Yamaha Digital display repair!!! Grizzly/Kodiak ATV

  • In this video I go through the process of tracking down a common problem with yamaha's ATV's digital gauges burning out due to apparent low battery symptoms. From my research there is apparently a service bulletin from yamaha that extended the warranty and called for replacing customers displays that fell victim to burning out in this fashion, however that warranty extension expired in 2014. This Particular yamaha is a 2006 kodiak 450.
    I cannot be certain but I imagine the display for the yamaha Grizzly's, and Rhino's are the same for the most part.
    Thank you for watching!

    Thanks for posting this. My 2013 Grizzly 450 screen died and I followed your directions to tear it apart. All of my surface components including the resistors, caps and diodes tested fine though so it is probably a little lucky if one can find a single component that will fix the unit. It was worth a try though. Too bad the meter assemblies cost so much. Thanks.

    I have the same issue on a 2009 700 Yamaha Grizzly. I left the key on the ON position and it drained my battery and ruined the instrument gauge. I cannot get myself to flip for a new gauge ($250). This video gives me something to try out. Thanks man!!

      @@samuela6073 The error with the blinking "E" occurs most often when the battery is slowly discharged, if the quad is not used for a long time, the eeprom memory loses data. Therefore, the simplest solution is to cut the counter inside and physically replace the memory with another manufacturer (Atmel or STI) along with its reprogramming, of course you need to have an appropriate memory batch. This is most likely a Yamaha manufacturing defect. The repair method applies to all models of all years.

    For those who has a 2009 Yamaha Grizzly, this video is great and gave me something to try before flipping the $350 for a new. But of course the meter assembly on this particular model is different. I opened mine up... and tested all the resistors and diodes all checked out to spec. The board looks clean, no thing appears burned out. I was hoping it would just be a diode and/or a resistor like in this video. It's possible is low voltage issue can lead to multiple different ways to toast the meter assembly. So I kept scouring the internet... and I mean I scoured! Until I found this!!
    ua-cam.com/video/a1gqL2mYZAY/v-deo.html
    But it's in Russian! It appears to be related to the dreaded "E" display, but I can't understand the intro to know if this thing is a result of a dead battery, or if the "E" thing can result from something else. Anyone who understand Russian, please chime in.

    Hey bud, what is that tool you call the big guns that u use to remove the 2 resistors? Is that a type of heat gun? Are those resistors held on by double sided tape type deal? Sorry for the questions I'm going to attempt this Repair thanks to your video

    • @ChrisProvazek
      @ChrisProvazek  3 роки тому

      it is similar to a heat gun, it is called a hot air solder rework station. it blows very high heat into a super small focused area to melt the solder. The resistors are soldered to the board, and both connections have to be melted at the same time to safely remove the resistor. looking on amazon, you can get a hot air station for around $30 now days.

    Chris, hopefully you see this, but first, great video and really great ingenuity in fixing the multifunction meter.
    I am currently working on my 05 Grizzly 660 which is having issues with the multifunction meter not working. When the key is turned on, the meter background light comes on and the gear position lights show, but nothing else shows. I have found that my "backup fuse" has a small draw on it and I have isolated the problem to having something to do with the Red/Green wire going from the fuse to the multifunction meter. I wanted to ask you for your opinion on whether I should try the same fix that you performed? Or, if I should try something else first.
    I have done considerable research before coming across your video and had not considered going inside the meter itself. I thought I would try reaching out to you before I go buying about $600 in parts (wiring harness and meter). I don't know to what extent you may be able to actually answer this question, but any tips from your experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • @ChrisProvazek
      @ChrisProvazek  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching. It has been a while since I did the repair but most important think I would do is verify you have dc 12v and ground at the multifunction display before ruling it as the issue. With key and power switch both on there should be two wires going to the display with power, and one or two ground wires. Verify all of them are indeed good, at the connector of the display before deciding If the display is bad. I want to say I showed which wires those are in my video but can't remember.

    • @ChrisProvazek
      @ChrisProvazek  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, just checked red wire with green in white connector should be 12v+ when key and switch is on. Brown feeds the display backlight. If you have power on that red/green, and you have verified you have - on the ground wire then I would bet the display is bad.

    • @ChrisProvazek

      No, my issue was an issue of the board internal of the display not powering up at all. The E code if I m not mistaken is an issue of one of the power leads not getting to the display. Use a meter and verify you have power on the two 12v+ leads for the display (I cannot remember the colors) watch the video.
