette's with him. Don got to meet his Jamaica ancestors who were apparently Rhasta or saw his as Rhasta but they were not impressed that he ate Lobster or something like that. The Jamaican's called Johnny Rotten, Johnny Rhasta 😊
I sang this at Karaoke once, at the time John was advertising butter on the TV. I made up new lyrics, I can't remember most of them but I do remeber: 'There are many things to put on your toast, I like butter the most, marge is very unhealthy, who eats Stork SB. Cos IIIII wanna seeeee, buttered scones for tea.' I was a bit disappointed in John for making a commercial at the time, but now I can see it was a very punk thing to do.
They are still alive except there sometime bassist who really wasn't their bassist Sid Vicious who died of a heroin overdose in the seventies after being accused of murdering his girlfriend Nancy spungen. You need to see the biopic Sid and Nancy it'll blow your mind
Everybody who matters in that band is alive and old. Johnny Rotten/Lydon recently toured with his other band PIL, and guitarist Steve Jones might still have a radio show called Joneseys Jukebox. The only dead member is Sid Vicious, who was pretty much hired by the bands slimey management for his image.
They were a short lived burn out band ..Sid died in 1979 from heroin but singer Johnny Rotten is still alive and another member Jones has radio program in LA
Yes John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) is still alive and continues playing look out for P.I.L and song Rise also check out a recording a song with Leffield open up
For a little background check out the movie "Sid and Nancy." Sid Vicious was a band member, but he's not with us anymore. The movie is fiction, but it's based on true events and there's a lot of stuff about the band.
No one can accuse the Sex Pistols of not being high energy or entertaining, that's for sure. If you enjoyed them you would love The Clash. The Sex Pistols didn't last for very long. The bassist Sid Vicious died, the group broke up... They burned too bright to burn for very long. Phil Liden (Johnny Rotten) the lead signer is still actively making music as far as I know.
The bass guitarist died from a heroin overdose ~2 years after this came out. Everyone else is still alive, and still active in music. The most celebrated and famous of them has been the singer, John Lydon (Johnny Rotten), who would go on to be in an innovative band called Public Image, Ltd. He would also pioneer rap-rock fusion in the 80s, and, to add the cherry on top of a storied career, he was instrumental in kick-starting rave music in the earlier 90s when he collaborated with Leftfield for the song 'Open Up.'
I can assure you, plenty of people hated this song back in 1976. Classic song classic album. I think all of the original line up are alive, but Sid Vicious [who played bass after Glen Matlock left] died from a heroin overdose back in the 70’s
There is a movie called The Great rock and roll Swindle which is about making a joke rock band that can't play worth a crap yes, it's about the Sex Pistols
They're still alive, except for their 2nd bass player, Sid Vicious, who died from a heroin overdose. They occasionally reunite and do limited tours, though they're in their 60s now.
The lead singer was in a coma for 3 years and they had problems with 3 record contacts that got dismissed and then Warner bros a Then got them 10 million record sales happy birthday and 70 thousand subscribers
The 1970s was a great decade was split around 76/77 everything before was still hangover from 60s and the Neptune in Libra generation after 76/77 this was a complete change and the Neptune in Scorpio generation kicked in and you can see the difference this generation went all the way to grunge same energy same generation

Hair spiked with sugar water .. nappy pins everywhere ripped t- shirts denim or leather jackets sprayed and doc’s and a pair of tartan bondage trousers .. the old man took one look and told me I wasn’t going out his house like that ... upstairs got changed.. clothes in a bag thrown out the window, got changed on the bus .. went to see the damned at Digbeth civic hall Birmingham ..
We used egg whites with food color to spike our hair in SF in the old days. Old catholic school outfits, turned into Scottish plaid bondage pants.
Haha .. indeed, .. love the way “yanks “ call it plaid
@@janes.1559 Scottish plaid ? Do you mean tartan ?
Johnny Rotten
the singer, Steve Jones the guitarist, Paul Cook drums and original bass guitar Glen Matlock are still jumpin!
I had to come in and check it out. I haven't heard the sex pistols for ever. Fun...
The punk scene over in the US had Iggy Pop do the very first crowd surf. Another early chap who attempted it was Jim Morrison (Doors) by stage diving.
I loved punk fashion; safety-pin earrings, torn fishnet tights, bin-liner dresses... and that was the guys!
This album changed music it was revolutionary
The Sex Pistols held a reunion concert in 2007. You can watch it here on UA-cam. Here is the link to the concert film: ua-cam.com/video/o_SQI9kgqIc/v-deo.html
Punk Rock changed my life when I was 13. Gave me boldness and confidence.
Haven't listened to them since they were Green Jello.
Absolute classic, MENTAL song Jayy.
Dead Kennedys, 45 Grave, X, Bad Brains.....ah those club nights on Sunset strip. This is a great reaction.....love your channel, lots of variety!
If you went to a Pistols concert, wear your waterproofs as you would get covered in spit.🤧
Saw them twice and escaped dry
Even the guitarr sounds criminal. Love it! Greetings from Jonas Gothenburg Sweden. 😊
Bonjour Jayy, i hope you are in good shape and good mood too god bless you and your family too. I like your sex pistols reaction, Punk from UK, anarchy. If you like that type of music try 'God save the queen' by them, . Many Kissses to you JAYY. 😘 ❤️
You really got a very good taste in music little Sister. You're one of the Best with your pink helmet. Sex pistols are the best band of punk era, with the underrated The Clash. WELL DONE GIRL !!!!
Never mind the bollocks here's the Sex Pistols. Love that album.
Nice video. A great documentary on The Sex Pistols is "The Filth and The Fury"
A favorite of my old-school punk rock self
The Pistols totally changed music forever. I absolutely love them.
@@stevepence229 Don't get me wrong. I like old music. But people like to pretend it's still cutting edge or something. I like to see it in context.
I made up new lyrics, I can't remember most of them but I do remeber:
'There are many things to put on your toast, I like butter the most,
marge is very unhealthy, who eats Stork SB.
Cos IIIII wanna seeeee, buttered scones for tea.'
I was a bit disappointed in John for making a commercial at the time, but now I can see it was a very punk thing to do.
I liked seeing your reaction to this iconic band 😻
If you want a British punk sitcom to watch, see The young ones.
I grew up on The Young Ones. Wouldn't have it any other way.
Great choice, Jayy. Check out the Pistols doing "God Save The Queen" and "Pretty Vacant".
The only dead member is Sid Vicious, who was pretty much hired by the bands slimey management for his image.
...great reaction
WOW , you totally nailed it with your first reaction. :-)
Both him & the guitarist live in california 🙃🙃👍👍
LOVE YOUR REACTION ❤️❤️❤️
As hard core punk these dudes were, it's amazing that 3 of 4 are still alive and thriving in their mid '60s. 🤘🤘🤘
4 out of 5 are still alive.
@@petershauntaylor2310 Well said. Glen Matlock? Never heard of him.
"Sid Vicious...what a dirty, scruffy bastard, they couldn't bury him when he died, the dustmen were on strike" - Bernard Manning
Motley Crue have always been big fans of the Sex Pistols. The Crue usually close their concerts with this song. Check out a live clip of theirs...
Make no mistake - this song is Rock History!
Watch the Filth and the Fury. That'll tell you everything you need to know about the Sex Pistols. My absolute all time favourite band. 👍
You know it man
This is a great band! I loved these guys in high school. Next listen to The Clash!
They were a short lived burn out band ..Sid died in 1979 from heroin but singer Johnny Rotten is still alive and another member Jones has radio program in LA
Arguably the best band ever.Seriously.
He would also pioneer rap-rock fusion in the 80s, and, to add the cherry on top of a storied career, he was instrumental in kick-starting rave music in the earlier 90s when he collaborated with Leftfield for the song 'Open Up.'
this song changed my life 1977 , the guy in black leather sid vicious is dead drug overdose the rest still with us i believe
I was young when punk started, I did like it but by 79 I got into 2 tone and post- punk , new wave .
another vote for you to check out Public Image Limited. Glad you liked it.
I can assure you, plenty of people hated this song back in 1976. Classic song classic album. I think all of the original line up are alive, but Sid Vicious [who played bass after Glen Matlock left] died from a heroin overdose back in the 70’s
The drummer is Paul Cook.
Even though she's wearing pink headphones with cats ears she gets it, one of the greatest most powerful songs ever written
They only did one album and it defined a generation the best UK band ever and I include the Beatles and stones
Three years? Ha ha, it was a few months months. It did give him his famous stare though.
The 1970s was a great decade was split around 76/77 everything before was still hangover from 60s and the Neptune in Libra generation after 76/77 this was a complete change and the Neptune in Scorpio generation kicked in and you can see the difference this generation went all the way to grunge same energy same generation
