- Making a RWD GTI using VW and Audi parts is something we always wondered if it could be done. In this video series, we find out if it is possible to make a VW GTI rear wheel drive, without major fabrication. All while keeping the VW engine that comes in a GTI.
This process would be very similar for an All wheel drive swap on any front wheel drive VW or Audi model.

What type of heat shield are you using on the bonnet?
Oh i wonder if a flipped small rear Tesla motor would fit in the back - seen a Tesla in the front of that model Golf... or maybe the i-pace motor as they are like a barrel with shafts at each end no diff hanging of the side like the Tesla design...

This rwd conversion is an ultimate question I've been having for sooooo many years. Finally someone got to actually do it. This video really made my day 😂.
I don't think that haldex cluch will hold up all that power, but it will be interasting to see.

I did LOADS of research on this about a year ago - I *was* gonna say it should all work but the haldex clutch isn't all that strong so there's a chance it'll burn up pretty quick but then I saw you welded it anyway in later videos, absolutely love it 😂

I'm doing a B9 A4 quattro spec conversion on my B8.5 A4 FWD CVT in Jan 2021. Basically I'm putting the DSG, quattro drivetrain & EA888 Gen 3 2.0t 252hp 2018 A4 parts in my 2013 A4 might even do a manual swap since I have a full donor B9 A4 car! I can't wait to see your process as it may indeed help me out with mine! More of the work & progress of my build is in my channel.

Great project idea, I’d say you’ll need to replace the trunk floor in the gti with r32 floor to make the rear diff fit.

I'd thought about doing this quite a bit when I had my GTI and my ultimate decision was to not do it because of the costs involved with needing to purchase multiple vehicles, messing with haldex, possibly needing a syvecs standalone etc. The difficulty of the engineering and fabrication aside, a mid engine RWD GTI would imo be a much cooler and possibly less of a headache on the electronics side but obviously quite a bit more fab work and plumbing.
This is a very cool project!! ShopDAP is awesome!
Side note: Please stock more routine maintenance products for 1.4T!

The thing I'm wondering about is how well that clutch pack in the Haldex is going to hold up to 2-4+ times the amount of torque it normally would need to.
I wonder if it'd be possible to make a solid coupler shaft that takes the place of the clutch and connects the propshaft directly to the pinion gear driving the differential. Or adapt a rear diff from a Subaru or other car.

I have done this on a first gen Leon 4x4 1.8t, the car will work and drive even on stock haldex controller without front shafts mounted.

Yep building a four-wheel-drive a 1992 Corrado G60. One year in and not done but sit on its wheel!!!! Spec Bmw rear beam Z3 widebody, Audi tt 6-speed box, Tiguan Haldex 4 gen diff and custom prop, Custom front driveshafts Last bit is the Haldex Controller Heaps of work Will be good to see your build good on ya
This is my dream! Wish they would make them like this from factory! Love my bigger turbo jetta... just not the front wheel drive. Ground is wet. I do nothing but burnouts at every light and every turn! A lot easier to control a rear slip then holding onto the wheel for your life!

I have a b4 passat vr6 I just got a cd009 for. The next step is figuring out the rear diff setup that won't explode when I put the boost to it. This is gonna help me out
Hi could this work with the golf r AWD drivetrain(why did you go with the golf r32, would any other car work?). And what car does the computer come off of.
Converted my fwd A3 to awd. Was a pain doing it on jackstands. I’m sure you guys are more knowledgeable than me but for anyone else doing the swap, if you have a spare r32 parts car, also swap the abs pump and esp sensor. The 02q can be converted to awd. Easiest way is to get an awd lsd and bolt it to the oem ring gear. You’ll need the proper seal 02q409189 and obviously the bevel box to connect the drive shaft to.
Did you have modify the brake lines in anyway? What coding did you have to do? Do you have Instagram? I’m looking to do the same to my GTI so I have some questions.
could you not relocate the front wheel drive assembly ie engine to rear in boot or in middle with gear box etc to make rear drive?

@Deutsche Auto Parts with that brake line on the R32 cradle. Does that just connect to the GTI brake line? Did you have to change the GTI ABS module to the R32 ABS module?
AWD > RWD, so why not make the GTI AWD instead?
Wonder if there is a way to eliminate the clutch in the haldex and get direct power to the diff.

Do you guys know if the mk1 TT running gear will fit into a 2009 GT TDI golf?
Would it not be possible to jump power directly through the fuel pump connector and run it to empty out the tank?

Especially in recent years they are not known to be the most reliable and also not well engineered.
My father was big in the tire business and had huge contracts with Audi, but regularly went to business meetings in a Honda Accord. The smurfs at Audi did not like.
That said, since Mighty Car Mods I do understand them GTI's are very popular in the English speaking world.
