Another great way to polish washers without removing too much material is using a strop. Just stropping the washers in a circular motion..leaves a beautiful finish!
Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.
You are definitely the Bob Ross of water stone sharpening
Thank you for sharing your knowledge brother. As a husband and father who works to be as independent as possible for his family. I salute you Kyle. All the best to you and yours. 🙏🏻
Good for you, friend! I wish you all the best!
You are never too old to learn new things….thankyou for sharing your knowledge and skills. My kitchen and “Fishing” knives will be getting some attention.
I *love* my Delica. I bought a deep pocket clip for it and wear it every day.
Very nice job, Kyle. Talking about really freshening up a knife, you did!
I just purchased a Kershaw 1776OLSW with the 20CV blade. My neighbor had one that I sharpened for him. I was so impressed with it I had to get one. It took me a little while to figure out how to sharpen it. I used light pressure on a 1200 grit diamond stone & then went to a 4000 grit Shapton ceramic. Since I invested in the Shapton stones (500, 1000, 4000), I'm finally cutting paper like you do, not leaving any fibers sticking up. Thanks for teaching me that trick. I'm an old man now & enjoy watching your videos & seeing the talent God has given you! You have taught me so much! Thank you. Love your truck too.
Thank you Tom! That really means a lot, and I'm so encouraged that as an 'old man', you're still improving your skill set and learning new tricks. So many people seem to lay down and give up. Awesome!
The Delica has been my primary edc for the better part of 20 years. I started with a saber ground Delica, moving to a FFG with brown scales, one with an Emerson Opener, and for the last couple years the K390 FFG. I’ve own plenty of other knives including some fairly expensive folders. But the Delica keeps making it back into my pocket.
Very cool! I'd love to have a collection of them in various grinds and colors!
Delica has been my favorite EDC for a few years also.
My Delica looks just like that one - before the work Love what you did! One of my favorite EDC
I had one, and lost it recently, loved that blade and i will miss it until the day i get a new one
I am always amazed watching you sharpening knives. That knife cleaned up very well. Have a great night Kyle.
Thanks Roy!
The first Spyderco I ever bought, the Renegade said right in the box, wash it, dry it, oil it lightly. Still do that but I blow out the scales with compressed air after washing, clean the works out with a tooth brush and Dawn, oil with mineral oil
Did doing this video bring back some nostalgia? I remember watching the video from you sharpening that knife from what’s now almost considered “back in the day.”
You're the Bob Ross of sharpening. Very smooth, enjoyable to watch and listen to, thanks!
Thanks for listening!
Your skill set and level of detail is very respectable. Very few people are willing to take the time to become that capable. Keep up the great videos.
Thank you!
just got my delica. (I'm new to knives) looking forward to having this one for a while. Great video!
This exact model and color is one of my EDC knives and I love it. I was so excited to see you feature it!
Such a fun knife!
I love this Kind of knife sharpening/restoration Videos so much
Fantastic video !!!!!!!!!!!!!
For my bronze washers I like to wipe them down with gun cleaning solvent, then polish them with an old strop with 1 micron diamond spray. Gets them smooth as glass.
Killed it !!
you always do nice work with fun and good spirit thank you
Thank you. I love watching an expert.
Makes my wanna break out my spyderco. Nice work.
I love the color of that knife . I have an older buck . That I used for deer hunting that I need to do that with . It's a folding knife . I cant remember the model of it . Love your videos Kyle! Take care and stay safe my friend!!
Thanks Troy! Congrats on the Buck. That's worth the mess!
Came out great. Good for another 100,000 miles.
Nice job Kyle!
If you like the delica I would recommend the Para 3 light weight
The first thing I had to do to my first Delica was polish the clip!
What a splendid piece! 🤤🤤🤤🤤
I once bought a generic version of this knife about 15 years ago, from a store where everything was £1, but I misplaced it while moving house, and never saw it again 🥺🥺🥺🥺
However, as for it being ''The BEST EDC Knife'', I have to respectfully disagree... At the same time as I had this, I also had a Victorinox Climber (which is in my other hand as I type this 😍😍😍😍🤤🤤🤤🤤) and I would suggest that the Climber may be the best EDC knife: And, not merely as a biased personal preference, but, because it has so many additional tools, over this knife's single blade...
Before I had the Climber, I had (I *think* it is called a Tinker) which is the same as the Climber, but it lacks the parcel hook at the back, and the scissors at the front... I had had *that* knife, maybe 10-15 years, and carried it daily, before losing it one day on a bus (I know that that's where I dropped it, because I'd used it to clean under my nails while on the bus, and, when I got to my studio, it was no longer in my pocket 💔💔💔💔😫😫😫😫
But, rather than ordering another 'Tinker'(?) I had read about the Climber, and thought that having a pair of scissors in my pocket would come in handy, so I ordered myself a Climber...
Now, it *did* take a while for the Climber, with its extra width, to 'feel familiar' in my hand, because I'd carried the 'Tinker'(?) for so long, but, almost immediately, I found myself using the scissors for things, so I definitely found it to be more functional and useful than the 'Tinker'(?), and since buying it, I very rarely have to use any other 'thing', as it's always been sufficient for any task I've encountered 🙏🙏🙏🙏
A couple of unorthodox uses I've found for it, is, I tend to drink a particular brand of energy drink, as the taurine content acts as a liver and gallbladder supplement, but for some reason, every so often, I'll receive a box of them where, lifting the ring-pull won't actually open the can completely, only 'pop the seal'... And I've found that by using the bottle opener to press down on that tab, with the notch of the tool against the lip of the can, and then running it around the can's edge, with the notch on the lip of the can as a guide, the tip of the bottle-opener, is in the perfect position to thus press down, and open the can's tab completely 👍👍👍👍
Additionally, when the corkscrew is lifted, there's a hole between the metal liner, and the plastic scale, which is perfect for holding a one inch dress-making pin, and that is another thing which I find myself using a lot...
If I was to ever break or lose this one, I wouldn't replace it with anything other than another Climber, and thus, I would submit the Climber for consideration as the Best EDC knife because; I immediately noticed it being *more useful* than its 'Tinker'(?) predecessor, it is almost always sufficient for any daily task, and, because I wouldn't replace it with anything other than another Climber 👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏
But of course, to each his or her own preferences and needs, and, 'your milage may vary'... 🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍👍
[Edit to add] Another reason why I would consider the Climber to be a superior knife to my Delica-Clone, is two-fold: Before I lost it, I still found myself almost exclusively using my Climber for tasks, and, when I lost it, even though it would only have cost me £1 to replace, I simply never used it enough to even consider it worth replacing... 🙈🙈🙈🙈 When I dropped my 'Tinker'(?) on the bus, that was a proper ''oh Damn!!!'' moment, and with a near-hysterical need to *Immediately* replace it with another (albeit an 'upgraded version' with the parcel hook and scissors) as soon as humanly possible. But my Delica-Clone, while it was of course a shame to lose something, there was absolutely zero urgency to replace it. And, even now, while on the one hand I do occasionally find myself wondering if I should order myself another, I almost immediately talk myself out of it, with the simple ''but you'd never actually *use it* ...'' ... 🙈🙈🙈🙈
Good job Kyle keep it up
Thanks Kyle, i did send you an email about a knife i had needing some luv. It has been some time since you replied thing got in the way. Will reply soon.
Hah was just watching an old video of you freshening up the edge on this very knife, After that a watched the rural living video and bam, a fresh video on the spyderco. Dude thanks for the amazing content that you put out.
Thank you for watching!!
I noticed that you have a protruding heel on this knife, while in a previous restoration you reduced the heel to make a level cutting surface. How do you decide whether to keep or remove some of the heel?
Do you have a video of sharpening a karambit or hawksbill style blade?
Also, not sure if it’s just luck. But I have been trying to sharpen with water stones on and off for a year or so. And finally have gotten my best edge ever on a bench made 940 after watching some of your videos. I had more trouble with the smaller folding knives than with the larger Japanese style knives for some reason.
Thank you for the informative and easy to follow videos.
Oh man, Kyle, you made that knife look new again. I love it. Good work my brother ! Give a big hello to all of your beautiful family from Ontario 🙂👋
My Dad and brother just visited Toronto for a few days, mainly to take in a Jays game. I said let me know if you run into trouble up there. I know just the right fella' to visit! Thanks for watching, Chris.
@@kyle_noseworthy lol, thats awesome, they were in my neck of the woods and your wife's old stomping grounds. I hope they had a great experience !! I used to go to quite a few Jay's games in the day. Lots of fun. Good for them
I also have a blue Delica 4 in vg10 as well, it was my first Spyderco I got as a gift from my wife several years ago now. I like your idea of polishing the pocket clip, Kyle. Anyway, another great video that I enjoyed watching and learning from as always. Cheers!
Sweet gift! Very cool wife!
I really like VG 10, so easy to sharpen
Nice job. That was pretty much a total refurb and the knife looks and performs great. They're well made but you brought a lot of skills and knowledge to bear and it shows. I have at least two or three folders I really like myself and I don't mind lavishing a little extra care on them, really tune 'em up.
Hi love your videos, what are your thoughts on diamond plate stones.
I also have a Russian pro sharp gadget sharpening system but find getting the stone holding bar at the right angles also what is the angle for standing grinds please
Enjoy your videos. Have you ever worked on an Emerson? They have a different blade geoomentry with the bevel one just one side. I would love to see a video on these knives. Keep up the good work.
Great video - I like using the toothbrush for those little cleaning jobs too. The only thing is I can't seem to get that Spray9 taste out of my mouth for at least two or three weeks following.
Better Than Factory, Turned Out Awesome, Thanks Kyle ! ATB T God Bless
Thanks Terry!
I've got a Buck Vantage Alaskan Guide on the way right now. Always been a big Buck fan but there are so many great knives out there now. I picked up a DMT DiaSharp fine stone to help keep my blades sharp
That is a SWEET knife!
Water stone vs diamond, which does better? I'm still learning how to sharpen knives. What would you start with? There are so many different knife sharpeners that it can be hard to choose.
Man you oughta try the k390 version. $115 usd here, with a 64-65 HRC, 9% vanadium, ultra clean böhler tool steel. Such a great value. Love my spyderco backlocks. They can take some serious abuse.
Great video Kyle. Inspiration for me to clean and sharpen my EDC knives. I mostly carry a Benchmade Osborne 940. What dressing stone do you use? I’ve been cleaning my whetstones with a Japanese Eraser stone but I like the dressing stone you use. Thanks again.
It’s a Naniwa Nagura A-206 Dressing Stone 600 grit. I plan to pick one up also. Cheers.
Shooter is dead on! It's a great little stone, Stephen! I love it.
@@Shooter4547 Thank you very much.
Look sharp, be sharp, IS sharp!!!
I used to hate on Spyderco, I didn't like the look, then I watched a video on UA-cam about how good they are, I finally bought a para 3, and I couldn't believe how well it fit in my hand and how high quality they are, now I won't carry anything else
Where can I get a sharpening stone like the one your using ?
I'm assuming EDC stands for "every day carry"?
The chickens are on strike. 😂
haha Perhaps so! Darn unions!
Do you put compound on shiny leather side strops? When I do (with green compound), it just flakes straight off again.
I don't put it on polished leather. I keep that clean
Add some mineral oil to the compound and create a thick-ish paste and wipe it on, you don't need much.
Or heat the strop up and smear it around it'll embed slightly into the strop.
Sometimes if my strop is getting a little lumpy, I will heat a breakaway utility blade up and do some stropping passes over it and it'll clear those lumps up easy.
How much do you charge to sharpen?
If you need a saltwater knife, I recommend Spyderco H1 series, serrated not standard. Neither rusted, but the standard blade got dull way to easy. It seemed like I'd cut 3 pieces of rope and it would be dull, never had that problem with the serrated blade.
The H1 is sweet, although I would go for the straight edge. Rope is BRUTAL on knife edges, so serrated is the better choice if you're cutting a lot of rope. I don't have that task at hand often
What kind of dressing stone do you use?
Its a naniwa nagura I believe
Thanks ! I just found a "Joyce Chen" stainless cleaver at Goodwill for $3. Nothing looks very worn but the factory grind looks very imbalanced from side to side.
Perhaps your viewers are familiar and can tell me anything about this brand ?
Joyce Chen…a name I hadn’t thought of in over 50 years. She was my grad ass’t psychology teacher when I was a freshman in college!! Probably not the same person, ‘cause China’s got a LOT of people! 😅
I just throw mine in the DW with the blade open once a month. Then go to the strop.
Na para 3 better lock better steel thicker for man hands a true carry work knife. Take my para3 or benchmade 940-2 to work and work in mud sand rain fun fun.
I do love my 940!
hey Kyle how you doin
Fantastic!
A good EDC needs a deep pocket clip. Cheers!
Right? It's not hard to find deep carry clips for Spyderco knives, but still, would it be so difficult for spyderco to put an extra clip? It doesn't help that with the stock one you have almost 1 inch sticking out of your pocket.
If it’s a good knife and you want to keep it… take off the clip and keep your knife at the bottom of a pocket !
If you pull a knife out at dinner.... Lol
Your a master of what you do and I appreciate it but damn if your teeth aren’t horrific. Lol
Hey kile🤣🤪🧟
Not another knife!!!!!
