I surprised my friend by learning her language

- This has been a long time coming. I spent 30 days learning French, in an effort to surprise my french friend Louise when I visited her in Atlanta. Let me just say, it was so worth it.
I've never considered myself very good at languages, but I truly believe they are some of the most valuable things we can spend our time learning. Being able to understand the way that other people around the world speak and think is something of a superpower, and this video is a snapshot of what 30 days of learning can produce. If you don't know any other languages, consider this your catalyst to start learning - doesn't even have to be French.
Leave a like if you enjoyed, and let me know about your experiences in learning languages!
Merci d'avoir regardé
Zack

@@zackburkhardt yeah and french is a really hard language you did a very good job
French is really easy. Hungarian is the definition of hard.
@@godemperormeow8591 It all depends on where you are coming from and which languages you know. If you only know english, I bet everything else looks hard.
That look on her face when you started talking to her in her native language... So Cool and so awesome.

As a Native French, this is impressive, I like when strangers try our language because it's really rare!!
I find your comment to be quite interesting. I wonder if maybe I’m stuck in a real-world “search bubble”. Almost all of my friends and acquaintances who have studied a foreign language have studied French. (The rest having studied German or American Sign Language.) So, French language proficiency, or at least familiarity, feels like the the norm.
I’ve been lucky enough to have visited over 20 countries (on business) and always make a point to learn a minimum of 25-50 words used there*, such as those for courtesy and directions. To me, this is not only a matter of showing at least the most basic level of respect, but also very practical. Is this really something that most people visiting France, Quebec, etc. do not do? Are, for example, Ugly Americans even uglier (rude) than my personal experiences suggest?
* the exception being The Netherlands and, to a lesser extent, Germany, because locals all but demand to use/practice their English instead. ;) Still, basic respect is shown on both sides.
Because time marches on whether we like it or not, I’m now older than I’d prefer to admit. Is it possible that, even in a world where language learning resources are now _infinitely_ more plentiful, younger visitors to French-speaking countries/regions are actually showing _less_ respect? Respectfully, I’d be curious to learn what your experiences have been.
Thanks and be well.
@@a1nelson Allow me to answer as a native french and I'm not sure I understood your comment well, but if you're wondering if tourists who visits France make an effort to learn a few words or not, I personally don't find that most people do so, or they say very well-known words that they probably already know. (Most of my encounters with tourists have been in ski resorts or in Paris, where there are a lot of young people coming in groups, so my opinion may be biased.) But i don't find rude to not learn some French though and sometimes they've a friend who speaks french really well in their group.
Tell me if i'm wrong on what you asked ;)
@@a1nelson Well I'm from The Mediterannean Side of France, and this a really touristic site, and when I see all of cultures and tourist from the World, None of them will try our language, they will constantly speak english even for the most easy things to ask, Be well too!

What? People learning French is rare?According to Google even just Germany got 1.6 million students learning it in school
I met my wife at school and since she’s Italian, I learned Italian in secret to surprise her. I first tried during the evenings and weekends with a language course book (this was the 1980s), but it bored me. Since I already learned French at school and was quite good at it, and the similarities between French and Italian are quite extensive, I got myself an Italian novel instead and worked my way through it over a three week summer holiday that I spent away from her with my parents.
Whenever I came across a word I couldn’t guess exactly, I wrote it down, and every few dozen words collected I looked them up one by one in a dictionary. By the end of the holiday there wasn’t a word in that 180 page novel I didn’t know, and I could have told the story by heart, in Italian. It was a full immersion and a bloody hard piece of work, but young love is powerful.
We’ve raised three bilingual kids together, and I took the Italian part of that, by the way.
Thats crazy actually👏🏼
Wow what a story. Thats awesome!
Grandissimo , bel lavoro!
I have never learned Italian language just English, German, French but in one day I had to translate Italian Albanian language pair. She is speaking very slowly.
When I was in third grade high school, it was almost 2 and half school years I had started learning French I had to interpret Albanian French language pair. You should continue learning French, for example the news cast in French language. Then watch movies in French language
Love how you didn't edit out the awkward silences. Makes the video more authentic. I like authentic 👍🏾👍🏾

@@zackburkhardt as someone who is learning a language and also struggles to think of words sometimes, (and is also planning to go to georgia tech funnily enough lol) i appreciated this aspect a TONNN because it really helped me know that im not the only one who struggles with this. I'm quite impressed for how good your pronunciation and even accent is for such little time.
thanks! I honestly think learning German has helped a lot. They're not the most similar but just having learned a different language from english made it a lot easier to adapt to another one.
French pronunciation has rules, which is much easier than English
As a self-taught french learner myself, his lack of understanding what she’s saying is so relatable. Speaking is so much easier than listening at first! Ive been at it for 18 months now, so understanding her was pretty easy, but i wouldve been just like him at the 30 day mark. Hang in there bro it gets easier with practice!

One of the cutest and realistic language learning videos I've seen yet. Don't worry mate, the other videos are pretty unrealistic.
Even though you did not understand much of what she said, you did AMAZING considering the short amount of time spent. I think you may have just needed to talk to different native speakers in the meantime maybe on learning apps but that might not be possible and I think it’s great you learned something new!
Thank you! Keeping it a secret was definitely fun but yeah, it would definitely be easier to learn if I'd been talking to her the whole time
Thank you for not faking the experience of learning a language. I believe many big youtubers fake progress for views.
I'm a native french and in 30 days your french is pretty good
There's that special bond between you. Hope it goes well between you two, you both seriously have that really special look when staring at each other.
Bon courage dude
I was moved and entertained by your video. What matters most was your cute intention, your courage and your willingness to try. It was an honor watching your 30 days! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
It's easy to memorize phrases, but when I started learning Japanese it was so hard to understand what people would say back to me. I had to study a lot of examples of conversations in UA-cam videos or TV shows to get a better grasp on common vocabulary used in responses to the phrases I knew.
Yeah totally! it was a different beast going from learning online to actually trying to speak and communicate with someone
Use ChatGPT so you will be surprised but not with an actual person!
Its crazy to think we are so blessed to have the internet to be able to share these experiences with random people around the world! This was so genuine bro!! You red as a tomato had me dying lol keep it up!

I think you did well for 30 days just keep at it, don’t stress. French is not easy, I grew up speaking and learning French in Senegal, once I moved to the US I realized how difficult they made the French language. Like what! So many verb tenses and prepositions!
This was super commendable for the short amount of time you had to learn it! And the fact is she understood your questions almost perfectly
Thanks! She definitely knew what I was saying, not so much the other way around though haha

Hi, I'm french and I'm very happy to see someone learn my language. I've been trying to improve my English for several years now (more than ten years) and I'm still making mistakes. So don't worry if you make mistakes, the important thing is to make the effort to learn and to be proud of your progress. I read my first book in English a few months ago now and I was proud to be able to understand 70/80% of its content.
Thanks! Thats great, keep it up

Wow….I studied French for several years in school and still struggled to communicate with a native speaker, so you did amazingly well in only 30 days!! for 30 days his memory of those complex and long words is crazy, being able to hold a conversation like that is really good, he only forgot some of little words in between and she managed to understand everything he said. bien joué frérot !
I just saw your UA-cam video and I must say that I am very impressed as much by the quality of the language in just 30 days as by your investment during this month, you can be proud of yourself!
the meaning she described for "on ne change pas une équipe qui gagne" is not correct ^^
it's a rough equivalent of "if something ain't broke don't fix it"
Smh I'll see what she has to say for herself
I would not be so harsh. You choose one of the most complicated languages, in my opinion, and you did well.
In fact you did better in a few days than some people, in months. Yes, you had a hard time to understand but that a vocabulary problem. It takes time and a lot of reading of French novels, articles, etc and talking with others in French to be able to fluently understand someone.
Thanks for the kind words! Looking back, I'm definitely proud of where I was at, and I'm honestly just excited to hopefully get even better.
most complicated languages? I appreciate his effort, but French is so easy to learn from English compared to most languages out there.
Big props to you man! As a native french (canadian) speaker, I'm very impressed and it's absolutely amazing that you learned so much in such a short time!
This is amazing, i have been studying french for 3 years and u are great! So proud of you ❤
thanks!
You cannot learn a new language in just 30 days. What you did is best as a person can in 30 days. Regarding other videos where people learn in 30 days or one week, they already have past experience with language. For example, Nathanial Drew UA-camr already had past experience with language such as school, and also knew languages from same family which really eases new language acquisition. And that's why they are able to talk on so many topics easily compared to you.
You did well but thirty days is an extremely short (and unrealistic) amount of time to learn any language you've never spoken before let alone French (which is objectively the most difficult Romance language for foreigners and anglophones specifically). You should have given yourself a little more time. French, the ultimate gendered language, has one of the most elaborate grammar rules verbs, adjectives and determiners have to agree with gender and number with its subject.
Yeah absolutely. I didn't expect to become decent at the language by any means, I just wanted to show what was possible in such a small amount of time. I'd like to learn more and I know it'll take a lot more work to get to a decent level. However, even making as much progress as I did in thirty days was encouraging and just showed how much better one could be with even more time.
@@zackburkhardt Yes, I knew you weren't trying to get great and just challenged yourself and you did very good in such a short time. I hope you stick with learning French because it's a very beautiful, rich and useful language to master. It was brave of you to teach yourself French. If I didn't learn French in school I don't even think I'd be audacious enough to learn it by myself.😂Thank you for making this and I wish you the best!
