@@zackburkhardtyes, you’re way too hard on yourself, having heard your closing thoughts. You’re able to physically pronounce sounds like a native. Anglophones usually stop at the “R” and “A” sound in foreign languages (because the whole Latin alphabet is drastically different in English (“ayy-bee-see-dee”) compared to the alphabet the rest of European languages share, whether they’re Romance, Germanic or Scandinavian (“ah-bay-say-day”)). So yeah, German really DID help a lot! Learning Dutch first would have made a softer transition between English and German, and English and French, but glad you went the hard way 😂💪

I met my wife at school and since she’s Italian, I learned Italian in secret to surprise her. I first tried during the evenings and weekends with a language course book (this was the 1980s), but it bored me. Since I already learned French at school and was quite good at it, and the similarities between French and Italian are quite extensive, I got myself an Italian novel instead and worked my way through it over a three week summer holiday that I spent away from her with my parents.
Whenever I came across a word I couldn’t guess exactly, I wrote it down, and every few dozen words collected I looked them up one by one in a dictionary. By the end of the holiday there wasn’t a word in that 180 page novel I didn’t know, and I could have told the story by heart, in Italian. It was a full immersion and a bloody hard piece of work, but young love is powerful.
We’ve raised three bilingual kids together, and I took the Italian part of that, by the way.

I find your comment to be quite interesting. I wonder if maybe I’m stuck in a real-world “search bubble”. Almost all of my friends and acquaintances who have studied a foreign language have studied French. (The rest having studied German or American Sign Language.) So, French language proficiency, or at least familiarity, feels like the the norm.
I’ve been lucky enough to have visited over 20 countries (on business) and always make a point to learn a minimum of 25-50 words used there*, such as those for courtesy and directions. To me, this is not only a matter of showing at least the most basic level of respect, but also very practical. Is this really something that most people visiting France, Quebec, etc. do not do? Are, for example, Ugly Americans even uglier (rude) than my personal experiences suggest?
      * the exception being The Netherlands and, to a lesser extent, Germany, because locals all but demand to use/practice their English instead. ;) Still, basic respect is shown on both sides.
Because time marches on whether we like it or not, I’m now older than I’d prefer to admit. Is it possible that, even in a world where language learning resources are now _infinitely_ more plentiful, younger visitors to French-speaking countries/regions are actually showing _less_ respect? Respectfully, I’d be curious to learn what your experiences have been.
      Thanks and be well.

@@a1nelson Allow me to answer as a native french and I'm not sure I understood your comment well, but if you're wondering if tourists who visits France make an effort to learn a few words or not, I personally don't find that most people do so, or they say very well-known words that they probably already know. (Most of my encounters with tourists have been in ski resorts or in Paris, where there are a lot of young people coming in groups, so my opinion may be biased.) Hi, I'm french and I'm very happy to see someone learn my language. I've been trying to improve my English for several years now (more than ten years) and I'm still making mistakes. So don't worry if you make mistakes, the important thing is to make the effort to learn and to be proud of your progress. I read my first book in English a few months ago now and I was proud to be able to understand 70/80% of its content.

Accent, pretty impressive! This was very realistic and probably the speed that I learn languages too, unlike other videos I’ve seen where people seem to have a fluent conversation after just a few weeks, which is so discouraging to those of us who really struggle. The thing is, there is a lot more to learning a language than people sometimes realise. It’s not just learning words or phrases, it’s comprehension, pronunciation, being able to read and write the language. It’s understanding how to use verbs in the past present and future. It’s word order. Etc etc. My Dutch is still not fluent despite living in the Netherlands well over 23 years and at this point I’ve pretty much given up as I have very little social interaction anyway. But despite this I still really enjoy learning languages. Just enjoy the process and don’t worry about how fast you learn it, it’s all about human connection and that is what you should focus on the most.

I feel honestly kinda proud of myself as apart from my class I don't have any sources for listening to french right now (by choice) and the people in my class are obviously not natives. And natives have a diff accent and speed so it's not easy. Kudos to you brother! You held great convo on only 30 days or 27 to be precise of learning a language

I’m legitimately impressed with your progress here in only that short period of time. I took classes for 2 years in German as a second language, and while it was (if I may brag for just a second) my best class in those years, I don’t think I picked things up quite this quickly at the beginning. That being said, I’m not really a fan of comparing myself to others, but I appreciate your showing that dedication to a personal goal can really pay off! 😃
As a side note, I did take just one week of a French language class about 14 years ago, but the two main phrases I learned are still engrained in my memory 😄
