  • This is the fan-remake of what I believe to be one of the most obscure Metroid games. The original Metroid II: Return of Samus was a GameBoy game that had many improvements over the original Metroid on the NES, but it was still largely held back by it's weak hardware. This remake was in development for well over a decade and it was set out to bring Metroid 2 to the quality standards of other Metroid games like Metroid: Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission. In the end, it fully surpassed those two games together and is almost on the same quality level as Super Metroid, if not higher.
    It came out some time before Nintendo's own official remake of Metroid 2 did, which was called Metroid 2: Samus Returns. Both of the remakes are great on their own, but I personally prefer AM2R, and not only because it takes so much after Zero Mission, but also because of the tremendous quality it achieved, especially since it was made by only a single person in the span of a decade.
    For this longplay, I made sure to get 100% of all of the items in the game collected since it's just that easy to do and because it's my absolute favorite Metroid game of them all.
    After the events of the first Metroid game in which Samus defeated Mother Brain and stopped the Space Pirates from reproducing Metroids for use as biological weapons, Planet SR388, the homeworld to Metroids, seemingly gave no signs of Metroid life when the Galactic Federation's scanners failed to detect any Metroids on the planet. The Research Team was soon sent to the site to study the planet and it's eco-system, and after a fairly short amount of time, contact with them had been lost. A Search & Rescue team comprised of elite soldiers serving in the Galactic Federation was sent to investigate the situation, and most importantly, search for the missing research team members and rescue them. It didn't take long until contact was lost with it as well, making it pretty clear that the Metroid threat is still very much present on the planet. This left the Galactic Federation with no choice but to sent out a lone bounty hunter to do the job, and it just so happened that there was only one true candidate with the right expertise and experience for the job - Samus Aran. The Galactic Federation sends out Samus to search for both of the teams and to eradicate the Metroid threat, once and for all.
    While exploring the depths of the planet as Samus, you will encounter various structures left by the extinct Chozo race. There'll be plenty of mysteries about them and the Metroids to find as well as a healthy amount references to the other games in the series. Along the way, you'll be recovering gear for your power suit left by the Chozo in order to explore deeper into the planet and you'll be blasting a lot of Metroids, since the primary goal of this game is to eliminate the Metroid threat. They will come in several forms and these forms will have several variations depending on how grown the Metroid is, all of which come with their own advantages and disadvantages. You will have to strategically plan how you will approach them, since they aren't always easy to deal with and quite a few of them will require you to search for specific ways of tackling them.
    As I've mentioned it before, the game takes heavily after Metroid: Zero Mission. If you remember that game, Samus was rather heavy as her falling speed was great but so was her walking/running speed as well. The graphics also take after that same game, but they are vastly improved and overall slightly less stylized.
    This is definitely an amazing game, worthy of all the praise it gets. And this is the second entry in the main Metroid series that I checked off my list, there's just about two more longplays left before I am done. Super Metroid is going to be a long one.
    Game: Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R, PC).

    Okay, one thing I REALLY like in this playthrough is at 1:58:00 - the Fuel Cell Temperature escape sequence. I LOVE the fact that the bar is non-linear - it's not just increasing at a steady rate such that it's a glorified timer, but it seems to actually speed up and slow down. In my head, it means the fuel cell is coming apart and losing control in stages, and the amount of time you have to get out is unpredictable. It adds a whole layer of urgency to the sequence - we don't really see that very often in self-destruct escape sequences.
    (I know the gauge is pre-programmed to advance to certain levels as you progress and is scripted to explode at the end of that sequence. But it was still very well done - very tense. :)

    • @KieferSkunk
      @KieferSkunk Рік тому +2

      It occurs to me that the implied unpredictability of the escape time in this scene has much the same terror component to it as the randomized (and extremely tight) escape windows in Metroid Dread when get caught by an EMMI. Those things are already terrifying enough, but the fact that the devs randomized the intervals with the two attack stages so you can't just memorize the timings to get out, was nothing short of brilliant on their part. While it's not as immediate here (and in fact, I'm sure you'd have to be seriously trying to fail), the presentation here still gives that sense of "I need to get out of here as fast as possible or I will die."
      Also a very nice addition to the remake. Great a game as it was, the original Return of Samus had almost nothing in the way of urgency - you were only required to act fast when fighting Metroids, but never because something in the environment forced you to keep moving.

    OK, at 3:56:15 when Chozo text flashes on screen to be translated as INTERLOPER is low-key Silent Hill/Fatal Frame freaky.
    Of course after Dread, we know just WHO would view Samus as an interloper there.

    I've been checking through my old videos lately and I've noticed that I've never clarified something about this video.
    You can see that it's max resolution is 720p. In reality, it's real resolution is 480p, which was then upscaled to 720p through video editing. And all because when I originally recorded this game, I only recently started to use OBS and I completely forgot to set the proper output resolution before recording it.
    I only hope no one's mad about that. If anything, it's at least a decent reason to revisit it in the near future, should anyone be interested in a re-run of this game.
    While I'm on the topic of this video, I went ahead and updated the description to sound less... inexperienced, if that's the word for it? Anyway, it should be much better now.

      I haven't played either one myself, but from what I've seen, it seems to be a matter of preference between the two. I've been watching playthroughs of both games, and they're both very good in their own ways. I'm leaning AM2R myself because of how it mixes elements of Super Metroid, Fusion, and Return of Samus, and the music is outstanding. But I also really want to play Samus Returns and will eventually dust off my 3DS to do so.

    • @superplayerex2431

      In case you're still looking to download and play AM2R, there's a sub-Reddit for the game, but what's more important is that it hosts the link to the GitHub page where you can download the game's launcher.
      Here's the link to it's download page on GitHub:
      github.com/AM2R-Community-Developers/AM2RLauncher/releases/latest
      Simply pick the latest release of the launcher and download it. But that's not all, because you will also need the 1.1 version of AM2R. The launcher does not include it for legal reasons, so you will have to find it yourself on the Internet.
      I recommend looking up the 1.1 version of AM2R through a search engine and going through the results. Just be careful not to catch any viruses on suspicious sites or links, but I think you probably knew that already.
      Once you have the 1.1 version of AM2R, you will need to start the AM2R launcher and patch the game with it's latest community made version. It will include various bug fixes as well as additions that make the game much more re-playable.

    • @superplayerex2431
      @superplayerex2431  Рік тому +5

      I'm sorry I'm really late, but I think I should tell you how to do it anyway. It just doesn't feel right to leave it unanswered.
      To do the air-dash, you need to crouch during the speed booster running. You'll know it works when you see and hear specific visual and sound effects, such as the different red color glow and the wooshing sound. With that all, you can initiate the air-dash by simply jumping while holding a desired direction. It might be a bit complicated control wise to get it in the direction you need it to because it activates only when Samus isn't spinning during her jump.
      There's also a bit of advanced tech with it where you can spin jump and cancel the spin to then hold the direction you want to air-dash into and press the jump button again to initiate it. That will allow you to do it in mid-air pretty much almost anywhere.
      But the more involved part of this same tech is that it also allows you to air-dash into slopes to retain your momentum as well as the speed booster dash itself. This is how you solve a good number of rooms in the game involving the speed booster ability.
      I hope this helps, if you're still in need of advice. I'm once again sorry for not responding back then, I must've missed the notification.

Both have their uniqueness and both are good games. AM2R is a more raw Metroid experience with some QoL improvements and Samus Returns is a more beginner friendly experience to get used to the genre. who is even agreeing with stuff like this in the year 2024
      This grudge harbored by some AM2R fans has always been pretty silly: the game was completed and widely released, which frankly is all that really mattered in a world where most kinds of public, ambitious fangames are at risk of getting slapped with a C&D before seeing the light of day at all.
      And then Metroid officially got its resurgence through Samus Returns - which was a great, innovative interpretation of Metroid 2 in its own right - followed by the absolute triumph that is Metroid Dread. And that's to say nothing of the amazing Metroid Prime 1 remaster, as well as Prime 4 finally being on the verge of releasing!
      From this comment though you would think Nintendo wiped AM2R from the internet and then shelved Metroid forever, lol. It's a wildly out-of-date and dismissive attitude to have towards the state of the franchise right now, which may very well be at its healthiest so far.
