CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rosemary (Mia Farrow) is certain her neighbors are witches, but Guy (John Cassavetes) is unconvinced.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In Roman Polanski's first American film, adapted from Ira Levin's horror bestseller, a young wife comes to believe that her offspring is not of this world. Waifish Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow) and her struggling actor husband, Guy (John Cassavetes), move into the Bramford, an old New York City apartment building with an ominous reputation and only elderly residents. Neighbors Roman and Minnie Castevet (Sidney Blackmer and Ruth Gordon) soon come nosing around to welcome the Woodhouses to the building; despite Rosemary's reservations about their eccentricity and the weird noises that she keeps hearing, Guy starts spending time with the Castevets. Shortly after Guy lands a plum Broadway role, Minnie starts showing up with homemade chocolate mousse for Rosemary. When Rosemary becomes pregnant after a mousse-provoked nightmare of being raped by a beast, the Castevets take a special interest in her welfare. As the sickened Rosemary becomes increasingly isolated, she begins to suspect that the Castevets' circle is not what it seems. The diabolical truth is revealed only after Rosemary gives birth, and the baby is taken away from her. Polanski's camerawork and Richard Sylbert's production design transform the realistic setting (shot on-location in Manhattan's Dakota apartment building) into a sinister projection of Rosemary's fears, chillingly locating supernatural horror in the familiar by leaving the most grotesque frights to the viewer's imagination. This apocalyptic yet darkly comic paranoia about the hallowed institution of childbirth touched a nerve with late-'60s audiences feeling uneasy about traditional norms. Produced by B-horror maestro William Castle, Rosemary's Baby became a critically praised hit, winning Gordon an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Inspiring a wave of satanic horror from The Exorcist (1973) to The Omen (1976), Rosemary's Baby helped usher in the genre's modern era by combining a supernatural story with Alfred Hitchcock's propensity for finding normality horrific.

Poor Rosemary. Guy was such an asshole, he was already using her big time at this point.
Notice how he always shouts so they can hear next door
Throwing out the book kills me every time
@@j_stach Same here!
@@elliemccarthy3487 I never thought of that! You're right. I'm picturing Minnie, ear pressed up against the wall...
@@elliemccarthy3487Yooo never even picked up on that, this movie is filled with subtle detail
Watching this movie the 2nd time makes your skin crawl watching how this guy behaves and reacts
What's evil is how much people are willing to accept compliance.
My god, that APARTMENT!!! It's so beautiful. Can you even imagine what it would cost today...
That was before all the gentrification, and it was also during the time when crime was very high in New York.
Yeah but no balcony, terrace or garden youd miss it in the summer trust me
You can afford it too if you sell your soul 😉
it depends, the average price for a 2 bed at The Dakota is about $7,500,000 as of now
I am sure they renovated it made it more modern and its a condo worth millions
“Do you know who Roman is?”
“ The director?”
🤣
😂
That would hilarious if he actually said that too.
A pedophile hiding from the authorities in Europe like a coward for the past 40 years?
“CUT!!!!”
Lesson: Trust your instincts and KNOW the person you're with.
Also, at the slightest inclination: NEVER be afraid to cut loose or eliminate 'friend' or 'foe'.
"If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you. If all men count with you, but none too much." - Rudyard Kipling
Smart
John Cassavetes as Guy. Great acting from everyone in this movie.
How many times I watched the movie, I hate the husband most.
Minh Du After re-watching this today, I'm convinced that his character is the absolute worst one EVER. Louise Fletcher aka Nurse Ratchet used to be my most despised...then BAM! This guy came back and re-claimed the title. I'm glad I never watched any of his other movies, though. It wouldn't have seemed right. Minnie Castevet (Ruth Gordon's character) is tied for a close second. Her voice alone is like nails on a chalk board. Nosy, Satan worshiping old bitty.
That's what was intended. Well played by JC.
I've reached the opposite conclusion as I've watched this film over the years. Guy just gets better and better. He had Rosemary's best interests at heart and he did what was necessary so they could become rich and successful. Guy was very talented, but he just needed a little boost. Look what it did for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Here there were these two worthless human beings. But by making the right deals at a covenant, they became President and Vice President. I bet you voted for them. So, you know I'm right.
"honey, its 1966"!!!!
Well it's 2018 now, don't pretend it hasn't gone away even with technological advances!
Wish I could go back and live it again.. sigh
Its 2020!!!
I was born 2 yrs later....
Paranoid people should remember ; there really are people out there trying to get them.
"All of them witches"...
Mia Farrow is so adorable with that bob.
Akira625
I got a pixie cut after I saw here in this movie)
I preferred her hair longer.
It’s a pixie. Bob cut completely different
Bob cut is down to the chin x
Mia Farrow is the most underrated Actress in Hollywood for her to not have a Oscar is criminal I could name at least 6 films where she deserve one
So do I, and especially "Secrete Ceremony" of Losey.
It was rumored that her ex-husband, Frank Sinatra, used his mob connections to prevent her from getting nominated for "Rosemary's Baby". She also should have been nominated for "The Great Gatsby".
I absolutely despise Guy. The gaslighting he bestowed upon poor Rosemary. 🤬🤬🤬🤬
I always wondered what Rosemary ever saw in him.
I see u everywhere abusing Guy lol. Seems u absolutely despise him 😂
I noticed that the weather report on television is also unnatural with a big high over western Canada causing a heat wave of all things. Smart director for adding symbols in his movie.
What is that a symbol of?
John Cassavetes later did a Columbo episode where he also plays an entertainer who sneaks around behind his wife's back to commit bad deeds.
As much as Cassavetes hated this experience, I'm still so captivated watching him act.
I had no idea that he hated acting in this film.
He was amazing in this role. It's not often that I completely despise a villian, a lot of time, they have redeeming qualities. Cassavettes REALLY made you hate him
April Garris I absolutely agree! I despised him so much in this movie! Absolutely LOATHED him!
Job well done!
Yes he didn't get on with Roman Polanski I believe
He never said he hated it ever. He was sn improvisational actor and polanski stuck to the script, they had disagreements that's all.
I always found it ruefully funny how much of a whiner and coward the husband was.
He was the ultimate Judas...to the last one he ever betray.
Incredibly sick and evil.
Not everybody gets cucked by the Devil.
@@lockandloadlikehell Judas was kinder than him and regretted what he did. He was way worse than Judas
I'm re-watching this right now and OMG! I don't think I've ever hated a character as much as this creep! I want to punch his smarmy, ugly little face so bad it's ridiculous. How dare he order her around like he's her owner? Now I know why this is a brilliant piece of cinema. As much as I despise that grotesque coward, he accomplished exactly what was intended...this is what acting (at it's finest) is. Look at me! Talking about a 50+ year old movie to strangers! To say this movie is a classic is an understatement.
BRAVO!!👏👏👏
@@merricat3025 Lady Gaga is in love with Judas.
What I cannot understand is how Guy considered himself a struggling actor. Sure, he was not a mega-star (which is what he obviously wanted to be), but 99% of all actors could never afford an apartment in New York such as that one.
he probably had rich parents or just finished a well payed roll
I suppose that was also at a time when New York was much more affordable!
that, and he was doing commercials for which you can receive royalties
It still did not make sense to me since he portrays himself as a struggling actor needing to get noticed.
It's been a long time since I read the book, but my recollection is that the apartment was more than Guy and Rosemary could really afford. I think they were living somewhat beyond their means and, as mentioned below, maybe New York was more affordable then. Too maybe the Woodhouses were thinking that Guy's career would advance and that there would be enough money that the Bramford apartment would fit their budget. It's beyond my budget but I'd sure like to have that apartment---with a few conditions concerning the neighbors!
The biggest disloyalty is GUY , Rosemary completely trusted him & Hutch saw through the it , GUY ALWAYS SHOUTS when rosemary gets scared & he throws away hutch’s book
Guy is just a gold digger really.
Bravo to set design and production. The apartment is still fresh and so airy... Purposely to be in juxtaposition to the darkness of the subject matter. It's a design inspiration.
hated the husband guy from the beginning but really love this movie
My favorite part of the whole film is when Rosemary rearranges the Scrabble tiles to go from "Roman Castavet" to "Steven Marcato", after figuring out that Hutch's dying remark that "The name is an anagram" referred not to the title of the book ("All Of Them Witches") but to the name of her neighbor.
That was so incredibly creepy. Had that happened to me in real life, I would have had a stroke.
Poor Sharon Tate. It's bizarre to me how that happened to Roman wife an her unborn baby Rip miss Tate
Did you ever consider that the statement about the babies blood is true? Thats is why the church of Satan is having an outcry about aborted babies in Texas
Love Mia in this she looks so anemic like a delicate white egg at the mercy of the Devil people she conveys good vs evil perfectly
poor Rosemary i felt so sorry for her All. of them in it even her Loving husband
He wasn’t ever loving just loved himself
In the book Rosemary says:"Hutch was right. We should never have moved in here." You'd think Rosemary would have gotten real suspicous right away when the first night Guy wanted nothing to do with the Castevets, then after dinner he tells Rosemary they're his new best friends! huh????? It's been pointed out that Roman probably didn't tell Guy everything about his plan right away just enough to get Guy to come back the next night. Also Guy probably didn't join right away. The book/movie obviously gives a warning about what can happen if a person doesn't know their spouse as well as they thought. The mere fact that Rosemary had no trouble coming to the conclusion that Guy might be in on a plot to have his own son murdered( though that of course isn't it) shows that Rosemary didn't ever know Guy all that well. I like also how the director lets the audience spot horror for themselves rather than spotlighting them. 1. The scene where Roman looks suspicous at Hutch. 2. The scene where Guy stares at the girls in the kitchen through the window, while they're telling Rosemary that they find Sapirstein a sadistic nut. 3. The scene where the coven sneaks into Rosemary's apartment while she's on the phone-these are all shown in the background.
Yes iv read the book a few times IRA LEVIN is a great writer
An apt that size in NYC would be a fortune!!
Crazy how the last name of Roman... "Castevet" is very similar to the last name of the actor who plays Guy, John "Cassavetes".
That's actually - allegedly - one of the reasons Polanski hired Cassavetes, since then together the first name of the director and the last names of the male lead would together form the main bad guy of the movie, which is kind of funny...
Ruben van de Put Sounds like some Black Magik ritualistic type of shit.
Yeah, well I wouldn't be surprised... I mean, this movie alone started a slur of satanic horror movies and this was during the same time the church of satan was founded, so I wouldn't be surprised at all
Ruben van de Put Yeah, the word is... Roman Polanski, (as in Roman Castevet, another name similarity for the film) created this movie as a Satanic ritual blood sacrifice based on the murder of Sharon Tate.
Actually Sharon Tate died after the filming of "Rosemary's Baby".
See how Guy always @ Shouts! Near the walls knowing there going to hear ie warning Rosemary’s working this out 😮
Gorgeous home.
Really! $2500 a month gets you a closet!
Not then. I did wonder how they afforded it in this movie.
At least she knew that her child looked a monster when he was born. Instead of finding out that he is a monster. I guess what I am trying to say is even though somebody looks like a monster doesn't mean their a monster.
Yes and Adrian could have loved Rosemary more than Guy even though he's the son of Satan he's half his lovely mother too
“The year is ONE!”
My favorite actress in my favorite film.
She is wising up, except it's too late
A traitor on his wife!
PART 1: He always wanted to bring new ideas and interpretations not only when he directed, but when he acted as well. This was a huge problem for directors who didn't want to stray at all from their personal vision. John believed much more that film was a total collaborative effort, and the actor was just as important in creating ideas as the directors. That's why in Cassavetes' films, each person--even the extras--seem to be humans. There isn't one stereotype or caricature in Cassavetes film.
Nice comments. How did the book end?
Man, did I want to stomp out Guy's guts at the end.
If I were Rosemary, I’d be demanding a divorce right after all I’d been through!
Guy gaslighting Rosemary non stop as in the classic film Gaslighting, Rosemary driven to question her own integrity & sanity !
Plays the recoyda... lol love that line.
Occasionally Hollywood slips up and tells us what they are really up to.
Huh?
Yes
2:01 She want to move out of the Dakota, is she crazy!
😂
Once, and it might be a coincidence. Twenty times and something is going on!
Honey it's 1966!
I hate Guy so much! Great actor.
Did mia farrow keep having to go back to that Vidal Sassoon guy to keep her hair that short? It probably would have grown a lot!
I hated guy more than anyone is the end , sold out his wife for fame
... the noise from the NY traffic is coming from the outside so innocent and indifferent ...

Nice house
What did he say about his experience?
Was this fixed in the Dakota apts? Same as John and Yoko? I just think they're cool apartments. And they were very big at the time
It wasn’t actually filmed at The Dakota.
medo
Ira levin said he was conceptualising concepts ie first could it be alien 👽 instead as society was shifting away from religion the thought of satanic was going to be so frightening!
what certificate is this film ?
18 I think
Yes in those days it would have been an X
PART 2: So, basically, on Rosemary's Baby, Polanski wasn't open to Cassavetes' constant need to bring new interpretation and ideas. Polanski didn't want to change what his solid vision for the film--how he told the actors to act, what they had to say, and what kind of characters they should be, wasn't to be questioned. Cassavetes hated this and wasn't pleased with how the film ended up (I guess he didn't think it told an honest story about human beings), though he did respect Knife in the Water.
I read the book. Polanski must have liked it, because he didn't stray far from it. It's not surprising that Cassavetes' improvisational approach wasn't appreciated when Polanski was trying to adapt the book faithfully. I think Polanski was right, though. The end result is great.
