Thank you for giving credit to the tribes in Africa who did this LONG before Sisterlocks were a thing. I am American and taught in Tanzania and Ethiopia. My locs were never an issue...until I came back to the U.S. I had lots of sisters with Sisterlocks trying to school me on why my locs were "wrong". Before people get ready to pounce, they need to make sure they are properly educated on the origins first. Six years later, I still love my hair ❤❤❤❤.
I appreciate your videos so much. I had a Sisterlocks “consultant” who was way past her glory days. I had to unravel the entire front half of my head, and find another consultant who installed microlocks. I couldn’t be happier with my microlocks. I wish I started out with them from the beginning.
Excellent video in presenting the facts. I micro loc'd 5 months ago and I am so happy with my 287 locs! They look great and full and I get many compliments. I live outside of the ATL and my loctician is the BEST! She cares about her craft and customers and takes great care with our natural hair. I know for me getting locs was part of a healing journey after the death of my little brother earlier this year. My loctician said that all of her loc clients has a personal and deep reasoning for their loc journey. That said, yes do the research because this is a big step and rewarding!
You said it ALL. You did it in a balanced way too - gave Dr Cornwell her props, but pointed out where there is room for improvement. She and her sisters are not unaware I think (simply because I've heard so many people complain about the areas you pointed out, it's hard to imagine nobody has brought it to their attention). So it's either all 3 of them are unapproachable, or all three of them are extremely stuck in their ways and impervious to progress. Whichever it is, I see it as an opportunity for another black person to leverage on their shortcomings. I don't think she invented the interlocking technique. I think she happened on it while in Africa (might have been Egypt, but I'm not 100% certain). I'm grateful to her for starting a movement though. Another black woman can take it from here if she won't. Either way, it's a win for black people everywhere.
Yeah sounds like the sisterlocks creator didn’t anticipate how much the internet would effect her business. The rise of UA-cam and DIYers is a big force to come up against. Yes there’s still people who feel like it’s worth it to pay to get this done by someone certified but there’s just tooo many people who have figured out how to take care of their sister/mircolocs without these expensive trainings and tools. I installed my own mircolocs back in 2018 and currently self maintain them. Also, some of this company sounds like it’s just being extra for no reason. I remember videos of women on YT explain that this bougieness was a turn off to them getting sisterlocks put in in the first place.
I follow a lot of loc content .. you might have heard of Yannie the only Locologist... In one of her (seminar) videos she said she grew up where interlocking was a normal part of life, way before the social medias and trends and stuff... So thin locks have always been a thing, even historically, and interlocking also always existed amongst Rasta communities
Yes Lawd! The SL website needs updating….BAD 😅! The videos are cheesy. The best way to get a good consultant is word of mouth. It’s best to do tons and tons of research and your video helps with that effort. In the state where I live braiding does not require a license as long as the Braider is not using chemicals or shampooing/conditioning the hair. Great job!
I wish I had a copy of an interview she did where she said that she took her class on a trip to Africa and they taught her how to do them there… now I can’t find it smfh
This was incredibly informative, thank you so much! And thank you for mentioning the website. I feel like stylists don't realize how much that affects people's (my) first impression of their business.
Yes this is a excellent video it presents both sides of argument for and against Sisterlocs. Only those who could afford and are committed to the maintaining their locs would do so. There's always been complaints but the brand definately needs updating. I myself wear microlocs and use the interlocking system. I would advise others to start learning how to do their own hair. Whether it's about locs or natural hair were all on a journey.
I use to think that Dr. Cornwell usedafrican techniques, specifically the Maasai until i.learned that their tribal technique was small braids infused with clay vs Dr. Cornwell whose technique is more similar to knitting.
I totally agree with what you said towards the end. They need to update. I still wondering where my money went to. I just want my package that I paid for. Love my locs tho!
I was part of the cult (why because I am in Houston and was extremely secretive about everything back in the days). I had my sister locs for over a decade. I think I got my sisterlocs in 2007 or 2008?. I got step sisterlocs and installation was $350. For repairs and to get my hair done by a certified sisterlock technician cost me $500. Through aging and pulling my hair up I decided to do the big chop again last year and I am unlocked. My sisterlocs we're gorgeous and I miss them sometimes. Get deep dive young lady!
That's a WHOLE other story, with quite a bit of drama and a number of court cases and gallons of tea 😅😂. You could spend the whole day researching it. It's interesting though. Goof luck.
So you mean to tell me that the money I sent to Cali to get my sister loc package: certificate, mug, shirt etc . IS FAKE?! A SCAM?! Cause I received my sister loc box from my consultant after getting my sister loc installed and sent in the card with money order to receive all these gifts they give you. What the….? I need to go higher up with this!
The Egyptians interlocked before any African Tribe. One thing for certain the end result of sisterlocs and microlocs are different. Sisterlocks tend to be more uniform, tight knitted, and danity with the look of loose natural. I guess this is due to the interlocked foundation v's the twist or braid startup.
That's establishing a professional business and gatekeeping your own created ingenuity. Every thriving entrepreneur, especially from non-Black communities protect their own interests( as they should)
She trademarked the tool that was used. It is completely selfish. She also took her consultants that when they do hair the person can’t be facing the mirror or they can’t see the tool they are using. She literally tried to gatekeep something she didn’t invent. Crazy and THAT is why her website and things aren’t updated because her business is suffering because you can’t gatekeep culture.
She probably needs some help from some younger people. She’s a baby boomer and probably had someone set up the website for her and learned how to do the bare minimum website maintenance. I don’t she’s intentionally ignoring complaints and issues with their social media/online presence, I think she has just neglected that side of the business because she doesn’t have the time or skill set to deal with it 😅 she needs to hire so young millennials/gen z social media consultant, digital marketing director and a PR team. You made a lot of good suggestions! If people could rate and review consultants that would change the game! The pol with a lot of complaints or scammers would be weeded out.
This video does come across as bashing. The creator admitted she was inspired by the styles she saw around her, which were based on existing styles. The tribal styles shown do not use the same technique, so she did not steal anything. What she created was original and her work should be acknowledged and respected. The courts refusing to protect Black creativity doesn’t invalidate that. Fortunately, we as consumers respect and appreciate her.
I wish I had a copy of an interview she did where she said that she took her class on a trip to Africa and they taught her how to do them there… now I can’t find it smfh

Thank you! So sorry that you experienced that! But it’s great that you found a better option ☺️
This was really well done. Thank you for producing this excellent content.
Thank you Bindi! ❤️

Sorry to hear of your loss. And thank you! Getting a great loctician is so important!

Yess I used to watch her videos years ago! That’s very interesting. I’ll have to check it out.
Where can I find that clip where she talks about interlocking being a way of life for her?

Great job on this video. Excellent research. I just started my sisterlocks journey. Thanks for sharing. Peace!
Very thorough! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 This should be the FIRST video everyone should watch before determining whether or not Sisterlocs is for them.
This was a great deep dive!
Thank you! 😊
The fifth rotation is the reverse 4. It’s the four point rotation in a counterclockwise direction.
Ahh interesting! Thanks for that
I wish I had a copy of an interview she did where she said that she took her class on a trip to Africa and they taught her how to do them there… now I can’t find it smfh

I had no idea about the tribes who inspired the Sisterlocks creator!
This was very insightful. I feel she was the first person to trademark the style .
Excellent informative video thank you we need more of these x
My locs are DIY and look just like sisterlocs I get complements on them all the time!
EXCELLENT QUEEN U SAVE $$$$ ENJOY YOUR SISTER LOCS 😊😊❤❤
Wow, Dr. Cornwell is a brilliant lady. Love what’s she does.

Great presentation, thank you for sharing!
Thank you!! Very informative!

I don’t think she used the exact same technique, but that it was inspired by the techniques of these cultures.
Enjoyed this. Very good research. Thanks.
Great job royal❤
I totally agree with what you said towards the end. They need to update. I still wondering where my money went to. I just want my package that I paid for. Love my locs tho!
I did receive my package. Happy chic here.
Thank you for thissss!!!!😊

Get deep dive young lady!
SL patterns are different from interlocking patterns
Yes I wanted to be a consultant but I gave up on that old website lol
Loll I don’t blame you
How did micro locks come about ?
That's a WHOLE other story, with quite a bit of drama and a number of court cases and gallons of tea 😅😂. You could spend the whole day researching it. It's interesting though. Goof luck.
I rocked micro braids for over 15 years I think sister locks may be might be coming because I go back into natural hairstyles

Egyptians are Africans Egypt is located in Africa
Nice video. Enjoyed watching.
Now a days who really cares for the certification 🤣🤣🤣
Rediculous rules..
Haha true
Trade mark. I think that is being selfish.

nice!!!
The sisterlocks products are terrible… so drying and gave me scalp problems.
You're so smart and beautiful ❤😊
THANK YOU
