Scrimped and saved for years for my 41 purchased in 2022. It's mesmerising to play. I absolutely love that guitar and have to force myself to practice on my old plywood DCX so it's still worth something when my girls get it in 40 years or so.
I played one in a store yesterday. I can’t stop thinking about how I felt from the first chord. I can’t imagine how any other guitar could possibly sound, look or feel better. It is a phenomenon, quite extraordinary.
I’ve owned the d28 reimagined. Is an absolutely beautiful guitar. Does what exactly it says on the tin. I tried a d42. Well, that first chord was enough to hear the difference. Wow!! What a sound. Full rich crisp loud. I can go on. Don’t be fooled by it’s just a bling thing. The materials are far better grade the soundboard is so tight grained the workmanship is outstanding. D28 is a beautiful guitar but not a patch on my new d42
This one definitely has the classic Martin spruce/rosewood dread sound. If that's your scene and you like the looks, this is it. Or the J200 equivalent of saying, "every guitar player's got to own one", you'll never be quite satisfied if you don't! I always believed it was Neil Young above all others who really showcased the D 40's series to the world's discerning ears, and this 42 comes near that sound.
Hit the nail on the head here. I just bought one because I’ve been chasing Neil’s tone. Put 80/20 bronze mediums on and it’s 100% his sound. He has a D-45 but his luthier scalloped the braces, brining it closer to a post-2018 D-42 or D-45. The D-41s I’ve tried weren’t quite there.
Before they were reimagined. The 42 was Braced differently then the 41 and 45, also had aged toner. I think that made the 42 the best if the 3. Now they're Braced the same and gave aged toner, so it's just about how much Bling you want. My 2005 D42 is an amazing instrument
Would love to see you compare the Martin D42 against the Santa Cruz B/PW. Why you might ask, well… I’m torn between the two which to buy and could do with some expert advice!
It's not the price. Just the fact it's sandwiched between two great models. A lot of people who have the coin for the 42 will likely have the desire to go all out for the 45.
I live in Connecticut! I love your channel and would love to do exactly what you guys do!! This is the Ideal Job!!! I'd even bring along my D28 Custom....🎵🎶🎵
I sold a 2011 d28 a few days ago I've had it for about 10 of those years... Used to write and record... As I wrote most of my released songs on it I will miss it and might regret it but its always been too big for me I prefer 000s now just me... I do think there the best sounding guitar shape in the world though the dreadnought... I sold because I'm poor... My best guitar now is a 000rsgt but one day I might get a 00018... Anyway hope I didn't make a catastrophic mistake letting my baby go
It sounds as if you already do regret it. Think of it as a father giving his daughter away in marriage. She has a whole new life. We don't really own a guitar. We take custody and enjoy for a while and hopefully the guitar lives well longer than we do and others get the opportunity to take custody and enjoy
@@johnwashburn3793 yes and I guess with a guitar like that it should live longer than me so it was leaving sometime anyway... Actually the guy that bought it had just lost a leg (true story) so I'm sure this had something to do with getting back on deck and moving forward with life... Might just have meant to be.. Anyway thanks happy new year :)
@Joe_Montfort I once pulled down a D45 off a higher shelf and played it, I was awestruck, but it was $8000 and I was short the $8000 at the time, about 15 Years ago lol
I had a Martin D-42 Centennial, and was very disappointed in that it was no better than my D-28 but charging almost $2000 extra for mediocre abalone trim with white plastic binding. I sold it!
The tension between Quinton and Paul makes me wonder if there’s actually much respect between ‘em. Paul speaks words of praise, but I don’t get the feeling there’s any real love there.
Maybe you're new to this channel, but no, you're wrong. These guys make a great team, one of the best on the net, plus no awkward egos. Paul's a drummer/percussionist, Q's a guitar player, they respect each other mutually. Sorry for stepping in guys, couldn't pass on this one!🙂
@@maxwellfan55 Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I have only been watching these two for a couple of years. I’ve withheld comment as the drama (and the high end guitars) kept bringing me back. @@Wificationish I'm afraid it's going to take more than pennies. These are not boutique instruments they are production line machine produced. they are priced like they are a small hand built artisan builder creating a few tens or hundreds a year. Martin put out a lot over ten thousand instruments a year.
@@nickfletcher4132 I definitely 100 percent agree there. You can get some seriously nice handmade guitars in a 1 man shop for less. High end Martins are definitely not worth it new, I was just joking when I said that lol.
I love how Quinton is clearly enjoying the D-42 at the beginning and Paul asks, "should we talk about it?" lol

One of the best sounding dreds I've ever heard. Magnificent tone, resonance and volume. A masterpiece.
i got a d 42 its 2013 dab bloom in fairfield tn set it up ive never heard anything like it sounds amplified
u have not heard mine
the best lutheran in the country set mine up dan bloom in fairview tn
does most of gruhn guitars in nashville and vince gill he is the best
What a great voice these Martin’s have!!
Have a 2005 d42 and a 1973 d28, they both are great guitars, different sound. The top on the d42 is higher quality than the d28, love them both
I've owned two D-41's and two D-45's including a D-45v Brazilian. Awesome Guitars. But the D-42...something about it. Awesome.
I played one in a store yesterday. I can’t stop thinking about how I felt from the first chord. I can’t imagine how any other guitar could possibly sound, look or feel better. It is a phenomenon, quite extraordinary.
This and the Guild D55 are the best guitars I have ever played.
I will attest to its awesomeness
Best guitar I have ever tried🤩
That's really fortunate. It's the best guitar I've ever eyed🥹

Gotta love that classic d42 sound. Glad I own one. Just can't play the damm thing. Dean 🇬🇧 🙏 ❤️
you rock!! stop kidding
Lol. I can relate. I have a 1975D 45 and I can play a bunch of chords but that’s about it. But I can sing damn near anything.
look at his arms and hands, he is like the Arnold of the guitar world
steroids...adi arms

Neil’s guitar is a D45.
I love ❤️ my newly bought OM28 I sing y it’s singing back but iam humbled too…my last or the hummingbird
Beautiful!! Inlays, binding, and headstock logo's can get really expensive 🙂
Also, top tier wood is very expensive.

Nothing like a dread😎
Not sure but I thought the top wood had a different (higher) grade, or is that Custom Shop area?

Nice playing, what chord was played at 6:21 ?
Amin7 but he’s adding a G on the 3rd fret of the high e string.
E string - X
A string - 0
D string - 2
G string - 0
B string - 1
e string - 3
this VS Yamaha LL56 which one is better in overall playabilty and soundwise?
Aside from the great review and insights, I need to ask if Quinton curls V-8 engines to get those massive forearms. He would scare Popeye.
I don’t really like the bling around the body. I do like it on a 00042 though lol
Those things play themselves I think

I will say that at the beginning strumming, Quinton makes this best sing like a 12 string!
Damn you guys! This wasn't even 7 minutes long.

Not super impressed with the sound, feel like for $6400 you can get a lot more from Collings or Boucher or something along those lines
Same as a D-45 minus $3000 and some bling.
It does sound different. My father had a 45 and I had a 42. Personally, I preferred the 42 but the 45 definitely had more warmth and bass.
If u need bass play with a drummer and bassist

A

G
D41/42/45 martin will compete with any acoustic made on the earth. If you don't believe it play one.
best in the world.
$6400
nope u get these all day for much less
Its all bling. Other guitars sound just as good without the bling .
