- Part 2 is HERE! Oil Soaked Rack and Pinion Bushings! Torn and Mushy! 1998 Ford Mustang Gt 4.6 • Long Term Oil Change D...
This 1998 Mustang needed a suspension check after years of sitting. It has low miles for its age but needs a rebuild in a few ares. We need to check the ball joins, sie rods, rack and pinion, as well as the shocks and struts. The customer states that the steering is binding, a little disassembly will help to diagnose the issue by isolating components.

I would never end your videos prematurely just because the sound is broken. I found the voiceover to be a good solution.
I 100% agree.
And NO LOUD NOISES 😂
I agree...if he had the telstrater thing like they do in football games he could draw on the screen and add that lol
Besides, we could all use some R&R! That's Ray Ross my man!
Voice over didn't bother me at all.
Actually the VO worked really well, Ray, kudos to you for not tossing the video. Ray, understood with your frustration but seriously, the VO was really good and it worked. The KEY to doing anything right is adapting and overcoming problems which you do VERY well.
Don’t underestimate our devotion to admiring your work. You da’ man, Ray!
Voiceover beats the heck out of videos that have no words at all.
Well Ray.. Hearing you giving yourself some words about what you were doing in such situations was pretty fun in itself.
WERE WERE WERE WERE
@bennyrussell5551 Fixed it. 🙄
No problems with the voice over. Don't beat yourself up, we'll watch you do your thing no matter what.
Ya, don't beat you self up, that's what we come here every day to do. [insert sarcasm here]
@@clbcl5 Well, now we know where all the reeee's come from.
The voice over was actually an added bonus. Listening to Ray watch himself work and heckle himself reaches a whole new level of comedy. "No wonder I have trolls" "Give up, Ray"
You're not just some guy. You are a mechanic with over 500,000 subscribers on youtube and your own auto repair shop. Don't you ever forget it.
Yeah ❤ from the UK 🇬🇧
~~~DITTO~~~
Amen!
Plus the millions of dollars he is worth. Nice to see a guy making money and keeping his integrity in tact.
Yep, it wasn't that long ago we all watched Ray load up his tools into his trailer, drove home telling us this wasn't the end, just a new beginning, and here he is, Ray Unit & Wife Unit running their own shop! I was glad he packed up from that place that didn't have much integrity (shady bunch), and not putting customers first.
I’m 71 now and I love your work.Brings back fond memories laying on my back in the drive way busting my knuckles and cursing like a sailor 😂.I admire you patience sir
I can only agree, being just as old, but spent my time on motorbikes in those days!
That feeling when a puller is under tension and your bung hole is eating your underwear. Ray I enjoyed the voiceover and you making comments about yourself. Great video. 👍
No worries about the sound. Nice watching anyway
My buddy just retired from his auto shop he ran for over 40 years. Fully heated and air conditioned 4 bay garage with 2 lifts and enough tools to rebuild an aircraft carrier. He is passing on his business to a nice young man that came to work for him a few years ago, proved himself and is now purchasing the business.
The Bob Ross of mechanics is _entirely accurate._ The super calm way Ray explains everything, even the stupid frustrating stuff. He's the person I try to be when I teach my son about twisting bolts.
Hell Ray, we listen to you ramble with or without the voiceover. Your videos are always great. thanks for the great content. Everything is a friendly little cloud. Thanks man.
I was a mechanic for years. Retired now. Amazed by the new tools that I never had access to. I like your videos. Rock on Ray!
Hi there Ray I did for a car dealer ship the work shop boy did do that trying to lift a auto in the car and the two off the lift arms
Both move from the car and fell off the lift the car hit the ground in the workshop no one got hurt but car was a right off mate I in joy
Our show mate a fan from down under mate be safe
Hydro boost? Yucky. Surprised it still works.
I'm no mechanic, but do all my own cars. I often make new speciality tools from scraps and other tools to solve problems, just to find them very cheap in my local tool store later.. :p
I actually rather enjoyed the humor during the voiceover. It's not often that an artist can troll their own work.🤣
Much love and blessings to all ❤️
Stay safe everyone 🤘😎
I stayed 'til the end. You did a great job with your voice-over! If it weren't for the lack of wrench sounds I would not have known the camera sound was off.
Rarely do I watch 45 minutes of auto repairs but yours was a fun time... Thanks.
I like the voiceover type video... it lets your sense of humor REALLY shine! Keep putting out these amazingly informative and entertaining videos, and people will watch.
Good morning Ray, regardless of the voice over you make quality content, the time you take to evaluate each vehicle, if I lived close you would definitely be my home shop. Thank you for the videos
I'm sure all the die hard fans, like me are still here no matter what kind of audio
it's such a pleasure to see someone that has their car taken care of like this!
Wow! Ever heard of a torch? I enjoy watching you cross thread and make your job mutch more difficult then it actually is. LOL
No worries about the sound. You always entertain. Thanks Ray
Just in case you don't know, you are legendary to most of us,Ray.
Shit happens to all of us from time to time. I'm glad that you did a voice over and posted the video anyways. Huge thank you bud!
Such a pleasant sight seeing a professional wrestle with a friggen ball joint. They are the bane of my existence. I’m a shade tree mechanic so I’ve only done a dozen or so, but I think only one time did it go smoothly! Thanks for letting me know that seasoned pros can struggle with them too :)
This type of production problems is what makes you genuine. You take the time in your extremely busy life to produce these videos.
Lol - he does it to MAKE MONEY, not for your satisfaction!! You aren't the sharpest pencil in the drawer - are ya?!?
Say congratulations to the owner of that Mustang for giving it so much TLC, yes some rusty bits and pieces but they obviously do love the car from the engine bay appearance and the body. Looking forward to the next installment of this one Ray. Also lovely to see your crew getting into the painting of the shop it is looking awesome mate TY.
Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘💖💖
Although the sound stopped, at least you gave us a great voiceover, and I would never stop watching one of your videos because they are always great with fantastic commentary.
I honestly like the voice over Ray. You are in a different emotional state and have the benefit of hindsight so the commentary helps us know what was going through your mind, and your wit is a great tool here, you can evaluate your own work and make it entertaining, what mistakes were made etc and most importantly how you could have done it better. That is like a bonus video especially for the DIY audience. I would do one of these each week or every other week. It works.
I completely agree!
Maybe one or two videos a month, of course at your discretion Ray, but going over a video or two, talking about the repair, installation or whatever you decide and how it could have been done differently in order to facilitate the speed, cost or longevity of what was done to the vehicle. Also, updates as far as how a certain part was modified, (due to no replacement part available), or the modification done for performance gains, etc., etc.!
No matter what Ray, we'll continue to watch your videos brother, your wit, humor and knowledge is truly why we always come back for more..... You've simply become a part of everyone's family!
Well said completely agree
The voiceover is actually quite soothing. Listening through headphones I often have to adjust the volume while watching. Great content as always.
Amazing to see that an old Mustang can be in such good shape!
I love watching your videos. You and AdeptApe are my favorites. Currently doing an inframe mini rebuild of a Cummins 8.3 diesel on a rear engine skoolie(school bus converted to an RV). I know what you're doing is completely different than my project, but I learn problem solving and to keep a positive attitude by watching your videos. 💙
Only thing missing from this vid is the completion of the steering fix, and a road test afterword to see the result of the fix in action, would love a mini part 2 if possible!
The Bob Ross of mechanic videos! 100%. "I didn't use the wrong socket,just a happy little accident, I'll use that one later." That's awesome. You are becoming a legend dude.
Happy litte WD40 clouds.
Technical stuff always happens, even watching I learn something, thanks and I appreciate it
Thanks for still posting this one Ray. Keep it up!
Ray, you are becoming legendary, we always love your dialogue and this voice-over is still informative keep up the great work and real great to see all that you have done with the once rundown shop.
your voiceover is just as good as your regular voice. Rambling and all. :)
thankyou Ray,and theres no need for apologies at all,all the work you do bringing us these daily uploads are very gratefully recieved,theres so much involved,your voice over was very well done,,see you in the next one,,👍👍
never leave you!!! shit happens it's all about your videos not just one thing! and thanks for being real.. from your family to you caring to repairs and to the channel in that order. we aint leaving!
We are still here. The sound is no problem. You gotta do what you gotta do. I’m just glad you w etc ahead with the video.
She's a beauty 👀 Total respect to the owner for keeping it in that condition
don't talk about wife unit that way!
Right up until the rims were caught on film...
and the suspension!
😂Well she's also a beauty 😉@@m1stertim
There are certain things that are out of the hands of the owner if they are not diy people@@markadams5429
I never quit watching because of the audio issue, your voice over was just fine!! 👏🏻💯
I love your voice overs. it feels so real which is the best!
If every mechanic videoed diagnosis, customers would be able to trust them. Good job man.
This was actually a nice change of pace...with the added comic relief, it kind of reminded me of the Red/Green show.
There was no reason to click away. The voice over was entertaining.
Bro, you don't realize how therapeutic you can be, I dig your videos.
For the record, I quite enjoyed storytime with Ray.
Ray trolling himself....amazing.
Haven't clicked away - a picture is still worth a 1000 words!
I learned years ago, that if you give up at the first sign of adversity, you will never achieve anything in life. Life is a test and with this video, you have passed the test.
Don't be so hard on yourself Ray.
You are a hell of a mechanic and I love your dedication to make so much videos and work so much at the same time😊
Technical issues happen man. Dont sweat it. Thanks for not abandoning the video.
Thank you for posting Rainman. The play-by-play was actually nice - no worries about the audio pooping out.
Great to see the care you put into your work.
I did say that you were The Bob Ross of Auto Repair and still stand by it Keep up the good work and always be humble.
When Ray talked about it in this video I did not get it at first, but now that I see your comment, it sort of clears up a bit for me. I guess it has something to do with a job not looking like it is going to turn out OK at first, but as it goes on you start to see that it does make a lot of sense. I hope that is close to what you mean.
I don’t watch your videos to hear your tools Ray, I watch em so I can learn, and also to support your channel. Anyone I’ve met in the last two years, I’ve recommended your channel to them. I’ve learned a lot just by watching your videos, and I’m very thankful for you man
Great video Ray! Always informative, whether audio or voice over! Would be a good teaching videos for trade schools. Help them to think outside the box and be efficient! Can’t wait for the next one! 👍👍👍
Thank you for not abandoning it I enjoyed watching your video
i liked the voice over! Its like a directors cut with extra context
Ray you are legendary and I think it makes sense to call you the Bob Ross of auto mechanics.
Bob Ross died miserable broke and lonely
BLASTPHAMY. Bob Ross was an angel sent from heaven that gave us all the capability of seeing what true love is like.
We just need more happy trees.
I can't help but learn new tricks for my shop, thank you Ray, God Bless You and your family and keep you all safe!!
I am amazed at how you can do everything with your left hand. and record with your right hand, I’ve learned so much by watching your videos. You are professional and it shows, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. (Leon) From Georgia
"What do we have here?"
A backing plate you bent up, for starters. 🤫
Ray, never doubt that you are legendary. I promise I will bring my toyota in for service from Atlanta when needed
After taking a few hours to replace both lower control arms on my escape with no power or special tools, it makes me feel a little better seeing a professional struggle like me. So many of the videos online make it look easy. I'm convinced they remove the part off camera, replace it, then record its removal a second time to make it look simple.
I have a feeling somebody drove that Stang more than once in Daytona Beach? Or maybe it spent a couple of winters in Detroit?
I believe even on the good videos on UA-cam there's a lot of editing. They say he, here's the bolt, take it off, you can see for 5-10 seconds they are struggling, then all of a sudden it's off. Really? I understand they can't put that in for time sake, but at least say so. Doing an alternator on my V6 Camry, it was a nightmare reaching the lower bilts, yet, they zipped them off on the video 😂.yeah, editing.
love to see the customer authorize a full rebuild of the suspension.
I like how you talk about the situation you find yourself in. Most people just think to themselves about it. Cool!
Ray, even with voiceovers, your videos are worth watching. They so us splinter gatherers the struggles that can take place while trying to make repairs.
I think you are the bob ross of auto repair. and I enjoyed this video.
Your Commentary to you watching your own work is Hilarous I Love It
You fill the Bob Ross shaped hole in our hearts with your smooth wrenching and soothing commentary.
hey Bud, the loss of sound is no big deal, your voice over was fine, cheers
Ray I don't care if you loose sound, you can always fix it, like the way you did it. I will always watch your videos to the end! You are meticulous at your job, and I enjoy watching you work! I noticed that more of the walls and trim painted as you worked, your shop is looking good!
I know its frustrating when working on the cars that it doesn't go as planned ie ball joints refusing to follow directions.. lol 😆 and then sound stage goes silent 🤫
BUT, you seem to always have a work around, which is very enlightening, amazing and enjoyable to watch! Like I said, don't ever give into disappointments because they could bring you answers, that you never would have thought about. 🤔😃
Love watching, keep up the good work!
God Bless!
Whether you 'loose' sound or tighten it, the content is always great. Fret not!
@@JimsPub-ds3qs Words....lol 😆
as Ray would say!
Rainman you are such a good, honest person. I wish I could have sent my '70 Montego 351 "C" up to you to get the fuel system and new gas tank done, also the electrical short. I'm so glad you and your Family are doin well. Been a follower(subscriber) for 2 1/2 years. Great informative videos. "Love your humor" Be Blessed.
Glad you posted. It happens to people all the time and voice-over is completely fine. Definitely never dump a cool video for some lost audio. Keep up the good work.
Good day to you, Ray.
I don't mind the voice-over. It's better than no video at all. And yes, you are the 'Bob Ross' of mechanic videos! Love watching your antics in the shop and your personality and crazy ways are what keep us coming back for more!
Keep up the great work, Ray! Catch you on the next one! 👍👍👍
Love when your vids go straight to the ‘poppin’n-z-hood’ intro. Something about that logo and song puts me in an great mood! Keep up the great work!
Maybe that should be the logo for a tee shirt ...
@@kendowton8661 yes!
I enjoyed your voice over. You criticizing your own work was a fun twist. Nice to get to see you solving issues as they happen. Keep the cameras rolling, your imperfections are what makes this real.
Great save Ray, as always, awesome content.
Wow! Those wheels show a lot of curb rash damage!
Anti-seize, I use it on almost every bolt.
And no, I don't care that it changes my torque settings. Never had a problem with that being an issue.
I don't like rust and I don't like bolts that break off!!!
Looks like finish is being affected by environmental conditions. Doesn’t look like curb rash.
Looks more like the clear coat is peeling
Could be.@@goosedeathable
That too.@@motorcoachtech7615
I am in Maine, and I use anti-seize/never-seize on everything except for lug studs because I don't want a wheel falling off on the interstate at 80mph.
Thanks for taking the time to bring us along on these repairs. It’s hard enough turning a wrench let alone recording. Love your patience and humor. Refreshing
No sound - no problem !
Your videos are always great.
Don't stress ray your videos are always cool.
Absolutely love Story Time with Ray. More please! Don’t feel bad about it, make lemonade 🤜🤛
Your voiceover is on point and very informative. Don’t delete shit. You’re doing awesome and I just wish you had your shop near me. Honest mechanic, hard as hell to find.
Deeply satisfying! Thank you!
I watched all the way to the end. Just wished you lived near me ! Thank you for sharing your talent !
Sweet Stang that's worth the love, nice to see people take time and care to replace parts before they completely wear out or fall off. The owner is probably one in a thousand
I also fix stuff before it falls off or breaks. Because I let my 2 oldest (19 & 17) daughter's drive my cars. I do not want them to fail while one of them are driving.
Of course it has hydro boost! Could you imagine packaging a vacuum booster in there?
I needed to see this video. I own a 2004 Mustang GT and I need to replace the rear shocks. Now I know exactly what I need to do!
I'm actually enjoying the voiceover Ray, it's a cool change of pace. What's truly most important though, is the information we learn about the work being done, I've never worked on this generation of Mustang, so your mention of bolt head size vs nut size is very helpful, also the fact that the axle is relying on the shock absorber to hold it in place, and many other useful tidbits of information we gain, as you go along throughout the video!
I'll be sixty four years old tomorrow, and have been working on cars and dirt bikes since I was ten, so even after fifty four years of wrenching, I still listen intently to what you have to say as you go along.... I'm always in the learning mode!!!👍
It's ok ray ..nothing wrong with storytime with Raymond. things happen the sound bit don't stress over it bro I know it bothers you but honestly I enjoyed the voice over most would have not even posted..that's why your the best in my book STWR!! 💯👍💯
I love that the pickle fork is always your last option. Such a PITA tool !!!!
Wow, that is a lot of rust. I'm in Southern California and we don't see that much rust. Amazing workmanship. I'm enjoying your awesome videos.
Ray,you don't need to apologize normal people know things happen with equipment. Keep it up bro.👍
Hey Ray, here’s a suggestion, use the puller to only apply pressure but whack it with a hammer while under pressure. You can save your pullers life by only applying slight pressure and let your hammer do the main work. Most of the time, any mechanical bind can be solved by applying kinetic energy such as a hammer or your impact punch.
A little squirt of blaster or other lube goes a long way. Good vid if I ever need to do my 96 MYSTIC Cobra.
My VW caravelle T4 was making a creaking sound from the front suspension .. I injected some moly grease into the top and lower ball joints and the result was amazing .. nice free steering with no creaking and a silky smooth ride . adapting my grease gun to take a injection syringe was a super lubrication fix .
i like the narration you gave and watched the entire video.
105 here in Texas Ray, feel your pain.
It's gonna get worse, just sayin..
It’s a Dry heat though
