    I reguard myself as a reasonably good knife sharpener, but i allways beat myself up over the small facets left, generally on my weak sharpening side. Its nice to see a professional such as yourself also has that. As inconsequential as it is, I strive for perfection. Thank you

    Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

I have an Osborne in similar condition after hand surgery last year which has stopped my sharpening for a while. Can’t wait to get it back to mint condition again.     i have a 940 in m4 and i took it to a full zero grind before i put an edge on it which thinned out the blade a lot and now it cuts really nice. i have an aftermarket emerson wave attachment for it and i took it all apart and polished a lot of the flats and cutouts and parts because benchmade left a lot of rough areas. the 940 has always been an aggravating knife for me because i never liked the way it cuts because its like a wedge but i have one which i put a lot of work into and now its really slick.

    The highest grit I take any of my own EDC knives to is 2000 ceramic. Then I finish with green compound on my strop. I've never felt the need to go anything beyond that for my daily needs anyway...

    Really enjoy your sharpening videos Kyle. I use the same stones, 320, Shapton 1000 and then 4000 before hitting the leather strop. I sharpened my 940 last weekend. You have taught me the basics and I now use these stones on my chisels and plane blades as well. There is something therapeutic hand sharpening with whetstones. Thanks as always. Cheers

    Thank you for using the light to exaggerate the shadow effect!
    The example was perfect!
    When I've tried to use a stone, I've always tried to 'feel' the edge, which, um, hasn't worked so well for me. :)
    I can also immediately see that I've been trying to use stones that are way too small, or rather, I think I've been using a small stone incorrectly.

      Tormek is a beautiful tool. Love the T4 & the T8, easy to give the stone the grit one wants and the leather wheal is also a beautiful thing. It's like a modern take on the sharpening stones almost everyone had in their garden back in the day :) The blue Tormek stones and the diamond ones are also fantastic. Personally I like the Tormek T4 a lot better than the Work Sharp Ken Onion, but I can see the convenience in size.

    Kyle, Just want to say, excellent job with the info you provide. I found myself wondering 3 or 4 times in the video about something and almost immediately you covered it. Truly impressive.
    And well, since you asked what we'd want to see you sharpen.... I'm going to throw a big one out there and say, sharpen a katana. Mostly because I enjoy jokes. I don't expect you to do it or anything, I'm just more of a sword guy than a knife guy.

    Glad I didn't get into wet stones im too impatient, kme knife sharpener is much faster and gives a absolute perfect edge. Got the same knife for work.

    Very well done. I've kind of tried to use the shadow trick in the past, but I often don't have lighting in the right spot to make it work well. I'm still very new to sharpening, but I usually just try to feel the angle with my hands, and so far that has worked surprisingly well. I'd love to see you sharpen a knife with a recurve blade. I have a few recurve folders and fixed blades that I really ought to sharpen, but I'm not quite certain how to tackle it with freehand sharpening. I think I may buy a diamond sharpening rod to do it, but I'd be interested to see your process for it.

    Awesome edge for an EDC blade. Like you, I use my
    pocket knife to cut cardboard, paper, wire,wood, apples or cheese on any given day. Thats plenty sharp for that!

    Love my 940, carried one every day for the last 5+ years. One thing that may help to sharpen them is the heel/choil mod. Where the cutting edge starts is usually behind the plunge grind (notice how the edge bevel really widens/flares at the heel) and can cause part of the edge to lift off the stone. So you use a round stone/file/dremel bit to grind the curved portion only forward a mm or so usually. This lets it clear the plunge grind and the whole edge contacts the stone. You do need to be careful to not grind down the flat as it is what stops the blade from going to far when closed and contacting the backspacer and making you need to buy a new blade.
    Without the mod you can actually start to recurve your blade when using a sharpening system with 1" wide stones if you aren't careful. Just thought I would point it out as one of the peculiarities of the 940 that people may have trouble with.

      Yep, you're right! I removed the flare pretty quickly after I receiving it, and it makes for a much more enjoyable sharpening experience.

    Fascinating!
    Aside from the quality of the various stones one can use, and focusing just on the issue of angle of the bevel, does it not make more sense to use some kind of angle guide (Lanski, Gatco, or ….???) to ensure consistency?
    Please don’t misunderstand my inquiry……your skill speaks for itself. I am just trying to comprehend the process.

    I love my sharp knives also Kyle, but my sharpening kit contains a second cut sharp file and 1 oil stone with a fine side that I only use for a special finish, the rough side (which I still consider quite fine) sharpening knives, axes, machetes. The 1000 grit glass and cleaning stone are way out of my budget or need. Yes I have an old school set of 7 straight razors and an old school leather strap strop. Could you do a poor fella knife sharpening to show that you don't need all the fancyness to get the same razor-sharp edge on the fly.... sharp knife, save a life.... Nice vid Kyle 🍻☕

    Good looking Tuckamore and Bakeapples, Kyle! I still wish I could hand sharpen like I used to. Then, I watch you do it and realize I sucked at it even when I thought I was better. 🤣I know it is cheating, but I have come to enjoy my fixed angle system. I also appreciate that I can achieve a pretty consistently good edge on it, even though it is still not perfect.
    Anyway, it was good to see your dad in the shop with you. I hope all is well with the whole family up there. Take care.

    Hey Kyle seeing you using that nice shapton glass, you're motivating me to buy the shapton glass 30000 grit in order to complete my stone grit collection. So far I've collected most of the high grit shapton pro kuromaku series, 1000,5000,8000,12000 and the 15000. I really want to get the 30000 shapton glass since you say those are the best top end stones. I also bought the large kangaroo strop and the 0.025 large strip from jende and the accompanying dialing emulsion as well as the tormek strop solution.

      It sounds like you're very well set up, Neil! I want to clarify one point here: I haven't said the Shapton glass stones are the best, or the highest end stones. I simply think they are superb in quality. Very excellent. As for being the best, I'm sure there are even finer stones on the market.

      After 1 micron on steels high in vanadium, (3%-4% or more) use diamond's or CBN. Otherwise the shaptons at less than 1micron are great on many other steel types that are low in vanadium.
      You can get a great edge at 400 grit. Not every task is amazing with a mirror edge at 1micron or lower.

    I wish I had that optical tool. I judge an edge by the reflection now. I could actually focus down to ridiculous closeness before I had cataract surgery.

    Nice video again Kyle! I'm in the process of rescuing a few old axes and getting them in a usable condition but I'm having problem in getting the last bit of sharpness that I think should be possible. I can get them so they just barely shaves but is not succeeding in getting them better than that. If you want to show how to sharpen a few different kinds of axes I would be very grateful!

    You should try to make a butterfly knife, or balisong as it's also known as. I think it could be a very good video idea, and a good way to test your skills as a knife maker. I love your vids and the knifes you make.

    Ironic really Kyle that Old Man issues now preclude my life afield, now that I have your superior method of instruction, re. knife sharpening to guide me!
    As for other sharpening, I'd love to hear/see your strategy for keeping your blade maintained, while in the midst of properly caring for a downed, larger game animal such as a moose or caribou? We of course have plenty of deer and feral hogs, but they don't challenge us, sizewise, like your Canadian game. We aren't dealing with hundreds of pounds of meat and hide, and the amount of offal is certainly less of an issue as well! So, if next hunting season rolls around, and you need material, there's an idea for you!

    Hi love this channel . Do you have a sharpening kit or list from shapton maybe using the 2 stones or essentially basics that will service a sharpening beginner like me. I don’t have time to go back through all your videos no doubt you have covered this at some point. I looked in your shop. Do you have affiliate links with shapton or other companies. A one stop shopping list.
    I have stones and diamond plates but I have no idea what they are as they are not marked and mostly inherited over the years. I would like to relearn sharpening from the ground up .

    That blue stone seems to cut beautifully. Sadly, you can't buy here in the UK and shipping from Canada would be prohibitively expensive. But if I could, I'd buy one. What kind of microscope do you use?
    Yeah, a quick stropping after that 1000 grit stone and I'd be done.

    Hi Kyle,
    I'm new to your channel. Nice knives👍 can you please explain to me how you define scandi grind? My Scandinavian knives all have a grind that goes upp to the centerline of the side of the blade and the blade is ground all the way from tip to handle.

    I teach that for newcomers, one can find the angle with a business card. Fold the 90 corner, then fold it again. That will result in 22.5 degrees, which ain't bad.

    I stopped purchasing folding benchmades. They aren’t built as nice as they used to be. I love their new fixed blades thought. I’ve got a couple and they’re flawless. I prefer my ZT 0350 for my daily. It refuses to have any issues.
    Edit. After watching your sharpening of this knife the edge looked stunning under the microscope. A true craftsman.

      Thanks friend! Honestly, the 940 is the only benchmade I have any experience with, and I like it. It's fairly "no frills", but brutally tough. There are a few ZT models that I drool over, but not many. Most are too big and clunky for me. Not my style!

    You want to start by dragging the apex of the blade along the stone to remove the weak steal at the apex. If you just sharpen without doing that, you will still have a weak edge and the retention will be reduced at the deeper spots. Fatigue steel is often a problem but goes largely ignored due to not knowing this information.

    I’m not a big fan of stone sharpening I use a Work Sharp Precession And 3M lapping films to get a mirror finish. Finished with 60,000 grit white film.

      Maintain the angle and grind away the steel until the craters disappear. And like Kyle mentions, no need to do the whole blade if there's only small sections that are damaged

    Kyle- what is the difference in the leather on strops? I see different options and compounds. I love your videos and will be ordering a chef knife soon. Keep the good work up and help with the strops would be great, I’ve never used one, I normally just stop at 5000 and call it a day. Love the videos

Some people say there's no point in cleaning your stone as you go, because the prticles of steel form a sort of abrasive paste and it's actually beneficial for the process, and some say otherwise. And it's professionals, not some amateurs. I guess there's evidense supporting both sides...

    tip: if you use Wurth brake cleaner a lot, it may be worth getting a spray bottle rather than use compressed cans. It will work out cheaper and save the environment blah blah blah..........

      @@kyle_noseworthy yeah of course. Get a pump bottle and 5L (gallon?) of brake cleaner
      edit: I am in uk so 4.5l is a gallon.
      English and American gallon is different, I found that out after getting an aquarium.

    I am thinking about getting a microscope for inspecting my knife edge. What are you using here? This is not a biological microscope.
