  • 6 years ago Apple took a giant dump in the filmmaking punch bowl with the release of the iPhone 8/X due to the single feature that crippled the iPhone as a pro video camera: dynamic tone mapping. Even Steven Soderbergh begged for Apple to change this ONE THING after his Netflix film 'High Flying Bird' turned into a living nightmare in post as a result. His pleas were ignored. That is until the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max were announced in September 2023.
Does Apple Log on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max finally absolve Apple of their egregious crimes against mobile filmmaking? In this video we take a deep dive and see whether Apple have finally made a TRUE video camera that can be embraced by professionals?
Can you imagine Sony or Blackmagic Design shipping a video camera that doesn't let you lock exposure? Unimaginable right? Apple did this for 6 years and got away with it.

It's like you've managed to make Apple both proud and nervous in under 10 minutes. 🍏👀 -And I love it! This is one of the the most interesting, genuine and informative videos I've seen, not just about mobile film making...but so many fascinating points made! LOG is absolutely a game changer ( I hate that term ) but it simply is...And now that you have posed such an interesting question, regarding the possibility of Apple releasing an update for older iPhone models (like the iPhone 13 Pro and 14 Pro series) to enable LOG shooting, I would love to see if we could somehow get an answer to this question!?!?!?!? from my understanding Apple has a history of providing significant camera and photo-related updates through software. For instance, features like Night Mode and Deep Fusion were introduced to older models through iOS updates, suggesting that substantial camera functionality can be extended to older models + Older iPhone models, like the iPhone 13 Pro and 14 Pro, have advanced camera sensors and powerful processors (like the A15 Bionic chip in iPhone 13 Pro series). These components are capable of handling high-resolution images and complex computational photography tasks. LOG format shooting primarily involves capturing a wider dynamic range and flat color profile, which is more about software processing than hardware limitations...So can apple make a lot of people who may not be able to afford the new iphone VERY HAPPY...or will the business perspective, of introducing new features exclusively on newer models to encourage consumers to upgrade...be the end of it??? Anyone care to chime into this??

Thanks so much! I don't think we will get an answer, sadly - but I live in hope. Good points you raise about night mode and deep fusion. Let's see what iOS 18 brings.

I'm glad that someone can finally explain this, because when I complained about the exposure changing, people claimed that all digital cameras did this, clearly they didn't know what they were talking about.

I would love a mode like h264 that disables all the same things but without me having to post apply a lut and deal with huge files. is there no way to just disable tone mapping, maybe using a 3rd party app?

There is no way to override tone mapping outside of Apple Log capture. Third party apps have no ability to override it.

I read elsewhere that the dynamic tone mapping was greatly reduced but not completely disabled. Anyone know anything about this?

That may be the case, but in my experience it seems to be as good as being completely disabled. I've not been able to detect any exposure shifts in Apple Log.

Unfortunately, you can’t use an iPhone at all in the summer on a sunny day because the screen goes darker and darker until it soon shuts down entirely until the phone cools off.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Like many small body cameras, iPhones can overheat in direct sunlight, a problem not exclusive to them. I've experienced similar issues with high-end Sony and Canon mirrorless cameras, as well as Android devices. To mitigate this, I've used a cooling accessory from Amazon (amzn.to/3S0b5Ba), which helps but is cumbersome.
Regarding iPhone thermals, models prior to the iPhone 11 Pro had lesser heat management. The iPhone 11 Pro marked a significant improvement, and newer models have advanced further. Nonetheless, it's important to consider the device's limits and ambient temperature when shooting. Filmmaker Sean Baker notably used a technique of swapping phones and cooling them in a fridge during filming!
      Horses for courses...

A small shade attached to the phone might help with this, as well, and would be simpler than this cooling tech - should be relatively easy to jury rig but perhaps they also exist. A white phone or white case might also make a good bit of difference.
