  • We revisit Laurel Lakes to find the road deteriorating since our last visit. There are new boulders to dodge and small slides on the shelf road creating off-camber sections tilting toward the edge. The infamous hairpin turn at the end is the site of a fatal rollover death of a Mammoth Lakes physician June, 2015.

How do you like your Nomad wheels? I’ve got them.

I really, really love these wheels. I never see them, I think they look great, and the built in deflator valves are so helpful. The rash ring protectors earned their keep for me last weekend when I hit some rocks and branches on an overgrown, probably unused trail near Mammoth. Check back, I am going to make a video short about the deflator valve feature soon. 🙂

@@JTOHV very cool to hear. I just got the rash guards too and looking to try them out in a couple weeks along the eastern sierras. I’ll watch for the video.

What happens when someone is coming DOWN from the Laurel Lakes on this 1 vehicle wide trail ? Biggest truck wins , or what ?

The etiquette is that the vehicle traveling uphill has the right of way. We try to look ahead as far as possible on the shelf road portion and wait out any oncoming vehicles. So far haven't had to back up. With potentially busy places like this most of the traffic is toward the lake in the morning and away in the afternoon. I wouldn't try to do the drive toward the lake in the afternoon, especially on a weekend.

They do this stuff in South America all the time on roads that have straight cliffs haha, they use buses and everything, I’ve took my regular motorcycle up mountains trails and dirt roads haha, I bet I could take my motorcycle up this but going down would be hard lol

This is NOT my idea of fun . There are way too many things that can go wrong...brakes fail , bad U-joint brakes & you lose the driveshaft , sliced tire goes flat , Been 4wheelin' my entire adult life & would not put myself in such a precarious & dangerous situation . But thanks for sharing your hair-raising trip.

I wholeheartedly agree. I don't recommend doing this or any remote drive solo as we did. Better to go in groups and with proper recovery gear. This video is not a good example to follow. I do bring tools, a full size spare, lots of recovery gear, food/water/fuel, etc. Plan to have a satellite phone soon. Still better to go with another rig.
