A truly classic film where everything appears routine on the surface. Evil is never really visible, but it's always lurking in the shadows. I saw this movie at its release when I was a preteen, and it still gives me the shivers.
50 years ago... A masterpiece!!!! My favorite film!
You know that the facts are based on the true. Polanski killed his own wife......it will come out in 2020..........with all the other facts what happened decennia long...........so think twice......it is bizar and nobody believed it.

My favorite film ever too.
Saw this in 1968, at my NYC local movie theatre, right after it opened. Lines around the block!
One of the great films of all-time. It is actually a combination of dark satire, horror & ocult which puts it in it's own genre. The acting is superb & the story line is simply riveting.
... and the mastermind of Polanski ...
A classic New York movie. Such wonderful direction and perfect use of characters.
It all rested on Mia's shoulders. She carried it under extraordinary circumstances-- Sinatra served her divorce papers on set. A brilliant movie.
I could watch Ruth Gordon over and over, such a unique, talented actress.
yeah, especially when she's eating that piece of cake -- sooo creepy -- she just shoves it into her mouth like some animal.
She was great in My Bodyguard.
The evil hidden in the mundane. A very realist approach to psychological terror and most certainly the beginning of modern horror movies.
This movie actually made me cry in grief and misery.
Movies like this are why I love film as an art form!

The end, with the Japanese suit, taking pictures. Like Rosemary's a celebrity. Brilliant touch.
Ruth Gordon -- OMG! Without her, the film would be less enjoyable, less creepy, less evil. Great casting.
Polanski's now 87 years old. Say what you will about his personal tragedies and screw-ups, but the guy sure could direct actors.
Its still in my top 10 psychological horror films.
I remember seeing this movie when I was 14, I loved it.

I laugh uncontrollably at Minnie taking her first sip of her Vodka Blush cocktail and going into a coughing fit before she can gasp out “Carpet!” Roman is letting the drink tray drip onto the floor, and she has to immediately kneel down to frantically wipe up the spill with her apron while criticizing her sloppy husband.
In one of the documentaries, Mia Farrow tells the story of an actor - playing the Devil - with cat’s eye contact lenses and reptilian suit, humping away on her. When the various takes were done, he shook her hand and said, “It’s been a pleasure working with you, Miss Farrow.” Farrow herself thought that was very funny, if a bit disconcerting!

You heard of Stockholm Syndrome? Most of us do the same. Because our instinct is to survive, so we rationalize all the absurd problems and situations thrown at us in order to survive.

Anyone who loves the film is encouraged to seek out videos here discussing it. In one, Mia Farrow revealed that the yellow and white dress she wore was her own! Many other fun tidbits to learn about. The famous Dakota certainly another one. :)
This film's true horror was that Rosemary WAS telling the truth about her odd neighbours, yet no one wanted to believe her! This is when we see someone mentally healthy, become paranoid to the point of almost being psychotic and the psychosis was warranted, real, and not figment of her imagination.
Yeah, I didn't like this review either, he missed the whole point of the movie but pointed out the most irrelevant things about it.

Rosemary deserved everything she got, for what she did to that apartment. And I bet I know exactly which one she ruined (well... the one used as her unit, for filming). The shutters are STILL painted white - even on the streetside. Great little video! The imagery is super sharp! I don't think I've ever noticed how clearly we can see the interior of the Dakota. This must be from a remastered version. The woodwork was in SO much better shape, half-a-century ago, when this was filmed, than it is today (refinished to less-than-museum-level standards, in most instances).
Are you sure about that? Because the radiator grille below the window is EXACTLY what's standard in the Dakota - EXACTLY. And the woodwork in Roman & Minnie's apartment is EXACTLY what I've seen in the Dakota (just with a less sleazy/polyurethaned finish than I've seen, since in the intervening decades, the varnish has mostly been replaced).
Rosemary's Baby is primarily a thriller.

The scariest part? Aunt Bee’s best friend, Clara, was a satan worshiper! Lordy! And she also made the best pickles.

Which was a fantastic choice, because one's mind will make the baby a lot scarier than anything they could have put on screen.
Rosemary sees it.
After she screams "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ITS EYES?!!" you kinda have to use your imagination.

Polanski was like a 'kid in a candy store' casting this film. Not just the old (and at that time somewhat neglected) legendary old film stars such as Sidney Blackmer, Ralph Bellamy, but the old tried and true character actors he loved such as Patsy Kelly, Hope Summers, the legendary Elisha Cook Jr. of film noir fame is perfect here. Hope Summers and Patsy Kelly as WITCHES is sheer genius!

You know, what gets me about movies like this one and The Exorcist, is they make out like Satan has so much power, when in reality, the power is Satan is very minimal compared to the power of the ALMIGHTY GOD.....just sayin'......

For a more visceral, loopier NY horrorshow, check out the Sentinel. Probably copied RB, but so what? Loaded with familiar faces, weird sex, and actual deformities.

Like the Wizard of Oz, the movie is just Rosemary's bad dream, but it's a great ride.

When you walk into the party, stick out your arm and shout: "HAIL SATAN!"
This film worked because the novel was so compelling and read like a movie. Most of the actor were very good with the major exception of Mia Farrow. Her winey voice and inability to act was bad enough. However, she gets a haircut mid-film where she looks terrible. "It's Vidal Sasson" she screams. And even though it's written to draw you in every time she has a dramatic line it seems comical, "This isn't a dream. This is real".
