I remember that Musashi became a Zen Buddhist monk later in life. Some historians speculate that Musashi participated in the Battle of Osaka. One of the bloodiest battles in Japanese history. I belive that battle is what changed Musashi's life to follow a more peaceful lifestyle. He saw to much bloodshed.

@@TaoistSwordsman have you read his books? they constantly talk about "the way" to such a point that a very central point in the book relates the different ways a person can live to the way of the warrior...that's literally taoism.
furthermore although there's no true version of Shinto, and can be practiced alongside other "religions", most versions of Shinto feature the Dao in some capacity.
taoism is also probably older than Japan's founding as a nation, which reportedly was done by a fleet of ships that abandoned the Chinese empire; an enormous amount of Chinese culture and technology was brought to Japan then, almost certainly Taoism has existed in Japan since the first days of the founding of a nation.

So perhaps the sharing of the IP is among thoses party's and if it's not renewed we could see samurai champloo going into the public domain, wich mean ANYBODY could make story about samurai champloo and re-using the characters and turning a profit from it without a single thing the holders of the IP can say as long as they do not enforce their claim of the IP for a while.

As well all know for those who know the biographies, that Musashi in his later years gave up fighting and settled down in seclusion to live a life of peace.

  • @fenggula7890

He is Miyamoto Musashi. Hear me out. We all know that Samurai Champloo takes liberties to distort historical accuracies to fit in its eccentric universe. Example: Fuu influencing the young painter to hop on the Dutch ships and his work indirectly inspiring Van Gogh. The introduction of baseball to Japan starting with the main characters' game with the outsiders. And many other episodes/easter eggs. The anime's beauty relies on the fact that it does NOT take its timeline seriously; it thrives off the concept of nostalgia to evoke some of the best storytelling effects for the viewers even if it toys with the timeline of (IRL) history. So, back to the subject. "Johnny"? Come on, the most cliche name possible. Not even Japanese in a Feudal homogeneous Japanese society. When Jin asked for his name, he answered truthfully and in a different tone.. like an unpleasant tone deriving from unwanted memories of an old life. Musashi realized later in life that he was not into killing; he became a pacifist after fighting some of the deadliest wars. In the comments, people have also reported on his odd and unorthodox personality; I can't verify the accuracy of that, but if they're all saying it, it must be from a source. IF Johnny isn't Musashi, he was definitely based off of him as an easter egg. Regardless though, I think that it is him. Musashi is already a revered legend in our books. Who else wins 60 duels against the toughest people and not lose once? History looks at Musashi as one impossibly extraordinary character. If Samurai Champloo intends to keep an accurate timeline and infer that Musashi somehow, someway lived over 200 years in a story where we got samurais doing impossible feats like Kariya, a breakdancing samurai, main characters altering the course of history etc... then, I find it 100% believable.

Miyamoto Musashi (宮本 武蔵?, c. 1584 - June 13, 1645), also known as Shinmen Takezō, Miyamoto Bennosuke or, by his Buddhist name, Niten Dōraku, was an expert Japanese swordsman and rōnin.
Musashi, as he was often simply known, became renowned through stories of his excellent and unique double-bladed swordsmanship and undefeated record in his 60 duels (next is 33 by Itō Ittōsai).
He was the founder of the Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū or Niten-ryū style of swordsmanship and in his final years authored The Book of Five Rings (五輪の書 Go Rin no Sho?), a book on strategy, tactics, and philosophy that is still studied today.

Maybe he's comfortable with his rough-spun clothing. After all, that getup turned him into the most fearsome samurai in Japan.

It's important to remember that this show doesn't give a shit about even attempting historical accuracy. Some things to keep in mind:
    Musashi died in 1645.
The Sunflower Samurai took part in the Shimabara Rebellion which took place between 1637 and 1638.
In episode 23, Baseball Blues, the trio plays a game of baseball against a bunch of Americans. America wasn't a thing until 1776, and while it's hard to pin down the exact year modern baseball was invented, it's generally believed to have come about some time in the mid 1800s.

The baseball episode most likely didn't happen though. Jin supposedly dies in it and it happens a full 200 years after the Shimabara rebellion. It's just like the meteor episode, a parody episode that is something of a filler episode but still ties to the larger narrative of the story, which is the way Japan modernised and changed.

I always loved this scene and I feel it’s very indicative of the Japanese story telling style. One main difference I’ve noticed between eastern and western story telling, ie ghibli vs Disney is that the west loves conclusivity, a happy ending, explicit details-they leave nothing to the imagination. Whereas eastern story telling tends to have this prevailing element of ambiguity, every question doesn’t necessarily have an answer, the ending isn’t necessarily happy. It’s almost as if they’re leaving the quilt barely unknit and leave it up to the viewer to close it up. I like to look at it as circular vs linear storytelling, East and west respectively. Was this Musashi? Maybe, maybe not. And I think that’s exactly the amount of assurance they wanted to give the audience. It’s very telling of the modest nature of etiquette in Japan as well.
