When I used to play a lot of wow, flying was this: 1. you buy the flying mastery. The higher it is, the more expensive it was. 2. you buy the flying mount. 3. you fly. The only hard part was getting the gold for flying, but by the time you did you felt like you earned it and you learnt how to get gold resonably by that time. Sure it's not as unique as what other games do now, but sometimes simple is best. If you want a more interesting method on flying mounts, look at Guild Wars 2 or Final Fantasy 14. One gives you the flying mount after you do the quests and raise it from an egg (skyscale), then it's yours forever on all characters on any region. FF14, you explore the map and do the 5 specific quests + story. Boom! Flying.
Obviously inflation in wow is not gonna help that method. But I agree GW2 really did a good job with their method. It's so much more satisfying and reasonable.
The only issue with GW2 was the amount of grind and pointless running around you had to do for it. But it was definitely worth it... also the flying mounts ACTUALLY have some mechanics to them instead of just being a fancy model with gamemaster-flight slapped onto it... theres literally no mechanics to it in WoW nor FF14, just press space bar and fly infinitely. Flying in GW2 is actually fun too... and the other mounts also have something special in them so its not like flying trumps ground mounts automatically. FF14 went by that issue by giving every mount flying, meanwhile WoW is still dragging 15 years behind... which is sad. I like WoW the most, but cant force myself to play a shitty game.
I really miss how simple WoW used to be, I tried getting back into Shadowlands recently and was so confused on what I needed to do with my character at lvl cap..Ive never had this issue with any other expansion since starting in Wrath.
In addition to the way you aquire your flying mounts in GW2, there is one important mechanical difference: You can't fly forever high above everything forever. Both griffon and skyscale force you to go to ground from time to time or being smart with their mechanics. So it is still possible to build geometry that blocks flying. But more likely the world geometry designed in a way with flying in mind, and the game mechanics don't make you want to skip everything that is going on on the ground, so you actually have reasons to unmount. Oh, and there are some enemies that can unmount you quite quickly if you don't pay attention. When you get flying in WoW you pretty much skip everything until you reach the planned location (or multiple locations, if you are farming ressources). Instead of unlocking the boring version of flying, you could have flying on a ressource bar which depletes pretty fast at the beginning of each expansion / new zone. Of the course of the time you gain some expansion / zone depending flight proficiency and learn new tricks (flight manouvers) that let you stay in the air longer. And you can do as much or little of that as you want, because instead of an on/off switch you just keep getting better and you can stop once you are happy with the flight time you gained.
@@iplayguitarfunky It's been that way for the past 2 expansions when it comes to being unnecessarily overcomplicated. That is part of the main criticism that the game gets with the whole "slapping systems on top of systems to fix other systems".
"Not even Blizzard would go so far as to make you grind flying on alts too." While I agree THIS TIME, never say never. Their depravity knows no bounds.
Asmongold pointed out that the achievement that gives flying in Zareth Mortis does not have a blue outline, which means it is not account wide. You actually do have to grind flying in Zareth Morits on your alts.
I really wonder why they just didn't go with "completes when we got your next monthly sub, b*t*h" for the research timers. At least that would be an honest statement about how ABK feels about their customers / players and ABKs motivations for these systems.
Had flight in every zone, day2 of Endwalker which was when I finished the final MSQ quest. Had flying fully unlocked for a zone once I had finished the MSQ in that zone
Which is good itself, but also FF is alot better at developing zones that fit flying. It feels like the WoW devs on the other hand really regret putting it in the game in the first place and are trying to socialize the player base into eventually removing it by making it annoying as hell to unlock it.
For every other FF expansion I unlocked flying immediately upon finishing the zone story. But I personally haven't unlocked flying in any Endwalker zone yet due to the long queues haha. I had to mainline the story to prevent being spoiled, then I went right into the harder content which didn't need flying. It's not that getting flying is hard or time consuming, it's just harder to find the time when it takes 2 hours to get online. It's a good problem to have I guess haha

@@ajaakola2 I dunno, I find the concept of Attunements alright. It gives a clear and somewhat open way for you to keep progressing in endgame. If they brought back attunements for raids/mythic+, made it tied to account wide achivements for each part (so you didn't have to re-attune a huge monstrous flowchart if you needed an alt in the raid that week or w/e) and that was your system for the expansion? Wouldn't be too bad. This is, of course, only if attunements was the system, and only if it wasn't also timegated like a lot of the systems now. If it was attunements on top of farming X for your borrowed power boots and then your Netherite Sockets need to be leveled by grinding a rep, it'd be even more shit. But just attunement? Giving you a breadcrumb trail of unlocking instances, raids, getting reputation with a specific faction to unlock the hard mode which naturally also gives you an increasing ilevel to gear yourself up as you run them? I never understood the devs obsession with locking flying in WOW. The idea that it makes the world feel more full is BS when you shard everyone into their own little zone with 5 people walk next to each other...
I don't understand why it isn't something like FF. Explore the map to find the currents, do a couple sidequests that are clearly marked, BOOM! All your mounts now fly in that zone.
That's their excuse. The real reason is so that all the story stuff and bs chores they make you do in the zones take longer. Literally everything in the game at this point is there to slow you down regardless of what you're trying to do.
Because making zones that use flying well takes effort *cough* Storm Peaks, Hyjal *cough*. The way they design their zones is designed to waste the most time with 100s of wimpy annoying enemies that if you ignore will swarm you to death. Flying renders that model and design obsolete so they have to make a pre-existing mechanic hard as fuck to get so only the most dedicated no lifers can get it within a reasonable amount of time.

Then it just slowly got worse towards release and I didn't realise at the time they'd removed the infinite floor thing, so it was tragically disappointing when me and a friend got into it excited to at least get stupid powerful, only to find out it just wasn't there, how slow and less built you got in the 8 or however many floors we had. Torghast is all I want in an MMORPG and I was so close to getting it, I do love FFXIVs PotD and HoH, but they're not the same, hopefully they can do something similar to Torghast in the future.
You know what really chaffs my buttocks? Everyone, even if they don't want to admit it to themselves KNOWS why this is such a pissant grind: To keep you subbed. I'm waiting to see the next expansion, if I don't like what I see I walk away for good & FFXIV is 'it' (My 'other game' is Destiny 2), but right now I'm not holding my breath, stuff like this really doesn't inspire confidence...
Not gonna lie, seeing stuff like this does not make me miss WoW in the slightest. It feels like they've really just given up on WoW as a real MMO and are turning it into a standard mobile MMO app. Endless grinding and no real content.
@@sgt391 It was a big part of why I stopped playing just after Castle Nathria released. The app grind-style content just made it that much easier to quit.
How to Unlock Fun in WoW 9.2: Do this, do this, do this, do this, do this and this, do this, wait a little, do this, wait, do this, wait, do this, wait, now fun, I mean flying is unlocked.
Not to make this about WoW vs FF14, which seems to happen when talking about Wow (you kinda need a frame of reference to judge something properly), but even if I quit ff14 today, after endwalker, I'll feel content, because I got a good story out of my time with the game and that feeling of satisfaction will stay with me. Among the make complaints I've heard about WoW is one about the story being bad. Really puts into perspective how important the RPG part is in an mmorpg.
Honestly what's even worse than the story being bad, which sucks but could almost be dismissed since people often play for the gameplay, is that systems like this will come in for a patch or two, lock something behind it that players want. Then people will farm it out, exhaustively, and by the time they get the thing to make things fun they already spent weeks or months farming and they're burnt out And by the time the next content rolls out, the system is tossed into the garbage and literally will not be relevant at all again and sometimes is taken out of the game entirely, making the feeling of wasting your time even WORSE 😭😭
9.2 doesn't make me feel compelled to choose between going back to wow or continuing with FF. With all the time I gave to wow, that's a hard thing to say.
It seems Blizzard would rather milk the game's remaining player base and bleed the game dry than fix the things that made players leave in the first place. Why make the game better when you can just ("hopefully") get people to play for longer by artificially stretching out the content to last twice as long or more with time gates. And now that they've basically retconned all of Sylvanas's character progression and autonomy out of existence, they've made it impossible to care about the story, killing the last thing that a casual player might have cared about. This is what total lack of direction and creative through-line looks like. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if someone told me that, with each new expansion, the entire staff is swapped out for a fresh team of people with their own ideas and zero willingness to respect what came before.
It's absolutely ridiculous you have to unlock flying for the second time in an expansion, its fucking brutal and unnecessary. Its another big fuck you hoop for the players to jump through. When you reach max level of an expansion you should be able to fly, not wait till halfway through the expansion for the privilege.
Yeah, they aren't designing an MMO anymore. They are designing a Mobile App with Dungeon, PvP, and Raiding modes attached to it. Its not about "fun", its preying on addictive personality traits with a heavy emphasis on "engagement metrics".
Legit my favorite part of ffxiv is crafting and gathering and even going for the super grindy achievements involving those But I ironically never feel like my time is wasted and I always feel good about the time I spent
The mere fact that the patch BIG FEATURE is a series of unlockable mini-buffs and recourses on a map is in it itself quite telling of what they decided to do with the game
It hurts so much to see a game I love fall apart like that. All the feedback, all the wishes.. ignored. I really do wonder if it is the toxic minority that makes the devs not listen. Someone on reddit recently posted about how Yoshi P asked the (most likely japanese) playerbase to not attack the devs. You could see how Ion got standoffish when Mike asked some tougher questions in a professional manner. I think at this point, blizzard's devs are just so done with it all. There's no passion, no love left in it and it shows.

Flying is account wide, but you have to finish the entire achievement on one character only (which you probably would do anyway), but you need to farm up currency/spend time if you want the bonus traits on each alt which is...weird.
Double legendaries are gated behind rep which you farm via dailies. That you unlock faster by unlocking dailies with this system. Not directly related to double legendaries, but related anyway. Also, the achievement you get for the flying its character specific (doesnt have the blue title that account wide achievements have).

When I used to play a lot of wow, flying was this:
1. you buy the flying mastery.

Had flight in every zone, day2 of Endwalker which was when I finished the final MSQ quest. Had flying fully unlocked for a zone once I had finished the MSQ in that zone
Which is good itself, but also FF is alot better at developing zones that fit flying. @@ajaakola2 I dunno, I find the concept of Attunements alright. It gives a clear and somewhat open way for you to keep progressing in endgame.
That's their excuse. The real reason is so that all the story stuff and bs chores they make you do in the zones take longer. Literally everything in the game at this point is there to slow you down regardless of what you're trying to do.
Because making zones that use flying well takes effort *cough* Storm Peaks, Hyjal *cough*. When it came to farming Prime parts and whatnot, there was no limit on how much you could farm. Need some keys to get into the missions that dropped Prime parts? Go farm the normal missions that drop keys with rather generous rates. Easy peasy. You wanted to do it? You did it. And I liked that. Especially that these Prime parts could then be sold for the game's premium currency, too. It was probably the best free to play experience I have ever had in a game.
I have an idea for earning flying next expansion, there can be these green energy nodes from wind elementals spread throughout the map, we can call them aero-nodes.
Players can detect these nodes via the use of an aero-sextant.
wow thats a great idea I wonder if any other game has done it before.
Maybe you can add some of the special current are behind quest that maybe bring player to the zone or dungeon. Never see that in any other game
@@francisforgues8464 perhaps some sort of Aero-Node Compass to help direct you to the Aero-Nodes
Nah that seems way to fast. Lets lock each aero node behind a quest that is timelocked to a 2 week event
@@lootmaster1337 you also need to be exalted with each relevant faction per fragment. And then buy the seeker for about 160k gold, which you need a new one from each faction.
I think BFA & SL have shown that Blizzard honestly does not care to try and make WoW good anymore. They are just riding the passive money train as hard as possible from all the people who wont quit no matter how bad things get.
wait only those 2 expansion showed blizzard not giving a fuck? pretty sure theres more
I remember when I first unlocked flying. It wasn't very good until I got the faster flying. Then blizzard locked it again every expansion after that and added a new more complex list of requirements each time. Every time I get more mad about it. Imagine unlocking flying 7 times.
the most fun i've had in shadowlands before quitting in 9.1, was when me(DH) friend1(Mage) and friend2(Priest) did torghast together. I stacked the mawrat explosion power, mage got the mage table summons mawrats power and priest got the rat duplication when mindcontrolling power. we oneshot the bosses after a few minutes of prep every time due to how many mawrats were exploding at once

It's a good game now. It was s rough start.
@@davidlazerz8564 Yeah and the fact that PvE is the only content left in the game shows how much it sucks. Now the game is only for carebears who wanna sit and do math equations to kill pre scriped events that a 9 year old could do.
How is being anti-wow even an insult at this point. I 100% want the game to fail because I truly thin it will take a massive collapse for any meaningful changes to be made. A lot of people will need to lose their jobs before WoW subscribers are treated like part of a community and not like pay pigs.
I’m 100% behind this. WoW needs a massive collapse. Nothing has really changed because so many people still play this garbage. It would also give other MMOs a chance to grow. Imagine a world without WoW… A man can dream.

Flying is essentially unlocked day 1 of a ffxiv expansion. Just have to do the msq and find all the aether currents. Had it all unlocked in 4 days of just playing the game.
You can literally get flying for a zone as soon as you turn in the zones final msq
@@assassin93 This is how it was for me, just grabbed the currents on the go because they were pretty much wherever the main story quests took you, side quests too took me like 5 minutes each at most, got flying the moment i handed in the last msq quest of the zone every single time
In ff you get it immediately after you finish a zone. So you can fly in areas before you even finish EW.
Well you still have to find the currents on the map, but they're usually pretty easy to track down.
@@JackgarPrime they literally give you a compass to guide you straight to them. 🤣

Flying should be a simple gold spend of just put it behind the story if you're that hell bent on stopping people from having fun. Just say for the main Xpacs you must complete all main story lines and for the patches, complete the intro quests into the zones.
"commit to deligent farming" Yup, it's officially a 2nd job, lol - so you can work after your work \o/

As a FF14 player it feels good that I have never seen such a bs menu in my game for anything let alone flying, 14 is the gold standard now. Want to fly? You can get it in like less than an hour after completing a zone story day 1 of an expansion release.
Yeah while the first two zones as always "split" so you can't access every current on your first visit, every zone after that I can comfortably get flying *while doing the zone story*
Honestly I couldn't play an mmo without a type of flying now, GW2 so used to being able to glide without a mount, or mount for special flight that requires input for the best movements. Meanwhile WoW double gates it behind a new grind every time? Why? Other mmo's are doing it SO much better.
Yeah... It really makes you wonder how a MMO that require expansion purchase + subscription, can get away with "pay to win (with extra steps)" using the WoW Token, and mobile freemium content... 😕 What exactly is our money going to, if not actual worthwhile content? 😅 The whole reason behind locking a MMO behind a subscription, is so we DON'T have this type of "content" in our game...
Blizzard " we hear you , our players , and we are listening "
Players " are you really though? cuz it seems like you skim over OUR ideas and CHOOSE the ideas that are the worst ever "

You ain't thinking like a CEO. The downside is that the subscription model puts an upper limit on how much money you can make per player. Your profits can only ever be "player base x $15 per month". Microtransactions though? oooh, there's theoretically no upper limit to how much money you can make.
I, like most people in these comments more than likely, have played WoW for a very long time.
After spending 1 month playing FFXIV, it’s clear as day how much more the devs care about and respect the players time. They make it an enjoyable experience from start to finish, and you WANT to play more. Playing alts is FUN.
WoW has just lost all luster it ever had to me. Whether it be the higher ups dictating the free-to-play model, or its truly how the current dev team feels, who knows. But it’s soulless.
I still raid in TBC, but mostly due to the fact that it isn’t subject to current design philosophy. It’s not perfect, but it’s a way to play with friends without all this stupid shit.

Sad that content creators that are still loyal to wow are forced to compromise with a clearly awful system instead of like Mike said, getting angry and calling it bullshit, because it really is. Wow players have gotten too passive and I feel like the only ones left playing are the beaten wives that just simply cant leave or think there's anything left salvaging.
Depends on your outlook. My friends and I think other MMOs are certainly better quality these days, but we all have established WoW characters already so we just find ways to have fun together, rather than everyone shifting over to someone else and potentially losing a few of the crew. Wow: we're making a alien zone!
Grassy fields and water you can walk on.
FF: We're making something "alien":
Change the sound direction for the entire region and everything in it and possibly UI elements for the creatures in it too if appropriate. Also you know, actually makes things different from previous places we've visited.
Blizzard: “Are we so out of touch? No. It’s the players who are wrong.”
Require to do the entire zone, every drop of content and when theres fuck all to do "Here's flying, congratulations". Like an empty pie tin after a huge disappointing meal.
"And that is how we arrived at our time honored modus operandi." - Blizzard, probably.
Player : "What must we do."
Blizzard : "Everything."
I look forward to Preach taking on diligent farming to play WoW again.
How is a bunch of small power increases in zereth mortis and through conduits/soulbinds any different than the old vanilla talent trees? Weren't those redesigned to be more impactful? Yet we've been bombarded with borrowed power systems that, at a base level, are extremely similar to old talent trees.
Luckily this didn't end up being how you unlocked flying in ZM.
However, I'm pretty sure Blizzard only put in this system on the PTR to then change it later so they could say "Look, we listened!" after seeing how much they've talked recently about "ZM was and Dragonflight is going to be all about listening to the community".
Most alien zone?
I’m more and more convinced these guys have never even played this game.
It seems like Blizz had had a bunch of transfers from King. Like there are a bunch of devs with a bunch of mobile game backgrounds and they think taking finish timers and all that are just a part of how games work.
"We want our players to be commited to the task they set themselves"

But if we have flying we can’t enjoy the water we mysteriously walk on…in a fantasy game….with already available water walking…
I don't know about y'all, but I'm feeling real good about not being invested in this shit show anymore.
I don't particularly like WoW as, from experience, groups are very picky about how and what you play, but I adore Rogue-Likes and prefer solo content, so when Torghast got shown off I couldn't shut up about it to my friends. I was so exited that WoW had something I could enjoy and I assumed it wouldn't become old content as it kept scaling in difficulty, so I was very ready to level every single class and pay monthly solely for Torghast.

Then people will farm it out, exhaustively, and by the time they get the thing to make things fun they already spent weeks or months farming and they're burnt out
And by the time the next content rolls out, the system is tossed into the garbage and literally will not be relevant at all again and sometimes is taken out of the game entirely, making the feeling of wasting your time even WORSE 😭😭
Blizz devs live in Anaheim, CA. A field *is* the most alien thing they can think of!
Commit to diligent farming, LMFAO.

Legit my favorite part of ffxiv is crafting and gathering and even going for the super grindy achievements involving those
But I ironically never feel like my time is wasted and I always feel good about the time I spent
The mere fact that the patch BIG FEATURE is a series of unlockable mini-buffs and recourses on a map is in it itself quite telling of what they decided to do with the game
Can blizzard please stop having ingenious ideas like this..... I'm really sick of my high ffxiv queue times and ideas like this won't help
These are worth watching just for preaches reaction. Totally honest and and upfront.
