After driving V6 Tacomas for 20+ years, the V6 is as unremarkable as it is reliable. Quite gutless, even driving alone and not towing or hauling anything most of the time.
I've driven the V6 in Canada. It's a gas guzzeler. I can imagine towing anything with it, you'll get passed by a Prius, or just about anything if you did. Was the V6 reliable, yes, no question. But Toyota has been making reliable 4 cyc for decades.
No sunroof option is a deal breaker. Got to have that sunroof open on a beautiful day when I'm making my way up to the trails. Also if I ever camp out in the back of the 4runner I'd want that sky light.
I just chose the good old reliable 2024. 3rd 4Runner and they have all been the most reliable vehicles I've ever owned. Still have our 02 with 225000 mile for transporting dogs and Home Depot runs. Love the 2025, but I will wait to see how the new tech and engine holds up.
Hey Joe, not having a sun roof is definitely a zonk 💥 but just no that the 4Runner TRD Pro does have a sunroof and I like the TRD Pro better. Do a review on the TRD Pro.
No matter how it is great looks, just wait for it's 2.4L engine for couple of years and then give your opinion. I'll never ever pay a penny for this generation. I'm gratefully happy with my 2023. God bless America

For sure! The 4Runner's got a ton of features like a powerful V6 engine, a rugged frame, and great ground clearance. It's built for off-roading, so you can tackle mud, rocks, and steep hills with ease.
A beautiful teal color. Really fantastic. Don't like the black fender flares. Would prefer more of that gorgeous body color. Love the bronze accents paired with the teal. An amazing vehicle; the 4Runner is one of the most durable vehicles on the market. Toyota is crushing it; they are cranking out one improved product after the next. The hybrid was logical; they have mileage standards to meet so it is inevitable. If I lived in the mountains, this would be the vehicle to have. Love the interior with the temp knobs. I despise any car that uses up/down buttons for temp control. A knob is so much easier to use.

As always, Joe, you do the best, most in depth automotive reviews on the internet! Never been a 4Runner fan before, but for some reason this one speaks to me! Love that green paint, the wheels are some of the coolest I've seen on a stock vehicle, and the overall design hits it out of the park! Not so sure about the hybrid power train, however. There's something to be said for a normally aspirated engine with more cylinders and larger displacement, not as highly stressed, one of the reasons I recently chose a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 Hemi V8, which unfortunately is no longer available.
I had two 5th gens over 12 years, as offroad adventure/winter drivers. I am Japanese living in North America, and I think the 5th gen as the best SUV in the North American market. I have had Range Rover, Defender and now own a GX550 Overtrail, but non of them can top my previous 2019 4Runner TRD Offroad, in terms of long term reliability, long term owning potential and overall value vs price. Unfortunately I do not love certain aesthetic and mechanical design choices of the 6th gen that lower durability, like front shock mount bumpstop instead of frame mounted. This Trailhunter looks decent, but the new TRD Pro looks awful with the shiny black glossy fender flares😣 The only 5th gen 4Runne tears buyers of these will be storing is tears from laughter lol. I supercharged my 2019 TRD Offroad and bet the combined MSRP plus Magnuson supercharger cost was more affordable than this Trailhunter will be lol
Current Gen 5 owner, and have owned a 4 and a 3 as well. Not sure about this one. Will have to see how it behaves in the real world. The initial results of the resigned Tundra and Tacoma give me pause about jumping into this one right off the bat. My current 2015 is at 213k miles. Lots of battle scars but still drives the same as it did the day I bought it new. No hurry to trade it in.
I've owned a 2012 4RUNNER TRAIL EDITION, 2016 Tacoma, and now have 2018 Tundra. i considered buying a 2022 Tundra when they came out. I didn't because of the marginal fuel economy improvement. i really hope Toyota focuses more on fuel economy going forward. Toyotas are known for being hard on fuel...
glade we purchased a 2024 4runner pro, the last of the great Japanese V6s paid 57K. this new 2025 4-cylinder turbo with a battery will be around 70k with more tech and many more problems!

Joe they are going to run into the same problem as the Jeep rubicon with the four hybrid no sales ,its to loud and the engine works to hard,there is one guy on UA-cam who is the mechanic and he goes through everything and what he said was hybrids are great until they break then comes the problem,he said the 6 cylinder is the best for low noise and durability and space to repair the vehicle on the road or off road where the vehicle breaks down.
I'm hearing it'll be more like $72k....and for that much, I'd want more options for colors, wheels, etc...and I agree with you 100% the fender flares are much better than on the TRD Pro where they're painted.
I really like it. Good job and good modern powertrain. Hybrids are becoming somewhat of an industry standard, so no zonk on no v6. Being a trail hunter, maybe a splash of camo pattern to accent it?
Love the 4 runner. A few misses for me are no trail hunter badging on the seats, and the back of the seats look to generic. And the back cargo area should be rubber mat with seat back protection !!!
Toyota knows how to build a hybrid / turbo engine. They are reliable, quick, great torque, and great towing capability. This engine has been around for years now in their commercial Hino trucks and is now their go-to engine for long-term performance and reliability.
I feel like I would go for the TRD Pro, have wheels/tires for highway use and another set with tire / bead lock wheels. Trail hunter/over lander not really for rock crawling but go the rugged distance. If I’m tracking along correctly.
I love it. As always, I would rather have a Wrangler Rubicon, but I wouldn't mind ending up in this beast. Those grey seats with slight green tint are beautiful.
The Trailhunter and TRD Pro will be priced close to Land Rover Defenders yet lack Land Rover luxury and amenities. Before people start screaming "It will be far more reliable than the Defender!!" blah blah blah, will it be? How do you know? The reliability of the 4-cylinder hybrid engine, 8-spd transmission, stabilizer disconnect, etc. has neither been demonstrated nor proven, not even in the 4th Gen Tacoma.
The cost is getting pretty ridiculous. 55k used to buy a lot of car 3-4 years ago but now it’s entry level pricing. I wouldn’t mind spending 65-70k and just getting a new gx or even a used v8 gx under 40k miles for 50k
This thing is starting to look like a small Sequoia(2nd gen), No flat bed when chairs fold down so you have to find a way to level it if you want to sleep in the back while camping off road. One thing that bothers me a little is your mpg didn't really improve much while having a more complicated engine. Who knows how this will play out with 4runners reputation for reliability.
Prefer the styling of the 5th gen, prefer the NA V6 and 5-speed of the 5th gen, prefer the simplicity and proven reliability of the 5th gen, and prefer the price of the 5th gen. I guess that’s why I bought a ‘24 TRD ORP! That green is sharp though. Gotta give ‘em that.

Do the door pockets hold a s'well bottle or just a regular plastic 24 pack bottle? Does the rear have heated and ventilated seats? Is there storage under the rear? Nothing about the high load floor (or the first 10 inches of thin plastic lid). The low hanging rear tire does NOT help with departure angles. How is the spring rate? Does the rear handle the extra weight of a fully loaded rear plus a trailer? What is the mileage for the hybrid drive train and what does that mean in terms of range... Which also matters for overlanders. Any room under the hood for a second battery? .... But yes, the TrailHunter badge is cool and the color is nice.

As much as i love this big 3-row SUV, it really suffers from toyota's biggest weakness and that is: pricing. $60k+ for one of these is just insane.
