    From someone coming from traditional film industries the most annoying thing is the tone mapping. It’s my understanding that it doesn’t happen when shooting log. But I have an iPhone 13 and it’s annoying that I can’t turn off specific features as I’d like. Having to buy a 1000-2000$/€ device to get rid of a software thing is… unthinkable

    Good video. Another annoying iPhone Quirk is wind noise when you are vlogging. Apple should sell a special vlogging phone case that is designed to cover all the mic holes. Over each mic hole there should be space to put a chunk of foam to dampen the wind noise. Similar to how the GoPro has a foam cover to kill the wind noise. However, it's not necessary to wrap the entire phone in foam, like GoPro does. Just three small chunks of foam placed over the three mic holes will do. A third party phone case manufacturer could make such a case as well.
    Using an external mic with wind muff is okay for vloggers, but these external mics can be easily damaged, suck battery power, and they make the phone big and clumsy to use. Given how good the iPhone mics are, why not use them. All they need is some wind dampening.

    Well explained. Thank you for the quasi workarounds. I switched from Samsung to iPhone 2 years ago due to designer app selections. I’m still wondering why Apple continues to lag behind. Creatives need options. I often feel handcuffed trying to produce an attractive result. I’m sick of hearing “you can do that with a Samsung phone but not an iPhone”. Let’s do this Apple

    I personally hate overly sharp images in any situation. I love some of the imperfections because it gives your video/film personality. Thanks to your video, I shot my most recent video using a pro-mist filter. I almost never use it and should use it more. I love HDR, especially with the type of videos I make. UA-cam converts HDR to SDR for those who can't view HDR.

      Yeah, I’ve had bad luck uploading HDR and then having platforms convert it. I know that’s what it supposed to do, but for whatever reason I can rarely get it to work right. But that’s great that you can.

    I’ve been loving the Beast Cam app with their stabilization feature for when I don’t have an gimbal handy or don’t want to pull it out.

    The only way to get something fixed is to complain. Thanks good stuff as always Blake!! ✌️

    Here's a 'quirk' I found a work-around for: When shooting, if your battery goes into the yellow, the iPhone will begin to drop frames like mad. Even without laborious LOG or app induced picture profiles going. Since the footage maintains sync by audio samples rather than FPS, it'll seem okay until you get neck-deep in an edit. To avoid this, KEEP IT PLUGGED INTO THE WALL, or run it off an external battery pack, that keeps it between 85% and 100% charge. This will help nip dropped frames in the bud. This applies to other smartphones and tablets, too. The only time I've encountered problems while using this tip, is when shooting 4k @24fps in FilmicPro with Logv2 going. That setting really gives the iPhone a brutal workout.

      Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I’ve never had that happen with yellow. Are you going into Low Power Mode? That can definitely cause issues. I have plugged the phone in when shooting though and it does get warm, but otherwise as you say it does work.

      @@iphoneographers Yellow battery, whether in LPM or on full will behave like this-however, I AM running an older iPhone 8 and an SE mk2. And a 2018 iPad 9.7. That prolly has a lot to do with it 😎

    Another quirk on 14 Pro (mine at least) happens when you go from the 0.5x to 3x camera when taking photos. Once the transition to 3x has taken place, you wil see a momentary ghosting effect around the edges of the frame which then goes away after about a second. The best way to describe the effect is that it looks like faint vignette effect. Any comments?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  Рік тому +1

      Yes, have seen that too. Pretty sure it’s just the dynamic tone mapping adjusting. Although the way Apple uses software magic to switch between the different cameras is great, it can be a little bit funky, depending on what you’re doing.

    I hear iOS17 will add a “lock white balance when shooting video” and I’m hopeful they will fix the obvious over-sharpening issue too. I’m surprised they have ignored this for so long - given it’s the number one complaint since the release of iPhone 13. Looking back over my images - I have to go back to the iPhone 10 to see reasonably sharpened images.

      @@MickaLuna I sent a reply with link that seems to have disappeared. You can Google that stuff and see several videos and sites that reference this addition to iOS 17. I hope that helps.

    Skin tones!!! I feel like they are too red and can have blocky artifacts. What do you do to help maintain good skin tones?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, right out of the camera things can be overly saturated. That’s one reason I do like to shoot log with FiLMiC Pro or with Cinema P3. And if I’m doing anything more serious, I’ll typically shoot a color chart. But then otherwise I do always do color correction in post.

      For best results use a third-party app that locks the camera choice. The native app combines cameras and will also switch to macro mode (but you can turn that off).

    Hi, what about variable frame rate? How do you deal with it? I just bought iP15 Pro Max, shooting 4K ProRes Apple Log in default camera app and Blackmagic Cam. All shots are VFR. The moment I import them into Premiere Pro or DaVinci I'm getting little jitters here and there. How do you deal with that? Do you convert your shots from VFR to CFR? Thank you

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  10 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, VFR is something we have to deal with as all phones shoot that way. However, the only issues I’ve had really are audio sync or audio drift in Premiere Pro. If you have jitters in my experience that’s from shooting with a quick pan or a camera bump. But VFR doesn’t cause that. But Premiere doesn’t always play iPhone shot footage back smoothly, especially on older machines. One other thing I often do in Premiere is select a clip and then Modify it to be an exact 23.98 or 24FPS. Lastly, if you don’t want to work with VFR, then yes, I transcode to ProRes first. Hope that helps.

    • @AxeliTeh
